PDF, PCFAinitiate plantation drive in COMSATS University

PESHAWAR – September 12, 2020: Following the moto of green and clean Pakistan, the Pakistan Development Foundation (PDF) and Pakistan China Friendship Association Khyber Chapter (PCFA) planted plants under the banner of their ongoing joint project Pak China Friendship Tree Plantation Campaign 2020 at COMSATS University, Abbottabad the other day. The project aims at planting 20,000 trees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The Chairman of the PDF, Muhammad Bilal Sethi and Secretary General of PCFA, Syed Ali Nawaz Gilani planted honorary saplings that symbolically initiated the plantation campaign on campus. On this occasion, senior faculty members of COMSATS University and President of Transgender Development Association, Shah Faisal Khan Sudam were in attendance.

The Secretary General of the PCFA, Syed Ali Nawaz Gilani and expert of Pak China diplomatic matters while addressing the ceremony remarked that students can play a role of paramount importance in tree plantation campaign. He said that the youth should voluntarily plant trees as one tree contributes in many ways. Chairman of the PDF, Muhammad Bilal Sethi said that in order to curb global warming, we have to plant trees which inevitable for this. While condemning deforestation, he said that it adversely impacted our environment and the only way to undo this damage is planting trees everywhere.

The President of Transgender Development Association, Shah Faisal Khan Sudam announced that they would also indulge transgenders in this activity of planting trees. At the end, shields and souvenirs were presented to the Chairman Pakistan Development Foundation, Muhammad Bilal Sethi and Secretary-General Pakistan China Friendship Association, Syed Ali Nawaz Gilani on behalf of the COMSATS University by Dr. AfzaalMoshadi.

EU-Indonesia reaffirm commitment to Green Growth

  • BRUSSELS: The Minister for National Development Planning/ Head of Bappenas of the Republic of Indonesia Suharso Monoarfa, together with the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Mr Vincent Piket, launched the EU-Indonesia Cooperation Publication 2020 in a virtual online event in Jakarta on Thursday (17/9). Encapsulating efforts in advancing sustainable development to mitigating the impacts of climate change, the publication also highlights key achievements of the EU and its Member States’ development programmes with Indonesia.“We are aware that the post-pandemic-economic recovery period would be challenging, especially on how to keep the economic recovery efforts still on the sustainable development track. The sustainable environment is one of the national priorities and agenda that needs to be considered on all sector’s targets. We believe that efforts to pursue quality economic growth can only be obtained if, at the same time, we also preserve the environment,” Minister Monoarfa said via video conference.With a partnership that spans over 40 years, the EU and Indonesia have made great progress in addressing joint priorities and global challenges, including addressing the current health crisis and addressing climate change. In all these areas, cooperation projects aim at exchanging knowledge, developing skills and building capacities, which is reflected in this year’s publication theme, “Building Capacity for Green Growth”.In response to the global health challenge, the EU and its Member States have recently launched a “Team Europe” package to support Indonesia’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. A total of EUR 200 million (approximately IDR 3.4 trillion) have been dedicated to supply protective equipment, work with civil society and vulnerable groups, and investments to strengthen the health sector. Looking forward, cooperation with Indonesia will include innovative methods to finance the green transition, urban development and the sustainable management of natural resources.“The coronavirus pandemic is the most abrupt and biggest social and economic shock of our generation, affecting all societies globally. As “Team Europe”, the EU and its Member States are determined to cooperate with Indonesia to face the crisis. Rice traders organizes training workshop for rice value chain

ISLAMABAD, Sep 17 : The rice traders organized safety and capacity building training workshop for rice millers and other agriculture sector stakeholders in rice value chain, especially to protect the work place rights of woman rice transplanter.

The Rice Partners Pvt Ltd (RPL) one of the top rice exporter of Pakistan in collaboration of Helvetas Pakistan and Swiss Solidarity piloted another Phase-III training workshop to train the agri-workers associated with rice value chain to create awareness of field work for women agri-workers,said a press release issued here on Thursday.

The development sector organizations also involved in the training process to sensitize the agriculture women workers about fundamental rights of the children of female agriculture workers,especially the rice transplanters.

The Rice Partners Pvt Ltd (RPL) one of the top rice exporter of Pakistan in collaboration of Helvetas Pakistan and Swiss Solidarity piloted a training workshopato train the rice millers, development sector organizations to sensitize them about fundamental rights of the children of female agriculture workers,á especially the rice transplanters, said a press release issued here on Thursday.

