Govt should immediately revoke SRO 237: President ICCI

ISLAMABAD, JAN 25 (DNA) – The importers of halal products in a meeting with Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry have expressed their great concern on the issuance of SRO 237 by the Ministry of Commerce & Textile.

They said that as per the said SRO importers will have to comply with the strict conditions while importing halal food products including ingredients and details of the products of the food products should be printed in Urdu and English language on the consumer packaging, the Logo of the halal certification body should be printed on the consumer packaging, and the labeling should not be in the form of a sticker, overprinting stamp or scratched labeling.

The delegation said that the majority of the halal food products are small importers and it was not possible for them to comply with such strict conditions especially writing details of ingredients and products in Urdu and printing of Logo of Halal Certification body on the packaging.

They said that most of the small importers buy halal food products from the wholesale markets around the globe as they don’t have direct access to the producers that makes it extremely difficult for them to fulfill conditions that were mentioned in the said SRO. They said that import volume of halal products was normally very low and factories do not offer services of customized labelling in case of small orders.

Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan said that ICCI has been pursuing this matter almost for the last two years but still there was no positive response from the Government. He said that the inflation has gone beyond the means and it was not affordable for the consumers to buy imported Halal food products at high price. He said that it has also become difficult for the importers to continue their businesses with the current policy because in the present covid-19 situation business community has suffered huge financial losses.

Sardar Yasir Ilyas urged the Ministry to consider the request for revoking the SRO 237 on immediate basis in order to avoid further closure of business or going them in default. He said that imposition of such conditions would make it difficult for the small importers of halal food products to comply with the condition of printing details of the products in Urdu language. He said that the government should ease out conditions and allow importers to paste information on the packing in Urdu in the form of stickers.

He further said that Halal Certificate should be accepted and the condition of printing of Halal Logo on the consumer packing should be removed. He said that such conditions which are being imposed through the said SRO would curtail the imports and also increase the price of imported halal food products.=DNA

Threat to Indian constitution is real, say experts

NEW DELHI, JAN 25 – As India prepares to celebrate Jan. 26, the 72nd year of implementation of its Constitution, experts said the reason behind its success and longevity in a pluralistic country has been its secular nature.

But with the vision to turn the country into a Hindu nation, the stable structure of secularism is at risk, they claimed.

Prashant Bhushan, a public interest lawyer and constitutional expert, told Anadolu Agency that efforts to dismantle India’s republic are causing a real threat to the Constitution.

“To be able to protect fundamental rights of the citizens of India, we need to have a strong democracy. With the attacks getting real on the secularity and freedom of rights in the current regime, the threats to the Constitution are serious and insidious,” said Bhushan, who faced contempt proceedings for tweeting his opinions.

He said that with an exponential rise in vigilante groups attacking freedom of speech and the state using sedition laws against dissent, the evil in the government is personified.

“With the introduction of laws like love-jihad and anti-conversion law, the Muslims in the country are being reduced to second class citizens. If this under the will to turn India into a ‘Hindu-nation’ continues, it will pose greater threats to the secularism and in-turn Constitution,” he said.

Some state governments in India recently introduced a controversial bill to curb so-called “Love Jihad” — a term used by right-wing Hindu groups alleging that Muslim men target Hindu women for conversion to Islam by pretending that they love them.

In recent years, law enforcement agencies have increasingly used the colonial law of sedition to curb intellectual dissidence. Enacted in 1837, it was originally meant to prevent incitement against the British monarch.

Legal experts said it emerged as a lethal tool in the hands of police to book dissenters.

It is a non-bailable offense and has life imprisonment as maximum punishment. Mahatma Gandhi was charged with sedition by British officials and tried in 1922.

According to the data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of registered sedition cases doubled from 35 in 2016 to 75 in 2018. Of these, only one was convicted in 2016 and two in 2018.

Between 2019 and the first three months of 2020, when the country protested anti-citizenship laws, more than 3,000 Indians were charged with sedition.

