LAHORE : Punjab Information Minister Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan Monday said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Fazal-ur-Rehman are deceiving each other.

The provincial minister said in his video statement that the opposition has given four months for making deal with the government but all parties should know that Prime Minister Imran Khan will not NRO to anyone.

Fayyaz Chohan said, “Twelve opposition parties finalized corruption plan for next four months on Sunday. The nation witnessed such a plan of corruption in 2000 also.

“Former premier Nawaz Sharif was making alliance with erstwhile prime minister Benazir Bhutto on one hand and finalizing deal thorough his frontman with the then Army Chief Pervez Musharraf on the other.

“As a result, Nawaz Sharif went abroad with around 100 suitcases and personal servants.

“The nation was given the lollipop of the Charter of Democracy on 2006 in which it was decided that the signatories will not contact any dictator but Benazir Bhutto made a deal with Pervez Musharraf regarding her return to Pakistan and took NRO.

“Nawaz Sharif deceived the opposition through the platform of the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) in 2008 and contested elections after making other parties to boycott the polls.”

Afridi claims four wickets on 4 balls to etch his name in history

ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 :Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi starred in Hampshire’s win over Middlesex in the Vitality Blast with a sensational spell, bagging four wickets on as many balls.

Afridi also became the first Pakistan bowler to take four wickets in four balls in a T20 match.

He single-handedly ran riot against the Middlesex batting line-up finishing with excellent figures of 6/19 in his four overs.

Chasing the target of 142 runs, Middlesex were heading close to a victory with John Simpson playing a brilliant knock. However, Afridi went all guns blazing in the 18th over of Middlesex’ chase and cleaned up four batsmen on four successive deliveries. He started off by removing Simpson on 48 before accounting for the dismissals of Steven Finn, Thilan Walallawita and Tim Murtagh.

The 20-year-old nailed four perfect yorkers to castles the stumps of the four Middlesex batsmen and scripted history. His six-wicket haul is the best ever figures for any bowler for Hampshire in Vitality Blast T20.

He was adjudged the Man of the Match for his stellar spell as Hampshire defeated Middlesex by 20 runs.

In reply, Middlesex also got off to a poor start losing two wickets inside 14 runs. However, Simpson took charge on one end and led the fightback for his side. He scored a gritty 48 off 40 balls but failed to find support from his teammates as Afridi ran riot with the ball. OIC Contact Group on Kashmir calls for ending India’s rights abuses, self-determination for Kashmiris

NEW YORK, Sep 21 : The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir, which met in New York on Sunday, voiced “deep concern” over the continued human rights violations by India in occupied Kashmir, and called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Security Council and the Human Rights Council to take steps to end those abuses.

The meeting, which was requested by Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, was held on the eve of the UN General Assembly’s high-level debate opening on Tuesday.

Attending the meeting were permanent representatives of Saudi Arabia, Niger, Azerbaijan and Pakistan. The OIC Secretary General was represented by the Permanent Representative of the OIC Observer Mission to the UN, Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev.

The OIC group discussed the worsening human rights situation in Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), according to a press release issued by Pakistani Mission to the UN.

Reaffirming its stand on the Kashmir dispute, the Contact Group also urged the UN chief to press India to rescind the unilateral and illegal measures taken on and after 5 August 2019 and to implement the Security Council resolutions calling for a plebiscite to enable the Kashmiri people to exercise their right to self-determination.

Conveying a special message of the Foreign Minister Qureshi to the meeting, Ambassador Munir Akram stated that the RSS-BJP regime in India was implementing what its rulers had themselves called a “Final Solution”.

The regime was engaged in systematically engineering a demographic change in IIOJK through new domicile rules, he said. The issuance of 1.6 million domicile certificates (since March) was meant to change the demography of IIOJK from a Muslim majority into Hindu majority territory.

In another attempt to obliterate the Muslim identity of occupied Jammu and Kashmir the status of Urdu language was being changed under a new legislation, the foreign minister said.

Indian claims of “normalcy” in IIOJK were fallacious, he said, adding that the joint communication by eighteen Special Mandate Holders of the Human Rights Council issued last month had termed the human rights situation in IIOJK was in a “free fall”. Hundreds of young Kashmiris were extra judicially killed in “fake encounters” and “cordon and search” operations while the Indian security forces continued to enjoy complete impunity under black laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Act (APSPA) and the Public Safety Act (PSA).