More than 40 rice mills including organizations from development sectors, academia and media personnel participated in the event.

Manager Sustainability RPL, Zafar Iqbal while giving the opening remarks highlighted the initiatives of RPL to promote and ensure decent working conditions in rice value chain of Pakistan.

He said that RPL started its philanthropic work from the development of farmers and now it has expanded to the labourers of agriculture sector.

Zafar said that RPL has trained more than 2,8000 farmers on sustainable rice production and also provided them the facility of land laser leveling on 50% cost sharing basis..

Manager Sustainability RPL also narrated that RPL is also working for welfare of agriculture labor. RPL established Community Mother Centers at multiple villages of district Sheikhupura in which decent environment was provided to the children of agriculture labour particularly female rice transplanters.

He added that Free Medical Camps were also organized to provide free medication to the rice transplanters at their working places throughout the rice transplanting season.He said that around 15,000 families engage in rice transplanting every year only from district Sheikhupura and more than 100,000 from all over the Punjab.

A common practice is that all members from a family take part in transplanting work and children from those families also accompanied their parents.

Renowned Senior Child right activist and consultant Ms Sadia Hussain said that physical, emotional and psychological health of children belonging to agriculture labour must be considered for a conducive working environment in the rice value chain.

She said that the protection of children and vulnerable adults is a collective societal responsibility.

She said that we must protect the fundamental rights of children particularly right to name, education, health, safety, security; freedom of expression, freedom of association without any discrimination on the basis of race, colour, gender, religion, caste and creed.

She further added that children particularly children of agriculture sector labour must be protected against abuses, violence, forced labor and any physical or emotional torture.

Senior Corporate and Development sector Consultant, Annan Waffi Qureshi on the occasion said that juvenile rights should be prioritizedin every sector including the agriculture sector.

He highlighted the mode of communication to create the awareness for a children’s rights and their protection, especially who belongs to the  families working in the rice value chain.

He said that to engage the children in labour work whether forcefully or voluntarily is now a crime in Pakistan and everyone who is present here must raise his/her voice against this crime. He also highlighted the referral mechanism to report the cases of violation of rights of children. He further added that there are a number of government and non-government organizations that are working for protection of rights of children.

Child Protection and Welfare Bureau and Search for Justice are the prominent institutes which are particularly working for protection of children and stopping violations of their rights.

Field Manager, Helvetas Swiss Inter cooperation, Mr. Zahid Rehman also addressed the participants on the occasion.

He said that working conditions of the farms were highly hazardous and exposed children to several risks of insect bites,injuries and infections, exposure to extreme heat and pesticides without any shelter.

Rehman added that keeping in view the hazardous conditions of farms Helvetas and RPL provided moveable backpack canopies covered from all sides to the children of rice transplanters to avoid the insects and provision of shelters along with the dry food, repellents, and water coolers in rice cultivation region of the Punjab.

He further added that similarly, for the larger group of families working jointly at farm

level, a bigger shelter tent along with solar plates, fans, air cooler, water cooler and first aid boxes were provided to keep the children in a healthy and safe environment at farm level.

ANF seizes 462.500 Kg drugs worth US$ 2.54 Million

ISLAMABAD: Determined to uproot drug menace from the country and the world, Anti Narcotics Force Pakistan seized 462.500 Kgs Narcotics worth US$ 2.54 Million internationally, arrested 8 culprits and impounded 4 vehicles while conducting 10 counter-narcotic strikes. The seized drugs comprised of 59.600 Kg Hashish, 0.190 Kg Heroin, 2.710 Kg Methamphetamine and 400 Kg HCL.

