Miandad criticises PM Khan for appointing ‘foreigners’ in PCB

Legendary batsman Javed Miandad has lashed out at Prime Minister Imran Khan for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s performance.

The 63-year-old, who was part of the Men-in-Green’s 1992 World Cup-winning side under Imran’s leadership, posted a video on his official YouTube account where he questioned the appointment of the current board officials.

“Inept people are serving at high-profile positions in the PCB,” said Miandad. “You appointed a foreigner on a key position. What will happen when he flees the country after doing corruption? Is there a shortage of people in your own country that you had to bring people from abroad to work in the PCB?”

He also claimed that Imran’s decision to end departmental cricket has increased unemployment. “They [cricketers] should be playing cricket. You couldn’t create job opportunities for the people you promised before.”

The Karachi-born batsman further went on to say that he will be making political statements from now on. “I will say what is right and condemn what is wrong,” he added.

United Nations in Pakistan celebrate International Youth Day 2020

Islamabad, 12 August 2020: Today the United Nations in Pakistan commemorated International Youth Day by hosting an online seminar focusing on “Breaking Barriers for Meaningful Youth Engagement”. The event was attended by representatives of youth, the Government and development partners.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Youth Affairs, Mr. Usman Dar, said: ‘Youth form the biggest asset of the country and given the ongoing pandemic, they can play a crucial role in COVID response and recovery. To ensure their meaningful engagement, the Government has established Tiger Force to involve young people across Pakistan to fight against the coronavirus. Through their participation and hard work, we have been able to spread and reiterate SOPs across the country.’ He further added, ‘Our young people possess the energy and ability to contribute positively to the development of the nation. We just need to keep giving them the opportunities and right platforms.’

This year’s theme, ‘Youth Engagement for Global Action’ highlights the ways in which the engagement of young people at the local, national and global levels can enrich national and multilateral institutions and processes.

Ignacio Artaza, Resident Representative, UNDP Pakistan, said, ‘I am extremely happy to open today’s session on behalf of the UN agencies in Pakistan who are working jointly to support the empowerment of youth and adolescents. It’s indeed a pleasure to see several UN agencies, who have been working closely to support a joint UN engagement of youth and adolescents in the COVID response, coming together today to advocate for greater youth engagement.’

The United Nation’s Youth 2030 strategy, which places young people at the center of the Development Agenda, is especially relevant in Pakistan, where more than two-thirds of the population is under the age of 30. With a decade remaining to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the participants stressed that it is a critical time to build momentum and invest in young people so that they can realize their capabilities to pursue gainful and decent employment, education opportunities, health and wellbeing, as well as civic and political empowerment. Meaningful youth engagement remains instrumental for development, in particular in view of the current COVID-19 crisis.

Recognizing the importance of meaningfully engaging with this demographic, several UN agencies in Pakistan including UNICEF, UNFPA, UNHCR, UNESCO and UNDP have combined efforts to draft a Youth Engagement Strategy, which aims to educate and engage Pakistan’s adolescents and young people to play a positive role in response to the coronavirus COVID-19.

The key highlights of the panel discussion were taken as action points by Government and the development organizations representatives. They will help address some of the barriers to meaningful youth engagement so that young people in Pakistan can have a greater say in their future.

The UN General Assembly designated 12 August as International Youth Day in 1999. It is an annual celebration of the role young women and men play as essential partners in promoting human rights and development.

Pakistan may find market for camel milk in China: Report

BEIJING, Aug 12 (DNA): Pakistan may find market of its camel milk in China, says a report published by Gwadar Pro on Wednesday. Camel milk has long been produced in Pakistan, while China started camel milk production only about two years ago, According to a research study conducted by a Chinese expert Prof. Cheng Xizhong. He suggested that Chinese and Pakistani enterprises may conduct on-the-spot studies and cooperate in camel milk production and sales. He viewed that camel milk from Pakistan will be very popular in the Chinese market.

It was noted that camel milk in Pakistan is cheaper than cow milk, and Pakistani camel milk is genuine at a fair price. The study says : the camels in Pakistan eat grasses that grow naturally, there are no hormones and other additives in the feed, so the camel milk produced in Pakistan is organic. The amount of camel milk produced in Pakistan is much higher than that in China. The camels in Pakistan are single-humped ones, and the milk yield is higher than that of China’s Bactrian camels. The milk yield of a single-humped camel in Pakistan can reach 3 tons in one lactation period, while that of China`s Bactrian camel is less than 1 ton.

Camels were the most important means of transportation along the ancient Silk Road. Therefore, we may say that in ancient Chinese civilization, it was the camel who trod an economic and cultural road connecting Chinese and Western civilizations. With the increasing demand for camel milk, camels will play a new role in the Belt and Road cooperation. In 2018, the number of camels in China was 338,400, with an increase of 6.10% over the previous year. Camel breeding in China is mainly concentrated in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. In 2018, the number of camels in Inner Mongolia was 172,700 and that in Xinjiang was 123,600, accounting for 87.59% of the total number of camels in China. In 2019, the number of camels in China was 405,300, with an increase of 4.27% over the previous year.China has a population of 1.4 billion, and in 2019, China’s camel milk production was only 17,000 tons, far from meeting the needs of the Chinese people. Now it is said that drinking camel milk has many magical benefits, and the Chinese people, who attach importance to health care, have a growing demand for camel milk. Therefore, China has to find the sources of camel milk in the international market, it added.

Sources had added that the Bureau had initiated proceedings for verification of the corruption complaints, for which the anti-graft body’s Lahore bureau issued the directives.

The allegation had been rejected by then Punjab government spokesperson Shahbaz Gill.
