Oscars museum delayed again as pandemic grips Los Angeles

The long-awaited opening of Los Angeles’ Oscars museum was postponed again Friday due to the pandemic, with officials saying its scheduled April debut would be “irresponsible” as the city grapples with record coronavirus cases.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, dedicated to the magic of movies and set to host iconic Hollywood treasures from Judy Garland’s “Wizard of Oz” ruby slippers to Dracula’s cape, has been beset by delays.

It had been set to finally open April 30, the week after the Academy’s flagship event — the Oscars — but will now welcome visitors from September 30.

President Bill Kramer said in a statement that the museum was “ready and eager to welcome visitors in the spring,” but “with the current surge of Covid-19, it would be irresponsible to maintain an April opening.”

“We know a new day is coming for us all, and when it does, the Academy Museum will be ready to offer our visitors the remarkable experience we have all been wanting.”

California has emerged as the latest epicenter in the US Covid-19 outbreak, reporting more than 52,000 new cases Wednesday.

Even as vaccinations began this week, intensive care units have run out of beds at multiple hospitals across southern California.

Los Angeles health officials estimate about one in 80 county residents are currently infected.

All indoor Los Angeles museums are closed due to Covid restrictions, with a regional “stay-at-home” order in effect until at least December 28.

The Oscars themselves were postponed by eight weeks to April 25, after the coronavirus pandemic shuttered movie theaters and wreaked havoc on Hollywood’s release calendar.

The futuristic Academy museum contains a 1,000-seat theater inside a seemingly-suspended glass, steel and concrete orb designed by Renzo Piano, connected by sky bridges to a converted department store housing the main galleries — and the recently installed 25-foot (7.5-meter) shark model used in “Jaws.”

“Now it’s just a matter of patience, for all of us, as we look ahead to opening our doors on September 30,” said museum chair and Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos.

Formal education policy on the cards for Pakistan: Shafqat Mahmood

ISLAMABAD, DEC 20 (DNA) – The education ministry has started formulating a formal education policy for Pakistan, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday, he said that while the government has taken a number of initiatives including a single national curriculum, an education policy “is very necessary” for Pakistan.

“So on my direction, a process has been started by the Ministry of Education which includes widespread consultation,” Mahmood said, adding that suggestions are welcome.

On June 25, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that his government is going to implement a uniform education system from March 2021. While speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, he said the 2.5 million students at religious seminaries would be brought into the mainstream.

Earlier this month, Punjab announced that a uniform curriculum in public and private schools, and madrassas.

“Now, the curriculum will be the same for the children of rich and poor,” Special Assistant to Punjab CM on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan said, adding that this system will help eliminate the rote learning system and hone the skills of the students.=DNA

Pakistan takes up reprehensible attack on UNMOGIP Observers by India with UN

DNA

ISLAMABAD, DEC 20 – Pakistan has taken up the reprehensible attack by India on the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) Observers and their vehicle along the Line of Control (LoC) with the United Nations, urging it to initiate a transparent investigation into the incident.

In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary General (UNSG) and the President of the Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that deliberate targeting of the UN Observers and their vehicle – which was clearly marked with UN logo and flying a blue flag of the UN – appears to be a new coercive and reckless ploy by India to hinder UNMOGIP’s work, and facilitate another Indian military misadventure against Pakistan.

The letter also informs the Secretary General and the UNSC that Pakistan had credible information that the RSS-BJP Government was planning to stage a ‘false flag’ attack to divert attention from its domestic difficulties, and create justification for another misadventure against Pakistan. If that were to happen, Pakistan will exercise its right to self-defence, the letter warns.

The letter from Pakistan’s Permanent Representative requests the UN to forcefully condemn the attack on the UNMOGIP Observers and call on India to observe the 2003 ceasefire understanding. The UN must respond positively and urgently to repeated calls by Pakistan to strengthen UNMOGIP and improve its ability to observe and report on ceasefire violations, the letter contends.