ANF KP, Police Station Kohat in collaboration with Kurram intelligence team, Kurram near Chutta Durrani Nullah intercepted Toyota Corolla Car, however said car tried to escape and after some distance, Driver of the car managed to fled away. After detailed search 30 Kgs Hashish recovered from trunk of the said car. In another operation, the staff of Police Station Peshawar intercepted a consignment from a truck parked at Torkham Border which was proceeding to Afghanistan (laden with HCL) and other consignments. Said truck was allowed to proceed (less HCL consignment) without affecting other consignment on truck. Suspected four drums of Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) were labeled as Black Powder Industry Nowshera, which were booked by one Gul Agha (Afghani). Ground check of same has revealed that no such industry exists and no legal documents have been produced. FIR has been logged against Afghan national by Police Station Peshawar & 400 Kgs HCL was seized. In third operation, on a tip-off the staff of Police Station Regional Directorate Peshawar intercepted a courier parcel at TCS franchise, GB Plaza Karkhano Market Peshawar which was booked for District Hafizabad and seized one loud speaker. During detail search190 grams heroin & 1.200 Kgs Hashish were recovered which was tactfully concealed inside the loud speaker. Initial investigation revealed that sender accused namely Wajid resident of Peshawar and recipient Sajid Mehmood resident of Hafizabad were involve in this case.  In fourth operation, ANF KP, Police Station DI Khan recovered 2.400 Kgs Hashish from arrested accused Zahir Khan resident of DI Khan at Daraban road which was wrapped with his body. In fifth operation, Police Station Mansehra intercepted a Motorcycle at main Shahra-e-Resham near food Hut restaurant and recovered 1.200 Kgs Hashish from personal possession of the arrested accused Usama Younas resident of Mansehra.

ANF Rawalpindi, Police Station Regional Directorate Rawalpindi established a naka near Motorway link road, Tehsil & District Islamabad and recovered 1.200 Kgs Hashish from arrested accused Sadique Akbar resident of Charsadda. In another operation, Police Station Regional Directorate Rawalpindi established a naka near Motorway link road, Tehsil & District Islamabad intercepted two passenger who were travelling on passenger Bus and recovered 1.200 Kgs Hashish from arrested accused namely Rawaiz Khan and Irfan residents of Nowshera. In third operation, the staff of Police Station Regional Directorate Rawalpindi established a naka at Motorway link road Tehsil & District Islamabad and recovered 2.400 Kgs Hashish from personal possession of the arrested accused Muhammad Tariq resident of Narowal.

ANF Karachi, the staff of Police Station Gulshan-e-Iqbal Karachi intercepted a Corolla Car near Total Petrol Pump Al-Asif Square Sohrab Goth Karachi and recovered 20 Kgs Hashish from said vehicle. Two accused namely Sher Khan resident of Qilla Abdullah and Aziz Ullah resident of Quetta were arrested on the spot. In another operation, ANF Karachi, the staff of Police Station-II, Korangi, Intercepted a parcel at Leopards Courier Company Karachi booked through Leopards Courier Office Peshawar being sent to KSA and recovered 2.710 Kgs Methamphetamine which was soaked in six gents dresses. During investigation it came to surface that the sender name of accused Waheed Ullah resident of Peshawar and recipient name  Umer RahimMeena resident of Saudi Arabia.

All cases have been registered at respective ANF Police Stations under CNS Act 1997 and further investigations are underway.

Pakistan elected to UN social council

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been elected to the Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) by securing 52 votes from the 54-member United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This overwhelming support constitutes 96 percent of the total tally.

Pakistan’s reelection to the CPC is a resounding validation of Pakistan’s meaningful engagement within the United Nations as well as its contributions in the areas of international economic cooperation and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Committee functions as the main subsidiary organ of ECOSOC and the UN General Assembly for Planning, Programming and Coordination of the work of the United Nations.The CPC is also charged with reviewing UN programmes and making recommendations to the UN Secretary General on translating legislativemandates into programmatic activities.

Pakistan’s presence at the Committee will help us contribute to the effective formulation of the programmes and budget planning of the United Nations.

Pakistan has been a member of this 34-member Committee since 1973, and with its latest reelection, would serve on it from 2021 to 2023 for another three-year term.

Pakistan is also presently serving as the President of ECOSOC at the United Nations which is one of the principal organs of the UN and the central platform for economic and social development, forging consensus and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed development goals.

We are hopeful that with our reelection to the CPC, Pakistan will continue to work hand-in-hand with the international community for promoting theshared goals of international cooperation and economic and social development, as enshrined in the UN Charter.

PCB signs satellite broadcast deal with PTV Sports, expects $200m from agreement

LAHORE : The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday inked a satellite broadcast deal with the national sports television and signed a further agreement to secure cable distribution with I-Media Communication Services.

The broadcast deal will be effective for the 2020-2023 cycle.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Prime Minister Imran Khan who is also the patron of the Board.

