DNA

FAISALABAD, AUG 10 – The FCCI has faithfully carried out its responsibilities in the most difficult period of the pandemic. All the organizations including police, doctors, paramedic staff, firefighters, journalists and other local body organizations who are performing their duties 24/7 during Corona were provided basic safety items by FCCI.

The FCCI donated Rs 7 to 8 million to them during the lockdown and also donated Rs 40 million to Samanabad Hospital. This proved that The FCCI is a partner in the needs of not only traders and industrialists but also every citizen of our city. This was stated by FCCI President Rao Sikandar Azam during his interview.

“My Presidency era was the hardest in the history of FCCI” he said. As President, my responsibilities have grown even more and we are going through the most active and vital period in the history of the FCCI. I worked day and night with my team and solved the problems of Faisalabad business community and industrialists in these difficult situations. I am proud and happy that in addition to the 27 members of my standing committee, the remaining 112 team members also played a vibrant role in making my plans a success. From the beginning of our presidency, we have formed a team to improve international relations and have started contacts all over the world to get our exports out of the catastrophe. We sent delegation to various countries: Denmark, USA, UK, Europe, Russia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia by the end of February. First time in FCCI history, we sent a delegation to the Mecca Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Then covid 19 pandemic hit the world and effect flights and meet ups but we adopted a positive strategy and started a series of digital contacts. We arranged audio-video meeting for international contacts. Our major export market is US and UK which closed due to COVID 19. During pandemic, if the rest of our industries were affected, our medical and personal safety and hygiene exports increased. Even our textile exports increased by  5 to 6%.

Rao Sikandar said that knowing the need of the 21st century, I digitized the FCCI infrastructure and due to this move, for the first time in the history of FCCI, corruption of Rs 35 million was caught. Inquiries are underway against the perpetrators. The system is being transparent for everyone. Corruption will no longer be possible. We have built a strong system to control the expenses of the Chamber, which has resulted in a reduction of about Rs 10 million in my time. It is the only chamber in Pakistan where no member of the executive body receives any privileges like car, fuel or tour travelling expenses. The president and the executive body have to bear their own expenses. At FEDMIC, we have got 10 acres of land approved by the government. Where FCCI’s new and more  effective structure will soon be formed. We setup e-Markaz stations of all government agencies in FCCI to save local businessmen valuable time and reduce hassle. Now any local businessman who need any government agency such as Company Registration, Taxtation, FBR, Police, Traffic Police, Nadira, SBP, Visa consultancy or SME should contact the relevant counter in FCCI office and without any hassle get the best service. No long line, no long wait.

Talking about local business, Mr. Rao said, “We have introduced ECHO friendly business policies which have the full support of the government. The government is listening to us and is taking all the actions that our city businessmen are in needs currently. Govt is working with the FCCI to rehabilitate the industry or business that has been struggling during pandemic period, and to help it fully. Faisalabad is no less than a paradise for new investors. Today’s investment is a guarantee of a bright future. We have everything from human resources to modern infrastructure development to meet ISO standards. One of the best chambers in the world is FCCI which has recognition in the business world due to its investment friendly policies. Here in FCCI, we are developing policies to reduce production costs that let our merchants to compete international market easily.

We understand the needs of today’s youth and have introduced a program called Techno Park at the FCCI, where people from the IT industry will be given a place in the Chamber and startups will be fully supported. We will work together to promote freelancing and entrepreneurship so that our young people of today can lead a healthy and prosperous life and fetch a brighter future for their country and nation. This is a founding stone towards 4th generation industrial revolution. Our project team consists of more youngsters whom I am directly looking after so that we can achieve our goal in time.

My conscience is satisfied that I have spent my presidency and in the best possible way I have made the best plans according to the time and circumstances and worked on them day and night to make them active. My timely decisions and plans have further strengthened the reputation of the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce which has satisfied my conscience. I am happy that I have lived up to the expectations of the traders and industrialists of Faisalabad and am making the best decisions for their betterment during my presidency.

Pak-China friendship green park in Gwadar completed

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 10 (DNA): Construction and development work of Pak-China friendship green park in Gwadar has been completely. According to a report published by Gwadar Pro on Monday, with its completion, a grassy plantation surrounding Gwadar Port stands out with thousands of trees waving to the tune of wind, stretching their leaves and casting a shade along the road.

