PAKISTANI WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS COMPLETE TRAINING ON EXPORTING THEIR PRODUCTS

THE U.S. GOVERNMENT PARTNERED WITH PAKISTAN WOMEN CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY TO HELP OPEN NEW INTERNATIONAL MARKETS

ISLAMABAD, August 13, 2020: More than 100 Pakistani women recently completed a virtual training on how to export their products and explore new international markets as part of a collaborative program conducted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and several Pakistan Women Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Under this first phase of the program, 115 women from various business and industry sectors completed five online training sessions on “Export Processes and Documentation.” Participants increased their understanding of formal export procedures, the role of key stakeholders, export documentation, and international standards.

In the second phase, businesses exhibiting strong export potential will receive logistics support to participate in international trade exhibitions, technical assistance to improve export potential and international market access, and mentoring from industry experts.

“Owning your own business is a brave and noble endeavor, and for a woman, it can be even more challenging, especially during this devastating pandemic,” stated USAID/Pakistan Mission Director Julie Koenen.  “We are confident that these virtual training sessions will provide these strong women entrepreneurs with the tools and resources necessary to open new markets internationally to sell their products and provide for their families.”

Many of the participants praised the training, saying that it is helping them adapt their business models to meet international market standards and practices.

“The training covered the entire regulatory, legal, transportation, and financing side of the export process,” said Shagufta Rahman who runs a handicraft business called Shop Wisely in Lahore. “By the end of the training, members of Lahore Women Chamber of Commerce and Industries not only understood the processes and key exporting terms, they also felt prepared to create a plan to take their products to international markets.”

The USAID-funded Pakistan Regional Economic Integration Activity (PREIA) is a five-year initiative to enhance development of Pakistan’s trade sector, including increasing women’s participation in international trade.

“I join the people and Government of Pakistan in celebrating the occasion of Pakistan Independence Day.

Pakistan has continued to strengthen as a nation during its 73 years of independence and Australia has been a steadfast friend throughout this time. As Commonwealth nations, we share many values, including a commitment to democracy and a rules-based order.

A hallmark of our bilateral relationship is that we have always stood alongside each other during times of crisis, and this has never been truer than during the global COVID-19 pandemic. With deep admiration, I recognise the resilience and resolve shown by Pakistan in the course of battling this virus.

Australia is proud to stand with the people of Pakistan as they continue to build a strong, open and prosperous country.

The Pakistani diaspora in Australia goes back to the arrival of Pakistani cameleers in the mid-19th century.  Since then, the dynamic Pakistani community has enriched the tapestry of Australia’s multicultural society, including in the fields of science, education, technology, medicine and the arts and through faith-based organisations.

I welcome our bilateral cooperation in education, trade, development, defence and security, as well as, our strong sporting and cultural ties. I am confident that our two nations will continue to strengthen our friendship well into the future.

Last-Gasp PSG beat Atalanta to reach Champions League semis

Lisbon : Paris St Germain scored two late goals, including a stoppage-time winner from substitute Eric Choupo-Moting, to beat outsiders Atalanta 2-1 and end the Serie A side’s Champions League dream in their quarter-final on Wednesday.

Atalanta, in their first Champions League campaign, went ahead with a curling effort from Mario Pasalic in the 27th minute and held out until the 90th when Brazilian defender Marquinhos equalised for the French champions.

With Atalanta wilting, Choupo-Moting turned the ball home in the third minute of added time to end Qatari-backed PSG’s embarrassing run of recent quarter-final and round of 16 exits and send them into the last four for the first time since 1995.

The Ligue 1 side will face either Atletico Madrid or RB Leipzig, who meet on Thursday, in their semi-final.

“When I came on, I thought to myself, ‘We can’t lose, we can’t go home like that.’ I was confident in myself, confident in the team and then the rest is the history of Paris,” said Cameroon international Choupo-Moting.

“It was a crazy game, a tough game and opponents.”

The first half was all about Neymar who had four good chances but squandered them all.

The Brazilian burst clear of the Atalanta defence in the third minute but sidefooted wide with only goalkeeper Marco Sportiello to beat.

He also got caught in two minds between shooting and passing to Mauro Icardi, shot wide after another mazy run which included a nutmeg and made a complete hash of another chance gifted to him by Hans Hateboer’s wayward back-pass.

Despite boasting only a fraction of PSG’s spending power, Atalanta were more than equal on the pitch and went ahead when an exchange of passes ended with the ball falling to Pasalic who met it first time to curl his shot past Keylor Navas.

Berat Djimsiti should have increased Atalanta’s lead after the break but sliced the ball wide and the game turned when PSG introduced their France striker Kylian Mbappe, who had not started because of an ankle injury.

