Japan welcomes Taliban, Afghan govt accord

Ambassador MATSUDA reiterated that Japan is currently working on providing assistance to Afghanistan from 2021 to 2024, maintaining the amount comparable to the past four years, which was USD 180 million per year

ISLAMABAD:  MATSUDA Kuninori, Ambassador of Japan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, has welcomed the agreement on the procedures of the on-going peace negotiations between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban announced on 2nd December, and has expressed his good wishes for further success in the Afghan peace process.

“We welcome the recent agreement between the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban, and would like to express our sincere hope for further success in the negotiations following this essential advancement,” said Ambassador MATSUDA on 3rd December.

Ambassador MATSUDA also emphasized the importance and necessity of Pakistan’s contribution to the peace process. He said, “I always appreciate the significant efforts by the Government of Pakistan to facilitate the Afghan peace process, and hope that the intra-Afghan dialogue will pave the way for regional stability.” The Ambassador reaffirmed that the Government of Japan continues to work with Pakistan to strengthen peace and stability in the region.

PRCS, ECHO work hand in hand against COVID-19

Chairman PRCS Abrar ul Haq says over 2 million people have benefited from COVID-19 emergency response so far under DRP

ISLAMABAD: A two-member delegation of European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) Thursday visited the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) National Headquarters.

Bernard Jaspers Faijer, Head of Office Pakistan/Iran at European Union Humanitarian Aid Office, headed the delegation.

The ECHO has allocated €2 million to support the PRCS’ response to the pandemic under its Domestic Response Plan (DRP).

The response includes establishment of Rawalpindi Corona Care Hospital (RCCH) within 15 days, initial screening, blood donation,provision of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), , mass awareness campaign through the Muhafiz Force of volunteers, collection/provision of cooked food to the vulnerable families during and after the lockdown, and WASH support.

The PRCS’ top brass, including Chairman Abrar ul Haq, Acting Secretary General Adeel Nawaz, Joint Director Operations Abaidullah Khan, Adviser Coordination and Transformation Col (retired) Shahrukh gave a comprehensive briefing to the delegation on response to the pandemic under DRP.

Chairman Abrar ul Haq thanked the ECHO, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) and its Movement Partners for their financial and technical support to the PRCS.

The chairman informed the delegation that the ECHO funds were being spent in a transparent way enabling the PRCS to save many precious human lives. He said over 2 million people had benefited from the COVID-19 emergency response so far.

The delegation was further informed that President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Imran Khan, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Ministry of Health had highly appreciated the PRCS’ anti-COVID response.

Mr. Bernard expressed satisfaction over the transparent use of funding by the PRCS and its ongoing response to the pandemic. He also praised the activities of Muhafiz Force and 1030 service.

After the briefing, Mr. Bernard interacted with the volunteers and asked them different questions related to their assigned responsibilities.

He appreciated the working of volunteers and exhorted them to spare no effort to serve the humanity with commitment and dedication.

The delegation later visited the state-of-the art Rawalpindi Corona Care Hospital where Deputy Medical Superintendent gave a comprehensive presentation. After the briefing, the delegation went round various non infected departments of the hospital and appreciated strict adherence to the health and security protocols and best care of patients.

Ivorian opposition figure in hospital

Ivorian opposition figure Pascal Affi N’guessan, who was in detention, has been taken to a hospital in the country’s main city, Abidjan.

The Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) leader and spokesperson was spotted at the hospital on Monday night by residents, according to local media.

There were guards outside his hospital room, a resident who was quoted by Notre Voie newspaper said.

It is unclear what is ailing the opposition figure.

Mr N’guessan was arrested early last month after President Alassane Ouattara’s re-election.

He was then held at a secret detention facility.

Nation to observe Youm-e-Dua tomorrow: President Arif Alvi

ISLAMABAD : President Dr. Arif Alvi has announced that the nation will observe Youm-e-Dua on Friday (tomorrow) to pray to Almighty Allah for protection from the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking after an interaction with Ulema in Islamabad on Thursday, he said a strategy of a combination of prayers, precautionary measures, and taking care of the weak segment of the society will be pursued in the second wave of COVID-19. reported Radio Pakistan.President Arif Alvi said Pakistan remained successful in controlling the pandemic in its first wave.

