ASEAN LEADERS’ MEETING ON MYANMAR BEGINS IN INDONESIA

JAKARTA – The Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) leaders has begun a meeting in Indonesia on Saturday to seek a solution to the Myanmar crisis, which has killed more than 700 people since the Feb. 1 military coup.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah from Brunei Darussalam, the current chair of the regional bloc, is presiding over the meeting at the office of ASEAN Secretariat in Indonesian capital Jakarta.

Saturday’s meeting “consists of three segments, namely ASEAN community development, ASEAN external relations, and regional and international issues,” the Indonesian presidency said in a statement.

Among the participants of the meeting are the bloc’s Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi and Myanmar’s junta leader Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, as well as Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai, Philippines Foreign Minister Teodoro Locsin Jr., Laos Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen are also attending the meeting.

On Friday, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said the meeting was an initiative of the host country and a follow-up to Widodo’s talks with Hassanal last month.

At least 745 people have been killed in a military crackdown against anti-coup protesters in Myanmar, according to the latest figures released by a rights watchdog.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners said in a daily briefing late Friday that 3,371 people are in detention, 79 have been convicted and arrest warrants have been issued for at least 1,118 others.

The violence has continued despite the ASEAN leaders’ gathering to discuss the evolving situation.

Caitlyn Jenner eyeing history by contesting California governor election

Caitlyn Jenner is looking forward to make history in the United States by becoming the first transgender in United States’ history to run for office.

The Olympic champion filed her nomination papers for California governor election.

“I’m in!” the 71-year-old transgender icon and former decathlete said in a statement, adding she will formally launch her campaign — presumably as a Republican — in the coming weeks.

Jenner is the most famous non-politician to run for California governor since Hollywood legend Arnold Schwarzenegger clinched a shock victory as a Republican in the heavily Democratic state’s 2003 recall election. He served as governor for more than seven years.

Jenner’s bid is considered a longshot by experts but it comes as Gavin Newsom, a suave 53-year-old Democrat from San Francisco, faces a backlash over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, particularly his stay-at-home order that hit the state’s businesses and families hard.

California is expected to hold its second-ever recall election sometime this year, as the state’s anti-Newsom petition appears on track to secure the necessary number of signatures to trigger a recall vote.

“I am a proven winner and the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom’s disastrous time as governor,” Jenner said in the statement.

She noted how Newsom attended a now-infamous lunch last year with lobbyists at an opulent Napa Valley restaurant during a partial lockdown.

“Small businesses have been devastated because of the over-restrictive lockdown (and) an entire generation of children have lost a year of education and have been prevented from going back to school, participating in activities, or socializing with their friends,” she said.

Jenner said she planned to “turn this state around and finally clean up the damage Newsom has done.”

Jenner first found fame at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, winning a gold medal under the name Bruce Jenner before her 2015 transition.

She was previously married to Kris Jenner, the matriarch of the Kardashian family whose television show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” has been a two-decade hit.

Her transition to Caitlyn Jenner was documented by the show’s cameras and helped introduce her to a new generation of supporters.

‘Hollywood B-list’

Jenner, who has described herself in interviews as “economically conservative, socially progressive,” did not refer to the Republican Party in the statement confirming her candidacy.

Initially supportive of President Donald Trump, she penned an op-ed for the Washington Post in 2018 in which she accused him of using the trans community as “political pawns.”

“I do not support Trump,” she wrote.

But multiple US media reports said Jenner had met with veteran Republican strategists before filing her candidacy.

Steven Maviglio, press secretary to Governor Gray Davis during his loss to Schwarzenegger in 2003, said it was clear from Jenner’s immediate attacks on Newsom that “right out of the gate, she’s coming across as a conservative Republican.

“She may not say it, but it’s pretty clear where she’s going to be running from,” he told AFP.

Mainstream Republican politicians including former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer have already announced they will run for governor, in what is likely to be a fiercely crowded field.

Voters would be asked if Newsom — a Democrat — should go, and who they want to replace him if he does.

The Democratic party has largely backed Newsom, with no indications of a run against him from within the ranks so far.

But California’s low barrier to entry in recall elections means dozens or even hundreds of candidates from outside the political arena could enter, as happened in 2003.