Mbappe and Neymar were both denied by Sportiello but, as PSG ramped up the pressure, Atalanta finally cracked.

Cameroon forward Choupo-Moting’s cross found Neymar and he touched the ball to Marquinhos for his fellow Brazilian to fire home from close range. Minutes later, Neymar sent Mbappe down the left and his low cross was turned in by Choupo-Moting.

Atalanta had a chance to equalise but Luis Muriel, after breaking clear, ran the ball out of play and his team mates slumped to the ground in despair as the final whistle went.

Atalanta, a rare case of a team from outside the elite group of European clubs making the last eight of the competition, are based in Bergamo which was at the epicentre of the new coronavirus pandemic in Italy earlier this year.

Samarkand human Rights Forum on youth2020

The draft convention o n youth lays norms and principles inter alia:

Strengthening the institution of the family, recognises the diversity of young people, and the need to promote and protect human rights at All stages

JUSTICE ALINAWAZ CHOWHAN

Let me congratulate the Republic of Uzbekistan, the national Human Rights center and the office of the OHCHR and other sponsors for carrying forward the vision for developing international standards for the protection of youth rights put forward by H.E the president of Uzbekistan at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly on sept19th 2017. And today we have the draft of the convention to be adopted and ratified

This convention takes into account the interests and needs of various groups of 1.8 billion young people the largest ever in the world. The young generation, as a social subject need comprehensive support from the state not confined to declarations through black letters. This is possible through allocation of resources, recognising the importance of the youth and involving them in statecraft.

What is causing great concern is the decadence in the general health, education, wellbeing, employment of the youth. The lack of a healthy lifestyle, the presence of high level of morbidity, drugs, alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking abortions low productive attitudes.

What is also causing concern is increase in nationalists sentiments marginalisation criminalisation of the youth environment in different regions with youth unemployment.a t

The absence of a convention addressing these issues creates difficulties for creation of a legislative framework in the field of state youth policy. Which should be based on on the principles and norms enshrined in a fresh convention on the rights of the youth. The previous documents on Youth rights do not contain any criteria for measuring progress in achieving the broad goals.

In Pakistan youth participation was through attachment after an educational program with industrial and commercial units and government sectors where the internee also got a sustenance allowance. But it was a policy confined to that government. Presently our government is engaging youth in what is called as its tiger program for tree plantation and checking hoarders. Previously we had youth hostels to encourage social contact.

. The idea of involving youth in social service before they completed education was a German idea. Some countries like Switzerland go was conscription. It it’s all ad hoc.

The draft convention o n youth lays norms and principles inter alia:

Strengthening the institution of the family, recognises the diversity of young people, and the need to promote and protect human rights at All stages. It speaks of the emotional cultural and spiritual needs of young people. It gives special attention and support to youth living in difficult conditions. It also speaks of the need of international cooperation and deepening exchange of experience interstates based on the needs of the people

It will help implement the UN youth2030 strategy and will ultimately ensure the achievement of the sustainable Development goals

This will remove the despondency prevalent in youth forcing them-out in the streets protesting and destabilising the law and order.

I support uzbekistan and all the sponsors of the convention

Give until Aug 30 to clean Karachi drains, Sindh govt requests SC

KARACHI : The Sindh government on Thursday requested the Supreme Court to give it until August 30 to clean Karachi’s stormwater drains.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, was hearing a case related to illegal encroachments on drains at the apex court’s Karachi registry.

The Advocate General (AG) submitted a report on behalf of the local government secretary, informing that work on cleaning of drains is underway. 50 per cent of the city’s Gujjar nullah and 20 per cent of CBM Nullah have been cleaned, he said.He said that Sindh Govt has undertaken the task with cooperation of the World Bank. He added Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has assured that all drains will be cleaned until August 30.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan, a member of the bench, questioned why the government is reluctant to work with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to clean drains.

CJP Gulzar remarked that the actual issue is that the Sindh government will risk losing World Bank funds if it is not allowed to clean drains on its own and asked if the government had spent funds in a transparent manner in the past.

He reprimanded the AG on presenting pictures of cleaned nullahs in court, questioning what was he trying to prove by doing so? “Karachi’s population is more than 30 million. By cleaning two-three nullahs, you say Karachi’s problem has resolved.”

Kashmiris Struggle to get Rid of Indian Yoke

Iqbal Khan

Generation after generation Kashmiri men, women and children have confronted and contested Indian occupation, brutality and incarceration. Pakistan continues to provide political and diplomatic support to the people of the occupied valley. India is violating international laws in the valley. The World must take note and warn Delhi about the implications of its actions in the region.

