Nawaz trying to ‘blackmail’ Pakistan and its institutions to get relief in corruption cases: Shibli

ISLAMABAD – Information Minister Shibli Faraz on Sunday accused former prime minister Nawaz Sharif of “blackmailing Pakistan and its institutions” in order to get relief from the corruption cases against him.

“You (Nawaz) were elected by this country thrice and now you are going against it just because you want relief from your cases? You are blinded, you want to take revenge from the masses. You want to blackmail Pakistan and its institutions. This will not happen,” Faraz said in a press conference.

The information minister further said that the PML-N supremo had not “gotten along” with any of the institutions.

“You want judges like Justice Qayum. You have never gotten along with any army chief, from [retired Gen] Janjua to now. This is what you do: you destablise democracy. You are responsible,” Faraz declared and went on to say that the former prime minister was a “product” who came to power through the support of the establishment. The minister said that the incumbent government had a good relationship with the army because it was “full of honest people”.

The PML-N leader, Faraz added, was criticising the chairperson of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), who was appointed by Nawaz himself.

“Now you have become a revolutionary, [acting] like you are statesman. You are accused of theft! You were not sent to jail because of any political dispute, [it was because] of the crimes you committed,” the minister said.

The information minister went on to say that Nawaz “started a narrative” that had no connection to his cases. The PTI leader also said that Nawaz’s government had devalued the currency so much that, were it not for the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the country would have ended up in the same situation like Venezuela “where people take carts full of money to buy toothpaste”.

The information minister also cast doubt on the unity of the opposition parties that have formed the anti-government alliance named Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). The alliance includes almost all major opposition parties that seek the government’s ouster and has released its plan to launch nationwide protests and rallies. The first public meeting of the PDM will be held in Quetta on October 11.

PML-N is part of the alliance as well and the party’s supremo — who is currently in London — virtually addressed the first meeting of the PDM, where he cast doubt over the conduct of the 2018 general elections and workings of the parliament.

“How many parties agree with Nawaz’s point of view? They are already divided,” Faraz said in today’s press conference, adding that all politicians in the opposition wanted an NRO but Prime Minister Imran will never agree to give one. The federal minister said that the PTI had come to power with the promise to establish justice in the country and arrest politicians who were involved in corruption.

The minister also blamed previous governments, particularly that of PML-N, for expensive electricity and ruining the economy. He alleged that the Nawaz government had left the economy and the institutions “hollow”.

Maryam Nawaz held meeting with an Indian at Khokhar Palace: Shahbaz Gill

ISLAMABAD, Oct 04 (DNA): Special Assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan
for political communication Shahbaz Gill on Sunday claimed that Pakistan
Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz held a meeting
with an Indian at Khokhar Palace in Lahore.

He claimed that the PML-N vice president kept waiting at the same place
after the press conference and after the signal, she reached the meeting
place.

The SAPM said that the narrative of Maryam Nawaz and her father former
prime minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif is against the country,
therefore no one can bear its burden.

Reacting to the statement of PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah, Shahbaz Gill
tweeted, “If Rana sahib was asking, I would tell him that according to
my information, the meeting with an Indian took place at Khokhar
Palace.”

“Rana sahib, you are with Shehbaz Sharif, she will not tell you,” he
said. On Saturday, speaking to a private channel, the Special Assistant
had claimed that words from PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif was making
statements at the behest of Indian establishment.

He said that Nawaz Sharif’s son had a meeting with three people from
India in London while Maryam Nawaz also met with some Indians in the
past 15 days ago.

Shahbaz Gill said that Nawaz Sharif is a criminal and he does not have
the same rights as an ordinary citizen. He said that no one is calling
him a traitor, he himself is making speeches like MQM’s founder.

Shahbaz Gill clarified that there would be no negotiation with anyone on
accountability and corruption cases. He said that Nawaz Sharif has a
problem with the army because he is corrupt, which is why Prime Minister
Imran Khan has no qualms with the army. Nawaz Sharif’s problem is that
he wants to do corruption but not be held accountable, he said.

