ASAD UMAR URGES BUSINESS COMMUNITY TO ENSURE STRICT IMPLEMENTATION OF SOPS

ISLAMABAD, APR 28 (DNA) – Asad Umar, Federal Minister for Planning and Development has urged that the business community should ensure strict implementation of SOPs in markets and commercial areas in order to curb the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that the third wave of coronavirus has spread to a dangerous level and this situation demanded that the business community should play a role for strict compliance of SOPs in business areas in order to control its further outbreak.

He said that reduction in coronavirus cases would also help the government to consider easing restrictions on businesses. He expressed these views during an online meeting with Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI).

Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan apprised him of the consequences of reduced business hours and requested him to consider extending them during Ramadan. He also called upon the business community and the general public to strictly follow the Covid-19 SOPs in order to avert any lockdown that would cause great losses to the business activities, render thousands of daily wagers and workers jobless, make people lives more miserable, give further rise inflation besides badly impacting the economy. He said that the only way to curb the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic was to follow the SOPs as there was no other better solution to cope with this deadly virus.

Sardar Yasir Ilyas Khan said that due to the previous lockdowns, our economy was reported to have suffered a loss of approximately Rs.2.5 trillion while around 3 million workers lost their jobs due to which thousands of families had to suffer great difficulties. He further said due to Covid-19, Pakistan’s economy went into the negative growth for the first time last year since 1968 due to Covid-19 and the best way to save the economy and businesses from further loss was to adopt SOPs in our daily life.

He said that those countries that imposed lockdowns to control the coronavirus, provided ample relief to their businesses and the general public. However, it was not possible for a country like Pakistan to go for lockdown without putting its businesses and the people in great trouble. Therefore, he emphasized that we as a nation should learn some lessons from the previous lockdowns and ensure the complete implementation of SOPs so that we could control the spread of coronavirus, keep our businesses open, save workers from unemployment and curb inflation from further rising.

ICCI President requested all trade bodies and market associations of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and across Pakistan to come forward and play a role for strict implementation of SOPs in their respective markets and business areas. He urged them to make sure of enforcement of the policy of no mask and no entry in shops, markets, shopping malls, commercial and industrial areas.

He also appealed to the general public to contribute in their respective localities across the country for strict implementation of SOPs as together we can make Pakistan a safe country from Covid-19 pandemic and save our businesses and economy from further losses.

The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the work of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for fighting poverty, combating COVID-19 pandemic and inequalities around the world.

Recalling his recent letter addressed to Bill Gates on climate change, the Prime Minister apprised him about Pakistan’s flagship initiatives including the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami.

We’ll get you home safely, BCCI tells IPL players

NEW DELHI  , APRIL 28  : India’s cricket board, the BCCI, on Tuesday told players it will ensure their safe return home once the ongoing Twenty20 tournament is completed, in a charm offensive as the Covid-19 pandemic grips the country.

Australia’s Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson and Andrew Tye have cut short their IPL season and gone home, while India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has pulled out as the south Asian nation grapples with skyrocketing case numbers.

In a letter to players, BCCI interim CEO Hemang Amin assured players full support during and after the tournament, which is being played under biosecurity protocols and ends at the end of May.

“The BCCI will do everything to ensure that you reach your respective destinations seamlessly,” Amin wrote, according to  “Rest assured that the tournament isn’t over for BCCI till each one of you has reached your home, safe and sound.”

Vital medical supplies poured into India on Tuesday with the country’s new caseload running at well over 300,000 a day and with 2,771 deaths in the last 24 hours taking the country’s toll so far to 197,894.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said his country will not prioritise IPL players for repatriation.

“They [cricketers] have travelled there privately under those arrangements, this wasn’t part of an Australian tour,” Morrison said. “They are under their own resources and they’ll be using those resources, I’m sure, to seek to return to Australia in accordance with our own arrangements.”

Amin said the cricketers were playing for more than just the a trophy.

“As some of you have said, ‘If we can help distract people from all the troubles of recent times, even if it is for a short while, we have done a great job’,” he wrote. “If, even for a minute, you can bring a smile on someone’s face, then you have done well. While you are professionals and will play to win, this time you are also playing for something much more important… humanity.”

Meanwhile, ex-Australia Batsman Chris Lynn has requested a charter flight home for Australian players.

Lynn said he asked Cricket Australia for a charter flight when the governing body contacted players about their health and travel plans.

“I texted back that as Cricket Australia make 10 percent of every IPL contract was there a chance we could spend that money this year on a charter flight once the tournament is over?” Lynn, who plays for Mumbai Indians.

Lynn was speaking before Australia suspended flights from India until at least May 15 on Tuesday.

Highlighting the conditions in India, Australia’s David Warner posted a picture on Instagram of himself and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in blue protective suits and masks on a flight to Delhi.

“I know there are people worse off than us… We are not asking for short cuts and we signed up knowing the risks,” Lynn said. “But it would be great to get home as soon as the event is over.”

England batsman Liam Livingstone left the Royals last week, just before Britain imposed a travel clampdown on India. A handful of players tested positive before the tournament began.

