Pakistan condemns Indian CDS Gen. Bipin remarks

DNA

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry on Friday strongly condemned Indian Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Bipin Rawat’s irresponsible and gratuitous remarks about Pakistan. The Indian CDS’s unabated anti-Pakistan vitriol is reflective both of his completely flawed understanding of Pakistan’s realities as well as his patently politicized approach.

His tirade is also illustrative of the RSS-BJP mindset — a dangerous mix of extremist “Hindutva” ideology and expansionist “Akhand Bharat” designs. It is a sad fact that this mindset has permeated the state institutions of India, including the armed forces.

The Indian CDS’s diatribe against Pakistan cannot divert attention from India’s myriad internal and external wrong-doings. As a consequence of the ‘Hindutva’ policies, religious places in India are regularly desecrated, mob lynchings take place with state complicity, and persecution of minorities and disadvantaged segments grows by the day.

Most notably, state-terrorism against innocent Kashmiris in IIOJK is pursued by India as an instrument of state policy.

Gen. Rawat would be well-advised to focus on his professional domain, rather than continuing to make a career out of anti-Pakistan rhetoric.

Bilawal’s statement on Nawaz Sharif is personal opinion: PML-N

ISLAMABAD, NOV 06 (DNA) – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Friday has termed Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s remarks regarding the speech of former Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif during Pakistan Democratic Movement‘s (PDM) Gujranwala rally as his personal point of view.

While reacting to Bilawal Bhutto’s interview to international news corporation, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Auranzeb stated that whatever Nawaz Sharif had said in his speech during PDM rally was based on facts. Bilawal Bhutto’s statement shows his own point of view, she told.

The reaction came after Bilawal Bhutto said that he was shocked to hear PM Nawaz Sharif directly accusing military leadership during his speech in PDM Gujranwala rally.

The PPP leader said that taking names of military leaders was Nawaz Sharif’s personal choice as he has his own party and rules. It was decided in the PDM agenda to use ‘establishment’ word and not to take name of any national institution, he told.

Bilawal Bhutto said that he is waiting for evidence by ex-PM to prove his allegations. Due to intensifying coronavirus situation, I am unable to meet the PML-N supremo. However, a formal discussion with Nawaz Sharif is required for complete details on this issue, he went on to say. = DNA

Biden overtakes Trump in Georgia vote count as race to the White House continues

Thousands of ballots are still left to be counted.

The outcome of the US presidential election remained in the balance on Friday as a handful of battleground states complete their vote counts and thousands of ballots are still left to be counted.

Former Vice President and Democrat Joe Biden overtook Republican President Donald Trump in the number of ballots counted in the battleground, a must-win state for Trump that has long been a Republican stronghold. Biden now has a 917-vote advantage.

As Biden moved closer to winning the White House, Trump adopted a fighting posture, making false claims to undermine a vote that was not going his way.

Biden has racked up at least 264 of the 270 electoral votes that he needs. Donald Trump has amassed 214 electoral votes so far, and is still in contention in several states that would afford the Republican incumbent a path to re-election.

States yet to finalise winner

  • Alaska – 3 votes (Trump leading convincingly)
  • Nevada – 6 votes (Biden leading with thin margin)
  • Pennsylvania – 20 votes (Trump leading with thin margin)
  • North Carolina – 15 votes (Trump leading)
  • Georgia – 16 votes (Biden leading with thin margin)

Expected to report final vote counts on Thursday night or Friday are Georgia (16 electoral votes), North Carolina (15), and Nevada (6).

However, mail-in ballots sent on or before Election Day in North Carolina can be counted until November 12.

Three days after Election Day, neither candidate had amassed the votes needed to win the White House. But Biden’s victories in the Great Lakes states left him at 264, meaning he was one battleground state away — any would do — from becoming president-elect.

By flipping yet another critical battleground state that Trump won four years ago, Biden placed himself in a comfortable lead, with only 6 electoral votes shy of the presidency.

Biden could reach the magic number to gain the White House with a win in either Georgia, North Carolina and Nevada, if he keeps Arizona. Trump needs to capture all three to stay competitive.

