Kyrgyz president quits; prime minister, newly sprung from jail, takes over

BISHKEK : Kyrgyz President Sooronbai Jeenbekov resigned on Thursday, leaving power in the hands of a nationalist rival whose supporters freed him from jail last week.

The swift transition appears to put an end to more than a week of turmoil and unrest that followed a disputed election.

Sadyr Japarov, 51, who was named prime minister this week, told cheering supporters that he had taken on the powers of the presidency, following the resignation of Jeenbekov and of the parliament speaker, who would otherwise have been next in line.“Today, (speaker Kanatbek) Isayev signed a resignation letter. All presidential powers have fully passed to me today,” Japarov said.

Hours earlier, Jeenbekov became the third president of the small Central Asian nation since 2005 to be toppled in a popular uprising. In a statement, he said he was resigning to prevent violence, which he said would have been inevitable if protesters carried out a threat to march on his compound.

“I do not want to go down in Kyrgyzstan’s history as a president who shed blood and shot at his own citizens.”

Kyrgyzstan’s constitution requires a new election for president within three months. The rules appear to bar Japarov, as interim president, from standing again.

Kyrgyzstan has been in turmoil since an Oct. 4 parliamentary vote, which the opposition rejected after Jeenbekov’s allies were declared the winners.

Since the election, opposition supporters have taken to the streets and seized government buildings, prompting the authorities to annul the vote.

Japarov who was serving a sentence for attempting to kidnap another politician during unrest in 2013, was sprung from prison by his supporters last week. A judge then threw out his conviction, and parliamentary factions picked him to be premier.

Jeenbekov announced last week that he planned to resign, but later said he would stay in office until a new election was held. Japarov rejected the delay and pressed him to resign immediately.

Chief Justice Qasim Khan while hearing a bail plea of a woman booked in drug case ordered release of the accused on deposit of Rs one lac security bonds.

“They have paralyzed the judicial system, every day cases of lawlessness of police officials surface before the judiciary,” the top judge said.“The rules not made to protect misdeeds of police,” Justice Qasim Khan said.

“Police has registered a case of recovery of two kilo hashish from my client,” the counsel of the accused said. They have booked her in a cooked up case, the counsel further said.

Referring the arrest of the key accused of Lahore Motorway rape case, chief justice said that a statement of the father of Abid Malhi said that he has himself produced his son to the police. “They have reached to the extreme in their illegal actions across Punjab,” the chief justice remarked.

“When a court bailiff raid the police, they tamper dates describing arrests in previous dates,” Justice Qasim Khan said. “They are resorting to this because a poor person could not arrange forensic of police computers,” the justice remarked.

LHC takes notice of YouTube channels being created without proper mechanism

LAHORE : The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday took notice of YouTube channels being opened in Pakistan without any proper mechanism in place.

LHC Chief Justice Qasim Khan heard the case related to the non-removal of offensive content from on social media. Expressing indignation over the circulation of offensive content on social media, the chief justice questioned how YouTube channels were being launched across the country.

“Under which law are YouTube channels running and who monitors the content [on the video-sharing platform] ?” the judge inquired.

He also remarked that derogatory language was being used on the platform against the judiciary and that he would not allow anyone to violate the sanctity of the institution.

“How many cases have been registered by the FIA so far and how many people have been arrested?” he asked.

The court sought immediate details from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on the matter and also asked if everything was happening under government’s supervision.

The additional attorney general told the court that action is taking whenever a complaint is filed on a grievance:

“Will the judges of the judiciary now lodge complaints with the FIA?” asked the chief justice angrily.

Angry at the FIA for not taking action over the issue, the LHC chief justice remarked that the agency should be closed down.

Government blocks TikTok
The development comes days after the government had blocked Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok after the company “failed to fully comply” with its instructions for “development of an effective mechanism for proactive moderation of unlawful online content”.

The PTA said the step was taken after the authority said it received a number of complaints from different segments of society against “immoral and indecent” content on the video-sharing application.

Moreover, in a July hearing, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had taken notice of objectionable content on social media platforms in the country, noting that such forums were rife with content that incite hate against Pakistan’s institutions.

The apex court was hearing a case against suspect Shaukat Ali pertaining to a sectarian crime when the topic came under discussion.

During the hearing, Justice Qazi Ameen said that the public, through YouTube videos, is being instigated against the Army, judiciary, and the government.

“Was action taken against those who committed this crime?” said the judge, asking further if the Federal Investigation Agency and Pakistan Telecommunications Authority have noticed the content that is being uploaded on YouTube.

“On YouTube and social media, even our families are not being spared (from criticism),” said Justice Ameen.

