Everytime you can’t blame captaincy, credit must be given to England: Azhar Ali

Manchester : Pakistan captain Azhar Ali thinks that every time you cannot blame the captaincy and the credit must be given to England, particularly Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes.

Pakistan posted a target of 277, after a bad batting display in the second innings, getting all out for 169.

The hosts were in trouble at 117-5 but a sixth-wicket stand of 139 between player of the match Chris Woakes, who finished on 84 not out, and Jos Buttler (75) smatched the game away from Pakistan during Day four.

“It is easy to criticize with hindsight but we also need to acknowledge if someone posts a partnership like that. Every time you can’t blame the captaincy but I am here to take responsibility that we could not defend a total, as a team, which we should have,” Azhar said while talking to reporters during virtual press-conference.

Azhar, who made 0 and 18 in both the innings, said that the series is not over yet. “It’s disappointing but not over yet, there are still two Tests to go. There a lot of positives from this game, we outplayed England on most parts of this Test match,” he added.

The 35-year-old, who has now scored only 139 runs in his last 12 away Test innings, denied that his captaincy is affecting his batting.

“When I bat, I am not thinking about the captaincy, whether or not I am out of form, and when I am captain, I do not think about my batting at all,” he maintained.

According to details, to participate in the plantation drive volunteers have taken charge of their roles and divided into different teams to dispense their duties.

“The Sindh government should [join us in] favour of national interest,” the politician had said.

Dar said the prime minister will also be in the field along with other volunteers and the general public tomorrow, adding the drive will begin from Islamabad under the premier, while CM Punjab Usman Buzdar will commence it from Sialkot.

He added that civil society, district administration, forestry department and the citizenry should work together to make the campaign successful.

PM Imran to plant sapling in Korang

The adviser noted that the first billion trees’ target under Ten Billion Tree Tsunami initiative was going to be achieved by June 2021 as the stocks of saplings were augmented from 50 million to 300 million.

These saplings would be sufficient to meet the massive afforestation initiative.

Loya Jirga agrees to release 400 Taliban prisoners

DNA

Kabul, (DNA) – Afghanistan’s Loya Jirga on Saturday, urged the government to release the remaining 400 Taliban prisoners so as to move forward intra-Afghan talks.

The Loya Jirga was called to determine the fate of the prisoners, convened Friday and wrapped up on Saturday. Over 3,200 including at least 700 women delegates participated which were split up into 50 working committees and discussed the prisoner release issue.

All 50 committees recommended the government to free the 400 controversial prisoners. Abdullah Abdullah, the chairman of the 2020 Afghanistan peace Loya Jirga and the head of Afghan peace reconciliation office announce on the second day of the meeting that Jirga has decided to agree on the release of another 400 Taliban prisoners. “None of the 50 committees of the jirga categorically opposed the release of 400 high-value Taliban prisoners, a Taliban precondition to allow intra-Afghan negotiations begin”, Abdullah said. In his tweet, he further added that: “I congratulate all Jirga members divided into 50 working committees for promptly ending their free deliberations. I welcome their input and recommendations as part of this important consultative exercise as we compile & announce the outcome tomorrow.” According to Abdullah, the first round of the intra-Afghan negotiations will be held in Doha, if the release of the prisoners is completed promptly.
Meanwhile, President Ghani said the other day that the Intra-Afghan dialogue will kick-off within 3 days after the 400 remaining Taliban prisoners are released. This comes as the Afghan government had earlier released 4,600 out of 5,000 Taliban prisoners as per the US-Taliban agreement signed in February.

President Ghani refused to release the remaining 400 Taliban prisoners saying their crimes were ‘very serious’ and he cannot make any decision by himself to release them, thus he called for Loya Jirga, a traditional gathering of people’s representatives from all over the country.

Petition seeking Faisal Vawda’s disqualification as MNA fixed for hearing

ISLAMABAD, AUG 8 (DNA) – The Islamabad High Court fixed on Saturday two petitions seeking disqualification of and contempt of court proceedings against Water Resources Minister Faisal Vawda.

Justice Amir Farooq will hear the two petitions on August 20, according to a cause list issued by the IHC registrar.