Nevada, where Biden is favoured, could put him precisely at the number needed to win, if he keeps Arizona. With more than 89 per cent of the vote counted, Biden was leading by less than 11,500 votes.

However, Pennsylvania is the biggest prize remaining, with 20 electoral votes. In the battle ground state of Georgia, Biden pulled ahead by 917 votes, according to AP, as counting continued.

Much of the delay has resulted from a flood of mail-in ballots due to the coronavirus pandemic — and those votes have tended to favour Democrats. If Biden’s lead in Arizona holds, and he wins Nevada or Georgia, he would pass the threshold of 270 electoral votes.

Should Trump hold North Carolina and Georgia but lose Arizona, he must take Nevada as well as Pennsylvania to win.

Simply winning Pennsylvania — where Trump leads but faces a possible onslaught of pro-Biden mailed ballots — will not be enough for the president, even if he takes Alaska’s three electoral votes as expected.

Much to Trump’s chagrin, Pennsylvania has decided to allow mailed ballots sent by Election Day but received up to three days afterwards to be counted. Authorities expect to complete the count by Friday.

Another factor that could keep the battle alive: the Trump campaign has unleashed a legal blitz in key states vital to the incumbent’s re-election.

It has sued to disqualify late-arriving ballots in Pennsylvania, sued in Nevada and Georgia over alleged irregularities, and has demanded a recount in Wisconsin.

Bilawal says was ‘shocked’ by Nawaz’s address at PDM’s Gujranwala rally

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Friday that he was “shocked” when he heard PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s speech during the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) first rally in Gujranwala last month in which Nawaz named the country’s top military leadership for orchestrating his ouster among other things.

The PPP chairman made the revelation during an exclusive interview with BBC Urdu, in which he discussed several topics, including the upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan elections and the 11-party opposition alliance.

In October, Nawaz had addressed the PDM’s Gujranwala rally and accused the security establishment of being behind his ouster as prime minister and for “bringing Imran Khan into power”.

In his speech, which was aired via video link from London, Nawaz had questioned who made the “state above a state” and who was responsible for the two governments in this country, going on to name Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa. He had also named Lt Gen Faiz Hameed as being behind everything.

In his interview with BBC Urdu, Bilawal said neither Nawaz nor his party had brought up naming the army or ISI chiefs when the PDM’s agenda was being prepared.

“During the all-parties conference, there was debate on whether the blame should be laid on one institution or the entire establishment,” Bilawal said, adding that “it was decided that a single institution would not be named, the establishment would.”

Bilawal went on to say that when he explicitly heard Nawaz take the names of the COAS and the ISI chief, he was “shocked”.

“It was a shock for me because, typically, we don’t talk like this at rallies. But Nawaz heads his own party and I can’t control what he says, just like he can’t control what I say,” Bilawal said.

The PPP chariman also said that the opposition did not want the military leadership to resign.

“Let me make this clear that this is not a part of our demands and does not reflect our position.”

He added that personally, he refrained from levelling accusations at rallies when it comes to his own party. “But Nawaz has the right to take such a stand if he so wishes.”

Bilawal said that Nawaz — who has served as the country’s prime minister thrice — would not have taken the names of Gen Bajwa and Gen Faiz without evidence.

“As far as taking the names of the COAS and the ISI chief is concerned, I think — and I am certain — that Nawaz will not have done so without any evidence. Such allegations should come forward on the basis of evidence.

“These are not the kind of allegations you make against anyone during a rally. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I have not had the opportunity to meet Nawaz in person, which is very important, so that we can discuss the matter in detail.”

However, Bilawal said, he will “wait for Nawaz to bring forward evidence supporting his claims”.

The PPP chief also said that in his view, the establishment had several meanings and it was not possible to point towards one individual. “Let me also say that this will not be discussed at rallies.”

Bilawal also said that brining Prime Minister Imran Khan into power cannot be attributed to just one person. He also dispelled the notion that the PPP had not openly stated its stance using the PDM platform.

“The PDM came into existence during an all-parties conference called by the PPP and the agenda of the alliance is the policy of all the parties.

