GREECE HAS NO RIGHT TO APPOINT MUFTI FOR MUSLIMS: PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN

ANKARA, APR 17 – Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Saturday condemned the latest move by Greece on appointing the chief mufti and Athens’ treatment of Turkish descendants in Western Thrace.

“Under Treaty of Lausanne, Greece has no right to appoint the chief mufti for Muslims as Turkey does not have the right to appoint the patriarch in our country,” said Erdoğan after attending the commemoration ceremony of Turkey’s late President Turgut Özal.

“Not Greek officials but our muftis and imams have the right to decide on the chief mufti in Greece,” he added.

He also criticized how Athens treated Turkish descendants living in the country, saying that “some 150,000 people of Turkish descent live in Western Thrace today, but Greece does not show them the respect those citizens deserve”.

He said Turkey has tried to fix relations by negotiating with all the Greek governments so far, but none of those efforts have borne fruit.

The election of muftis is regulated by the 1913 Treaty of Athens, a Greek-Ottoman pact that was implemented by Athens in 1920.

But in 1991, in violation of international law, Greece annulled its law regarding the treaty and unlawfully started to appoint muftis.

The muftis appointed by Greece have since usurped local Muslims’ right of jurisdiction on family and inheritance matters.

The majority of Muslim Turks in Western Thrace do not recognize muftis appointed by Greece and instead rightfully elect their muftis.

Greece, however, has refused to recognize elected muftis since 1991 and authorities have placed some clerics on trial.

Islamabad, APR 17 – The panel of constitutional experts and human rights practitioners urged the government to prioritize tabling the Bill against torture that has long been pending after the country had signed and ratified the UN Convention against Torture in 2008. They said the present government’s promise is yet to see the light.

Speaking at the condolence reference on Saturday, the participants from different walks of life paid rich tribute to I.A. Rahman, Pakistan’s internationally acclaimed human rights defender, peace guru and a seasoned journalist. They said the journey of human rights should continue in the light of I.A. Rahman’s thoughts, visions and writings.

The speakers said I.A. Rahman was the forefront leader of peace in the region through bilateral and multilateral advocacy and diplomacy based on human rights. It should continue even if the nondemocratic forces don’t like it and create hurdles against the human rights and peace campaign. He was the believer of friendship between the people of Pakistan and India in particular to propagate peaceful diplomatic relations between the governments of both countries.

The virtual commiseration was organized by the Development Communications Network (Devcom-Pakistan) and DTN to commemorate the services and work of the legend. The panel of experts included seasoned politician and former senator Farhatullah Babar, Constitutionalist and human rights expert Zafarullah Khan, Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed, gender rights expert from Lahore Dr. Khushboo Ejaz, human rights and peace activist Sadia Bokhari, visual artist and art teacher Sarwat Kazmi, and political rights activist Zulqarnain Asghar.

Farhatullah Babar asked the human rights committees of the National Assembly and Senate to have a joint session in memory of I.A. Rahman where they shall recommend to the government for conferring upon him the highest national award Nishan-e-Pakistan. He also suggested the human rights organizations to form an alliance on the deteriorating situation of human rights in Pakistan and in the region for collective efforts to combat the challenges. He also suggested that a couple of universities shall have human rights chairs after his name.

Mr. Babar said that I. A. Rahman was a person who genuinely shared his wisdom to everyone, wrote a lot about every aspect of human rights and democracy, and intentionally kept away from the rulers to maintain his integrity and intent. Mr. Rahman was consistent in pursuing and encouraging others to write about human rights, peace process and democracy.

Devcom-Pakistan Executive Director Munir Ahmed said my generation learnt everything from the iconic human rights defender, peace guru and a seasoned journalist. He continued to inspire generations for six decades. To continue the journey of his vision and wisdom, it is very essential to have his articles compiled in a book form, and another book shall be written on his efforts and lifelong struggle to inspire the next generation. He also suggested having tangible memorials in all provinces and human rights study centres at different universities after the name of I.A. Rahman. His services are milestones for the rights defenders which should be compiled and published virtually and on social media platforms too.

Zafarullah Khan said I.A Rahman started writing on human rights much earlier than the popular rights movement in Pakistan. He was the initial voice against the nondemocratic forces and dictatorial regimes. His writings unfolded the conspiracies against peace in the region that was deliberately disturbed for the vested interests of the nondemocratic forces. He believed that people-to-people contact would wipe off ethnic, religious and regional hatred.

Dr. Khushboo Ejaz said I.A. Rahman was a mentor, outspoken rights defender and blunt writer and journalist. Some universities shall have centres of excellence on human rights and peace named after I.A. Rahman. A series of lectures based on his writings and wisdom may also be launched.

Sadia Bokhari said I.A. Rahman played a mentor to her as a young journalist and groomed her for human rights when she joined the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP). He was a polite, steadfast and simple person with clarity of vision and objectives for his career and life. Professional excellence, love for humanity and peace were his goals that he achieved with all passion and dedication. He groomed and influenced his young colleagues unintentionally.

Zulqairnain Asghar mentioned that I. A. Rahman was the first person who highlighted the rights of the persons with disability and consistently wrote and propagated the challenges confronting them.

FROM RUSSIA TO BRITAIN, PHILIP’S ROYAL TIES SPANNED EUROPE

LONDON, APR 17 – Prince Philip’s life spanned a century of European history. His family ties were just as broad, with Britain’s longest-serving consort linked by blood and marriage to most of the continent’s royal houses.

