DNA

KARACHI – Elections of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) will be scheduled on December 30th and likely to be turning into interesting scenario on the concept of hung parliament. The campaign of two leading groups Businessmen Panel (BMP) and United Business Group (UBG) are on the way of completion, both group beating their drums of winning and claimed the confidence of majority voters from 180 trade bodies who will participate in the forth coming elections.

Till now three candidates of Vice President’s have won their seats unopposed; Vice President from Sindh Province (belongs to UBG), Vice President from Baluchistan province (belongs to BMP) and Vice President from Women Chambers namely Adeel Siddiqui, Nasir Khan and Farzana Ali Baloch have already elected. This election the seat of Federation President belongs to Sindh Province as per rotation policy of the trade act 2013 and in this regard Mian Naseer Hayat Magoon, Former President KCCI and Sheikh Khalid Tawab, Former SVP FPCCI will contest.

Similarly for the Seat of Senior Vice President FPCCI , Shahzeb Akram Former Chairman PPMA and Abdul Rauf Mukhtar Former Vice President FPCCI will contest.Sources said in the remaining eight seats of Vice Presidents , UBG have a majority in the chamber class of the Punjab Province, while BMP have a majority in the chamber class of KPK Province, including BMP have little majority on the seat of Small Chambers and a tie on the seat of Federal Area, till the pending decision of the Mirpur Chamber of Commerce.

Interestingly on the Association Class and in the preview of the nomination papers filed before Election Commission of the FPCCI, both BMP and UBG groups likely to get two, two seats respectively but final outcome will be witnessed on the Election Day at Karachi that how voters would reciprocate.Sources also said on January 1st, 2021, FPCCI corridors will witness a combination of both group office bearers, because clean sweep in the Federation elections couldn’t been seen possible and it is equally be good for the business community that their apex trade body will perform for their cause due to stiff competition.

If we look around on neighbour countries Federations, The FICCI, FBCCI are playing their persistence role for uplifting their country economies, so same is expected now from FPCCI that now they should come out, solve their bottlenecks and play their different role, they should provide out of box solutions and also they should behave as a effective think tank of the business community before the eyes of the government.Similarly Government also needs a effective voice from FPCCI especially on the front of trade diplomacy, till date FPCCI lacks in it and that’s why Pakistan couldn’t perform properly; the Post Brexit is the novel opportunity for pakistani businesses to tap Britain market.

Economic stability requires better insurance penetration: Abdul Haye

DNA

KARACHI – Former Convenor FPCCI Central Committee on Insurance Dr Murtaza Mughal on Saturday said the insurance industry has failed to deliver amid pandemic calling for new products and reforms in this sector so that it can deliver in challenging environment.

Talking to Senior Vice Chairman Insurance Association of Pakistan (IAP) and CEO Alfalah Insurance Abdul Haye and other industry experts, Dr Murtaza Mughal said that claims are being avoided because the policies were not designed to pay out when there is a pandemic; and if paid, it will push service providers to insolvency.

He said that insurance is meant to act as a safety net for people and businesses but presently some type of government-backed scheme is needed.

He said that SECP and Insurance Association of Pakistan (IAP) must join hands to boost the insurance sector so that it can play its due role in the national development while improving the insurance penetration which is a prerequisite for a stable economy.

He emphasised on increasing insurance penetration in Pakistan which is less than 1 percent of the GDP as against the global average of around 5 to 6 percent.

Dr. Mughal who is also president of Pakistan Economy Watch stressed on the need of implementation of  compulsory third party motor insurance and compulsory group medical insurance in Pakistan which is pending with SECP since 2018.

He was of the view that annually almost 20,000 people die in road accidents while many more get injured and they are not compensated.

CEO Alfalah Insurance Abdul Haye was of the view that in wake of current pandemic private employers having more than 50 employees should provide health insurance cover to their staff  while enforcement of compulsory group life insurance in Pakistan for companies should be considered.

The participants emphasised on adoption of uniform laws governing insurance sector as different provinces are following different rules and regulations creating problems while business ethics should be stressed.

Satwat Butt, former chairman Regional Committie North IAP, Chairman Lahore Insurance Institute Muhammad Hisham and Altimash Malik, GM UIC and others were also present in the meeting.

India slump to lowest ever score as Australia clinch first Test

ADELAIDE, DEC 19 – A devastated India crashed to their lowest ever score of 36 on Saturday as Australia ran riot to win the opening Test in Adelaide by eight wickets after Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins produced a bowling masterclass.

India started the third day of the pink-ball Test on nine for one and with a 62-run lead, looking to build a competitive second innings total for the hosts to chase.

But their hopes were left in tatters by a wicket with bounce and deviation as Hazlewood took 5-8, including his 200th Test wicket, and Cummins 4-21.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine claimed five catches as the bowlers found the edge.

