Hamza Ali Abbasi wants all zoos in Pakistan to be shut down

From cancelling his Netflix subscription to condemning racist remarks made against minorities, Hamza Ali Abbasi has always been at the forefront of voicing his opinions and advocating for human rights—and animals are no different.

The Legend of Maula Jatt star recently took to social media to campaign against the derogatory treatment of animals located in the zoos in Pakistan.

“IHC rules that zoos are concentration camps for non-human living beings. It’s true. Caging animals for public entertainment is cruel and evil!” the Mann Mayal actor stated on social media.

“Pakistan has a chance to earn the respect of the world and make God happy by freeing all the animals in captivity,” he added, requesting the government to shut down all the zoos in the country.

Abbasi’s outrage came after the only zoo in Islamabad — which drew international condemnation for its treatment of lonely elephant Kaavan — closed on Wednesday after its final occupants were relocated abroad.

Encouraging others to partake in this social cause, the star looked up to his fans and followers for support.

“If you agree, please be the voice for those who can’t speak for themselves and make this hashtag trend for as long as we can, so maybe someone in the decision making arena may listen especially after IHC ruling. #CloseAllPakZoos.”

Earlier this week, the IHC observed that the “bears’ natural habitat was the high altitude plateau of Deosai National Park in the Himalayas”. “It was indeed inhumane to have deprived them of living in their natural habitat, merely for the entertainment of humans.”

India planning a surgical strike against Pakistan: Shah Mahmood Qureshi

ISLAMABAD – “I have received news from our intelligence agencies that India is planning a surgical strike against Pakistan,” Foreign Affairs Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said.

In a press conference on Friday, he said that India is trying to begin a new wave of terrorism in the country. “Whatever it is planning, India should beware that Pakistan will give a befitting response.”

The minister said that reports by multiple information labs have revealed the conspiracies India is planning against the country. “Pakistan is a peace-loving country but it also knows how to respond to any kind of threats.”

All these tactics are being used to divert attention from the pressing issue at the moment: the deteriorating situation of the Indian-Administered Kashmir.

Qureshi said that any step the neighbouring country takes will not just affect Pakistan but the entire region, especially Afghanistan.

The prevailing farmers’ protests in India and the government’s treatment of its minorities are proof of the barbarian policies of the Modi government, he added.

The minister had flown to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a two-day visit recently. During the visit, he held discussions with the UAE leadership on all areas of mutual interest, including regional and global issues. He exchanged views on trade, investment and the welfare of the Pakistani diaspora.

Uzbekistan carries out fruitful work within the Commonwealth

Commentary of first deputy director of the Institute for strategic and regional studies under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the chairmanship of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the CIS in 2020

TASHKENT: On December 18 this year, under the chairmanship of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan it was held the Summit of the Heads of the Member States of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The summit was the final event during the chairmanship of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the CIS in 2020. The event was attended by the heads of state of Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan.

Evaluating the results of our country’s chairmanship in the CIS, we can say with confidence that despite the difficult epidemiological situation that complicated the work of many regional and international organizations, Uzbekistan has carried out very fruitful and effective work within the framework of the Commonwealth.

In accordance with the Concept of Uzbekistan’s chairmanship in the CIS, meetings of the Council of Heads of Government, the Council of Foreign Ministers, the Economic Council of the CIS, about 60 meetings of sectoral cooperation bodies, including the Council for Cooperation in Healthcare, the Council for Humanitarian Cooperation, were held. More than a thousand issues were considered, over 70 important multilateral documents were adopted.

In 2020, Uzbekistan joined three CIS bodies: the Council for Youth Affairs, the Advisory Council for Labor, Employment and Social Protection of the Population, the Advisory Council for the Protection of Consumer Rights, expanding in general the range of its interaction with the member states of the Commonwealth within the framework of 39 sectoral cooperation bodies.

However, clear evidence of the effectiveness of Uzbekistan’s chairmanship is the approval and adoption in the outgoing year a solid package of conceptual and strategic documents that form a basis for long-term and mutually beneficial cooperation within the CIS in such priority areas as politics, economy, security, culture, tourism, adapted to new realities, sports, youth policy, innovative development.

In particular, strategies for the development of cooperation in tourism, physical culture and sports, youth policy, an agreement on interaction in the field of digital development of societyadopted for 2021-2030, as well as the concept of military cooperation until 2025, are of current importance for sustainable development in the CIS space and interregional and cross-border cooperation until 2030.

The CIS Economic Development Strategy for the period up to 2030 deserves special attention. It is aimed at consistently building up mutually beneficial cooperation between the CIS member states in more than 30 areas of economic interaction, increasing the competitiveness of national economies and the welfare of citizens of the Commonwealth countries, strengthening the positions of its member states in world economic relations.