“If Queen Victoria is considered the grandmother of Europe, Prince Philip is the uncle of Europe,” said Vassilis Koutsavlis, president of the Tatoi Royal Estate Friends Association.

It’s in that densely wooded estate at the foot of a mountain north of Athens that Philip’s father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, lies buried. The Tatoi estate housed the royal summer residence and the royal cemetery, dotted with the tombs of Philip’s relatives: kings and queens of Greece, princes and princesses of Denmark, grand duchesses of Russia and even a distant relative of Napoleon Bonaparte.

“At that time, it was very common to marry others in royal families. And (Denmark’s King) Christian IX was very good at it,” royalty expert Lars Hovbakke Soerensen said. “He was instrumental in getting his children married into other royal houses in Europe.”

Christian also sent one of his sons to become the monarch of Greece. The relatively new state had won its independence a few decades earlier from the Ottoman Empire, with the help of the Great Powers at the time: Britain, France and Russia.

Philip’s grandfather was just 17 years old in 1863 when the Greek National Assembly elected him king, becoming George I to take the place of the equally foreign-born but unpopular King Otto, who had been deposed.

George I married Olga Constantinova of Russia, a member of the Romanov dynasty, and together they had eight children, of which Andrew, Philip’s father, was the seventh.

Apart from one child who died in infancy, all of George and Olga’s offspring went on to marry European royals or nobles. For Andrew, that was Princess Alice, a great-granddaughter of Britain’s Queen Victoria.

“What was then important was that the royal houses needed blue blood in their veins,” Hovbakke Soerensen said.

Like the Danish king, Victoria was a well-known matchmaker, marrying her children into European monarchies. Several of her descendants still reign in Europe.

As a descendent of Christian IX and Victoria, Philip’s blood ties extend far into European royal families.

Current monarchs Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and King Harald V of Norway, as well as Spain’s King Felipe VI, are all also descendants of both Victoria and Christian.

Felipe’s Greek-by-birth mother, Queen Emeritus Sophia, was a second niece to Philip. The uncle of Queen Elizabeth’s late husband was King Constantine I of Greece — Sophia’s grandfather.

Sophia is the wife of Juan Carlos I, who was Spain’s king between 1975 and 2014 and also a distant relative of Queen Victoria.

In their telegram of condolences to Queen Elizabeth last week, Felipe and his wife Letizia of Spain started with an affectionate: “Dear Aunt Lillibet.”

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing away of our dear uncle Philip,” it continued.

In addition to being Philip’s second nephew, the brother of Sophia is Constantine, who was deposed as Greece’s king in the 1970s. He and Philip maintained strong friendly ties that included serving as godparents to members of each other’s families.

Other sitting royals related to Philip include Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Philippe, king of the Belgians.

Philip’s family fled Greece when he was still a baby, forced into exile to save the life of his father, who had been sentenced to death over actions taken during his involvement as an officer in the failed Greek military campaign against Turkey in Asia Minor. Philip’s uncle, the king, was forced to abdicate.

Philip was married to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth for more than 70 years. He will be interred on Saturday in the Royal Vault in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, far from the graves of his father and ancestors in the Greek woodland of Tatoi.

He suggested that a specialized survey should be conducted to determine the actual import share of e-liquid in Pakistan.

HOLY MONTH OF RAMAZAN SHINES IN CHINA’S XINJIANG REGION

DNA

BEIJING, Apr 17 – Despite Western sinister narrative tarnishing image of China against Islam and Muslims, Ramazan, sacred Islamic month of fasting, is blossoming in Xinjiang with its complete theoretical and practical formats as per set tenets of Islam.

According to a Gwadar Pro’s report, followers of Islam have complete freedom to do their religious performances related to prayers’ offering, observance of Sehri (fast-holding time) & Iftari (fast-breaking time), Tarawi and rest of others in the region.

The manifestation of religious independence that are relished by Muslims in Ramazan as well as throughout the year in China especially Xinjiang comes to international limelight when all Muslim states and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) acknowledge the reality that Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang are free to exercise their Islamic rights in Xinjang and other parts of China.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is “the collective voice of the Muslim world” and works to “safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world. Since March 2019 till date, OIC has taken the position in favour of Xinjiang.

After a visit to Xinjiang, it released a report on human rights for Muslim minorities that praised China for “providing care to its Muslim citizens” and looked forward to greater cooperation with the PRC.

Such unanimity in Muslim world has exposed Western falsehood on maligning Xinjiang for allegedly Muslims persecution and forbidding them exercise their rights in Ramazan.

There are more than 24,000 mosques in Xinjiang, which means a mosque for every 530 Muslims in Xinjiang. The region continues to improve the public service in mosques, which brings great convenience to the worship of religious believers.

For the convenience of Muslims, the mosques also provide tea, naan bread, fruits and other food for fasting people.

In recent years, tens of thousands of Muslims from Xinjiang have made pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia, and the customs and habits of Muslims of all ethnic groups in clothing, diets, festivals, weddings and funerals, have been fully respected.

On religion, the freedom of religious belief of people of all ethnic groups is protected in accordance with law in Xinjiang.

All normal religious activities conducted by citizens in places of religious activity or in their own homes in accordance with religious customs, like worshiping, observing Ramadan and religious festivals are protected by law and shall not be interfered with by any organization or individual.
