Huawei Setting up Research and Development (R&D) Centre across European Countries

Islamabad 20th October 2020:- Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei is setting up a research and development centre in Budapest, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has confirmed.

The investment, which will create jobs for at least 100 Hungarian engineers, is Huawei’s third in Hungary, Szijjártó said. The cooperation between Hungary and China was better than ever. The investment represents a milestone in Hungary’s Opening to the East strategy, he added.

The new centre will focus on artificial intelligence, streaming, image processing, signal transmission technologies and extremely large distribution systems, he said. The development project will give the country an opportunity to further boost the reputation of Hungarian engineering skills, he added.

He noted that Huawei was the first Chinese company that Hungary signed a strategic cooperation with seven years ago. Players in the Hungarian telecommunications market have greatly relied on the company’s technologies over the years, he added.

The company’s logistics centre in Hungary is its largest outside China, Szijjártó said. He added that despite the pandemic, Huawei has announced a significant investment in Hungary, and he thanked the company for its donations to anti-pandemic efforts.

The Minister said the strategy of opening to the East had resulted in a 22 percent increase in Hungarian exports to the East over ten years and 25 percent growth in trade. Last year, 60 percent of investments, in value terms, in Hungary came from the East and 40 percent of new jobs were linked to such companies.

He said one of the main objectives of the strategy was to develop close, pragmatic cooperation based on mutual benefits with China. Over the past ten years, 5 billion US dollars-worth of Chinese investments have been carried out in Hungary, and Chinese companies employ 15,000 Hungarians, he added.

Szijjártó said it was easy to understand why Hungary was the first EU country to join the Belt and Road initiative. Last year, China was Hungary’s 10th most important trade partner, he added.

“Exploring China & India relations in global, regional and bilateral perspectives in 2020”

China Study Center, University of Peshawar has organized a Webinar on “Exploring China and India Relations in Global, Regional and bilateral Perspectives in 2020” on 20th October 2020 at 11 am at the Conference hall in the Center. Many renowned scholars delivered speeches/presentations on the theme.  The webinar started with the recitation of few verses of the Holy Quran.

Prof Dr Zahid Anwar, Director, China Study center, University of Peshawar welcomed the renowned scholars and other distinguished guests. He threw light on the purpose of the webinar and said that China and India are two important countries in the Asian continent and the two most populous states in the world as well. There is need to objectively analyze the nature of relationship between China and India. He further highlighted that unprecedented changes are taking place global and regionally and this is high time to discuss this important relationship in the context of BRI, CPEC, Trade War, Indo-Pacific Initiative, QUAD, SCO and BRICS.

Dr Talat Shabir, Director, China Pakistan Study Center, Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad in his speech comprehensively dealt with broader theme of China India Relations. He was of the view that the current global political system is led by the USA and in this situation both China and USA is pursuing their respective interests.

There are convergences and divergences between China and India. The important divergences between China and India are border dispute, CPEC, the rising influence of China in the region and the unfolding Indo Pacific Strategy. India is opposing BRI and CPEC. India expects support from USA to counter BRI and CPEC. China is aware of USA attempts to contain China. USA considers India important for containing China globally and regionally. China is following the policy of win-win and economic development. China and India should launch a dialogue to resolve their disputes.

Dr Ghulam Ali, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Sichuan University of Science and Engineering in his speech pointed out that a huge wisdom will be required to contain the conflict between China and India in the long run and India under PM Modi in this point in time lacks that wisdom.

Mr. Hasan Daud Butt, CEO, KPBIT in his presentation underlined that we live in unprecedented time and that in 2019 trade between China and India was around $90 billion. The industrial setup in India has not taken the shape the way they wanted especially under Modi regime.

COVID-19 showed the vulnerability of India where its economy is sliding down with much faster pace and that its inspiration and aspiration to become a military or economic power is also going down by the same speed.

On the other hand Chinese economy is rising in the post COVID era. He further highlighted that it would be momentous mistake by India to escalate the situation in Himalaya. Though India is not part of BRI but it is part of AAIB. China and India being members of BRICS are witnessing rise of Asia and both will not lose this chance.

Dr Minhas Majeed, Department of International Relations in her speech said that USA is trying to contain China and there is convergence of interests on this point between USA and India. She further underlined China India standoff in Himalaya and its implications for regional security. Indian aggressive moves in that region raise concern for the security of Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan and CPEC.

China has an upper hand in this confrontation and in case India curtails its trade with China it will further harm its economy. The standoff between China and India brought the attention of International Community once again to the issue of Kashmir. Pakistan and China both have concern over the abrogation of Article 370 / 35A.

Ms. Farhat Asif, president Institute of Peace and Diplomatic Studies, Islamabad, in her presentation highlighted the relations between China and India in regional perspective.