Bhushan said that while the threats rise out of the subverted, if taken too far, the resilience of Indian citizens will help the country survive.

Constitution’s success and longevity

While constitutions around the world that were adopted about the same time as India have been abrogated or floundered, the Indian Constitution has survived the test of time.

Subhash C. Kashyap, former head of the inter-parliamentarian union at Geneva and a political scientist, said the Constitution remained successful because of its spirit of adjustment, compromise and interest toward sensibilities of all sections of people.

“The constitution-makers worked very hard to prepare a draft which would bring together a fragmented, diverse society and will be acceptable in the length and breadth of the country. Even till today, it is the greatest national integration force,” Kashyap told Anadolu Agency.

He said that while 104 amendments have been made to the Constitution, all have been in accordance with the Constitution.

Kashyap pointed out that how the Constitution affects citizens will depend on those who work it, their honesty and capability.

“If the Constitution is targeted, what is wrong is with the people working it and their integrity. Men of integrity will revert even the bad to good. A lot depends on the political behaviors and understanding of the constitution,” he said.

Kashyap added that electoral reforms are required for the success of the Constitution.

Just like, Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the father of the Constitution warned years ago: “It is perfectly possible to pervert the Constitution, without changing the form by merely changing the form of administration and to make it inconsistent and opposed to the spirit of the constitution.”

Republic day celebrations and the importance

India was a colony of the British for more than 200 years until it freed itself in 1947, following a long independence movement. Despite independence, the country continued to follow British laws set in 1935 under the “Government of India Act” until 1950 when India became a sovereign republic.

The Constitution of India, drafted by a committee headed by Ambedkar, was adopted Nov. 26, 1949, by the Indian Constituent Assembly and came into effect Jan. 26, 1950, with a democratic government system.

Each year since, a magnificent parade constituting a march by military forces and a display of the latest defense equipment and weapon systems is conducted at the Rajpath – a ceremonial boulevard across Parliament House and India Gate.

This year, however, the parade will be subdued because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and protests from Indian farmers to revert the newly introduced farm laws, on the borders of New Delhi.

The “overall traditional character” of the parade, which showcases the country’s military might and cultural diversity, “will, however, be maintained” despite restrictions necessitated by the pandemic, confirmed officials.

PROFILE – World-class player at Fenerbahce: Mesut Ozil

ANKARA, JAN 25 – Fenerbahce’s winter signing from English football club Arsenal, Mesut Ozil, has been drawing attention with his stellar performance for his previous clubs and German national team.

Born on Oct. 15, 1988, in Gelsenkirchen, Ozil played for Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen while he was in Germany.

In 2010, he left Werder Bremen to join Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid for a nearly €15 million ($19 million) transfer fee.

Ozil was 21 when he was signed by Real Madrid. It was his first overseas experience.

The 32-year-old attacking midfielder is a German national but has Turkish roots.

Ozil preferred to play for his native Germany as he made his debut for “Die Mannschaft” in 2009, a year before the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

He became one of the integral parts of Real Madrid to win the 2011 Spanish Cup, 2012 Spanish La Liga title, and 2012 Spanish Super Cup.

During his Real Madrid days, Ozil played alongside Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former Germany regular scored 27 goals and produced 80 assists in 159 appearances for Real Madrid.

In 2013, Arsenal signed him for a club-record £42.4 million transfer fee or $51.7 million. Ozil is still among the record arrivals of the London club.

Nicolas Pepe is Arsenal’s all-time most expensive signing as the former Lille winger from Ivory Coast was transferred for £72 million in 2019.

In his seven-and-a-half-year spell at Arsenal, Ozil tallied 44 goals and 77 assists in 254 matches.

Ozil helped Arsenal win four English FA Cup trophies.

After the longtime Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s leave from the club in 2018, Ozil’s career started to decline.

This season he has been left out of Arsenal’s English Premier League and UEFA Europa League squad.

Ozil last played for Arsenal in March 2020.