“Nawaz can speak in his own manner, that is his right. I will speak in my own manner.”

Commenting on the inquiry into the events surrounding the arrest of PML-N leader retired Capt Mohammad Safdar in Karachi, Bilawal said he had not had further correspondence with the army chief in this regard.

“However, I am aware that an inquiry is currently ongoing. I am certain that the inquiry will be completed and those responsible will be identified and punished”. “Right now I am waiting patiently for me that I will be informed about the inquiry,” he said.

Bilawal — who has been in Gilgit-Baltistan for the past several days drumming up support for the PPP in the upcoming legislative assembly polls — said that elections in the region should be free and transparent.

He also called the premier’s announcement regarding granting the region provisional provincial status an attempt at “rigging”.

“We have seen the prime minister going back on his promises. Before the 2018 elections, he promised the people of south Punjab a separate province in 100 days. This did not happen. So, we will wait and see because if the premier can make a U-turn before the election, then he can also do it after the election.”

‘Nawaz’s statement based on facts’

PML-N leader and Nawaz’s spokesperson Mohammad Zubair issued a statement shortly after Bilawal’s interview was published, saying that his party respected Bilawal as he was a part of the opposition alliance.

“This is Bilawal’s personal opinion. Nawaz has served as the country’s premier and there was a PML-N government even after his (Nawaz’s) ouster. What he (Nawaz) said at the Gujranwala rally comes from the experience of the PML-N government,” Zubair said in a statement.

“This is obvious that it did not happen with the PPP. We think it is important to inform the people about what happened to ensure civilian supremacy so that what happened in the past is not repeated in the future. What Nawaz said was based on facts.”

Meanwhile, Information Minister Shibli Faraz said that Bilawal’s statement was proof of the fact that the PDM was not united in their stance.

“Bilawal has voiced his distrust of Nawaz. This proves that the alliance of opposition parties in based on vested interests,” he said.

Firdous Ashiq Awan — who has recently made a comeback as the adviser to the Punjab chief minister on information — said Bilawal’s statement had put the final nail in the opposition alliance’s coffin.

Apple developing search engine to compete with Google: report

  • Move comes during antitrust scrutiny against Google

Apple has accelerated work to develop its own search engine that would allow the iPhone maker to offer an alternative to Google.

The report, citing unnamed sources, said signs of the search engine technology have begun to appeal in its iOS 14 operating system.

The move comes amid increased scrutiny by antitrust enforcers, who sued Google in the United States over its dominance in search technology.

As part of the lawsuit, the Department of Justice noted that Google pays Apple billions of dollars to be the principal search engine on iOS devices.

Apple did not immediately respond to an AFP query. Reports in the past have said Apple had begun some in-house research on creating a search engine.

According to the FT, Apple two years ago hired Google’s head of search, John Giannandrea, in a move designed to help build artificial intelligence capabilities and its Siri virtual assistant.

Jacinda Ardern reappointed as New Zealand’s prime minister

Jacinda Ardern has been formally appointed as the Prime Minister of New Zealand on Friday, returning to the office for a second term after securing a landslide victory in the country’s general election last month.

Ardern and her ministers were sworn in by Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy during a ceremony at Wellington’s Government House.

“I would say simply that sitting at this table is Aotearoa New Zealand,” Ardern said, gesturing to her gathered team, in which women and Maori are strongly represented.

“They collectively represent a range of different perspectives, huge talent, enormous experience and, as you would expect in any time of crisis, a huge commitment to serving this country.”

PM Arden’s liberal Labour Party won 49 per cent of the party vote in the election, setting a record for becoming the first party to win enough seats since 1996. On the other hand, the opponent centre-right National Party could only secure 27 per cent of the vote along with 35 seats.

The newly-appointed cabinet has been touted for its diversity, as almost half of the members are female, while about 10% of the members identify as openly LGBTQ. New Zealand’s new deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson also identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community.

“This is a cabinet and an executive that is based on merit that also happens to be incredibly diverse and I am proud of that,” Ardern said Monday as she announced her cabinet. “They reflect New Zealand that elected them.”