Mian Faisal filed the petition seeking Vawda’s disqualification as an MNA. It noted that the court had sought a reply from the federal minister, the election commission and other parties to the case on January 29.

The petition says that Vawda submitted his nomination papers on June 11, 2018, which were accepted on June 18, 2018. He submitted the application to renounce his US citizenship on June 22, 2018 and hid his dual nationality while submitting nomination papers, it states.

The petitioner moved the court to disqualify Vawda in the light of Supreme Court’s verdicts, contending that he is illegally holding a public office.

Petitioner Jahangir Jadoon said in his petition that on January 29, the court had given Vawda two weeks to submit his reply in the disqualification case.

However, it has been several months and no reply was submitted by the minister, the petition notes. It is an open and shut case which is why Vawda does not want to submit a reply, Jadoon stated.

The petitioner requested the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the minister. DNA

Experts call for urgent review of SDGs strategy, action plan

ISLAMABAD, AUG 8 (DNA) – Pakistan urgently needs a comprehensive country review on the SDGs mainstreaming into development projects, data collection and reporting mechanisms to ensure sharp increase in performance.

Country is severely lagging behind on all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) except two including SDG-1 No Poverty and SDG-13 Climate Action where Pakistan is on the ‘right direction’ as mentioned in the Sustainable Development Report (SDR) 2020. Pakistan is ranked on 134 with a total score of 56.17, much lower than some of the least developed African countries. The UN report on SDGs shows a bit more performance than the SDR.

Devcom-Pakistan Director Munir Ahmed highlighted these points while presenting the Pakistan’s country review of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as reported in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDR) 2020.

The report is the annual research publication by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), set up in 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General.

SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies, multilateral financing institutions, the private sector, and civil society.

Speaking on the webinar on ‘Country Review: Pakistan’s Way Forward on SDGs” organized by the Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan), Munir Ahmed said: “There is no progress on eight SDGs in the five years since the UN SDGs regime was launched. They include No Hunger (SDG-2), Quality Education (SDG-4), Gender Equality (SDG-5), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG-7), Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG-9), Sustainable cities and communities (SDG-11), Life Below Water (SDG-14), and Partnerships for SDGs (17).

He said: There is slight improvement in Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG-3), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG-6), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG-8), and Peace Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG-16). Pakistan reported nothing on Reduced Inequalities (SDG-10) and Responsible Production and Consumption (SDG-12).

Research analyst Adil Rashid in his keynote presentation detailed many lacunas hampering Pakistan’s performance on SDGs including bureaucratic hurdles and the usual habit of slowing down the process. He said: SDGs are not a separate phenomenon but a mechanism to measure the performance of different sectors on certain indicators to evaluate overall progress of the country on social, economic and environmental indicators. Mainstreaming of these indicators, monitoring and reporting are the three main components which could be easily handled by coordination among the stakeholders.

He said unfortunately there is no vertical monitoring and reporting system in the ministries while ‘baboocracy’ has no urge to the needful believing it as an additional task though it is not.

He suggested having relevant technical experts on all SDGs in the federal and provincial SDGs secretariat for specialized handling of each SDG. We need to promote partnerships and improve coordination and an IT-based networking and reporting system.

He suggested that Pakistan’s SDGs regime shall be under the President of the country while NADRA’s data could support in developing rapid assessment of each SDG.

Ali Kemal, the Economic Policy Advisor on SDGs, said the Sustainable Development Report 2020 is based on the old data of up to 2016 while Pakistan has shown some progress lately but not reported in the said report. However, the UNDP report has included the data Pakistan provided to them.

He has shown his reservation on Pakistan’s reporting mechanism on Climate Action that has ‘remarkable progress’ while in another SDG Life on Land has shown negative results.

Many are the hitches and glitches in the systems and we are trying to improve them for better access to the data reporting, analysis and adding into the performance indicators.

Dr Nuzhat Khan, National Institute of Oceanography, found a little disappointed by the coordination and facilitation by the Planning Commission.

She suggested improving the feedback and inclusion systems for the stakeholders and partner organizations to enhance the SDGs performance.=DNA
