Police arrest five suspects in ATC judge, family murder case

SWABI: Police have registered a first information report (FIR) of the assasination of a Swat Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) judge with his three family members at the Swabi Interchange on Islamabad-Peshwar Motorway.

The case was registered on a complaint of the judge’s son at Chota Lahore police station.

Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Latif Afridi is among those named accused in the case. Other accused include Jamil, Danish Afridi, Jamal Afridi, and Abid Muhammad Shafiq.

In addition to them, four unidentified accused have also been included in the FIR.

Separately, the district police officer (DPO) said a joint police team conducted raids in Peshawar and Khyber districts and arrested five suspects. Two vehicles mentioned in the FIR were also recovered from their possession.

The DPO said the slain judge’s son Majid Afridi will have a look at the arrested suspects during an identification parade to confirm whether they were involved in the murder of his father and other family members.

Taiwan rescuers work to bring out last body from wrecked train

TAIPEI: Taiwanese rescuers were trying on Monday to retrieve the last body of a passenger from wreckage of a deadly train crash last week.

Fifty people have been confirmed dead after a packed express train carrying almost 500 passengers and crew slammed into a truck near the eastern city of Hualien on Friday, causing it to derail and the front end to crumple. It was the island’s worst rail accident in seven decades.

The truck had slid down a sloping road from a building site onto the tracks just outside a tunnel. Officials suspect the truck’s brakes were not properly applied and are investigating the manager of the site.

Hualien’s fire department said that the remaining body was trapped under a 15-tonne train bogie. It did not provide details on the identity of the passenger.

“The rescue is difficult, and we are currently discussing how to overcome these difficulties, so the time it takes may be delayed,” the department said.

Transport Minister Lin Chia-lung said late on Sunday that he took responsibility for the accident and would step down once initial rescue and recovery work was complete.

The victims include two Americans and one French national.

Taiwan’s government has promised compensation and said it would do everything it could to help survivors and their relatives, including coordinating public donations.

The damaged section of the track is not expected to reopen until April 20 at the earliest, though rail traffic continues on a parallel track that runs through another tunnel and was not affected by the accident.

The crash occurred at the start of a long weekend for the traditional Tomb Sweeping Day, when people return home to tend to family graves.

Taiwan has no domestic travel curbs, as the COVID-19 pandemic is well under control, with only 40 active cases in hospitals.

Taiwan’s worst train crash was in 1948, when 64 people are estimated to have died in a fire.

Pakistan records 5,020 coronavirus cases, 81 deaths in a day

ISLAMABAD: Coronavirus has claimed 43 more lives in Pakistan during the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 14,821.

The latest statistics of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) showed the COVID-19 has claimed 43 more lives and 4,323 fresh infections were reported during the period.

During the period of a day, the total count of active cases was recorded at 61,450 and the positivity rate stood at 9.96 per cent.

The health facilities across the country conducted 43,362 coronavirus detection tests, taking the total number of COVID-19 tests to 10,446,697 since the first case was reported.

According to the statistics, 19 patients were declared critical, adding to the total number of patients suffering from sensitive health condition up to 3,587.

Overall 615,960 people have recovered from the virus including 2,902 who have regained their health from COVID-19 during the past 24 hours.

Yesterday, keeping in view the recent spike in COVID-19 cases amid the third wave of the disease, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) had suspended inter-provincial transport for two days a week (Saturday and Sunday).

The NCOC had restricted inter-provincial public transport only on weekends. However, cargo trucks, containers, medical and emergency services will be exempted from the restrictions.

The new restrictions will come into force from April 10 and will continue to remain effective till 25th of April. NCOC further said that Pakistan Railways will continue to operate passenger trains seven days a week with 70 per cent occupancy.

BANGSAMORO AWAITS INTERIM GOV’T EXTENSION

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will personally meet the Senate president and Congress Speaker to decide on extending the limit of the Bangsamoro Transitional Authority (BTA) until 2025, sources said.

“President Duterte will now decide about an extension in the BTA beyond 2022,” government sources told Anadolu Agency.

Last week, sources said representatives from the regional Bangsamoro government met virtually with Duterte, Cabinet members, Philippines Senate president and the Congress speaker.

“Everyone supported the move to extend the transition period and hold elections in 2025,” they said. “There was only one objection — the governor of Sulu province [of Bangsamoro].”

Before the BTA was founded in 2019 following a popular referendum, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), led by Al-Hajj Murad Ebrahim, asked for a transition period of six years during peace negotiations with the Manila national government.

But negotiations resulted in a three-year transitional government under Ebrahim until 2022.

The two sides agreed to allow the transitional government to take control of regional governance and run affairs until 2022, when elections were expected to be held.