He appealed to the masses to strictly adhere to the standard operating procedures to check surge of the pandemic. He said Ulema have an important role in spreading awareness about precautionary measures. He said they have also agreed to play their effective role in this regard.

The president said Ulema have reaffirmed the SOPs issued for mosques on April 17. He said the Ulema observed that politicians also need to demonstrate unity against the pandemic and postpone their public gatherings.

He also urged the media to enhance its role in spreading awareness among people about SOPs against the pandemic.

ICC nominates five Pakistani cricketers for ODI team of the decade

Lahore : Five Pakistani cricketers, three men, and two women are in the run to be selected for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) ODI teams of the decade.

The probables for inclusion in the ICC men’s and women’s ODI team of the decade were revealed yesterday.

For the men’s ODI team, three cricketers — Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Hafeez, and Misbah ul Haq — are among the nominees.

The ICC had earlier nominated Misbah for the Spirit of Cricket award of the decade.

Misbah, who led the Pakistan Cricket team in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, scored 3599 runs in 97 innings — the second-most by a Pakistani since January 2010.

Mohammad Hafeez leads the list of leading run-scorers for Pakistan in the period with 5,740 ODI runs to his credit in the last 10 years. In addition, he has also claimed 101 wickets in the period.

Saeed Ajmal, with 157 ODI wickets during the period, leads the bowlers’ chart for Pakistan.

As far as women’s cricket is concerned, Javeria Khan is Pakistan’s lead batting performer with 2,586 runs to her name, while Sana Mir in the same period has taken 120 wickets and scored 1,305 runs in Women ODIs.

Pakistan has exposed Indian state sponsorship of terrorism in dossier: DG ISPR

RAWALPINDI : Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG-ISPR) Major General Babar Iftikhar has said that Pakistan has exposed Indian state sponsorship of terrorism in its dossier containing incontrovertible evidence.

In an interview with Global Village Space, DG ISPR Major General Babar Iftikhar said that Pakistan’s dossier containing irrefutable evidence of India’s sponsorship of terrorism in Pakistan has exposed New Delhi’s nefarious designs at the international level.

Responding to a question about how the world reacted after his [DG ISPR] joint presser along with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi about Indian involvement in terrorism in Pakistan, the military’s spokesperson replied, “After Pakistan’s dossier, the world now is openly talking about India’s sponsorship of terrorism in Pakistan.”

The dossier also contains details of rights violations by the Indian government in the occupied Kashmir., the DG ISPR said and added that New Delhi is on the back foot after August 5, 2019.

He said that a copy of the dossier was also submitted to the office of the United Nations Secretary General’s office.

CPEC

Responding to a query related to the security threats for China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) from India, he said that Indians have openly said that they won’t let CPEC projects to be completed on the time.

Major General Iftikhar said that CPEC is the target of the enemies of Pakistan as it is a game-changer project for Islamabad and the entire region.

India formed an anti-CPEC cell which is directly reporting to Indian PM Narendra Modi, to destabilized the mega projects, DG ISPR maintained.

Afghan issue

Replying to another question about Afghan soil being used in terrorism in Pakistan and targeting CPEC, Major General Babar Iftikhar said that, Islamabad has been talking with the Afghan leadership about the issue.

Due to the capacity issues of the Afghan government, Pakistan does not blames Kabul much for use of its soil in terror activities in Pakistan.

“India using Afghan soil to target CPEC, New Delhi patronizing terrorists.” The DG ISPR said that Pakistan is fully capable and prepared to defend CPEC and national security.

Our Chinese partners are also happy with the security steps placed by Pakistan for the labour and companies working on the CPEC projects.

DG ISPR said that a special division has been raised for the protection of CPEC projects and eight to nine regular regiments are also deployed to protect the economic corridor.

Occupied Kashmir plight

On occupied Kashmir’s plight, Major General Babar Iftikhar said that India linking Kashmiris fight for freedom with Pakistan to distract the world’s attention from the IoK.

The recent declaration of the Organisation of the Islamic Organisation (OIC) has supported Pakistan’s stance over occupied Kashmir that India is carrying out worst right violations in the valley.

DG ISPR said Pakistan always tried to settle its dispute with India through dialogue, but India always walked away.