Indian siege can’t conquer aspiration of Kashmiri people and asks world community to restrain apartheid Indian state’s atrocities in held valley. But no amount of brutality can break the will of the Kashmiri people & aspirations for freedom from occupation. We salute their courage. Every Pakistani stands by them in their just struggle for self determination

Former India-appointed interlocutor on Kashmir, Radha Kumar, has said that everything has become worse in occupied Kashmir since August 05, 2019. Narendra Modi-led fascist government in New Delhi had repealed the special status of occupied Kashmir on 5th August, last year, and placed the territory under military siege, which still continues. Radha Kumar in an interview with Arab News, an English-language daily newspaper published in Saudi Arabia, said, “In this one year, everything has become worse. The alienation is worse, anger is stronger, cynicism is more pronounced and the sense that India wants to quash and humiliate Kashmiris is stronger”. She cited new measures taken by New Delhi – such as a domicile law where outsiders can become residents of occupied Kashmir, a media policy to control the territory’s media and a building law allowing the Indian military to buy land and make a permanent structure – that are fueling strong resentment among people.

Radha Kumar is one of the 21 high-profile Indian and Kashmiri activists who prepared a report on Kashmir released a year into India’s lockdown of the territory. The 70-page report, “Jammu and Kashmir: The Impact of Lockdowns on Human Rights,” which was recently released by New Delhi-based Forum for Human Rights – a rights body comprising prominent jurists, former diplomats and academicians – said that the economic, social and political impact of India’s actions had been disastrous.

An informal group of prominent Indian citizens “Forum for Human Rights in Jammu and Kashmir” has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government to revoke harsh measures in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K) by balancing security considerations with the public interest. The group including seven former senior judges of the Indian supreme court and chief justices of various high courts, five ex-top bureaucrats, and three senior retired defence officers in a report said the constitutional changes undertaken by the Indian government on Aug. 5, 2019, have bewildered Kashmiris and left them stunned and dumbfounded. The group headed by Justice Madan BhimaraoLokur, a former judge of the Supreme Court and Radha Kumar, underlined that the absence of a multi-dimensional dialogue for settling the Kashmir issue between the New Delhi and Kashmiri leaders, and India and Pakistan, has given rise to anger, despondency, and despair among people. Group has emphasised that impact of India’s actions has been “disastrous”. “The economic, social, and political impact of these actions, and their long duration – eleven months thus far – have been disastrous,” said the report. The group said the impact on education has been particularly severe. ”Schools and colleges functioned for barely 100 days between 2019 and 2020, the bulk of which were pre-August 2019,” the report documented. It further said after the Covid-19 related lockdown when schools and universities moved to online classes across the world, in Kashmir the permission of 2G facility instead of 4G did not allow digital learning. The report said the events after August 2019 have plunged the region into a sharp downward spiral. Quoting trade bodies, the eminent citizens’ group recorded total losses incurred to the businesses over the last one year from August 2019-June 2020 have reached 400 billion rupees ($5.3 billion). In the first four months of lockdown, Occupied Kashmir’s industries had suffered a loss of 178 billion rupees ($2.4 billion). Demanding release of all remaining political detainees and juveniles who were taken into preventive detention on or after Aug. 4, 2019, the former judges noted that dozens of public interest petitions challenging human rights violations did not receive the prompt judicial attention.

Kashmiris have been fighting against Indian atrocities and leading a freedom struggle for decades. The IOJ&K has seen at least 229 killings during more than 100 military operations since January 2020, according to a recently released report by the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS).From January 1 to June 30, the region witnessed the extrajudicial executions of at least 32 civilians and the killing of 54 armed forces personnel, the report stated. It also saw 55 internet shutdowns and the destruction of 48 structures. The report said three children and two women were also killed, while at least “107 cordon and search operations and cordon and destroy operations were conducted in the region”.A strict lockdown and communications blackout has been in place in occupied Kashmir since August last year.

Research Section of Kashmir Media Service has recentlyissued an analytical report which revealed that over 450,000 Kashmiris have laid down their lives for Jammu and Kashmir’s freedom from Indian occupation and for its accession to Pakistan during the last over seven decades. The United Nations mustinstitute enhanced monitoring and documenting human rights abuses being committed by India in occupied Kashmir.

Decades of Indian atrocities have failed to suppress insurmountable spirit and legitimate freedom struggle of the Kashmiris, which is destined to succeed. And Kashmiris are not alone in their struggle. Pakistan has raised the issue of Kashmir on every international forum and has stressed that the World must not let Srebrenica-like massacre happen in occupied Kashmir. Entire Muslim Ummah also needs to become the voice of the people in occupied Kashmir.

The United Nations needs to take notice of Indian atrocities in the occupied valley.Writer is a freelance contributor, email: [email protected]