Pakistan has also reminded the UN that the illegal and inhuman military siege and communications lockdown in the occupied territory had now lasted for over 500 days. Highlighting the atrocities and crimes committed by Indian occupying forces against the innocent Kashmiris since August 2019, it has been forewarned that India’s ultimate plan is to change the demographic structure of IIOJK from a Muslim majority area into a Hindu majority territory.

While drawing attention to the deteriorating situation along the LoC, Pakistan’s communication recalls that India had committed over 3000 unprovoked ceasefire violations along the LoC and the Working Boundary this year alone, primarily targeting the civilian populated areas resulting in 276 casualties, including 92 women and 68 children, out of them 27 had embraced martyrdom.

Premier League: Everton’s Ancelotti relishes ‘top performance’ following Arsenal triumph

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti said that the side put on a top performance to beat Arsenal 2-1 in their Premier League fixture on Saturday.

The victory sends The Blues to second place on the points table while defending champions Liverpool registered an emphatic 7-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Ancelotti’s Everton have won their past three matches after a wobble.

“We are pleased,” said the Italian boss. “The position in the table is really good. But as I said last week it is not the end of the season, we have to keep fighting but it was a top, top performance today.”

Arsenal, without injured forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, show no sign of turning the corner after another painful defeat — their eighth of a wretched season.

Mikel Arteta’s team are in 15th place in the Premier League, already 17 points behind Liverpool, but just four points clear of the relegation zone.

Everton took the lead in the 22nd minute via a Rob Holding own goal before Nicolas Pepe sent Jordan Pickford the wrong way from the penalty spot for a 35th-minute equaliser but the home side were back in front on the stroke of half-time when Yerry Mina headed home a Gylfi Sigurdsson corner.

Arsenal, who won the FA Cup in August, have made their worst start to a top-flight season since 1974/75 and face a bleak New Year unless they can find a spark of inspiration from somewhere.

“We reacted really well,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “We dominated the game. We created enough chances at least to not lose. We hit the bar. We don’t have the luck. The boys are absolutely still fighting,” he added. “They’re hurt right now.”

Liverpool rampant

Liverpool sent a chilling warning to the rest of the Premier League as Jurgen Klopp’s champions — despite being dogged by injuries this season — are five points clear of neighbours runners up Everton after humiliating Palace at Selhurst Park.

It is the first time the Reds have won an away match in the English top flight by a margin of seven goals in their illustrious history.

Klopp’s men built on the momentum gained from their last-gasp win in the top-of-the-table clash with Tottenham in midweek. Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored twice while Takumi Minamino, Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson also found the net.

Klopp has repeatedly bemoaned the fixture scheduling that requires teams to play at Saturday lunchtime after Wednesday evening games, but his side suffered no hangover from their exertions against Spurs.

“The boys are capable of that. It will not happen every week but it can happen,” said the German. “It just clicked today. After a really intense period for the boys they should be really proud of how they came through that, results-wise.”

Victory ensured Klopp’s side will be top of the league at Christmas for a third successive season and it is difficult to see how they are going to be stopped from winning a record-equalling 20th league title.

Salah had been given a rare rest from the start, but his Japanese replacement Minamino opened the scoring in the third minute when he was teed up by Mane for his first Premier League goal.

Mane ended his longest goal drought as a Liverpool player — nine games — with an excellent turn and low finish from Firmino’s pass.

Firmino scored twice, either side of a goal from captain Jordan Henderson.

Substitute Salah moved to the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with 13 goals in as many games with a late double, including a spectacular second.

Manchester City edged past Southampton 1-0.

Pep Guardiola’s men have had an inconsistent start to the season but appear to be finding their form and saw off high-flying Southampton thanks to Raheem Sterling’s first-half strike.

In the late game Fulham, who were reduced to 10 men at St James’s Park, edged out of the relegation zone after Newcastle’s Callum Wilson scored a penalty to cancel out a Matt Ritchie own goal in a 1-1 draw.

Karachi: Three Pearl Continental restaurants sealed over SOP violations

KARACHI, DEC 20  – Three restaurants in Karachi’s Pearl Continental Hotel were sealed on Saturday night for violating the government’s coronavirus SOPs.

