New Zealand locks down after new coronavirus cases emerge in Auckland

Auckland : New Zealand went into lockdown mode on Wednesday, a day after new coronavirus cases were detected in Auckland, ending the country’s 102-day streak without the virus.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said authorities were scrambling to trace anyone who had been in contact with four Auckland residents who tested positive Tuesday, ending the dream run in which the virus had been contained at New Zealand´s borders.

A three-day stay-at-home order for Auckland, New Zealand’s biggest city with a population of 1.5 million, was announced on Tuesday night and went into force at lunchtime on Wednesday.

Police in facemasks manned roadblocks on major roads in Auckland to enforce the new measures.

Ardern said health officials were also locking down aged care homes across the country because they could act as transmission hotspots.

“I realise how incredibly difficult this will be for those who have loved ones in these facilities, but it’s the strongest way we can protect and look after them,” she said.

There was panic buying at supermarkets across New Zealand and huge queues at coronavirus testing stations as Kiwis came to terms with the re-emergence of a virus many thought had been defeated.

New Zealand had been held up by the World Health Organisation as an example of how to contain the disease after recording only 22 deaths in a population of five million and preventing community transmission for more than three months.

Ardern said the return of coronavirus was “unsettling” but all efforts were being made to retrace the steps of the Auckland family of four who contracted it from an unknown source.

She said the September 19 election may be impacted if the outbreak could not be contained.

“We’re seeking advice from the Electoral Commission, just so that we make sure have all options open to us,” she said.

“No decisions yet, as you can imagine, have been made.”

Ardern’s centre-left Labour Party has been riding high in opinion polls and is expected to win a second term.

The conservative National Party was open to the idea of a delay if conditions meant it was justified.

“It’s going to be very difficult to have an election in mid-September when we are now mid-August. It is very little time,” National leader Judith Collins.

Pakistan eye strong comeback as Stokes absence leaves hosts with selection dilemma

Southampton : Pakistan is eyeing a strong comeback in the second Test and level the series at The Rose Bowl after England faces a huge selection headache due to Ben Stokes’ unavailability for the rest of the series.

Pakistan lost the first Test after having an upper hand as they dominated the majority of the match till Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes posted a historic partnership for the sixth wicket allowing the hosts to get a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Stokes, who has been ruled out for family reasons and would shortly fly to New Zealand, might be replaced by middle-order batsman Zak Crawley who missed out on the last Tests while an extra bowler was drafted because of Stokes’ injury problems but he bowled in the second innings and picked two wickets too

England also wary Buttler’s wicket-keeping abilities and do have an option of playing Ben Foakes, regarded as better wicket-keeper and play Buttler as a specialist batter.

However, captain Joe Root looked optimistic about it as he praised Buttler’s knock by saying. “I think it will provide him with a huge amount of confidence in all aspects of his game and he should take that forward for the rest of the series.”
There is also a chance that England will rotate their bowlers, similar to the West Indies series, which could see Mark Would or Sam Curran come into consideration in place of James Anderson and Jofra Archer as both of them looked rusty as compare to Stuart Broad and Woakes.

On the other hand, Pakistan will be expecting a better show from the batsmen after a collapse in the second innings of the Manchester Test. The form of two senior campaigners, skipper Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq is also a major obstacle for Pakistan’s progress.

Azhar’s tactics will once again be observed as he was criticized heavily for his captaincy decisions in the latter part of the match. He also denied that captaincy was affecting his batting.
“When I bat, I’m not thinking about the captaincy, whether or not I’m out of form, and when I’m captain, I don’t think about my batting at all,” he said after the first Test.

Head coach Misbah-ul-Haq insisted that his side should recover from the loss and try to avoid a defeat that will lead them to the first series defeat by England since 2010.

“We need to improve 10 to 15 percent and deal with pressure situations a little better but we shouldn’t be mentally down,” he said.

“Of course, there is a disappointment but we must not keep that feeling in our minds otherwise it will be difficult to come back but the team believes we can fight back,” Misbah added.

Pakistan went with two leg-spinners, Yasir Shah and Shadab Khan but Shadab’s role with the ball was very minimal and they may look to play an extra batter, in the form of Fawad Alam, who will surely be itching to play his first Test after 10 years.

The visitors can also consider bringing all-rounder Faheem Ashraf as a fourth pacer, after viewing conditions of The Rose Bowl, which generally favors seamers.

Weather is likely to play spoilsport as it is expected that the weather is not expected to be great overall five days of the Test match. There is a chance of rain throughout the Test and time will be lost due to the weather.

“The Contrast: Indian Hegemonistic Policies in South Asia and Pakistan’s Quest for Regional Peace and Stability”

DNA

ISLAMABAD, AUG 11 – The Islamabad Policy Research Institute organized a special webinar on “The Contrast: Indian Hegemonistic Policies in South Asia and Pakistan’s Quest for Regional Peace and Stability” here in the capital today. The session included Keynote Address by Senator Sherry Rehman, followed by Dr Liu Zongyi and Ambassador (R) Ashraf Jehangir Qazi as the speakers.

In his Opening Remarks, Acting President IPRI, Brig. (R) Raashid Wali Janjua highlighted the jingoistic posturing of a Hindutva driven Indian government that has put the peace and security of South Asia in a confrontational limbo. He added that India has problems with every neighbor and has come a long way from its Nehruvian legacy of secular Indian nationalism. “The tactical strategy of BJP was straight out of the playbook of Nazis. Indian government has tried to marginalise and ostracize the muslim community through Citizen Amendment Act and National Register for Citizens”, he averred. The Acting President also mentioned that bilateral attempts for promoting neighbourly relations have been spurned by India. Instead of responding to peace, the Indians have been racketing up tensions and even resorting to cross border attacks on LOC.”

Senator Sherry Rehman talked about how Pakistan is a particular thorn in Modi’s side because it notionally challenges and impedes Modi’s ascent as South Asia region’s hegemon. She pointed out that India is using external threats to cover up its internal failures and like a Janus faced entity showing a different image to the world while acting as a misanthropic bully domestically and an implacable hegemon bilaterally. Pakistan’s foreign policy as per her needs to be more nuanced and proactive based on a consistent approach backed by a domestic consensus.

Ambassador (R) Ashraf Jehangir Qazi stressed on the need for a two tracked policy. Track one should aim at employing diplomacy, lawfare and moral suasions whereas track two should focus on prevention of cultural genocide through all means at disposal of Pakistan.

Dr Liu Zongyi of Shanghai Institute for International Studies highlighted the change in Indian approach towards border dispute with China due to militant Hindutva ideology of Modi. He pointed out that India is stoking the fire of conflict in the region on the encouragemenr of another global power. India as per him was neither capable of winning a war against China nor making peace under the current Indian regime.