A significant contribution to the practical implementation of this strategy was the approval by the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth in May this year of the Priority Areas of Cooperation of the CIS member states in the field of transport for the period up to 2030.

This program document, initiated by the President of Uzbekistan Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, provides for a coordinated policy to form a common transport space and increase the competitiveness of transport corridors in the CIS countries, their integration into the European and Asian transport systems.

The most important achievement of the chairmanship of Uzbekistan in the CIS was the adoption of the Concept for the further development of the CIS.This document provides for the implementation of agreed measures to improve the organizational and legal mechanisms of cooperation in political, economic, humanitarian, cultural and other fields and the formation in the long term of an integrated economic and political association that ensures effective development each of its participants.

The value of the concept lies in the fact that it was developed based on the objective interests of the CIS member states in creating favorable conditions for the further development of national economies and ensuring security. It is also oriented to strengthening the well-being of citizens, involvement in world political, socio-cultural and economic processes, envisages the adaptation of structures, forms and methods of work of the CIS to new tasks of the dynamically developing world.

In addition, in the year of its chairmanship, Uzbekistan carried out purposeful work to agree and adopt the Program of Cooperation of the CIS Member States in Strengthening Border Security at External Borders for 2021-2025, as well as the Interstate Program for the Development of Innovative Cooperation of the CIS Member States until 2030, aimed at strengthening the innovative component of economic growth based on the development of interstate innovation space.

Coordinated and coherent work on the development and adoption of the above mentioned conceptual and program documents of medium and long-term nature once again confirms the common strategic interests and development goals of the CIS member states, their interest in further expanding and deepening equal, mutually beneficial and multifaceted cooperation on a wide range of issues.

In this regard, the initiatives of the President of Uzbekistan Sh.M. Mirziyoyev, voiced during the Summit of the Heads of the CIS Member States held on December 18, such as the adoption within the framework of the Commonwealth the “Roadmap” on the digitalization of trade, the Comprehensive program of industrial cooperation.Deradicalization program, the Program of Cooperation on Labor Migration, holding the CIS “Health Marathon” and othersare of particular relevance.

The implementation of these initiatives aimed at the practical implementation of the adopted strategic and conceptual documents will make it possible to take full advantage of the huge potential of the CIS member states, consolidate common efforts to ensure sustainable and progressive development in the Commonwealth space in the post-crisis period.

This, in turn, will confirm the viability of the Commonwealth as an effective mechanism of multilateral cooperation, its readiness to adapt to new realities, the common desire of the CIS member states to steadily improve the welfare, level and quality of life of the people of our countries.

In general, Uzbekistan, having stepped up its participation in the Commonwealth, once again declared its firm commitment to the development of multilateral cooperation. The high results achieved under the chairmanship of Uzbekistan in the CIS reveal the full support of the participating states in combining our country’s efforts to deepen practical partnership in all areas of political, economic and humanitarian cooperation, ensuring stability and sustainable development in the space of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Usman Mukhtar has a message for Pakistanis attending weddings

Pakistani actor Usman Mukhtar has reminded Pakistanis to practice social distancing every time they attend a wedding.

In an Instagram post that is guaranteed to grab anyone’s attention, the Sabaat actor said he sees people on social media dancing really close to each without caring about contracting the novel coronavirus.

“Care about yourself and if not yourself then the unsuspecting people around you who you’re going to give the virus to. This is life and death. Please be cautious,” he wrote.

Mukhtar himself contracted the virus in October and recovered in the first week of November.

Recently, Mukhtar’s short film Bench was screened at Cannes International Film Festival. The Embassy of Pakistan in France broke the news on Twitter.

The film won an award at the South Shore Film Festival in New York in July and was nominated before that in the best short film category at the Independent Short Awards festival in Los Angeles, USA.

Ishrat Hussain for diversifying exports

DNA

KARACHI: Advisor to Prime Minister on Institutional Reforms and Austerity Dr. Ishrat Hussain has stressed that Pakistan, instead of staying confined to exporting textiles only, needs to diversify its exports and move towards the sunrise industries for which the global demand is expanding in double digits otherwise we will remain stuck to US$25 to US$30 billion exports.

Speaking at the second session of webinar organized by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) to develop national consensus on economic agenda, Ishrat Hussain said, “If we can capture just 1 percent of Chinese market by providing components, raw materials, intermediate goods to Chinese supply chain, we can get $23 billion exports to China which is very favorably inclined towards Pakistan and they have allowed a lot of room through the FTA.”