Circular Railway (KCR). The meeting decided to run the local trains from

1984 while it was halted in 1999. The Sindh government had taken
initiative for the revival of KCR in 2006. The estimated cost of the KCR
project was $2.6 billion at that time, however, JAICA dissociated from
the project after the feasibility process in 2012.”

Earlier on September 30, the Sindh cabinet had approved the release of
Rs97 million for Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project. The decision
was taken during a meeting of the Sindh cabinet chaired by Chief

Fabulous Fez!

Hamid Asghar Khan

One of the essential elements of diplomacy in the info-technology enabled era of instant and constant communication, is the rise in importance of Soft Power Projection. The image and perception of a country now form an important part of its national power matrix.

The enchanting city of Fez, just over 2 hours north of Rabat via excellent motorway, is the second largest city in Morocco with a population of 1.2 million. It is globally known for its magnificent architectural heritage, its culture, for the arts and as an ancient seat of learning. Fez receives over a million foreign tourists a year.

It was in the 8th&9th centuries that Arab immigrants from Tunisia and Al-Andalus (Spain/Portugal) brought with them the tradition of scholarship and commerce, turning Fez into the first imperial political capital of Morocco. It in fact remained the capital till 1925.

Numerous schools of learning, including those specializing in theology and many mosques were constructed in the early era by the settlers. Most of these are still operational, being counted among the jewels of Moorish -Moroccan architecture. The impressive royal palace is one of the largest in the Kingdom and a portion of the  extensive gardens were later graciously converted into an excellent public park on royal command.

A significant Jewish population used to live in the city, but has entirely migrated, retaining but renting out their properties in the Jewish quarter to Muslims. Moroccans of the Jewish faith settled abroad and the owners of the properties are among the many tourists that Morocco receives from Israel annually.

Remarkably, two Synagogues, dating back to the 17th century have been renovated by the German Foreign Office and UNESCO as per the vision of tolerance and moderation and respect for all religions of His Majesty the King. They contain unique ancient copies of the Torah inscribed on Gazelle skin. I was able to benefit from a specially arranged visit to the two restored synagogues-that otherwise remain locked due to absence of practitioners- courtesy the Honorable Deputy Mayor Mme. Dahmani Idrissi who graciously escorted me on my tour of the city.

The fascinating medina of Fez is the oldest and longest surviving such market, it is virtually a living, evolving organism and a World Heritage Site that is also the world’s largest urban pedestrian zone. A remarkable ongoing royal restoration project remains underway, acquiring and restoring ancient heritage buildings to their past splendor. The Medina also houses the famous Chouara Tannery from the 11th century, one of the oldest tanneries in the world.

The University of Al Quaraoiyyine in Fez was founded way back in 859 as a splendid Mosque that can accommodate 20,000 people. Remarkably it was founded by Fatima Al-Fihri-a lady of means of Tunisian provenance-and is considered to be the oldest functioning institute of higher education in the world, being the first to award degrees in medicine and veterinary science.

The historic Al Quarraoiyyine Library is home to ancient manuscripts including 9th century copies of the Holy Quran written on camel skin in Kufic script- the oldest form of Arab calligraphy. These are kept in special temperature and humidity controlled rooms. It was a fascinating privilege to be shown these treasures.

The Fez Medina has over 10,000 streets and alleys, spread over 300 hectares bisected by a river. In the alleyways, all type of traditional crafts including manual textile dyeing and brocade production on hand operated looms producing rich colorful fabrics can be seen. Place Seffarine is an enchanting triangular square where traditional brass and copper beaters and smelters remain at work under the shadow of a towering old leafy tree, producing handmade high quality cooking utensils since centuries.

The famous Fez Sacred music festival had its first edition in 1994 and maintains a strong link with Pakistan due to our strong Sufi music tradition. The Late Maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan participated in the vibrant festival a number of times and is well known here. This year’s on-line festival also happily has participants from Lahore which has a sister city agreement with Fez.