Tribute to Pakistani American immigrant parents

Aksa Asgher

I vividly remember November 8, 2016. On that day, I was sitting in a small conference room with a large oak table in the center of the room. I was surrounded by seven chairs filled with five men and two women. I could hear the ramblings of the news anchor on the television behind me.

As one of the meeting attendees stood up to increase the volume, I heard the reporter announce how close the U.S. presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was. My eyes remained glued to the screen, watching as the blue counter slowly increased, then the red counter, and finally, the blue counter simply stopped growing.

Shortly after that, in big white letters, the banner provided the shocking news that Donald Trump would be the new President of the United States. I remember my heart dropping in that moment, and I could feel the distress of the others in the room. How could my home country decide to elect someone who was so blatantly ill-suited for the office? But alas, the American people had spoken.

I am a daughter to immigrant parents from Pakistan. My parents came to this country in search of a better livelihood and the promise of opportunity. Although I am fortunate to live a comfortable life, just as my parents dreamed for me, I continue to feel the pervasive sense that I am an “other” in Trump’s America: a Pakistani-American, Muslim woman.

This feeling is what drove me to become actively engaged in this 2020 election and volunteer my time to ensure that our country would not collectively experience the sheer distress we felt on election night in 2016.

I first got involved in the 2020 election on behalf of Vice President Joe Biden, thanks to a dear friend who invited me to join a group: South Asians for Biden. I wasn’t aware that people of our backgrounds were represented in support of the presidential campaign, so I was thrilled to join.

For the last four months, I have served on the South Asians for Biden communications team. As a member of the team, I assist with the social media team, in particular, Instagram growth and engagement. In the short time that I’ve joined the team, we’ve seen an enormous spike in growth, and it has been exhilarating to see others align with our vision.

By being involved, I am paying homage to my parents’ legacy and advancing the values they instilled in me. While contributing to organizing the South Asian community, it has been a fantastic experience to see all the different groups come together to support Vice President Joe Biden.

Observing that there are various ways to become involved, raise one’s voice, and push for change, makes me hopeful that we are steering in the right direction in pushing for a perfect union. America, at its best, is a melting pot, a place where everyone is included and welcomed. With this election, I anticipate that we can rekindle that united spirit.

That despite all odds, we can remind ourselves of what makes this great nation so unique: its people. I am thrilled to cast my vote in this election with a sense of optimism that we will make a positive change. I urge everyone to vote on the side of equality and fair representation, to vote on the side that will bring us together, stand against wrongdoing, and vote for the Biden-Harris ticket. For me, a vote for

Vice President Biden and Senator Harris is a vote for my people, the American people.

Iran lauds Pakistan role for supporting JCPOA

ISLAMABAD (DNA) : Due to the failure of the United States in the meeting of the UN Security Council, August 25, 2020, to extend the arms embargo on the Islamic Republic of Iran and adoption of a new Resolution in this regard, UNSCR 2231 is still legally binding and the members of the United Nations are required to implement and comply with it. According to this Resolution, with the end of 5 years from the adoption of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), some prohibitions and restrictions related to the Islamic Republic of Iran will be lifted. Therefore, from October 18, 2020, the sale and transfer of certain arms and related financial services and necessary measures as well as the travel of certain Iranian individuals will be unimpeded.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has considered free trade and interaction with other countries, especially its neighbors, as an important right and principle in its foreign policy and will implement it in accordance with the UN Charter and Resolutions.

Obviously, with the expiration of the five-year period and termination of the restrictions set out in UN Security Council Resolution 2231, there are no legitimate and legal obstacles to military cooperation and related financial transactions between the two neighboring countries, Iran and Pakistan. Therefore, the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Pakistan, while emphasizing the importance of its neighborly relations with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, announces the removal of military and financial restrictions on the subject of this statement, calling for further expansion of public, trade, economic, monetary- Financial and political relations with this neighbourly and brother country and welcomes any offers and facilities in this regard.

The international isolation of the United States of America in the oppressive and illegal regime of sanctions against the great and noble nation of Iran, once again showed that the international community’s approach is based on respect for the rights of nations and resolving global issues through interaction, diplomacy, dialogue and multilateralism. The failure of the United States to revive previous Security Council sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran demonstrated the supremacy of multilateralism and respect for international law over unilateralism and implementation of hostile approaches through coercion, threat, and intimidation.

The Islamic Republic of Iran acknowledges and appreciates all the states that have maintained their principled approach to defending the JCPOA and have tried to maintain the legal and executive effectiveness of this important UN document. The Embassy also expresses its special gratitude to the Government, Parliament, Senate and Honorable nation of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for supporting the JCPOA and condemning the unilateral actions of the United States of America to withdraw from this Agreement and impose cruel and inhumane sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
