Art from rare Tintin comic book set to sell for millions

The 1936 work in Chinese ink, gouache and watercolor, was destined as a cover for The Blue Lotus, the fifth volume of the Belgian journalist’s adventures.

Not even the coronavirus can get in the way of intrepid Belgian reporter and comic book legend Tintin.

Comic book lovers and tourists alike can catch a socially distanced glimpse of a Tintin drawing by Herge in Paris before it goes under the hammer Thursday, estimated to sell between $2.4 to $3.6 million and possibly break the record for the most expensive comic book art in history.

The 1936 work in Chinese ink, gouache and watercolor, was destined as a cover for The Blue Lotus, the fifth volume of the Belgian journalist’s adventures. But it never sat on any book store shelves because it was rejected for being too expensive to reproduce on a wide scale – a victim of its own rare craftsmanship.

“They had to do a four color process printing, with an additional color. [But the publisher] thought that the comic albums were already expensive. Reproducing this cover art would increase the production costs,” said comics expert Eric Leroy at the Artcurial auction house by the Champs-Elysees avenue.

As the name Blue Lotus suggests, the art work places Tintin in Asia. A huge red dragon appears on a black background by the Belgian reporter’s petrified face. It is a prized addition to the universe of Tintin, the subject of recent shows in London and Barcelona, a 2011 Hollywood adaptation, a videogame and an app.

In Blue Lotus, Tintin travels to China during the 1931 Japanese invasion to investigate and expose – along with his dog Snowy – Japanese spy networks, drug-smuggling rings and other crimes.

But the huge interest in this work has raised a host of questions among French media regarding the work’s provenance – whether it was a gift to the son of Tintin’s printer or a drawing simply never returned to the artist.

There is no question, however, of its authenticity. On Thursday, Hergé, whose real name was Georges Remi, could break the record for the most expensive piece of comic book art at 2.6 million euros that was previously set by himself.

“We set the previous record for the ‘Pages de Garde’ in 2014 … it would be fair for this piece to break this record. Hergé had done only five comic covers using this technique of direct color so it’s very rare,” Leroy said.

Azerbaijan’s win brings new opportunities for peace in region – Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Azerbaijan’s victory in Upper Karabakh has brought new opportunities for peace and stability in the region.

He said this while speaking to his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev over the phone, the Turkish Directorate of Communications said in a statement.

Underlining that Turkey’s support and cooperation will continue in all areas, he expressed pleasure over the start of repair and construction activities in Upper Karabakh, which was liberated by Azerbaijan from the occupation of Armenia.

Relations between the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been tense since 1991 when the Armenian military occupied Upper Karabakh, also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, internationally recognised as Azerbaijani territory, and seven adjacent regions.

Six-week-long conflict

When new clashes erupted September 27, 2020, Armenia launched attacks on civilians and Azerbaijani forces and even violated humanitarian ceasefire agreements.

During the six-week-long conflict, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages, while at least 2,802 of its soldiers were killed.

There are differing claims about the number of casualties on the Armenian side, which, sources and officials say, could be as high as 5,000.

The two countries signed a Russian-brokered agreement on November 10, 2020, to end fighting and work toward a comprehensive resolution.

A joint Turkish-Russian centre is being established to monitor the truce. Russian peacekeeping troops have also been deployed in the region.

The ceasefire is seen as a victory for Azerbaijan and a defeat for Armenia, whose armed forces have withdrawn in line with the agreement.

Violations, however, have been reported in recent weeks, with Armenian soldiers reportedly hiding in the mountainous enclave.

Google clinches deal to buy Fitbit amid inquiry

WASHINGTON: Search and advertising giant Google has closed its deal to buy fitness tracking company Fitbit, the companies said on Thursday, even as the US Justice Department said it was continuing its probe of the $2.1 billion transaction.

The Justice Department, which sued Alphabet’s Google in October for allegedly violating antitrust law in its search and search advertising businesses, said it “has not reached a final decision about whether to pursue an enforcement action” regarding the Fitbit deal. “We complied with the DOJ’s (Justice Department’s) extensive review for the past 14 months, and the agreed upon waiting period expired without their objection,” a Google spokesperson said.

“We continue to be in touch with them and were committed to answering any additional questions.”

