Sindh govt to file petition to block Omar Sheikh’s release

Sindh government will file an application to block the release of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the man previously convicted of kidnapping Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl and facilitating his murder.

Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab told the government will file an application against the Sindh High Court’s order for the release on Monday. “They are not likely to be released today because the court order will reach the prison and legal opinion will be sought on it,” he explained.

The court has ordered the release of Sheikh and struck down any further orders to detain him on Thursday. It was expected that he may be released from the Central Jail, Karachi today (Saturday).

The Sindh High Court issued a short order that the detention orders of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, Fahad Naseem, Sheikh Adil and Salman Saqib were null and void while hearing the Daniel Pearl murder case.

The men were detained after they were deemed free to go in April and were being kept at the Karachi Central Jail. However, their lawyers challenged them being further detained on the Sindh government orders. This is what the court struck down as being issued “without lawful authority”.

Mustafa Kamal held MQM responsible for Karachi problems

KARACHI, Dec 26 (DNA): Pak Sarzameen Party Chairman Mustafa Kamal
on Saturday slammed MQM decision to ask for public support and said that
enraged people with shoes in their hands are waiting for MQM which is
now asking for public consent after getting the controversial Census
2017 results approved by the federal cabinet as it ran its entire 2018
election campaign on the issue of 7 million missing people of Karachi in
the census, however when the time came to defend the rights of Karachi,
it deliberately let the federal cabinet approve the controversial census
results.

Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui’s name was mentioned by apprehended RAW agents
in their JIT that it was Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui who handed over Muhajir
youth to the Indian intelligence agency RAW for training.

MQM would never resign from the ministries as they would be arrested as
soon as they secede from the government, hence giving priority to its
ministries over the people of Karachi.

The census was held after a long span of 18 years, has been rejected by
every segment of life. The ID cards issued by NADRA with permanent
addresses of Karachi are over 25 million. The number of people in the
voter lists is high while the number in the census results is very low.

Every conscious person termed the controversial census an anti-Pakistan
move. “We ask those who holds the power reign of the country as to how
many more certificates of patriotism will the people of Karachi have to
present in order to consider them equal citizens? Why is Pakistan’s
political elite and rulers are afraid of Karachi that despite being the
economic lifeline of the country, Karachiites are forced to live third
class lives.”

Karachi is an ill-fated city having a global stature due to its
resources, potential and diversity but those who run Pakistan do not
even consider it as a part of Pakistan. The world chooses such cities
and makes them their capitals.

The status of federal capital was unjustly snatched away from Karachi
and a new city – Islamabad as federal capital was built from dust. When
the move did not bore the desired results, all the factories of the
people who migrated here after partition who brought money, trade,
education, health, business and industry were taken away by Bhutto
government overnight.

Those bureaucrats who were the basis of Pakistan’s prestige were
dismissed overnight after making them as OSDs, during the same period,
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto implemented a unjust quota system and unjustly
massacred merit and created a wall of invisible hatred between the the
two brothers of Sindh; the Muhajirs and the Sindhis.

The Sindhi brothers have suffered the most from the quota system. PSP
chief expressed these views while addressing a crowded press conference.
He further said that references were being leveled against the
opposition leaders but no reference are being taken up against Khalid
Maqbool Siddiqui, Aamir Khan and Wasim Akhtar as they are the allies of
the government.

The MQM kept crying for resources and authority instead of serving the
people, but kept mum when the local government powers were being taken
away by the PPP. They were allies of the PPP-led provincial government
and they themselves handed over the local government resources and
authority to the PPP.

During the last 13 years, water was stopped for Karachi, no government
bus was brought on the roads, medicines are running short in hospitals,
this is the extreme oppression against Karachi and all this oppression
was committed by the so-called representative party of this city while
it was in government.

The MQM, known for its strikes, has been protesting for Altaf Hussain’s
identity card, but has never staged a strike over local government, the
census or the rights of the people, Kamal said.

The fact is that the PPP knows that after 7 decades, the people of Sindh
got real freedom from the feudal lords due to migration to the cities.

Chief Justice of Pakistan has said that the population of Karachi is not
less than 30 million. If the population of Karachi, the capital of
Sindh, where all sub nationalities live, was counted correctly, the
people of Sindh would get their rights.

Standing in Hyderabad, the provincial education minister says he will
not allow the university to be built. The MQM saved its life by
submitting a dissenting note to throw dust in the eyes of the people. It
should have immediately separated way from this weakest government.