He underlined the need to normalize the situation in the region.

Tevta to establish 20 centers across punjab

FAISALABAD. Technical Education and Vocation Training Authority will establish as many as 20 centers of excellence across the province to overcome the acute shortage of highly trained and skilled manpower while international donors will provide latest machinery worth 189 million dollar to these centers, said Mr. Ali Salman Siddiqui Chairman TEVTA.

He was addressing a meeting in Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) here today which was also attended by Major Retired Shahnawaz Badar Chairman Punjab Vocational Training Council (PVTC).  He said that current apprenticeship law was introduced in 1962 which has become outdated and is not compatible with the current needs of the industrial sector.

He said that draft of new apprenticeship law has been finalized and after its enactment by the Punjab Assembly, TEVTA will transform its entire institutes on the latest apprenticeship model. Regarding proposed sector skill councils, he said that these councils will be consistent with their specific sector individuals and hence would be able to redress their genuine issues on top priority basis. He said that GIZ will also help us in producing ten thousand master trainers.

He said that FCCI should finalize its sector skill councils positively within two weeks so that its problems could be resolved within the next six months paving way to start training courses in that particular sector as early as possible. Regarding technical universities, he said that four universities have been established while another technical university could also be established in Faisalabad. “However for this purpose positive nod from Punjab Assembly will be required”, he added. Mr. Ali Salman said that TEVTA has evolved a new strategy for skill eco-system to produce skill manpower by removing missing links between industry and training institutions.

The skill council will be established under this system which will provide Competency Based Training Assessment (CBTA) courses. The diploma holders of these courses could get jobs not only within the country but also in other 130 countries where this course is acknowledged. He said that Faisalabad will have a center of Excellence while a surgical center could be established in Sialkot according to their specific skills.Major Retired Shahnawaz Badar Chairman PVTC said that this council is working with District Boards of Management which are industrialists related to that particular District.He said that Faisalabad city has three while there are 12 PVTC centers in this District.

The BOM has been mandated to introduce need-base courses while its syllabus is also decided by the concerned industrialists for the immediate absorption of passed out students.Earlier Engineer Hafiz Ihtasham Javed President FCCI welcomed the guests and said that predominantly Faisalabad is an industrial city and is considered as heaven for the skilled workers.

He told that this city is contributing 20-25 percent share in total economy of Pakistan while its share in textile export is 65 percent. He appreciated the Government policies and said that despite Corona, our industrial sector is growing at a comfortable level. “We made exports of 2 billion dollar during the month of October”, he said and added that this tempo was maintained in November which witnessed growth of 7.5 percent. He said that the new textile policy is in the final stage which will give a quantum jump to our exports. He said that Pakistan is getting hefty export orders despite the global slump and our industrial units which were running with only 40 percent of their installed capacity are now working in two shifts. Some export oriented units are making arrangements to start a third shift and hence, they are facing shortage of trained manpower.

He said that TEVTA and PVTC must expedite their efforts to ensure easy availability of skilled manpower in abundance. He said that in proposed textile policy, the export target will be fixed at 25 billion dollars by the year 2025 from the existing 13.5 billion dollars. “For this purpose we must train our work force on modern scientific line”, he said and added that more technical colleges and a university are deemed necessary to fulfill this need.A question answer session was also held which was participated by Mian Javed Iqbal, Mian Furrukh Habib FederalParliamentary Secretary and Ms. Firdus Rai MPA. Senior Vice President Chaudhary Tallat Mahmood offered vote of thanks while Vice President Rana Ayub Aslam Manj presented FCCI shield to Major Retired Shahnawaz Badar Chairman PVTC.Former President Mian Javed Iqbal also presented a memento of FCCI to Mr. Ali Salman Siddiqui Chairman TEVTA.

FESCO officials asked to install pending connections

FAISALABAD/Ashfaq Mughal : Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) Engr. Arshad Munir has directed heads of all five operation circles including First, Second, Jhang, Sargodha and Mianwali to install all pending electricity connections immediately.

He also directed to escalate the action against power pilferage and checking of commercial connections.In this connection, FESCO special task forces are checking different electricity connection including domestic, commercial, industrial and tube well to detect the power theft while recovery teams are making recovery from running and dead defaulters. In addition, hazardous points causing fatal and non-fatal accidents are also removing with high speed and progress report is being submitted to CEO FESCO on daily basis.