My father’s cousin Brigadier ® Zamir Ahmed Khan served as Pakistan’s Envoy to Morocco from1986-1990.Heremained Commandant of Pakistan Military Academy from 1974-1976 and later Chief of Protocol at the Foreign Office under President Zia from 1980-1986. It was Ambassador Zamir who took the commendable initiative of twinning Fez with Lahore way back in 1988 with then Mayor of Fez the Hon’able. Filali Baba.

Now, 32 years later, we are poised to build on this solid foundation thanks to the vision and support of our worthy Foreign Secretary Sohail Mehmood and the Honorable Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi who have specifically desired enhanced projection of our history and culture around the globe.

During my delightful visit to Fez, I was received and hosted with remarkable cordiality and courtesy by the Honorable Mayor M. Driss El Idrissi. We had excellent discussions and it will be my privilege to contribute towards developing the existing warmth between our two fraternal countries, bound by history, mutual respect and cultural ties.

He said that a new industrial estate was very important in Islamabad for the promotion of industrialization and he would do his utmost for its establishment.

He said that FBR has issued notices to various businesses for installation of POS devices but the business community has reservations about it so the tax department should remove their reservations before implementation of this system. He said that there was a possibility of gas crisis in winter while load shedding was taking place despite abundant availability of electricity.

He said that wheat and sugar crisis was also emerging so the government should take immediate corrective measures to overcome these crises. He said that the development agencies of the federal capital were facing shortage of funds so he demanded that just as the provinces were being given a share in the NFC award, Islamabad should also be given a share in the NFC award. CASS arranges webinar on Pak-Us relations

DNA

ISLAMABAD, OCT 4 – A webinar on ‘The US & Pakistan: Politics, Diplomacy and Economics under the Next Administration’was  organised by the Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies (CASS), in collaboration with the Association of Pakistani Americans.

The webinar was attended by senior members of PAK PAC, AP PAC, American-United PAC, Kashmir Solidarity Council, Pak-America Business Forum, Crescent Foundation, and ICNA Relief, amongst others.

While providing a brief overview, Mr Nadeem Zaman, President, Association of Pakistani Americans pointed out that since the US Presidential Elections are around the corner, it is important to discuss the diplomatic, economic, and political aspects of the US-Pakistan bilateral relationship and its future under the next administration.

In his Opening Remarks, Air Chief Marshal (Retd) Kaleem Saadat, President  CASS highlighted that  in view of US-China rivalry and US pivot to India, Pakistan will need to maintain a balance between its two vital partners.

Ambassador (R) Jalil Abbas Jilani, CASS Director on Foreign Policy, said that  Pakistan needs to maintain cordial relations with both Washington and Beijing. He added that while CPEC is a manifestation of China’s support to Pakistan, the US is equally important for the latter’s economic well-being since it is a major trading partner and export destination for Pakistani goods.

He also pointed out that not only has Pakistan proved to be an invaluable partner in the intra-Afghan dialogue, it is also in a position to act as a bridge between the US and China; and between Iran and the US.

Dr Usman Chohan, CASS Director on Economic Affairs and National Development highlighted that  the Government of Pakistan, unlike that of the US, took the COVID pandemic very seriously through a national coordination mechanism between the centre and provinces, along with both civil and military expertise and manpower. ‘Policies such as smart lockdowns and widespread public messaging further curtailed the virus’ onslaught, and reflected the sobriety with which the government mobilised, despite its resource constraints’, he shared.

On the issue of FATF, Dr Chohan clarified that Pakistani ‘suspicious activity reports (SARs)’ amount to $2.5 million out of more than $2 trillion – a tiny drop in the ocean, and begs the question of why Pakistan is constantly singled out for the FATF’s grey list and possible blacklisting.
He was of the view that regional and global connectivity projects like BRI and CPEC are progressive and bring hope for a more inter-connected world.