“We are not taking advantage of the Chinese market which is so close to us and we are only focused on chasing the European Union and United States where rates of growth are either negative or 1 to 2 percent while China and Asia are growing by 5 to 6 percent and China has become the largest single exporter in the world”, he added.

PM’s Advisor further said, “We have to create incentive structure not only for five export-oriented sectors but also for any new sectors which are coming to start up the business and start up the new ventures and if they want to go for exports, we should try to provide them the financing, we should provide them tax rebates and we should give them the same treatment being given to five export-oriented sectors.”

“We have to diversify our incentive structure in order to encourage the new comers, new industries, new businesses and startups particularly in the IT sector which has huge potential”, he added.

He further pointed out that Pakistan has a very low investment and very low saving rate as 15 percent of investment can only result in 3 to 4 percent of growth rate but if the investment rate goes to 20 percent, the growth rate would improve to 5 percent. “We are a consumption led economy and no consumption led economy would ever be able to grow hence we have focus on savings and investment.”, he said while quoting the example of China where saving rates are 50 percent and investment rates are 45 percent and they are actually exporting capital to rest of the world including the United States.

He further stressed that the Pakistani industries must focus on improving their productively level which was very low as compared to other countries around the world and also a reason for high cost of doing business.

Dr. Ishrat Hussain said that Prime Minister was very keen to listen to and resolve the problems being faced by the business and industrial community so he has practically been meeting the business community almost every month.

Chairman BMG Zubair Motiwala, in his remarks, requested the government and political parties to please segregate politics and businesses that is the need of the hour. “Stop politicizing businesses as whenever the businesses are politicized, they don’t bring fruits to anywhere. The economies that have made remarkable progress, have actually done this by completely segregating politics and businesses.”

He was of the opinion that frequent changes in policies kill the economy hence, the business, taxation, industrial, trade policies must be kept intact at least for a period of five years.

He noted that Pakistan was going through a very critical time as the second wave of COVID-19, which was more deadly, has intensified the sufferings for the people while the businesses were also not doing well. However, the remittances have been improving and then the textile exports have also picked up pace while the performance of Large-Scale Industries has also picked up by 6.6 percent which were all positive signs but the upsurge in textile export may not last long so it was really essential to devise a proper plan of action in order to deal with the post-COVID situation when the demand was likely to go down by 35 to 40 percent.

He appreciated several measures taken by the government to minimize the impact of crises triggered by COVID-19 pandemic including the payment of stuck-up refund claims while the interest rates have also come down to 7 percent and a financing scheme at 2.5 to 3 percent was also introduced to minimize the hardships being faced by the business community.

“Consistency in policies and government’s support along with provision of an enabling and conducive atmosphere to investors are very necessary while the attitude of the bureaucracy also needs to be changed”, he stressed, adding that although good policies were introduced but implementation was not there because of the hurdles being created by the bureaucracy.

In this regard, he particularly mentioned that when it was decided that electricity to five zero-rated sectors including the textile sector will be given at 7.5 cents while the gas will be provided at $6.5 per mmbtu but the decision has not been implemented in Karachi to date despite assurances given by lawmakers from time to time.

Zubair Motiwala stressed that it was very necessary to bring down the cost of doing business otherwise Pakistani exporters will not be able to compete as the cost of doing business, gas & electricity tariffs and even the labor cost was the highest as compared to Bangladesh and some other countries.

He further pointed out that although the government gets 68 percent revenue from Karachi and 54 percent of the exports take place from this city but it was not getting anything in return. “There are no roads, no sewerage lines, no stormwater drainage system, no cleanliness, poor law and order situation and many other problems yet no attention was being paid to resolve Karachi’s most serious issues which has become a sick city now.”

He noted that the exports from Sialkot stood at 4.5 percent, Faisalabad exports were 18 percent while Lahore’s share stood at 22 percent and all these cities were receiving attention but Karachi, having the biggest share of 54 percent in the exports, was being ignored.

“We are thankful to Prime Minister for allocating Rs1 trillion for infrastructure development of Karachi but what happened to that Rs1 trillion, where it will be utilized, who are the partners, how the funds would be utilized and what would be the modus operandi”, he asked, adding that we really don’t know as we have not been taken on board regardless of the fact that it was the KCCI which sits at the pulse of Karachi’s economy and knows exactly where it hurts and where it can benefit.

Speaking on the occasion, President KCCI Shariq Vohra said, “KCCI wants all Chambers of Commerce to come onboard so that the we could collectively impress upon the parliamentarians and the policy makers to decide a broader level of Charter of Economy inside the parliament so that industrialists and businesses can have uninterrupted policies which would lead to industrial development domestically and attract foreign investment in Pakistan.”