PSP will never accept this controversial census. We demand that the
federal cabinet should reverse this decision immediately. Like all the
other u turns, Kamal advised the Prime Minister to take one more u turn
on the matter of census too.

Kamal said PSP might take extreme measures in this regard. Our protest
will include Sindhis, Muhajirs, Balochs and Pakhtuns as census is a
matter of survival of Pakistan, if our lawful demand was not accepted
this time, it means we are not considered Pakistani even today.

Kamal said the people want the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take a suo
moto on this issue. Please just check the record of NADRA, the problem
will be solved, PSP chief concluded.

Pakistan’s economic performance remains encouraging despite challenges

Despite challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic, Pakistan’s economic performance remained encouraging in December, according to the Economic and Outlook report, which the government’s Finance Division publishes every month.

The report said remittances, the current account balance, foreign exchange reserves and stock exchange (index) have improved significantly.

Inflation is projected to stay in the range of 7.8% to 8.3% this month.

The economy is recovering from a balance of payments crisis due to the ongoing pandemic.

The report added that an increase in industrial production, tax revenue and foreign direct investment has been observed.

US doctor with shellfish allergy has reaction to Moderna vaccine

A doctor in Boston was the first to experience an allergic reaction to Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, reported The New York Times  on Friday. He has since recovered.

This is the first reported allergic reaction to the Moderna vaccine in the world. The mRNA-based vaccine was rolled out across the US this week. It is the second one approved in the US; the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has already been administered to more than a million people.

There have also been cases of allergic reaction reported after the Pfizer vaccine was given, which are being investigated by health authorities.

The Moderna case was recorded in a geriatric oncologist, Dr Hossein Sadrzadeh, at Boston Medical Center. He had a severe reaction almost immediately after being vaccinated.

“After I got the vaccine, I felt tachycardic, but I felt like it was probably anxiety because I was scared after learning about Pfizer’s reactions in the US, especially with those people who have shellfish allergies, like me,” said Dr Sadrzadeh.

He added: “My heart rate was 150, my normal heart rate is 75 but…six, seven minutes after the injection of the vaccine, I felt in my tongue and also my throat having, like, some weird sensation of tingling and numbness, the same reaction that I had before to my shellfish allergy. ”

He used his EpiPen when his blood pressure dropped, after which he was rushed to the emergency room.

Spokesperson for Boston Medical Center David Kibbe said Dr Sadrzadeh “was taken to the Emergency Department, evaluated, treated, observed and discharged. He is doing well today.”

Moderna has not yet commented on the incident. The US Food and Drug Administration has not issued a statement either.

Earlier, the Centres for Disease Control had released guidelines about both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and allergic reactions:

“Severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any component of the vaccine is a contraindication to vaccination for both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.

“Anaphylactic reactions in persons who received Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine outside of clinical trials have been reported. While these reports are further investigated, CDC considers a history of severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other vaccine or injectable therapy (e.g., intramuscular, intravenous, or subcutaneous) as a precaution, but not a contraindication to vaccination for both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines (as these vaccines contain ingredients in common).”

People with allergies can still get the vaccine after counselling and weighing the costs and benefits, the CDC advised.

Opposition’s criticism similar to Indian propaganda, says PM Imran in Chakwal

CHAKWAL – Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said that the language being used by the opposition was similar to the propaganda being peddled by India to discredit Pakistan as a nation.

Addressing an event in Chakwal, where the premier laid the foundation stone for several development projects earlier today, he said: “The way the political opposition of Pakistan has attacked the Pakistan Army, this has never happened before in our history.”

“Former military dictator General Pervez Musharraf used to be criticised, but he was political […] the criticism being dealt out these days, I am sorry to say, is using the language that India’s propaganda machine uses against the Pakistan Army.”

Commenting on a recent report by the Brussels-based EU DisinfoLab regarding an Indian disinformation network operating since 2005 to discredit nations in conflict with Delhi, particularly Pakistan, the premier said: “The purpose of this was to present Pakistan in a negative light in front of the world and to portray that there is chaos so that no one invests in the country.

“The Pakistan Army was also targeted […] India wants the army to be portrayed as a rogue army and as terrorists.”

He stated that it was also discovered that the fake sites unearthed in the investigation were also promoting the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an alliance of 11 political parties.

“This is the first time that Pakistan’s opposition has targeted the Pakistan Army in this way. There is no prior example of this.”