She talked about India membership in SCO and the recent skirmishes in Ladakh area between the two countries. She underscored that recent development in the region highlighted once again the importance of the resolution of Kashmir dispute.

Sayed Ali Nawaz Gillani, Secretary General, Pakistan China Friendship Associations discussed the issue in historical l perspective.

He analyzed stand of India on Tibet issue Dalai Lama and the region at large. Although India is a member of SCO yet it has opposed CPEC, he said. Pakistan China relations are based on solid trust and it is very rightly called all weather friendship while India lacks that sort of iron-clad relationship with China.

Dr. Manzoor Afridi, Chairman, Department of Politics & IR, IIUI, in his presentation highlighted that India and China cannot ignore each other. USA and India are trying to curtain China. India and China have trade relations but they also have clash of interest. India opposed CPEC. He also brought to limelight the divergences between USA and China for example South China Sea, trade war, COVID-19 and BRI. USA and India are trying to contain BRI under the umbrella of Indo Pacific Strategy.

The webinar was attended by large number of students, internees, faculty and scholars. In the end Prof Dr Zahid Anwar, Director, China Study Center, University of Peshawar thanked all the participants especially the honorable speakers.

Israel, UAE agree visa-free travel for nationals: Netanyahu

Israel and the United Arab Emirates agreed on Monday to reciprocal visa-free travel, making Emirati citizens the first in the Arab world to not require Israeli entry permits.

The deal was signed after the first-ever official delegation from the UAE landed in Israel for a day of talks following an agreement to normalise ties signed at the White House last month.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, wearing a mask as he greeted the UAE delegation at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv, described the visit as “a glorious day for peace”.

“Today, we are making history in a way that will stand for generations,” the right-wing premier said of the Israeli-UAE accord, which has been angrily denounced by the Palestinians.

The two states signed four agreements on Monday, including one “exempting our nationals from visas”, Netanyahu announced, arguing that free movement of people would offer benefits to the Israeli and Emirati economies.

Sindh forms committee to investigate Safdar Awan’s arrest

“The FIR registered against Captain (r) Muhammad Safdar Awan was based on a lie,” Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, he said that the Sindh government has formed a ministerial committee for an inquiry into the arrest of Safdar on Sunday.

The names of the ministers on the committee will be revealed later.

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz’s husband was arrested in Karachi under charges of sloganeering at the Quaid’s mausoleum and criminal intimidation, and public mischief. The case was registered at the Brigade police station.

Shah called the FIR fake. “We agree that sloganeering at the mausoleum was wrong but that case cannot be registered with the police. And this is what was first told to complainants who came to the police station initially.”

He explained that a complaint against any disrespectful action at the tomb can only be taken to the magistrate court and the police have nothing to do with it. “When they [PTI MPAs] saw that they couldn’t get an FIR lodged, they created a fake FIR using their own people,” the chief minister said.

Shah clarified that the Karachi police were not at fault in the matter and did everything lawfully.

He revealed that the complainant, identified as Waqas Ahmed, was an offender himself and was being backed by PTI MPAs who he refused to name. “We have pictures of these people visiting the police station.”

Coming back to sloganeering at Quaid’s tomb, he accepted that although what happened was wrong, it has happened multiple times before by the prime minister and his supporters as well. No action was taken then, he claimed.

“We will get a proper investigation conducted and everyone will be allowed to come and express their point of view. The PPP government always stands with the truth and will make sure justice is served,” he added.

Gul opens up about 2011 World Cup defeat against India

Former Pakistan fast-bowler Umar Gul has admitted that he regrets for not being able to put a match-winning performance in the 2011 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup semi-final against India in Mohali.

The 36-year-old recently retired from cricket after his side Balochistan were eliminated from the National T20 Cup on Friday.

The right-armer returned with figures of 0-69 from eight overs in the high octaine semi-finals against the arch-rivals nine years back where the Green Caps lost by 29 runs.

The Peshawar-born pacer, while talking to the local media as quoted by Cricket Next, said that the defeat still haunts him to this day.

“I will always regret that I couldn’t perform in that match,” said Gul. “That defeat hurts me, and will continue to hurt me. I believe that it was a match Pakistan deserved to win. We were in top form during the tournament but against India in the semi-final, we couldn’t do what we were able to.”

Speaking on the much-discussed DRS decision which went in favour of Sachin Tendulkar who was given out on the bowling of Saeed Ajmal, Gul said that his teammates were confident that the legendary batsman was out but were taken aback when the replay showed otherwise.

“I don’t know what happened there but it looked like that it was out. If we had managed to take Sachin’s wicket earlier, the result of match could have been different,” he said.

The pacer, who recently hung up his boots from the professional game, said that he was happy with the way his career ended.

“My career had several ups and downs, mostly because of injuries, but I remained focused and made a good comeback every time. Throughout my career, I was supported by my fans and they’re my biggest assets.”