Named after Pak-China friendship green park, this plantation was completed under the cooperation of the sister cities Gwadar and Puyang in Henan Province, China, as well as China Overseas Port Holding Company (COPHC).

It is located on the south side of China-Pakistan Friendship Road leading to the port and laid under Hill Koh-e-Batil, covering an area of 60 acres.

Gwadar has a hot desert climate, characterized by little precipitation and high variation between summer and winter temperatures. Serious soil salinization has led to a low survival rate of plants.

Faced with these difficulties, COPHC has made great efforts to transform the ecological environment of Gwadar by improving the coverage of plantation in this area, and it has successfully planted hundreds of tropical economic tree species that can adapt to high temperature, salt and alkali, wind and sand, and draught.

Besides, COPHC has adopted area-based planning for the Pak-China friendship green park. The main areas are distributed into a tropical arbor planting belt, a tropical flower planting area, and a ring hedge flower gallery.

A tour road has been laid in the park to facilitate visitors. A memorial space has also been reserved for the dignitaries of the Chinese and Pakistani governments to plant trees when visiting Gwadar Port.

To ensure the survival of plants, drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems have been built in the park.

As per the introduction of Mr. Zheng Xuedong in charge of the planting plan, irrigation are equipped with a plant nutrient solution distribution system, which is the most advanced irrigation technology in the world.

They have not only built an exclusive water supply pipeline linking the seawater desalination plant in Gwadar Free Zone with the park but also built a water supply network system of nearly 10,000 meters in the park, and repaired a water storage cellar with a volume of 3,000 cubic meters. The system has run well so far.

Up to now, nearly 100,000 trees, shrubs, and flowers have been planted in the Pak-China friendship green park. Meanwhile, site cleaning, construction waste removal, and soil replacement have also been completed.

The once garbage dump with blowing sand and no grass has been transformed into a beautiful landscape with green trees, flowers, and a pleasant environment.

“We will gradually build the Pak-China friendship green park into the most distinctive cultural landscape in this area,” Zhang Baozhong, Chairman COPHC told the reporter of Gwadar Pro.

“COPHC will join hands with the local people of Gwadar to build a dynamic Gwadar Port with a stronger economy and a better environment. I hope the whole city of Gwadar will benefit from the development of Gwadar Port and realize a “win-win” situation between economic and ecological development, ” he added.

Pakistan has huge potential to attract BRI investment: German scholar

BEIJING, Aug 10 (DNA) – A German scholar Dr. Christoph Nedopil Wang, the director of the Green BRI Centre stated that despite the decline in total BRI investment in 2020 due to COVID-19, Pakistan has great potential to attract BRI investment in the renewable energy sector.

China Economic Net on Monday quoted him as having said that energy investment maintained a stable trend in the BRI investment in 2020.

BRI’s investment in the first half of 2020 covered all areas. Energy investment accounted for 37.6% of the total investment. This is a continuation of the infrastructure investment focus on the “Belt and Road” initiative.

According to Dr. Wang in the energy sector investment, renewable energy shows a strong performance. The share of renewable energy in BRI energy investment has increased year by year from 19.6% in 2014, and surpassed the share of fossil energy investment in 2020.

Looking at BRI energy investments, 2020 saw a relative increase of non-fossil fuel related energy investments. While in the first 6 months of 2019 56% of energy investments were fossil fuel-related, the share dropped to 42%.

The two countries with the highest energy-related investments were Pakistan and Vietnam. Among them, $1.93 billion of China’s energy investment in Pakistan is all hydropower projects, which are invested by Power China.

In an exclusive interview, he said that although Pakistan has a large amount of investment in the renewable energy sector, Pakistan has great potential to attract more investment under the “Belt and Road” initiative.

“There is a huge need for renewable investments. so far, Pakistan is 30% coal, and only 4.8% truly green (that is wind and solar), 35% is hydropower”

Wang also suggested that both Pakistan and China should focus on sustainable projects that can bring returns and prepare for a better future, such as renewable energy.

Meanwhile, China will work to appropriately integrate environmental and social safeguards to improve environmental and social outcomes. “CPEC projects can support Pakistan dealing with its debt through bilateral and multilateral forums as well.”, he said.