He also rubbished the claims of the opposition that the establishment played a part in the 2018 elections. “If the election was rigged, did you go to to the Election Commission of Pakistan or the Supreme Court? Did you take this up in Parliament? Did you say at any forum that the election was rigged?”

The prime minister said that the “whole nation knew” that the leaders of opposition parties had looted the country for the past 30 years.

“There are articles published on them abroad. BBC has made two documentaries about [Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari] and their corruption. You can see on TV what they used to say about each other […] they used to call the other corrupt.”

He said that the opposition, in an effort to save its ill-gotten gains, was attacking a national institution which is needed now more than ever as “never before has there been such a government in India in the history of the subcontinent”.

“A government that is extremist, totalitarian, racist, anti-Muslim, anti-Islam and anti-Pakistan,” he said.

He added that India was carrying out terrorism in Balochistan and the country’s merged areas in an effort to spread anarchy. “Our jawans are sacrificing their lives. I have never seen an opposition trying to undermine its country like this just to get an NRO.”

He added that if any government gives an NRO to the opposition, it will be tantamount to treason.

“Gen Musharraf gave an NRO two these two [Nawaz and Zardari] and our loans multiplied by four times in the span of 10 years.”

He stated that when the PTI took over governance, half of the money collected under taxes was spent on paying debt installments. He added that the debt increased in the second year of governance due to interest.

“Therefore, we don’t have as much money to spend on the people. This is what happens when corrupt people come into power. They destroy the whole system from the top to the bottom.”

Explaining the difference between kingship and a democracy, the premier said that true democracy holds its leaders accountable.

“Look at the children of these leaders that are carrying out rallies for an NRO,” he said in an apparent reference to Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Maryam Nawaz. “Someone should ask them what their qualifications are. What is the reason that you are the heads of your respective parties? What have you achieved?”

“For even a small job, they ask you what your experience is. You can’t get a job without it. If someone asks them what their job experience is they’ll say that their fathers are the most corrupt men in Pakistan.

“This is their qualification. They haven’t worked for an hour in their life and are here to run a country.”

‘No progress without education’

Changing gears, the premier said that no country can progress without educating its people, “This doesn’t even happen in fairy tales.”

Education doesn’t have immediate returns, he said. The way our democracy has evolved, we think of tangible projects that allow us to win the next election, he said. “A government which thinks about the next generation prioritises education.”

He said that Pakistan had the second youngest population in the world. “The more value we can add to this segment of the population, if we equip them with the necessary skills, then the country will leap forward.”

He predicted that the two projects he inaugurated today — namely Chakwal University and the Centre of Excellence — would produce great talent if attention is paid on recruiting quality teachers.

He added that the 500-bed hospital, that was among the projects he laid the foundation stone for, was also a necessary project. “I again reiterate that we will support you. But the government can’t make all the hospitals that the country requires.”

He said that the health cards introduced by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab will help to upgrade the country’s healthcare system, adding that the government was facilitating private hospitals so that they can establish facilities.

Vision for Pakistan

He said that when people ask him about what he sees for the country at the end of his term, he envisions an end to the country’s debts and fiscal deficit so that Pakistan can stand on its own two feet.

“Our current account has been in surplus for the past five months. This has happened for the first time in 17 years. Our next major push has to be on the country’s fiscal deficit.”

He said that if the government did not have to pay the loans taken by former rulers, it would have managed to balance Pakistan’s income and expenditures.

“We are concentrating on increasing income and wealth creation. I fully believe that when our five years are up, we’ll have lessened the burdened of loans,” he said, adding that the government was also focusing on improving the life of the common man.

PM Imran also said that a new programme will be introduced to ensure that “no one sleeps hungry”. “The programme will take concrete steps to ensure that no one goes to sleep on an empty stomach in Pakistan,” he said.

Pakistan cup gets Australia fast bowler boost

LAHORE, Dec 26 (DNA): Australia’s 24-year-old Aaron Summers is all set
to become the first foreign player to feature in the revamped Pakistan’s
domestic cricket by signing up for Southern Punjab for the Pakistan Cup
One-Day Tournament, which begins in Karachi from 8 January.

The PCB’s domestic competition rules allow one foreign player per side
as long as the foreign player submits a Non-Objective Certificate from
his home board.

