Ayaz Sadiq confidently lied over Abhinandan issue: Fawad Chaudhry

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Ayaz Sadiq lied confidently over Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman issue, who was captured by Pakistan on February 27.

Expressing his views on the floor of the National Assembly, Fawad Chaudhry said Pakistan gave a befitting reply to India after the Pulwama incident and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) hit the enemy after entering their territory.

He advised the opposition to recheck their behavior and added that criticism over the federal government is always welcomed but the state should not be subjected to criticism.
The federal minister said the government will only hold dialogues with the opposition on national issues, not on corruption cases.

Earlier in the day, Special Assistant to Prime Minister of Pakistan on Political Communication Dr Shahbaz Gill said that PM Imran Khan wanted peace and it was the only reason that Indian pilot Abhinandan was released.

Talking to ARY News, Dr Shahbaz Gill said that PML-N MNA, Ayaz Sadiq should be ashamed of himself over his statement on the floor of the National Assembly.

“Sadiq’s statement indicates his affection with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif”, while many of PML-N lawmakers do not agree with elder Sharif’s policy, he added.

LHC ban airing videos, photos of motorway gang-rape victim, suspects

LAHORE : The Lahore High Court (LHC) has imposed a ban on broadcasting videos and photos of gang-rape victim and suspects including Abid Malhi in motorway gang-rape case.

The Chief Justice of Lahore High Court (CJ LHC) Muhammad Qasim Khan issued a written order regarding a petition filed against the ban on media coverage of motorway gang-rape case.

The high court stated in its three-page written order that a ban is being imposed on broadcasting videos and photos to disclose the identities of the gang-rape victim, accused and co-accused.

Moreover, the high court summoned the records of press conferences organised by ministers and advisers regarding the arrests of the suspects.

A verdict given by a trial court for the imposition of a ban on reporting of motorway incident has been suspended by the LHC chief justice. It read that the anti-terrorism court’s judge had not taken care of the Punjab Witness Protection Act while imposing a ban on reporting.

It added that the ATC had ordered Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to stop print and social media from covering the incident which was not within its domain and ‘against the spirit of the Statute’.

The high court directed PEMRA to fully implement the recent order and adjourned the hearing for one week.

Earlier on October 2, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) had imposed a ban on media coverage of Lahore motorway gang rape case following the orders of an anti-terrorism court. The PEMRA had conveyed its decision via handout sent to all television channels and other broadcaste

Algerian president sent to Germany for ‘medical check-ups’

Algeria’s President Abdelmajid Tebboune has been transferred to Germany for what state TV says are “medical check-ups”.

Mr Tebboune had been admitted to hospital in Algeria on Tuesday.

The nature of his condition has not been revealed, but there has been speculation that he’s been infected by coronavirus.

On Saturday, Mr Tebboune went into five days of voluntary self-isolation at the advice of his doctors after many of his aides and government figures tested positive for Covid-19.

Mr Tebboune’s hospitalisation has come just days before a referendum on proposed changes to Algeria’s constitution, which the president very much wants to see approved.

Second coronavirus wave: Which countries have had to reimpose a lockdown?

As countries eased restrictions to kick start their economies, nine months after the coronavirus outbreak was first reported in China, there was still one fear on everyone’s minds: will the virus resurface?

The World Health Organisation has described the COVID-19 pandemic as “one big wave” which will go up and down. The best way to control the virus, a WHO official added, was to flatten it.

Still, people let their guards down to return to routine and the effects of that complacency are now being felt in many countries.

This week, as the positivity rate spiked in Pakistan, hitting 3%, the government decided to reimpose restrictive measures across major cities in the country.

Other countries, such as Spain and the United Kingdom, are also reordering stringent measures as new cases rise. But some are going even further to impose a second lockdown.

Here is a list of countries and territories across the world which have announced a nationwide lockdown, again:

France

Starting this week, France from tonight will undergo a second lockdown to try to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, French President Emmanuel Macron told the nation.

The new measures will continue till December 1 and will restrict people to their homes, unless they need to move for essential travel such as to seek medical care.

Israel

Back in September, Israel became the first country to reimpose a second lockdown when new infections rose to 4,000 a day.

Germany

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced a month-long lockdown in the country, which will include shutting down restaurants, gyms and theatres starting this week.

Wales and Northern Ireland

The territories will see a second stringent lockdown this week. In Northern Ireland, under the new rules, people will not be allowed to travel more than five kilometres from their home.

While in Wales, non-essential retail, leisure, hospitality and tourism businesses will close for two weeks.

Netherlands

In a bid to control the surging number of cases, Netherlands has also announced a four-week partial lockdown, as new cases rose to 10,000 per day.

Imran Tahir signs BBL deal with Melbourne Renegades

Karachi : Pakistan-born South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir has signed a Big Bash League (BBL) deal with the Melbourne Renegades.

The 41-year-old Tahir will be joined by Afghanistan’s 15-year-old Noor Ahmed. The left-arm ‘mystery spinner’ has played only one first-class match and 15 T20s. He represented his country as a 14-year-old in the Under 19 World Cup earlier this year.

According to Melbourne Renegades head coach, Michael Klinger said that Noor has been on the radar for more than a year.

“Noor is someone we have kept tabs on for over a year,” Klinger said in a statement.

“He’s someone who not many people have seen, which I think is a huge advantage to us, and he’s a player coming out on a mission to really put his name up in front of the world,” he added.

Tahir will join Renegades from Boxing Day, December 26. “I’ve watched the Big Bash from afar have admired how competitive it is,” Tahir said in a statement.

“I’m looking forward to joining my new Renegades teammates and working hard with them to produce a successful season,” he added.

It must be noted that Tahir has vast experience of T20 cricket. He has 380 wickets to his name in 303 matches.

SC upholds 3 death sentences for man who murdered wife, daughters

ISLAMABAD : A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by a convict challenging his death sentence in a triple murder case.

Headed by Justice Mansoor Malik, the bench upheld three death sentences awarded to Imran by a trial court for murdering his wife and two daughters over a domestic dispute. As a ditch-attempt, the convict moved the appeal in the apex court after the high court turned down his plea to overturn his conviction.

His lawyer contended before the bench that the prosecution failed to prove his client had any personal grudge with the deceased persons. At this, Justice Malik remarked the lawyer was suggesting that since there was no motive behind the murders, the convict should be set free. The appellant committed three murders and this is nothing in your opinion, he censured the counsel.

Earlier, on October 28, the SC had acquitted a murder suspect, Yaseen, after 12 years by giving him the benefit of doubt. Muhammad Yaseen has been imprisoned in Okara jail since 2008 over allegedly murdering a citizen over a minor dispute. He had been pronounced death sentence by a trial court and later it was converted into life imprisonment by the high court.