The Green BRI Centre is formulating policies and providing financial and economic research to accelerate the green development of BRI, with a focus on green finance.

The Green BRI Centre is part of the International Institute of Green Finance (IIGF) and Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE), independent think tanks located in Beijing, China.

76 Chinese technicians arrive for Matiari-Lahore Transmission Line Project

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 10 (DNA) – A total of 76 Chinese technicians from China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co. Ltd. (CET) arrived here on the company’s second chartered flight for the ongoing Matiari to Lahore Transmission Line Project, Gwadar Pro reported on Monday.

Matiari-Lahore DC Power Transmission Project is a priority project under the framework of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

It is the first DC power transmission project in Pakistan and first local project open to foreign investment in power transmission and converting.

The project started on December 1, 2018, and was constructed by China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of State Grid Corporation of China.

At present, a total of 1,069 Chinese and 1,505 Pakistani personnel have been engaged in the project.

Pakistan registered its first COVID-19 patient at the end of February, and the cases saw a spike in the following months.

During this difficult time, while doing a good job in COVID-19 prevention and control, the State Grid Corporation of China effectively promoted the resumption of work and production, and sent Chinese support technicians and anti-pandemic supplies to Pakistan via chartered flights.

It is learnt that the first batch of 130 support technicians arrived in Pakistan on June 10 for Matiari-Lahore DC Power Transmission Project.

“After two weeks of isolation, we started the project acceptance checks of converter stations at both ends.

Despite the language barrier and business differences between the two countries, we put forward a number of operation & maintenance and acceptance schemes, which were recognized by all parties involved in the construction”, said Wu Mingxing, one of the first batch of support technicians.

In the next step, State Grid will accelerate the construction of Matiari-Lahore DC Power Transmission Project to ensure that it would be put into operation as scheduled.

Tanzania opposition ‘lacks confidence in electoral body’

Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu says he lacks confidence in the electoral commission ahead of his presidential contest against incumbent John Magufuli in October’s general elections.

Mr Lissu returned to the country from Belgium last month after surviving an assassination attempt in the capital, Dodoma, three years ago.

He told Kenya’s Radio Citizen on Monday that electoral officials in the country serve at the pleasure of the incumbent.

“The chairman and the chief executive of the electoral commission were appointed by President Magufuli. They have proved over the years that they are not independent,” Mr Lissu said .

He said that his Chadema party will still participate in the elections, but will use all means to demand for accurate results to be released.

Mr Lissu said no Tanzanian radio of television station had interviewed him since his return for fear of state repression.

Ethiopian minister suspended from ruling party organ

Ethiopian Defence Minister Lemma Megerssa and two other top officials have been temporarily suspended from the ruling Prosperity Party’s central committee.

Mr Lemma was once a close ally of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and a key figure in the country’s political and economic reform over the past few years.

Prior to being appointed as a defence minister he was the head of the country’s most-populous state, Oromia.

But last November, Mr Lemma publicly criticised the prime minister’s efforts to reorganise and rebrand the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) – a coalition of four ethnic based parties that has been in power since the early 1990s.

The EPRDF was renamed as the Prosperity Party.

He also cast doubts on Mr Abiy’s philosophy of Medemer (coming together).

The announcement of his suspension comes after the Oromia wing of the ruling party held a two-day summit in the wake of ethnic and religious violence that claimed the lives of more than 170 people.

A spokesperson for the party accused Mr Lemma of disregarding the party and his duties.

It is not yet clear if Mr Lemma will continue holding the position of defence minister.

Teyba Hassen, who was Mr Lemma’s deputy when he was head of Oromia state, is also among those suspended for reasons that are related to the recent violence, the spokesperson said.

UK COVID-19 daily death count could be scrapped for being ‘exaggerated’: Telegraph

Britain’s official coronavirus daily death count could be scrapped following an investigation into Public Health England’s method of counting it.

The conclusions of the investigation, which was ordered by Health Secretary Matt Hancock after it emerged officials were “exaggerating” virus deaths, are expected this week.

One recommendation could be to move to a weekly official death toll instead.

Britain paused its daily update of the death toll last month and the government ordered a review into how Public Health England reports coronavirus deaths, after academics said the daily figures may include people who died of other causes.