It is rare for a big deal to close without anti-trust approval. Australia has also not yet approved the transaction. Google won EU anti-trust approval last month for its Fitbit bid after agreeing to restrictions on how it will use customers’ health-related data.

Fitbit makes a watch-like device to measure physical activity that competes with Apple Watch and others. Google said it was buying the company in order to compete in this market.

Nepalese team make history, become first to ascent K2 in winter

A team of Nepalese climbers on Saturday made history after becoming the first to summit K2 in winter, according to a trekking company leading one of the expeditions.

Dozens of mountaineers have been competing over the past few weeks to summit the world’s second highest mountain, the last peak above 8,000 metres to be topped in wintertime.

According to Radio Pakistan, the team was led by Chhang Dawa Sherpa.

“We did it,” said Seven Summit Treks, the trekking company which led the ascent, in a statement on Twitter.

“The Karakoram’s ‘savage mountain’ [has] been summited in [the] most dangerous season: winter. Nepalese climbers finally reached the summit of K2 this afternoon at 5pm.

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Chief Minister Mohammad Khalid Khursheed Khan, while talking to media, also congratulated the team on their K2 ascent and expressed his hopes that GB mountaineer Mohammad Ali Sadpara and his son Sajid Ali Sadpara, among others, would reach Camp 3 soon.

He further said he wished for the continued success of the country’s mountaineers.

Since the maiden attempt in 1987-1988, just a handful of winter expeditions have been attempted on the storied 8,611-metre mountain in the Karakoram range along the Chinese border.

None had gotten higher than 7,650 metres until Saturday when good conditions allowed the climbers to push ahead.

This winter an unprecedented four teams totalling around 60 climbers converged on the mountain, more than all the previous expeditions put together.

The 10 Nepalese climbers had earlier been spread across the different teams, but formed a new group in order to claim the feat in Nepal’s name.

Known as the ‘savage mountain’, winds on the peak can blow at more than 200 kilometres per hour and temperatures can drop to minus 60 degrees Celsius.

Merkel ally wins race to lead her party

BERLIN – German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative CDU party on Saturday picked her ally Armin Laschet as its next leader, in a vote that kicks off the race for the country’s top job as a deadly pandemic roils Europe’s biggest economy.

In the close race, Laschet, the state premier of Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, triumphed over old Merkel nemesis Friedrich Merz, after a first round that saw Merz leading by just five votes.

A third hopeful, foreign affairs expert Norbert Roettgen, was knocked out of the race.

Merz had campaigned on a promise to shift away from Merkel’s centrist path and steer right, writing in a column for Der Spiegel that a “happy ‘carry on like this’ is just as inappropriate as the vague claim to occupy the centre at all times”.

In contrast, Laschet pledged to continue with Merkel’s more moderate course.

In a speech minutes before the vote on Saturday, Laschet called for “continuity” and highlighted the challenge of retaining CDU voters without Merkel at the top.

“What we need is continuity of success,” he said, in a direct rejection of Merz’s vision.

Merz, meanwhile, attempted to address his low levels of support among women in the party by highlighting his good relationship with his wife and daughter — leading to some panning on social media.

“Sure, every heterosexual husband and father is virtually a women’s rights movement in their own right,” one Twitter user wrote.

At the opening on Friday of the two-day congress which had been forced online by the pandemic, Merkel had signalled her opposition of Merz as she urged delegates to stay the centrist course.

“As a people’s party of the centre, we naturally seek solutions that balance out conflicts and always promote […] social cohesion,” she said.

“This has always distinguished us as a governing party,” added Merkel.

Merkel backs ‘team’

Giving a further hint of her choice, Merkel said she hoped that “a team will be elected that will take the fate of our proud party in its hands”.

While she did not name names, the call appeared to indicate support for Laschet, who has campaigned on a joint ticket with Health Minister Jens Spahn as his deputy.

Merkel had previously said that Laschet “has the tools” to be chancellor.

Merkel, 66, elected as Germany’s youngest and first female chancellor in 2005, is planning to stand down after four terms and 16 years in the job following a general election in September.

She had already given up the party’s chairman job in 2018 but her preferred successor Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was forced to step down over her handling of a regional election scandal.

The head of the CDU traditionally leads the party and its Bavarian sister party CSU into a general election as its chancellor candidate, meaning Laschet, would be in with a good chance of securing the top job.