But voices have been raised to extend the BTA time limit until 2025. Almost all BTA parliament members have unanimously supported the motion, while residents across the region have held marches supporting the demand in recent few weeks.

Members of the current Bangsamoro regional government believe they need more time to achieve the set target before elections are conducted.
At least seven bills have been filed in Congress and the Senate-six of which seek an extension while one advocates that elections be held at the agreed time in 2022.

Bangsamoro is a region of nearly 5 million people who are ethnic Moros and mostly Muslims. It has five provinces and three cities, including a capital.

The MILF led the region’s struggle for autonomy since the mid-20th century, ultimately resulting in peace talks and the BTA formation after a referendum on Jan. 21, 2019.

Congress is expected to resume business in May when the bills will be debated and are expected to be passed, sources said.

Last year, the autonomous government passed the Bangsamoro Administrative Code and declared Feb. 21 a non-working holiday.

ATC JUDGE KILLED ALONG WITH WIFE, CHILDREN IN SWABI ATTACK

SWABI, Apr 04 (DNA): An anti-terrorism court (ATC) judge was on Sunday
killed along with his wife and children after unidentified men opened
fire on his vehicle in Swabi district of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)
province.

According to police, the vehicle of the ATC judge was targeted by
unidentified men near Ambar interchange in Swabi, which led to the death
of the judge, his wife, and two children.

“Two security guards in the judge’s convoy also sustained wounds in the
attack,” they said adding that the judge was travelling from Swat to
Islamabad when his vehicle got under attack.

The bodies and the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for
medico-legal formalities and treatment respectively. The security forces
and police cordoned off the area and started collecting evidence from
the scene for forensic analysis.

Aftab Khan Afridi was an ATC judge in Swat and was posted two months
back. The Swat Bar Association has announced to protest against the
attack on Monday (tomorrow). “No one will appear before the courts
tomorrow,” said the president of the Swat Bar Association.

Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan condemned the attack on the ATC judge and
expressed his grief over the loss of human lives in the incident.
“Targeting women and children is a coward attempt,” he said adding that
those behind the attack would not be spared.
The chief minister directed the police to immediately arrest the
culprits behind the attack.

Mogadishu, APR 4 – Four teenagers and an infant have been killed and at least four more people were injured in a suicide attack in Somalia‘s capital on Saturday evening, an official said.

A suicide bomber blew himself up near a busy restaurant in Mogadishu’s Shangani district, according to police spokesperson Sadaq Adan Ali.

Shangani is a high-security area of the capital that houses the ministries of internal security and sports and youth affairs.

A police station is also located near the area where the bombing occurred.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, but the al-Shabaab terror group has been behind most recent attacks in the Somali capital.

Turkey ranks 6th globally in virus vaccination numbers

ANKARA, APR 4: “We rank sixth among countries with the highest number of vaccines,” Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said in a statement on Saturday. “The countries that give more vaccines than us are the U.S., China, India, the U.K. and Brazil,” he added.

According to the minister, Turkey has so far administered more than 16.6 million coronavirus vaccine jabs across the country.

“Among the countries which have yet to produce their own vaccine, Turkey stands as one of the states that conducts the most jabs,” Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter.

According to Health Ministry data, since Turkey began a mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign on Jan. 14, more than 9.5 million people to date have received their first doses, while second doses have been given to over 7.13 million.

As of the end of March, Turkey entered the second stage of its COVID-19 vaccination campaign by beginning immunizations for those aged 60 and above and their spouses, as well as certain individuals who are considered high risk.

Among the prioritized group are cancer patients with malign tumors, the morbidly obese, dialysis patients, those with Down syndrome and those receiving immunosuppressive treatment.

The vaccine rollout in Turkey has been relatively quick with the government dividing the whole process into four stages. The first stage, which includes critical front-line health care staff, people over the age of 65, elderly and disabled adults living in crowded places and those living at nursing homes, was recently concluded.

The Turkish Ministry of Health has also updated its digital hospital and doctor appointment system to accommodate choice for the coronavirus vaccine.

As part of the update, those who enter the Central Physician Appointment System (MHRS) will be asked which vaccine they would prefer to have while selecting the hospital, clinic, day and time of their appointment. Koca said that the online selection option will be live after April 2.

Those who have a vaccination appointment before then can call the government health helpline 182 to change their vaccine.

To see if you are prioritized for the vaccine or if your turn has arrived, you can also check the government’s e-Nabız (e-Pulse) app, a digital platform that stores all health records. Those registered on the app will also be able to access their digital vaccination certificates after they receive both doses.

First doses of Pfizer-BioNTech administered

Meanwhile, the first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine Comirnaty were administered in the capital Ankara on Friday. Turkey has so far received 2.8 million doses of the vaccine, which was developed by second-generation Turkish immigrants in Germany.