The Tasmanian will arrive in Lahore on 28 December and after a week-long
training camp under Azhar Mahmood at the National High Performance
Centre, will join Southern Punjab in Karachi on 5 January. Apart from
Summers, Azhar, who has also been looped in for a short-term contract by
Southern Punjab, will also work on Taimoor Bhatti, a 22-year-old rookie
fast bowler from Rahim Yar Khan, who is yet to get a domestic exposure.

Summers, featured for Karachi Kings in the HBL Pakistan Super League
2019 and has also played for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.
On his debut match for the Hurricanes in December 2017, he had outpaced
Jofra Archer and Tymal Mills to earn the reputation of one of the
fastest bowlers on the Australian circuit.

Aaron Summers: “I am delighted to have been offered a contract by the
Southern Punjab Cricket Association, which has proved to be one of the
front-running and formidable sides in Pakistan’s domestic cricket.

“Pakistan is a breeding ground for the fast bowlers and while I look
forward to developing as a quality fast bowler, I am equally keen to
help my side performance strongly in the Pakistan Cup, which will be
played on double-league format that will test my fitness, form and
consistency against some of quality batsmen to the limits.

“I have been following the ongoing season on social media and the
quality of cricket on display has convinced me that Pakistan is the
place where I can hone my skills and improve as a cricketer. My goal
remains to be a top professional and I think Pakistan can help me
achieve that target.”

Director – High Performance, Nadeem Khan: “The news of Aaron Summers
featuring in the Pakistan Cup is a validation of the standard and
competitive quality of our domestic events.

“We are aspiring to make our domestic structure robust, tough and
challenging that can not only benefit our cricketers but also attract
foreign cricketers – just like our cricketers who are regularly
featuring in Australia and England’s domestic circuit.

“I am hopeful Aaron’s participation will also attract other foreign
cricketers. It will also help our local players interact and integrate
with players from other environments and enhance their understating of
different cultures.” DNA

Holding early senate election not in hands of govt: Akhtar Mengal

SEHWAN, Dec 26 (DNA): Balochistan National Party (BNP) chief Akhtar
Mengal has said that holding early Senate election is not in the hands
of the government. Conducting Senate elections is the responsibility of
the Election Commission of Pakistan, not the Prime Minister.

Talking to media, Akhtar Mengal said that General Secretary of
Functional League Muhammad Ali Durrani was sent by the government to
meet Mian Shehbaz Sharif and it is the will of the government to allow
prisoners to meet someone or not.

Continuing, he said that there were no rifts in the ranks of the PDM and
there were no differences. Maulana Fazlur Rehman will not attend
tomorrow s meeting due to his busy schedule.

The BNP chief further said that the way the PDM is making decisions
means we are succeeding. I think the future of the government is dark.
The PDM leadership will work together on Senate elections, he added.

He said that members of the Provincial and National Assemblies of all
PDM parties have submitted their resignations to their respective
parties.

Akhtar Mengal said that after the resignations, the PDM leadership will
decide when those resignations should be submitted to the assemblies.

He said the government has been using tactics since day one to end the
movement. Holding early Senate elections is not in the hands of the
government. Senate elections are to be held by the Election Commission
and not by the Prime Minister.

Akhtar Mengal said that the rulers and their allies will continue to
play. Senate elections will be held on time. He said that inflation in
the country has made the lives of the poor miserable. DNA

Mohammad Yousuf reveals secret of Babar Azam’s rise to fame

Former batsman Mohammad Yousuf believes that Pakistan skipper Babar Azam gained popularity with his performances in Test cricket.

The right-handed batsman, who is ranked at fifth position in International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings, has scored 2045 runs from 29 games at an average of 45.33. He has scored five centuries and 10 half-centuries in the longest format.

Yousuf, in an interview with Cricket Pakistan, stated that his performances in the five-day format have been appreciated more than the limited-overs format.

“I don’t think it is difficult for professionals to shift from T20 to Test cricket,” he said. “Only the kit changes, the ground, players and cricket in general is the same. I will admit that Test cricket is a little difficult but a player can make a name for myself by playing good cricket. The general public might not properly appreciate the Test performances but people who know cricket are aware of its value. Just look at the example of Babar Azam, he came into the limelight through his performances in Test cricket.”

“I think Nasser Hussain in England and Australian players as well might have praised him for his performance in Test cricket, not T20Is,” the 46-year-old said.

The 26-year-old was ruled out from the recently concluded three-match T20I series against New Zealand and the ongoing first Test at Tauranga’s Mount Maunganui.

His return to the side for the second and final game, which will be played in Christchurch on January 3, is doubtful.