Speaking on the occasion, PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani thanked the premier for his support.

PCB will be soon finalising the grant of its broadcast rights for international territories separately as well as launching a new structure for its digital media rights.

The broadcasting arrangement is structured to provide increasing revenues over the term of the cycle and PCB expects to earn in excess of $200 million over the three years.

While addressing the signing of the agreements, the premier had said that it is imperative that PTV takes lead in the country’s sports coverage, especially cricket, given the huge fan following of the game in Pakistan.

Recalling the times when the state-owned PTV was broadcast across South Asia, the premier said: “As they say, you survive when you adapt. Unfortunately, due to myriad reasons [that I don’t want to discuss right now], our national broadcaster lagged behind the rest of the world.”

We hope that with our newly-introduced reforms the institution will see an improvement, with better revenues and quality of content, he added.

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi received Ambassador of the European Union Ms. AndroullaKaminara at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, yesterday.

The Foreign Minister lauded the European Union’s support for Pakistan to counter the coronavirus crisis.

The Foreign Minister stressed that a peaceful Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan and the region. Welcoming the commencement of Intra-Afghan Negotiations, the Foreign Minister underlined Pakistan’s pivotal role in facilitation of the Afghan peace process. The Ambassador of the European Union acknowledged the positive role played by Pakistan in the peace process.

During the meeting the current status of relations between Pakistan and the European Union was discussed. Ways were considered to further deepen the relationship. Views were also exchanged on the path ahead for operationalization of the Strategic Engagement Plan (SEP) to enhance mutual collaboration in all spheres of cooperation.

Foreign Minister Qureshi underscored the dire human rights and humanitarian situation in IIOJK. He stressed that the European Union should play its role in highlighting the adverse human rights situation in IIOJK and alleviation of the sufferings of the Kashmiri people.

It was agreed to continue to work together for the advancement of Pakistan-EU partnership in all areas.

Babar Azam reaches another milestone

Karachi : Pakistan’s right-handed batsman Babar Azam has reached yet another milestone after he completed 5000 T20 runs while representing Somerset in Vitality Blast 2020.

Babar achieved the milestone in the 145th inning while playing a group match for Somerset against Glamorgan. The right-handed batsman scored 114 runs, his 4th T20 century, to lead Somerset to score 183-3 against Glamorgan.

It must be noted here that Babar made his T20 debut for Lahore Eagles in 2012. The lad then went onto represent Pakistani in 41 T20Is, 74 ODIs, and 29 Tests to date. He is now the skipper of T20Is and ODIs for Pakistan.

SC orders arrest of Mehar triple murder case accused in a week

ISLAMABAD : A bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the police to arrest absconding accused in Mehar triple murder case within a week.

A bench comprised of Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi ordered the DIG Hyderabad to present the investigation record of the triple murder case before the court in next hearing.

The bench in suo moto hearing of the triple murder in Mehar taluka in Dadu district of Sindh blasted the police performance and remarked that “police deliberately avoiding arrest of the accused.”“What practical steps the police has taken for arrest of the absconders,” Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar asked the DIG Hyderabad who was summoned in the hearing. “Police conducting raids to arrest the accused,” the DIG replied.

“Show the police diary of the raids,” the bench demanded. “Presently I have no police record,” the police officer replied.

“The assets of accused have been ceased, deputy commissioner informed the bench.

Advocate Umme Rubab Chandio told the court that the SHO, who was present in the murder has been reinstated. Police didn’t include him in the investigation. The government still failed to announce head money for arrest of the absconders, she said.

The bench sought explanation from Sindh government for its failure to announce bounty for arrest of the absconders.

“Police has failed to arrest the accused for last two and half year, what time it requires more to arrest them?” Justice Faisal Arab questioned.

The court ordered the police to arrest the accused within a week and adjourned further hearing of the case till next week.

Umm-e-Rubab, representing the aggrieved family, said that her father, uncle and grandfather were gunned down by two former PPP MPAs in 2018.

It is pertinent to mention here that Umme Rubab’s father Mukhtiar Chandio, grandfather Karamullah Chandio and paternal uncle Kabil Chandio were gunned down on Jan 17, 2018, within the remit of Faridabad police station, Mehar taluka of Dadu district.

Umm-e-Rubab is pursuing the triple murder case of her slain family members by herself.