On Sunday, Fenerbahce confirmed the signing of Ozil from Arsenal on a free transfer.

Ozil quit German national team in 2018

In his first World Cup finals with Germany in 2010, Ozil was awarded a bronze medal in South Africa.

Ozil became one of the key players for the German national team, helping his nation win the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Following the 2014 triumph, Germany’s shocking group-stage elimination at the 2018 World Cup in Russia sparked more criticism of the team and Ozil.

Ozil came under fire in Germany when he posted a photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before the 2018 World Cup.

Erdogan was in London in May 2018 for a state visit to the UK.

Ozil’s photo with Erdogan ahead of the 2018 Turkish elections caused anger in Germany.

After his photos with the Turkish leader, German media outlets slammed Ozil, questioning his loyalty to Germany.

Fellow German international Ilkay Gundogan, born in Germany to Turkish parents, was also present at the London meeting with Erdogan, as well as striker Cenk Tosun of Everton, who was born in Germany but plays for the Turkish national team.

The Germans’ criticism against Ozil worsened after the national team’s fiasco in Russia.

In 2018, Ozil quit the German national team, citing “racism and disrespect.”

Ozil slams China’s persecution of Uighurs

The former Arsenal star perpetually raised awareness on social media, slamming the ongoing Chinese oppression of Uighurs, a Turkic Muslim group in the Asian country.

China is accused of carrying out repressive policies against the Uighur, a Turkic Muslim group, and restraining their religious, commercial, and cultural rights.

In a tweet he posted in Dec. 2019, Ozil criticized inaction over what he called the Chinese persecution of Uighurs in Xinjiang.

He wrote: “Qurans are burned… Mosques were closed down… Islamic theological schools, Madrasahs were banned … Religious scholars were killed one by one … Despite all this, Muslims stay quiet.”

China’s Xinjiang region — also known as East Turkestan — is home to over 10 million Uighurs.

The Turkic Muslim group, which makes up around 45% of Xinjiang’s population, has long accused Chinese authorities of cultural, religious, and economic discrimination.

Unemployment a Dark Shadow encircling our Graduates

Munaza Kazmi

Our educational institutions turn out university graduate’s year- in- year out, the labor market which is expected to absorb theses graduates puts on the toga of inelasticity. Therefore, the labor market seems saturated. New jobs were either not being created or created in error, neither were the current jobs restructured nor reengineered and this has brought about a strong negative and dark impact on national economy, as well as the standard of living of the community. Hence, the issue of graduate unemployment can take many ugly forms.

The unemployed graduatesappear to experience shame, hardship and frustration. Apart from the fact that the unemployed graduates are deprived of earning salary, they are equally deprived of socialization effect of work and removed from social ties and relationship.

Consequently, they are put in a situation of worklessness, dispossessed and having no income value in the society. Moreover, they are unhappy with themselves in the world of material consideration. Since, the one who’s unemployed is not socially recognized and this make some friends and relatives to look- down on them as liabilities in the society. This makes the unemployed graduates to exhibit a kind of non- conforming and negative social vices, that can have much darker effect not only on individual level but on national level.

It hasbeen observed that unemployment has a negative effect on the unemployed, such as low self-esteem, frustration and depression. Unemployment may lead to anti-social behavior such as prostitution in the females and arm robbery or kidnapping in males.

In the broader context some devasting effects of graduate unemployment on the economy can lead to, Increase in burglary and armed robbery; while if one don’t have money, it is more likely he might choose the short and wrong way since there are mouths to feed, Psychological and financial stress;I would say, it is a double stress, deprivation from socialization, or isolation due to the risk of exposure to frequent questions from friends and family regarding the job, topple with deprivation of earning, Aggression, fear anxiety and frustration; let’s say after qualifying with grade A, have been acting as a president in student consul, with the dream of becoming a manager…what a graduate finds in the end??? Unemployment, or bestowed with a job of 18,000 Rupees a month. Won’t it would be aheartbreak, a catastrophe, not for himself alone but for the family, who till now have built an empire of dreams or might thought of taking a retirement. Homelessness, wandering, vagrancy and insecurity; with much hiking of prices, who is going to support the one on which already there have been done much investment, Prostitution, kidnapping, drug addiction; we have seen so far that people educate for seeing a bright future but what they would see if there comes no platform, when they only get letter of rejection due to lack of experience, if not then a meager salary with which one couldn’t even afford the transportation. Am not supportive of the impacts but it is reality, that is where the crime and social disgrace finds its way.