Maviglio said: “Schwarzenegger had an image of being bold, brash and action-oriented, and that’s what voters were looking for at the time — somebody to take control, who had stature.

DARK DAY FOR PAKISTAN CRICKET: RAMIZ RAJA ON ZIMBABWE DEFEAT

LAHORE – Former Pakistan cricketer Ramiz Raja has termed Zimbabwe defeat a dark day in Pakistan’s cricket history. The Men in Green suffered a 19-run defeat in the second T20I on Friday against the 11th ranked team in the ICC rankings.

The former opener expressed his disappointment and anger over the Pakistan team’s below-par performance saying that the batsmen lack technique. “Pakistan players played reckless shots and there was no technique or partnership,” said Ramiz in video posted on his YouTube channel.

“I am shocked as to whether I should analyse this or express anger over this. This clearly is a very dark moment in our history,” he added.

Ramiz further said that Pakistan batting looked ordinary against Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani. “Muzarabani was the only quality bowler in their [Zimbabwe] lineup,” he said. “If you get a chance to watch the replays, you will see that our batting seemed so ordinary against him.”

HOPES FADE FOR INDONESIA SUBMARINE CREW AS OXYGEN DWINDLES

BALI, APR 24 (DNA) – Hopes of rescuing dozens aboard a missing Indonesian submarine faded Saturday as its oxygen reserves were believed to have run out, with the US and Australia joining the hunt in waters off Bali.

While warships, planes and hundreds of military personnel took part in a frantic search for the KRI Nanggala 402, authorities had said the German-built craft was equipped with enough oxygen for only three days after losing power.

But that deadline passed early Saturday with still no sign of the stricken vessel and its 53 crew. “There’s been no progress yet,” said Navy spokesman Julius Widjojono. “We are still combing the area.”

The submarine — one of five in Indonesia’s fleet — disappeared early Wednesday during live torpedo training exercises off the Indonesian holiday island. Despite hopes for a miracle, an oil spill spotted where the submarine is thought to have submerged pointed to possible fuel-tank damage, fanning fears of a deadly disaster.

“The oil spill is a bad sign,” said retired French vice-admiral Jean-Louis Vichot. “If it’s from the submarine, then it is probably the end.” There were concerns that the submarine could have been crushed by water pressure if it sank to depths reaching 700 metres (2,300 feet) — well below what it was built to withstand.

The vessel was scheduled to conduct the training exercises when it asked for permission to dive. It lost contact shortly after. Authorities have not offered possible explanations for the submarine’s sudden disappearance or commented on questions about whether the decades-old vessel was overloaded.

The military has said the submarine, delivered to Indonesia in 1981, was seaworthy. Neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia, as well as the United States and Australia, were among nations helping in the hunt with nearly two dozen ships deployed to scour a search zone covering about 10 square nautical miles (34 square kilometres).

Australia’s HMAS Ballarat arrived on Saturday with a US P-8 Poseidon aircraft also helping to look for the craft. Singapore’s MV Swift Rescue — a submarine rescue vessel — was expected later Saturday.

Indonesia’s military said earlier it had picked up signs of an object with high magnetism at a depth of between 50 and 100 metres (165 and 330 feet), fanning hopes of finding the submarine.

But the passing of Saturday’s oxygen deadline was likely to mean the Southeast Asian archipelago would be added to a list of countries struck by fatal submarine accidents. Among the worst was the 2000 sinking of the Kursk, the pride of Russia’s Northern Fleet.

That submarine was on manoeuvres in the Barents Sea when it sank with the loss of all 118 aboard. An inquiry found a torpedo had exploded, detonating all the others. Most of its crew died instantly but some survived for several days before suffocating.

In 2003, 70 Chinese naval officers and crew were killed, apparently suffocated, in an accident on a Ming-class submarine during exercises in 2003. Five years later, 20 people were killed by poisonous gas when a fire extinguishing system was accidentally activated on a Russian submarine being tested in the Sea of Japan.

And in 2018, authorities found the wreckage of an Argentine submarine that had gone missing a year earlier with 44 sailors aboard. = DNA