“I didn’t expect it to come that quick, I was expecting a real dogfight,” said skipper Paine. “To hang in, give our bowlers a chance, and then turn up and start the day the way we did, full credit to our bowling attack again.

“It’s nice to get off to a good start. Chuffed with the way we bowled in this Test.”

It was an incredible Indian collapse, with no batsman reaching double figures during a capitulation that lasted less than 22 overs, in contrast to their battling first innings’ 244.

That included skipper Virat Kohli, who fell for four and now heads home for the birth of his first child, leaving his stunned team to face three more Tests, starting in Melbourne on Boxing Day, without him. Ajinkya Rahane will assume the captaincy.

“It’s very hard to put those feelings into words,” said a disconsolate Kohli.

“We had a lead of 60-odd when we arrived, and then just collapsed. We played two days of good cricket to get in a position and then just lose it in an hour. It really hurts.”

India’s previous Test low was 42 against England at Lord’s in 1974. Their 36 was the joint fourth lowest of all time, with New Zealand’s 26 facing England in 1955 at Auckland the worst ever.

The carnage left Australia, who scored 191 in the first innings, needing 90 to win, with out-of-form Joe Burns hitting a confidence-building 51 not out, including a six to win the match.

Matthew Wade made 33 and Marnus Labuschagne six with Steve Smith not out one.

In trouble

Cummins wasted no time removing nightwatchman Jasprit Bumrah for two in the second over of the day, temping him to push at a slower ball that popped back up to him.

That brought the stubborn Cheteshwar Pujara to the crease. He saw off an over from Cummins, but that was as good as it got for the veteran who fell without scoring. Cummins, the world’s number one Test bowler, sent down a delivery that had to be played and Pujara caught an edge that carried to wicketkeeper Paine.

It left India on 15 for three, and it only got worse with opener Mayank Agarwal back in the pavilion five balls later for nine, again caught by Paine on Hazlewood’s opening delivery.

Hazlewood and Paine again combined to get rid of Rahane for naught, after which Cummins picked up the massive wicket of Kohli.

The superstar batsman had smacked Cummins for four but was gone the next ball after a review, caught by debutant Cameron Green as he attempted a cover drive.

At 19 for six, India were in real danger of making their lowest ever score and when Wriddhiman Saha (4) chipped a Hazlewood delivery to Marnus Labuschagne and Ravi Ashwin was out next ball it became a reality.

A four from Hanuma Vihari spared them some shame, taking India past New Zealand’s all-time low. But Vihari (8) didn’t last much longer, caught by Paine with Hazlewood again doing the damage to complete an excellent five-wicket haul, before Mohammed Shami was forced to retire hurt after a Cummins thunderbolt hit his right arm.

UN confirms vehicle on routine patrol damaged in Rawalakot, says investigating incident

The United Nations on Friday confirmed that a vehicle of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) was hit by an “unidentified object” near Rawalakot on the Pakistani side of Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region, but the occupants were not injured.

“The Mission is currently investigating the incident,” Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said in response to a question at the regular briefing in New York. He said that according to details present with him, no one was injured in the incident but the UNMOGIP vehicle sustained damage.

Responding to an Indian journalist’s question, of whether the UN is aware of the Indian government’s rejection of reports from Pakistan, Haq said, “We are aware of what both sides have been saying”.

“At this stage, we’re simply aware that a vehicle was hit by an unidentified object, like I said no one was harmed […] and we are investigating the incident.”

He said the incident occurred when UNMOGIP military observers were conducting routine monitoring activities near Rawalakot as part of the Mission’s mandate to observe and report on ceasefire violations at the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

In Islamabad, the Foreign office said Indian troops “specifically targeted” the UN vehicle carrying two UNMOGIP officers in what was termed a “new low” in Indian conduct.

The UNMOGIP officers were on their way to Polas village to meet with the victims of Indian ceasefire violations when they came under fire, the Foreign Office said.

The officers were immediately evacuated by the Pakistan Army and brought back to the UNMOGIP field station in Rawalakot, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Sharing pictures of the UN vehicle with bullet holes, the military’s media wing said the attack was “deliberate” since “UN vehicles are clearly recognisable even from long distances due to their distinct make and type and clearly visible markings.”

“Such illegal and unlawful acts against all established international norms, signify mal-intent of Indian Army to target not only innocent civilians residing along the Line of Control but UN Peace Keepers as well,” it said.

“This act only goes to show Indian Army’s complete disregard to principles enshrined in [the] UN Charter. It is indeed a new low for Indian Army.”

The ISPR said the Pakistan Army stood in solidarity with UNMOGIP officials and appreciated the “selfless services rendered by all members of UNMOGIP in discharge of their UN-mandated duties”.