But the pandemic has reshuffled the cards, and many voices are calling instead for the conservative alliance to field someone else as its chancellor candidate.

Chancellor candidate

Most popular at the moment is CSU leader and Bavarian state premier Markus Soeder, whose robust response to the pandemic has won him widespread praise and given him a national spotlight.

Another contender could be Spahn, who has reportedly been sounding out his chances behind the scenes.

The final race at Merkel’s conservative alliance for Germany’s top job is therefore far from over ahead of the September 26 elections.

Merkel helped Germany weather storms including the global financial crisis and eurozone turmoil as she shifted her CDU firmly to the political centre.

Support for the chancellor plummeted after Germany kept open its borders in 2015 to a mass influx of refugees, dividing society and leading to the rise of the far right.

But in the twilight of her reign, Merkel’s popularity has soared again thanks to her handling of the coronavirus pandemic, making it increasingly difficult for Germans to imagine political life without her.

Significance of Pak-Turk-Azerbaijan 2nd Trilateral Meeting

Muntaha Talat

Research Associate, Islamabad Institute of Conflict Resolution, IICR

In today’s dynamic world, where political, economic, and social scenarios change every minute, countries have to signify their relations with the other countries. Therefore, a nation’s foreign policy is inevitably the prime aspect to look at. On January 13th, the globe witnessed an emerging partnership among the three countries;  Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. This 2nd trilateral meeting was a continuation of efforts to strengthen the three-tier relations at the trade and economic, technological, cultural, peace and security, and political fronts.

Hosted by Islamabad, this was the second meeting preceding the first one held in Baku back in November 2017. This trilateral meeting resulted in the foreign ministers of the respective states signing an agreement titled “Islamabad Declaration”. Afterward, the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov addressed a joint press conference and expressed their remarks. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi thanked his counterparts for their visit to Pakistan and said that we had reaffirmed our determination and support for each other’s issues that envelop our core national interests.

In the current international relations’ scenario, this meeting had a significant impact as the world has its eyes on this emerging partnership in the Middle East. Since Turkey was the first state to recognize Azerbaijan, followed by Pakistan when it became independent after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1992, these three countries have established strong relations at diplomatic, defense, and military scale. With Azerbaijan having its conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, Turkey and Pakistan have always supported Azerbaijan. At the same time, Pakistan is the only state that hasn’t recognized Armenia yet. And for Pakistan, Azerbaijan has always second the stance of Pakistan over the Kashmir issue. Pakistan and  Azerbaijan share a similar history, and they also have similar cultural, geopolitical, and religious outlooks. The countries invest in each other’s interests as the Baku state university teaches its students the Urdu language, and Pakistan has launched an online Azerbaijani News agency. This bilateral relation brings an advantage for Azerbaijan so that Pakistan can pave the way for her to be a part of several regional bodies. Azerbaijan has raised the Kashmir issue that is particularly important for the current government.

Islamabad’s growing support through this relation concerns both India and Armenia, as Armenia defends Indian’s stance on the Kashmir issue. Moreover, India and Armenia are working to strengthen their relationship and signed a $40 million deal back in March 2020. To counter the Pak-Turk-Azerbaijan axis, India and Armenia are working to enhance their strategic and military relations.

As far as Pak-Turk relations are concerned, we all have been seeing Turkey’s undeterred support for Islamabad at FATF as she was the sole voter for Pakistan to exit the Grey List and enter the white list. Adding to that, both the countries enjoy friendly relations as PM Imran Khan visited Turkey, and then Tayib Erdogan came to Pakistan. Both countries have agreed to collaborate on enhancing trade, economic, and military relations and other issues. Moreover, the Turkish ambassador stayed in Muzaffarabad, Kashmir, to show that Turkey stands with Pakistan on the Kashmir cause.

Pakistan’s foreign policy has been profoundly successful under the leadership of Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Pakistan is taking initiatives at the foreign front to improve its international relations and efforts for better trade and economic activities. It’s the result of these whole-hearted endeavors that the world is now accepting Pakistan as a progressive state. However, this trilateral meeting will leave a noticeable impact on the dynamics of the region. The signed agreement is proof that ese three states’ relation will explore new horizons on the road to success and prosperity.