Engr. Arshad Munir, directed the FESCO staff to utilize all resources to solve the consumers complaints on priority and improvement of the FESCO distribution system so that uninterrupted power supply to consumers could be ensured. He ordered to take strict action against power pilferers without any discrimination and ensure the registration against power stealers so that FESCO could get rid from this nation crime.

Pakistan condemns assassination of Fakhri Zadeh.

ISLAMABAD – (DNA) : Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman on Thursday condemned the terrorist attack in response to last Friday’s terrorist attack in Iran and the cowardly assassination of a prominent Iranian nuclear scientist.

At his weekly news conference in Islamabad, in response to an IRNA reporter’s question, Zahid Hafiz Chaudhry announced the official position of the Pakistani government on the assassination of a prominent Iranian nuclear scientist.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan expressed his condolences on the martyrdom of Dr. Mohsen Fakhri Zadeh to the honorable family of this great martyr and also to the people of Iran. Zahid Chaudhry stressed what he called Pakistan’s firm call on all sides to exercise maximum restraint and prevent escalating tensions in the region.

Earlier, Pakistani political and religious parties in Karachi, including politicians and heads of prominent think tanks, condemned the assassination of a prominent Iranian scientist as a result of the terrorist act of the Zionist regime and its allies in the region and condemned this cowardly act.

Dr. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, Deputy Minister of Defense and Head of the Research and Innovation Organization of the Ministry of Defense, who was described by the Supreme Leader as a distinguished nuclear and defense scientist of Iran, on Friday evening, November 27, in Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Boulevard in Absard, Damavand, east Tehran was martyred during a terrorist operation by the criminal elements of the Zionist regime.

AIOU sign MoU with NextGen-U, NHSD

Islamabad, Dec. 03 (DNA). Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Canadian organization, NextGen-U, and a Pakistan-based non-governmental organization Network for Human and Social Development (NHSD) for offering jointly certificate courses focused on public health in Pakistan.

The MoU signing ceremony was held here at the main campus of the university the other day. Prof. Dr. Zia Ul-Qayyum, Vice Chancellor, AIOU presided over the session. On this occasion Prof. Dr. Zafar Ilyas, Dean Faculty of Sciences, AIOU welcomed the participants while Dr. Hajra Ahmad, Chairperson Department of Environmental Design, Health and Nutrition Sciences highlighted the aims and objectives of collaboration between the three organizations. Sohail Nazir Rana, Registrar AIOU, Dr. Fozia Moghees Executive Director, NHSD, and Prof. Dr. Erica Frank founder and Executive Director of NextGen-U signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations. Senior faculty members and administrative officers of AIOU were present of this occasion. Prof. Dr. Erica Frank and Miriam Chickering joined the ceremony online. The function was arranged by Department of Environmental Design, Health and Nutrition Sciences AIOU.

Prof. Dr. Zia Ul-Qayyum while speaking on this occasion said that AIOU has been mandated with the responsibility of mass education in Pakistan. He said that his university is joining hands with national and international organizations for promotion of education and changing lifestyle of poor strata of the country by educating them. Prof Zia further said that promotion of Public health education is the dire need of the day. He hoped that the joint venture of the three collaborating organizations would play a key role in this regard. He urged upon the partner organizations to work for converting these certificate level courses into degree programs in the domain of Public Health. Prof. Zia Ul-Qayyum viewed that this collaboration would help Pakistani students to get international standard education without visiting aboard. He further informed that AIOU is working on collaborations with various international organizations based in America, United Kingdom, Gulf countries, etc.

The Vice Chancellor briefed the partners organization about the services of AIOU which the university provides across the country. He said that AIOU has a rich and extensive network of regional services in the areas of Pakistan where there are no educational facilities or there are very few educational facilities.

Dr. Hajra informed the participants that six certificate level courses on Community Oriented Primary Care, Epidemiology in Health, Ethics in Public Health and Nutrition, Lifestyle and Health, Environmental Health, and Climate Change and Health have been produced and approved by the statutory bodies of the AIOU and admissions in these courses would be offered in the upcoming semester i.e., Spring 2021.