The IPL has come in for media criticism, with a leading Indian newspaper group calling it ‘commercialism gone crass’ and ‘incongruous’ as it suspended coverage on Sunday.

BCCI officials were not immediately available to comment.

The IPL regular season ends on May 23, followed by playoffs and a final on May 30.

Pakistani and Chinese scholars deliberate upon ecological issues plaguing the world

BEIJING, April 28  : Pakistani and Chinese scholars deliberate upon ecological issues plaguing the world today, Gwadar Pro reported on Wednesday.

The report says, a written proposal was released on a World Earth Day themed forum anchored by the Communications University of China (CUC), where Pakistani and Chinese scholars exchanged their opinions on ecological issues.

The proposal, centered around green, healthy, and sustainable development, calls for augmented awareness of a community with shared future in international academia.

Academic Network for a Community with Shared Future, sponsor of the forum, pledges unsparing efforts in promoting dialogue among civilisations and contributing to sustainable development through joint efforts.

Pakistani representative Ms. Maryam Raza delivered a speech on “Working Together to Tackle Environmental Challenges in pursuit of Clean, Green and Resilient World”.

Noting the repercussions of non-traditional security threats on nations, she stressed the wide range of existing non-traditional security threats emanating from social, economic, and environmental risks.

Melting of glaciers, rising temperature, climate change, carbon emission, pollution, pandemics, and other wide range of environmental threats are occurring more frequently than ever. To deal with these issues, a global network is needed to apply integrated approaches.

She also highlighted new perspectives to analyze the particular discourse. As we are undergoing changes in world order, sustainable policies are required to tackle environmental challenges in modern times.

In this aspect, constructive engagement would benefit all parties involved in the pursuit of a clean, green, and resilient world.

Li Huailiang, Dean of the CUC Institute for a Community with Shared Future, proposed suggestions on global environment governance on two fronts.

First, countries should adopt a broader vision and strive for win-win benefits on the basis of mutual respect and shared responsibility. Secondly, nations should strike a balance between environmental sustainability and economic pursuit.

Instant economic reward should not be the sole guide to action. Rather, only sustainable approaches can bring long-term prosperity.

Following the forum, specific multilateral approaches to tackle global challenges including climate change were further discussed. Technology-informed trans-institutional solutions were recommended for consolidated financial and human resource capabilities.

By establishing public-private partnership, stimulating quick-to-market knowledge transition, and promoting knowledge and data sharing, governments are enabled to make use of the existing technologies to meet the needs of the people and soften the impact of the environmental crisis on people’s lives.

For this purpose, the three “R” strategy, i.e., react in the short term, resolve in the midterm and reinvent in the long term could be a potential path.

It was proposed that stepping forward, a clean energy framework for cooperation should be established; new technologies should be co-created to flight climate change; and common grounds should be sought for common commitments.

Representatives of Tanzania, Ethiopia, Germany, Malaysia, and South Korea also participated in the online international forum.

Ex SL player banned for 6 years

ISLAMABAD, Apr 28  :  Former Sri Lanka player and coach Nuwan Zoysa has been banned from all cricket for six years after an ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found him guilty of breaching the ICC

Anti-Corruption Code.

The ban for Zoysa was backdated to October 31, 2018, when he was provisionally suspended, said an ICC press release issued here.

As previously advised, following full hearings and presentations of written and oral argument, the Tribunal found Zoysa guilty of article 2.1.1 – for being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspect(s) of an International Match.

‘Article 2.1.4 – Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code

Article 2.1.

Article 2.4.4 – Failing to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or

invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct under the Code.’

Zoysa has also been charged by the ICC on behalf of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) with breaching three counts of the ECB Anti-Corruption Code for Participants for

the T10 League and these proceedings are ongoing.

The ICC General Manager, Integrity Unit Alex Marshall, said that Zoysa played 125 matches for Sri Lanka, attending a number of anti-corruption sessions during a

decade-long international career.

“In his role as a national coach, he should have acted as a role model. Instead, he became involved with a corrupter and attempted to corrupt others. Contriving to fix a game betrays the basis of sporting principles. It will not be tolerated in our sport,” he said.

Saudi crown prince says kingdom has no plans to introduce income tax

DUBAI  , APRIL 28  : Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in the remarks on Tuesday that the kingdom had no plans to introduce income tax and a decision last July to triple value-added tax to 15% was temporary.

The kingdom had tripled VAT to offset the impact of lower oil revenue on state finances in a move that had shocked citizens and businesses expecting more support from the government during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Raising VAT was a painful measure and I hate to hurt any Saudi citizen, but it is my duty to build Saudis a long-term sustainable future,” the prince said.

“Raising VAT to 15% is a temporary decision that will last one to five years and then it will go down to between 5% to 10%,” he said.

Prince Mohammed also said the kingdom aims to reduce unemployment to 11% this year. Unemployment among Saudi citizens fell to 12.6% in the fourth quarter of 2020 from 14.9% in the third quarter.

The government has been pushing through economic reforms since 2016 to create millions of jobs and reduce unemployment to 7% by 2030.

The plans were disrupted by the coronavirus crisis that sent oil prices plummeting last year.