Academics in a blog post had warned that the way the government health agency calculated the figures was skewed as patients who tested positive for coronavirus, but are successfully treated, will still be counted as dying from the virus “even if they had a heart attack or were run over by a bus three months later”.

England’s death figures vary substantially from day to day due to this reason, the academics had argued.

In contrast, the other parts of the United Kingdom do not follow the same approach. There is a cut-off threshold of 28 days in Scotland after a positive test, after which a patient is not automatically considered to have died from the virus.

Britain, one of the countries hardest hit by the virus, reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday, its highest daily increase since June, taking the total number of cases past 310,000.

Those responsible for electrocution deaths be booked, put on ECL: CJP

KARACHI : The Supreme Court on Monday expressed displeasure over power cuts in the port city and summoned the chief executive officer of K-Electric to explain his position as to load shedding.

Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, who headed a bench hearing cases at the apex court’s Karachi registry, took the city’s sole power distributor to task over prolonged load shedding and electrocution deaths.

He remarked that eight to ten people are dying due to electrocution daily but the National Electric Power Regulator Authority (Nepra) isn’t doing anything. He said those responsible for electrocution incidents should be booked and their names put on the Exit Control List (ECL).

CJP Gulzar said an FIR of every death from electrocution be registered.

On July 29, the Nepra had taken “serious notice” of electrocution deaths during recent rains in Karachi and invited citizens to report such incidents to the regulatory body.

In a statement, a spokesperson of NEPRA said that in order to ascertain the real causes behind these incidents and to fix responsibility the regulatory body has created a dedicated email address to receive evidence from the general public and affected families.

Go home if you do not have authority: SC slams Karachi mayor

KARACHI: The Supreme Court of Pakistan lambasted the authorities responsible for Karachi on Monday while hearing a case related to billboards being swept away during strong winds and causing injuries and deaths.

The SC bench, under Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed, criticised Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar, the Sindh government, electricity utility K-Electric and others over what it called dereliction of duty.

During the hearing, the CJP asked where the mayor of the city was, noting that Akhtar is always complaining about lack of powers.

“Go home if you do not have authority; why are you sitting as a mayor?” remarked the CJP.

Justice Ahmed then inquired about the tenure of the mayor, to which Akhtar, who presented himself before the court, responded that he will leave the post on August 28.

“Go, leave the city be,” lashed out the CJP, saying that the mayor of the city is responsible for the destruction of the city during their tenure.

“The mayor Karachi seems to have a vendetta against the city, [even though] people voted for him so that he could do something for Karachi,” said the judge.

SC expresses indignation over billboards issue

The CJP also commented on the issue of billboards causing accidents in the city, asking Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shalwani to submit a report on the matter.

The Advocate General, Sindh was also present, who told the court that a case has been registered in the matter.

“The entire city is full of billboards,” said the judge, adding that if these fall down then they can cause severe damage.

“Let us do an inquiry on the past five years to see who installed these billboards,” remarked Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan.

“There are so many billboards that airflow has been restricted. This is a violation of the law,” said the CJP.

The SSP South told the court that a case has been registered against two suspects for installing faulty billboards and that a search is underway.

“Have they gone hiding in the sea? Don’t give lame statements before the court and go find them within half an hour,” the CJP remarked.

The commissioner Karachi then told the court that people have erected billboards on private property, and that hundreds of billboards were removed over the last four years.

‘Where is the writ of the Sindh govt?’

The CJP continued questioning the authorities, remarking that the Sindh government and the local bodies are ‘enemies of the city’.

The CJP said that there does not seem to be any governance in Karachi.

“Where is the writ of the Sindh government?” he asked the officials present before the court.

He continued that the billboards issue has been in violation of building codes and the entire city presents a dismal picture due to piles of garbage and dirt.

“It seems everyone takes out their chunk and abandons the city,” he said, adding that it looked like everyone is a part of a mafia.

Case against KE CEO, administration on ECL

The apex court then lambasted the sole power supplier of the city, saying that it will issue an order against KE.

The CJP said that a case should be registered against KE and its entire administration should be placed on the ECL.

He added that the directors of the power supplier should be arrested and sent to jail.

“Daily 8 to 10 people die due to electrocution,” said the CJP, adding that KE has meanwhile collected billions and trillions in its coffers.