The Foreign Minister, in his special message, also sensitized the Contact Group about India having intensified its belligerent rhetoric against Pakistan, including threats of military aggression. In 2020 alone, India had so far committed over 2200 ceasefire violations.

There was a tangible threat of further escalation as India might conduct another “false flag” operation to justify renewed aggression against Pakistan, posing a serious threat to regional peace and security, FM Qureshi said.

To this end, the Foreign Minister emphasized that it was imperative for India to: immediately lift its inhumane military siege and rescind illegal actions taken since 05 August; remove restrictions on communications, movement and peaceful assembly; release incarcerated political leaders; free arbitrarily detained Kashmiris; reverse new domicile rules; remove draconian security laws; prosecute military and civilian personnel involved in massive human rights violations; and allow unhindered access to the OIC, the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) and UN Fact Finding Missions and the international media to investigate the human rights violations in IIOJK.

Nawaz Sharif should have announced return to Pakistan: Fawad Chaudhry

ISLAMABAD : Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has said that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif should have announced to return to Pakistan in his speech.

In his reaction over the former prime minister’s speech in APC, Fawad Chaudhry said that elder Sharif is inviting masses to initiate agitation movement, but he should have announced the date of his return to the country first.

The minister said he was not in favour of allowing Sharif to fly to London as he was not ill and added that his recent visits of resturants in London shows that he is fit and sound.

Nawaz Sharif should come back to country and serve his punishment, the minister added.
On Sunday, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had alleged in his virtual speech that the institution of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has turned into a tool for revenge against political opponents.

Nawaz Sharif, while virtually addressing the all parties conference (APC) hosted by Pakistan People’s Party, had thanked the participants of the event and prayed for health recovery of PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

Sharif said that he believed the organisation of the opposition’s APC as a decisive turn in the country’s politics and brave decisions are needed to be take.

Response to media queries regarding visa matter of senior Indian diplomat

DNA

ISLAMABAD, SEPT 20 – Responding to media queries, the Spokesperson said that leaking misleading information and twisting facts is not only contrary to diplomatic norms but is also not helpful in the conduct of diplomatic relations.

The news in certain sections of Indian media, quoting sources in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, regarding assignment visa for senior Indian diplomat Jayant Khobragade proposed as Charge d’ Affaires at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad,is misleading.

It may be recalled that following India’s illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Pakistan took a number of steps, including the downgrading of diplomatic relations with India. The purpose of downgrading the relations was to register Pakistan’s strong protest and condemnation of India’s illegal, inhuman and unacceptable actions in IIOJK.

Pakistan believes that by proposing a senior diplomat, who has already served as Ambassador in another post, India is trying to circumvent the effect of downgrading of diplomatic relations, which is obviously not in line with Pakistan’s decision.

However, keeping in view the diplomatic norms, Pakistan has counselled India to nominate an officer with seniority commensurate with Pakistan’s decision of downgrading the diplomatic relations.

As for the veiled threats in Indian media reports that the issue of grant of assignment visa to Mr. Khobragade will “further destabilize” India-Pakistan relations, it must be clear thatthe relations between India and Pakistan are inextricably linked to the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

A just and lasting solution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is critical for durable peace and stability in South Asia. Accordingly, India is once again reminded of its international obligations with regard to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. India must listen to the voices of the Kashmiri people and the world community.

Opposition’s APC: will it pose any threat to govt?

Unfortunately, in two years the sitting government has not been able to set things in order. It still has three more years. It has to deliver if it really wants to stymie opposition criticism; court people and complete its five year term, which it should as it has a mandate for that.

COMMENT

Ansar M Bhatti

THE hallmark of Sunday’s All Parties Conference (APC) was ostensibly appearance of Nawaz Sharif on the national hook-up after a long time. Despite a ban from PEMRA, the TV channels telecast his speech live. Nawaz Sharif expectedly delivered a strong anti-establishment tirade asking masses and leaders of the allied political parties not to allow non-political forces to divide them and then drive them with same stick in order to keep them under control.

Nawaz Sharif apparently wanted all political parties to stand up against this govt and ‘promoters and supporters’ of this govt with a view to sending a loud and clear message that the country can be run by political entities only.