Next there comes a question, how the experience would come when a graduate never given a chance? we try new fashion, latest applications but not fresh gradates, and if then to judge on a day’sreview, by the old matured and experienced gurus. What a graduate would be doing by all this rejection, by dashing of dreams, by continuous humiliation topple with a dire need of financial resources.

This is how our individuals, our society and of economy is suffering, an MPhil is working under a BA pass, as a receptionist. For theseconsequences, the graduates have been educated? We stress on having good education, but for what for being unemployed.

Xiaomi, Oppo, And Vivo’s Foldable Smartphones Are On Schedule, Will Launch This Year: Report

Earlier this month, a foldable Xiaomi smartphone was spotted running the MIUI 12. Since then, there are rumors that the company will be launching a new foldable device later this year. Now, a new report has suggested that other Chinese OEMs are also on schedule with their own foldable handsets that will launch this year as well.

According to a known leakster @数码闲聊站, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo are gearing up for the launch of a new foldable smartphone later this year. The tipster revealed the information through a post on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website, which states that all three Chinese tech giants will officially launch their new foldable handsets sometime in 2021.

As mentioned above, a Xiaomi smartphone with a bendable screen was spotted inside a subway in China and seemed similar to Xiaomi’s VP showcased a few years back but this one has a bigger display.

This device is likely a prototype and uses a hinge mechanism similar to the  Galaxy Z Fold. The device is also shown as running MIUI 12 OS. While we know the design the Xiaomi prototype sports, it is currently unknown what design the Oppo or Vivo offerings feature. Although, it is rumored that Oppo’s foldable smartphone would also sport a similar hinge mechanism as the Xiaomi prototype.

Furthermore, the Weibo tipster also talks about Samsung and its overseas shipments of foldable displays. The South Korean company has apparently raised its shipments of foldable display, so there will also be a big wave of adoption of the firm’s seasoned flexible screen technology.

So we can expect devices with a similar hinge mechanism from different Chinese OEMs. Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report, so take it with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.

Australia is a supporter of Pak’s prosperity, stability and development: Geoffrey Shaw

ISLAMABAD, JAN 25 (DNA) – The Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr Geoffrey Shaw marked Australia Day (26 January) with a special message. He said “Australia Day, when Australians celebrate our nation’s achievements and its people, is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the relationship between our two great countries.

Australia was one of the first countries to formally recognise the new nation of Pakistan in 1947. Since then, the relationship has strengthened and deepened. We have much in common – including our shared love of cricket and historical ties – which provides a solid foundation to advance the relationship further.

Our strong linkages are shown by the more than 80,000 people of Pakistani origin who now call Australia home.

And many Pakistani students choose to study in Australia’s high quality universities and other educational institutions. These young alumni contribute to Pakistan’s bright future and build on their links with Australia.

Australia is a supporter of Pakistan’s prosperity, stability and development. In 2020, Australia has re-oriented its development cooperation to help Pakistan deal with the COVID19 emergency, such as by funding the purchase of ventilators, supporting Ehsaas nutrition centres and assisting women in lockdown.

This has been in addition to our long-running development cooperation to better manage scarce water resources, improve agricultural productivity and promote gender equality.

Growing trade and investment will be critical to the post-pandemic recovery. There is significant potential to unlock in our growing business relationship, particularly in education and agriculture. Australia also offers excellence in innovation, science and technology.

As Australia’s High Commissioner, I am confident that our two nations will continue to strengthen the positive relationship well into the future.”=DNA