The total is set to reach 4.5 million in the coming weeks, Koca told reporters in Parliament on Tuesday.

People who had appointments for COVID-19 shots at Ankara City Hospital on Friday were asked for their preference between the Pfizer-BioNTech and China’s CoronaVac jabs.

There were no side effects reported by people who opted for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Adem Özsoy, a Turkish citizen, said he was happy to have received his first dose of the vaccine.

Senol Bulcan, another recipient, urged people to sign up for vaccinations and said he was looking forward to seeing the end of the pandemic.

People in Turkey can schedule appointments for vaccinations over the phone, online and through a mobile app.

With Comirnaty’s arrival to Turkey, questions have arisen among the public concerning which jab to choose. Experts say both vaccines are good for protecting against the coronavirus, though opinions are mixed.

Ümit Savaşçı, an infectious diseases expert from the Health Sciences University in the capital Ankara, says each vaccine caters to different types of people. “You should choose CoronaVac if you are taking immunosuppressive drugs, chemotherapy or have a history of neurological disease.

If you are young, do not have any health conditions or have a chronic disease (other than cancer and neurological diseases), you may opt for Comirnaty as its rate of protection is 10% higher than CoronaVac in those cases,” he said.

Savaşçı told Demirören News Agency (DHA) Friday that the results of studies showed that people who received CoronaVac jabs had recovered from infections easily even if they were infected after vaccination and the vaccine “decreased the hospitalization rate” among patients by 100%.

He said, although Comirnaty appeared to have higher efficacy than CoronaVac, the number of doses currently available is limited. Savaşçı, who himself volunteered for human trials of Comirnaty, said he did not suffer any side effects after months of observations and assured the public not to be worried about any side effects of either Comirnaty or CoronaVac. “They have both undergone extensive tests and analysis (by the Health Ministry) before they were approved for mass use,” he noted.

Savaşçı also dispelled the rumors that the vaccines “infect” people. “People who get vaccinated but infected later anyway falsely believe it is the result of the shot. It is impossible to get infected via a vaccine.

For mRNA vaccines, for instance, no traces of the vaccine is left in the body soon after vaccination. It does not affect our genes, it does not leave any genetic damage as (some have) claimed,” he said.

Turkey itself is expected to roll out its first locally produced COVID-19 vaccine by the end of summer, the country’s health minister said Thursday, as Turkish scientists work on more than a dozen vaccines and drugs against the virus.

Samsun remains first as cases on the rise countrywide

Health Minister Koca has also announced weekly coronavirus infection rates across the 81 provinces. According to data shared by the minister, the Black Sea province of Samsun continued to have the highest weekly case total with 678 per 100,000 people.

“It is in our hands to turn the situation in our favor,” Koca said, sharing infection data concerning the period between March 27 and April 2 on Twitter.

The number of cases per 100,000 people was 591 in the country’s biggest city Istanbul, up from 401 in the previous week; 272 in the capital Ankara, up from 184, and 218 in the western Izmir province, up from 156 last week.

The southeastern provinces of Şırnak, Hakkari, Şanlıurfa, Bitlis and the eastern province of Van had the lowest COVID-19 infections per 100,000 people between the given dates, with Şırnak having just 23.

As of Saturday, Turkey confirmed more than 3.44 million cases, 32,078 fatalities and over 3 million recoveries nationwide.

In the face of rising case and fatality numbers, Turkey announced the return of weekend lockdowns in high-risk areas, as well as other restrictions, in addition to special measures for the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Since December 2019, the pandemic has claimed over 2.84 million lives in 192 countries and regions, according to figures compiled by the U.S.’ Johns Hopkins University. Over 130.5 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries now nearing 74 million.

PAKISTAN TO DISCUSS RESUMPTION OF HOCKEY TIES WITH INDIA: REPORT

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and India are expected to hold talks to resume hockey ties. The matter may be discussed on the sidelines of the 47th International Hockey Federation (FIH) Statutory Congress in New Delhi.

The meeting, which is aimed at electing the FIH president and executive board members for the next four years, will take place from May 19 to May 23.

PHF President Brig (retd) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar and PHF Secretary Asif Bajwa are expected to attend the meeting.

The officials have already applied for their visas and are expected to reach Delhi by May 22. They are also planning to hold meetings with their Indian counterparts.

Playing series against India could be a part of the PFF’s strategy, which is planning to organise bilateral series and regional tournaments in the country.

PHF President told in October that a possible Pakistan-India series will be good for the image of sports. “The two countries are at loggerheads at the moment but it will prove to be beneficial if work is done in this regard.”

Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) has also made a commitment to organise tournaments in Pakistan, Khokhar had said.
