Pak-China enjoy rich potential enhance cooperation in Agri sector: Chinese study

DNA

BEIJING, Aug. 31: Pak-Sino agricultural cooperation is still in the initial stage, with plenty of potential in technology, product processing, trade and infrastructure construction, says latest study done by Zhang Wenli and Zhai Xueling from Research Center, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China.

The Chinese study published by Gwadar Pro on Monday stated that Agriculture is the largest sector of Pakistan’s economy in terms of labor participation.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has a trade surplus with China in agricultural products. The volume of bilateral trade in this area has been growing strongly in recent years.

From $181 million in the year of 2010 to $476 million in 2019, China’s imports of agricultural products from Pakistan had increased by 163.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.3%.

However, facing the challenges due to climate change, pest attacks, water shortage, etc., Pakistan’s agriculture calls for increased productivity.

According to the study, the natural resource endowments between Pakistan and China are mutually complementary, which lays a solid basis for expanding cooperation as well as driving Pakistan’s agricultural progress through adopting advanced technologies in the future.

China has strengths in agricultural science and technology, mechanization, water conservancy engineering, etc. In 2019, the contribution rate of science and technology to China’s agricultural growth recorded 59.2%, and the mechanization level of crop cultivation and harvest in China exceeded 70%.

Simultaneously, the innovation of seed industry has been continuously promoted, and the coverage rate of improved seed varieties has been greatly improved.

Pakistan is rich in many agricultural production essentials like land and manpower. The per capita cultivated land area in Pakistan is twice that of China. Furthermore, Pakistan has a larger percentage of people in younger age groups than China.

Moreover, Pakistan’s increasingly improved investment environment, regulations and laws are also appreciated.

Currently, the yields of major crops in Pakistan such as wheat and rice are only about 50% of those in China. Therefore, the two countries can improve trade on each other’s high-quality seed, and strengthen joint research on seed variety improvement of wheat, rice, oilseed, sugarcane, etc.

Carrying out technical exchanges on planting, pest control, livestock breeding management, drought and flood disaster response is also necessary for lifting Pakistani agriculture’s overall level of technology and management.

In addition, water-use efficiency in Pakistan is relatively low. The two sides should enhance bilateral cooperation on water conservancy system, and drip irrigation technology and equipment.

It’s mentioned in the study that Pakistan’s prospect for developing labor-intensive agricultural products processing industry is bright. In this respect, future cooperation can mainly focus on the primary processing of agricultural products such as grain, livestock products and vegetables to make diversified supply of products.

The study also points out several barriers hindering Pak-Sino agricultural cooperation. The researchers suggest infrastructure of electricity, water and transportation be transformed or constructed.

As China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) develops, infrastructure and logistics in Pakistan will be significantly improved, which will give a new impetus to the bilateral trade in agriculture sector.

It added, the recent COVID-19 pandemic poses extraordinary challenges for almost all sectors of the economy of Pakistan. The need for maintaining food security and livelihoods has also gained more importance. Pakistan and China are all-weather strategic cooperative partners with time-honored friendship.

By deepening agricultural cooperation with China, the productivity of major crops in Pakistan will be lifted to safeguard domestic food supply, and the whole sector will make steady progress fueled by high-techs.

Pakistan condemns incidents of desecration of Holy Quran in Sweden, Norway

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan on Sunday condemned recent incidents involving the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Norway, calling for respect of religious beliefs as “critical for global peace and prosperity.”

“Pakistan strongly condemns the recent incidents of desecration of Holy Quran in Malmo, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. The rise of such Islamophobic occurrences goes against the spirit of any religion. Freedom of speech can’t justify religious hatred,” Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said in a post on Twitter.

He added, “Ensuring respect for religious beliefs of others is a collective responsibility and is absolutely critical for global peace and prosperity.”

At least 10 people were arrested and several police officers were injured on Friday after clashes broke out at an anti-Muslim protest in Malmo, Switzerland.

The demonstration of about 300 people was connected to the incident of protesters burning a copy of the Holy Quran.

Rasmus Paludan, leader of the far-right Danish anti-immigration party Stram Kurs (Hard Line), was due to travel to Malmo to speak at Friday’s event, however, authorities pre-empted his arrival by announcing he had been banned from entering Sweden for two years. Police later arrested him near Malmo.