For restaurants, the SOPs include maintaining social distance between patrons, outdoor dining, wearing masks and closing at 10pm. The three restaurants did not close on time.

The restaurants are Chandani Restaurant, Tai Pan and Sakura.

According to South Deputy Commissioner Irshad Sodhar, there is a zero-tolerance policy against anyone not following the government’s orders. “All these restaurants sealed had allowed indoor dining despite a ban.”

Sodhar has requested residents and businesses to cooperate with the government. “Coronavirus is a dangerous disease and we should all protect ourselves and others from it,” he urged.

Sindh has so far reported 204,103 cases. In the last 24 hours, 80 people died from the virus while 2,615 new cases were reported.

Pakistan has been hit by the second wave of coronavirus, compelling the authorities to shut down educational institutions across the country and announce new restrictions to contain the spread of the virus.

In Sindh, markets and businesses are allowed to open from 6am to 6pm but must be closed on the weekends. Business centres, indoor gyms, indoor sports facilities, shrines and cinemas and theatres have been shut indefinitely.

The provincial government has also banned indoor weddings and only outdoor weddings with a maximum of 200 guests are allowed. Food at ceremonies is to be distributed in packed boxes instead of buffets.

Firdous Ashiq Awan accepts boxer Amir Khan’s challenge

LAHORE – “Bring whoever you want to, I will fight them,” Special Assistant to the Punjab Chief Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said.

During a press conference in Lahore on Sunday, she said that she wants to have a match with people who will “come up to her level”.

To this, British boxer Amir Khan, who is in Pakistan on a visit and was attending the conference, challenged the politician to defeat PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz in a boxing match.

Awan has been in the limelight on social media after a video of her breaking a stack of tiles with a single punch went viral. She was at a charity event for children with disabilities.

In an interview earlier this month, she said that she used to beat up people during her college days.

“I was afraid that I would be made fun of in front of the media if I don’t punch through [the tiles],” she said. “I don’t know Karate nor have I ever done anything like this. Of course, my knuckles were in severe pain… they aren’t made of steel after all.”

Eight killed as car bomb rocks Afghan capital

KABUL, DEC 20  – A car bomb killed eight people and wounded more than 15 others in Kabul Sunday, officials said, the latest attack to rock the Afghan capital.

Kabul has been hit by a wave of deadly violence in recent months despite the Taliban and the government engaging in peace talks to end the country’s long conflict.

Interior ministry spokesman Tariq Arian blamed “terrorists” for the attack, and said casualties included women and children.

A security source said the car bomb detonated in the west of the capital, and a health ministry official also confirmed the blast.

“It was a powerful explosion that has caused a lot of damage to houses in the vicinity,” the source said.

Television footage showed at least two cars on fire, with plumes of thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

No group has so far claimed responsibility.

The jihadist Islamic State has claimed responsibility for some of the recent attacks in the capital.

Dozens of people, mostly students, were killed when IS jihadists attacked two education centres, including one at Kabul University that saw gunmen open fire on classrooms.

The group has also claimed a series of recent rocket attacks.

On Saturday five rockets were fired at Bagram Airfield, a major US airbase north of Kabul, but there were no casualties.

That attack was also claimed by IS.

Sunday’s car bomb comes just two days after 15 children were killed and many more wounded when a motorbike laden with explosives blew up near a religious gathering in a remote part of Ghazni, officials said, blaming the Taliban.

The children had gathered to recite Koranic verses, a regular activity on the Islamic holy day of Friday.

The Taliban denied involvement and said the blast occurred when “unexploded ordnance” detonated near the children.

Violence has surged across several provinces in Afghanistan this year.

Between January and September, more than 2,100 civilians were killed and more than 3,800 wounded, according to the UN mission in Afghanistan.

Peace talks — which opened in September in the Qatari capital of Doha — are currently on a break until early January.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has called for the next round of negotiations to be held at home.

Outgoing US President Donald Trump has pushed to end America’s longest war, with Washington signing a deal with the Taliban earlier this year committing to pulling all of its troops from the country by May 2021.