Nawaz Sharif openly decided to defy the system and supporters of the system. He urged the APC leaders to wage joint struggle in order to bring true democracy back. Asif Zardari also made brief remarks and vowed to resist what he termed govt’s anti-opposition tactics. Bilawal and Shahbaz Sharif too delivered their speeches and assured to make the APC a success.

Apart from what transpired practically as a result of the APC, however the APC would surely serve as a morale booster for the workers of PPP, PML N and other allied parties. The political temperatures after this APC are likely to rise – a fact, which may prove a hard nut to crack for the government mainly because in last two years the government has failed to live up to the expectations of its voters and supporters and general public as well.

The Opposition, it appears, is playing pranks with its voters and people at large. It neither wants to dislodge government nor launch a full fledge anti-govt drive for the sake of its own ulterior political motives. And that is the point where its close ally Maulana Fazlur Rehman has serious problems. He wants the Opposition parties to take a clear cut stand when it comes to giving tough time to the government.  The opposition presumably cannot afford to dislodge the federal government because then it will lose its nuisance value and relevance that is has as being the members of the parliament. The Opposition parties have complete knowledge of the fact that they can be more effective and relevant as long as they are part of the system and that this system remains intact.

The problem of Pakistan People’s Party is that it cannot go beyond a certain point in its criticism of the government or when it comes to sending the federal govt packing. The reason is obvious that if it happens, PPP will surely lose its government in Sindh also. And losing the Sindh govt means losing Sindh in fact. PPP can wield its control over Sindh and its people while remaining in power. Even Governor’s rule in Sindh would badly harm PPP politics therefore it earnestly wants to avoid that eventuality also. Otherwise, the govt led by Imran Khan is surviving only with a razor-thin majority in case of mass resignations, way for early elections can easily be paved.

PML-N’s predicament is that it has to make inroads into Pakistani politics while maintaining a hardliner stance about Pakistani establishment. PML N is now known as an anti-establishment party and so is the PPP albeit both have different approaches towards relations with the establishment. PML N patron Nawaz Sharif and his daughter are not ready to work with the establishment, which was quite evident from Nawaz speech, while PML N President Shahbaz Sharif and his like-mined group in the party think differently. In fact this confused situation is leading PML N nowhere. It has to come up with a unified stand if it really wants to regain its political strength and relevance.

There is a wider consensus among opposition political leaders that it perhaps is the best time to get united and launch vigorous campaign against the government because public opinion is fast turning against the sitting government. Even die-hard PTI workers have started showing disenchantment and disappointment. According to them the government has failed to deliver. And no moment can be more opportune for the opposition parties to gird up their loins against the incumbent government than this that govt’s own supporters seem to have started speaking against it.

Summing up, if anything happens to the govt and it has to depart, it would be primarily because of its own shortcomings and governance issues. Unfortunately, in two years the sitting government has not been able to set things in order as per the wishes of people and its own manifesto. It still has three more years. It has to deliver if it really wants to stymie opposition criticism; court people and complete its five year term, which it should as it has a mandate for that.

FPCCI appoints environmentalist on Central Standing Committee

ISLAMABAD, SEPT 20 (DNA) – The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) president Mian Anjum Nisar has appointed well-known journalist and Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed as Deputy Convener of the FPCCI Central Committee on Environment with immediate effect.

The FPCCI president hoped that the induction of an environmentalist into his team would help develop a comprehensive strategy and an action plan to engage Pakistan’s corporate sector and industry to more environment friendly practices.

Talking to this scribe, Munir Ahmed said Pakistan’s industry and corporate sector is all out to adopt a new mechanism of environmental sustainability to be more competitive to the standards required for entering into the European and the US markets.

The investment does not only improve the environment around and cut the health cost of an industry, it also gives the industry to have more exports.

Ahmed said that with the support and guidance of the FPCCI president a model of sustainability reporting would be introduced for the industry engaged in exports. It would help in securing more exports to Europe and the US.

He said the environment is more than tree plantation, waste management and anti-littering campaigns. Pakistan’s business and industry sector should be introduced to the emerging sustainability trends to have more changes of business and trade globally.

We also need to support and appreciate businesses and industry having environmental compliance and fulfilling their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), he added.

Government is only interested in collecting taxes and that’s it. The federal and provincial governments should come up with a plan to encourage environment friendly industry by giving incentives to engage them into sustainable urban management.

It would make cities more sustainable and resilient to climate change impacts, he concluded.=DNA