Across the border in Norway, a group held an anti-Muslim demonstration Saturday during which one woman tore pages from the Holy Quran.

Paludan last year attracted media attention for burning a copy of the Holy Quran.

Messi contract is valid, says La Liga, after he fails to attend medical

Barcelona: La Liga on Sunday released a statement saying Lionel Messi’s Barcelona contract was still valid, days after his shock announcement that he wants to leave the club and hours after he failed to attend a pre-season medical.

Messi’s failure to show for his medical underlined the 33-year-old’s determination to leave the club he has been with throughout his career.

The six-times world player of the year insists he has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave on a free transfer — a claim disputed by Barcelona and now by La Liga.

The ruling body said the only way a club can sign the Argentine forward is if he triggers a release clause of 700-million euros ($833 million).

“In compliance with the applicable rule, La Liga will not approve a request to be de-registered as a player with the Spanish football federation, unless the amount in the release clause has been paid,” La Liga said.
Reuters footage showed players arriving for coronavirus tests on Sunday morning and Messi did not appear. He had been due at Barcelona’s training ground at 10.15am local time but a club source confirmed to Reuters he had not arrived.

La Liga’s stance is a blow to Messi’s hopes of a quick departure and to those clubs wishing to sign him.

Premier League Manchester City are the favourites which would allow Messi to link up with his former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola but even the Abu Dhabi-owned club might find a 700 million-euro fee, plus Messi’s huge salary, a deal-breaker.

Messi, who has won more than 30 major trophies with the Spanish club and scored more than 600 goals, earns around one million euros per week.

He informed Barca on Tuesday he wished to leave immediately, plunging the club into new turmoil less than two weeks after their humiliating 8-2 Champions League quarter-final defeat by Bayern Munich.

Messi’s lawyers plan to invoke a clause in his four-year contract, signed in 2017, which would have allowed the forward to leave the club for free if he had requested it by June 10.

They will argue that that date — nominally the end of the season — is now irrelevant after the coronavirus pandemic forced an extension of the La Liga season deep into August.

Messi’s adoring fans at Barcelona were split over his apparent determination to force a move.

“A captain cannot abandon ship if it is sinking, but there isn’t much time left until the end of his career and he has the right to choose what he wants,” Eva Domingo, 39, said as she took a photo of graffiti depicting Messi as Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara pulling along a suitcase saying Manchester.

“I think he should sit down and talk if he wants to go, he should pay 700 million, and if not, then one more year here,” said Pablo Garcia, wearing an FC Barcelona face mask.

Rawal Dam level surges to red mark, spillways to open today

ISLAMABAD : The water level at Rawal Dam has surged to red mark and the reservoir management has decided to open spillways of the dam.

Rawal Dam authorities in a statement announced opening of the spillways at 11:00 am today (Monday).

“Around 6000 cusecs of water will be discharged from the lake,” according to the administration.“Rawal Dam reservoir has maximum capacity of 1752 feet water conservation, while present water level at the dam has been 1751.9 feet,” the dam management said.

“After opening of the spillways the water level at Soan river will rise and water could overflow from the banks of the stream,” the dam administration said.

Soan River is an important stream of the Pothohar region in North Punjab and drains much of the water of the area.

It is pertinent to mention here that monsoon season this year has rained more water over Pakistan filling three major reservoirs in the country to their maximum capacity.

The Water reservoir of Mangla Dam reached to its maximum water conservation capacity of 1242 feet, on Saturday, according to Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) sources.

Earlier, the water reservoir at Tarbela Dam had also reached its maximum capacity of 1,550 feet.

Currently, the cumulative quantum of water available at present in Mangla and Tarbela reservoirs stands at 13.336 million acre-feet (MAF) which is a record for water availability during the last 10 years.

The Hub Dam in the outskirts of Karachi also overflowed on last Thursday evening after a spell of heavy rainfall in Karachi and other parts of Sindh and Balochistan.

The dam’s water level rose close to its maximum capacity of 340 feet after almost 13 years and water had begun to flow outside it.

The dam, located at the Sindh-Balochistan border, supplies water to Karachi and Hub.

The Hub Dam, located 56 km from Karachi with a total capacity of 339 feet, is extended to 24,300 acres with a gross storage capacity of 8,57,000 acre-feet water.

It is Pakistan’s third-largest dam and an important source of water supply to Karachi.
