Coronavirus: Pakistanis aged 40-49 years old to be vaccinated from May 3

ISLAMABAD , APRIL 29  : Pakistanis falling within the 40-49 years old will be vaccinated from Monday, May 3, said National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) head Asad Umar.

The federal minister took to Twitter on Thursday to announce that more than 100,000 people had been vaccinated across Pakistan in a single day, for the second consecutive day.

“Second successive day of more than 1 lakh vaccinations. Encouraging to see pace of registration also picking up. Vaccination of those between 40 and 49 years age will be starting from next Monday the 3rd of May,” he tweeted.

On April 27, Pakistan opened the registration of the coronavirus vaccine for the 40-49 age group.

“In today’s NCOC, meeting decided to open up registration of 40 plus age citizens starting tomorrow. Also decision taken to allow walk-in vaccination of all registered citizens of 50 plus age group,” Umar had tweeted.

“If you are 40 years or older please register and encourage others to register.”

Ramiz Raja asks PCB to hold long-duration club level tournament

ISLAMABAD , APRIL 29  :   Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja has asked Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to hold a long-duration club level tournament on regular basis providing a platform for youngsters to exhibit their talent.

“Club cricket is the jugular vein of our cricket. The development [of a formidable team] which you find at the top-tier level is actually the result of club level cricket. Similarly, the lack of development at the top-tier level is also the result of [a poor] club level cricket,” Ramiz said.

He recalled that during his playing days Summer Wazir Ali League used to take place on a regular basis wherein all clubs would play against each other for almost three months.

“The standard of that league was very good. The youngsters used to get matches to play and their passion for the game used to develop a lot,” the 58-year-old Ramiz, who scored 2833 runs in 57 Tests and 5841 runs in 198 ODIs.

“I think the board will have to look into it and hold a long-duration club level tournament. You [may] start it from Lahore by engaging all the clubs.

“The step will also help [the board] see where the cricket is being played, what is the state of pitches, and in what conditions the kids are playing,” the cricketer-turned-commentator said.

Ramiz said he had always been emphasizing that the PCB should provide quality balls, bats and kits to those clubs, who were doing well. He said there was a need to encourage young players and enable them to make a way to the domestic or national teams.

According to Ramiz, his son was also playing for a club in Model Town Lahore and he kept on complaining that it was difficult to bowl even while wearing spikes as the pitches were brittle and broken quickly. “You will not learn to bat or bowl unless you play on good pitches,” he underlined.

Ramiz also asked the aspiring players not to quit the club level cricket activity. “This is a very healthy activity. Please continue it. Winning or losing [at any level] is part of the game and you need to go through from this experiment,” he remarked.

Pak vs Zim: After 8 years, Pakistan take on Zimbabwe in a Test match today

Harare , APRIL 29 : Pakistan will lock horns with Zimbabwe in the first Test match between the two sides today (Thursday) as the hosts will once again look to pull an upset over the green shirts as they did in the second T20I.

The first of the two-match Test series  will be played at the Harare Sports Club at 12:30pm today, with the two countries playing against each other in the longest format of the game after eight long years.

Pakistani skipper Babar Azam said the green shirts were not looking towards any major changes and would most likely go with the same squad that comprehensively defeated South Africa 2-0 in the Test series at home.

This means the only change will be that of Yasir Shah, who is not part of the touring Test squad. Leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood or off-spinner Sajjid Khan could easily fill in the vacant space available.

“We are in no mood to make any unnecessary changes in the team. We are planning to have one odd change in the team for the Test series opener and more interested in retaining the winning combination,” Babar said.

Zimbabwe pulled a big surprise last time both countries were seen playing the Test series in 2013, winning the opening Test and then conceding the second to draw it 1-1. The venue was the same where the Test series now will be held.

Azam expressed high hopes from the team that beat South Africa a few months ago, saying that Hassan Ali was at his best when he played against the Proteas in the last Test match, winning the Player of the Match award.

“His reentry into the Test team has given the team a fresh impetus. Hopefully, he would carry forward with the same vein during the forthcoming series,” said the Pakistani batsman.

He said left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi will be in form after having plenty of rest while all-rounder Faheem Ashraf had shown impressive skills in being a formidable Test batsman and someone who could also come in handy with the ball.

Babar said he was expecting a better playing surface during the Tests. “The Harare pitch prepared for the first Test gives a better look. There is a bit of grass on the surface and even the pitch looks firm and suitable for Test cricket. Let’s see how it will behave during the Test,” he said.

Azam said he wasn’t worried about the team’s batting, saying that Azhar Ali and Fawad Alam added depth to Pakistan’s line up with their rich experience.

“They have contributed in the past and hopefully would continue backing me and Rizwan in our efforts to raise or chase good totals in Test cricket. I hope openers Abid Ali and Imran Butt would also grasp opportunities coming their way. What I want from my players is to take up the challenge and stay there till the time they achieve that,” he said.

Nevertheless, Azam made it clear Pakistan was not taking Zimbabwe lightly, adding that the home side knows its conditions  better than the other side.

Squad

Pakistan: Abid Ali, Imran Butt, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam (captain), Fawad Alam, Mohammad Rizwan, Faheem Ashraf, Hassan Ali, Nauman Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Zahid Mehmood and Sajjad Khan.

Oman provides 10,000 jobs in first three months of 2021

MUSCAT : Oman provided almost 10,000 jobs during the first quarter of the current year.

In an interview with Oman TV, Minister of Labour Dr. Mahad bin Said bin Ali Ba’owain said: “According to the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to provide jobs for Omanis, the Ministry of Labour announced in January 2021 that 32,000 jobs would be provided to job seekers as per the implementation of the plan.”

“During the past three months, we were able to provide between 9,800 and 10,000 new jobs to Omanis.”

“About 4,000 job opportunities were given in the government sector and tests were conducted for them, and about 4,000 Omanis job seekers gained employment for the first time, while another 2,000 got other job opportunities coupled with training,” he explained.

“With this number, we have achieved in the first quarter of 2021 almost 30 per cent of the 32,000 job opportunities that were previously announced,” the minister said.

He said there are about 1,500,000 expatriates working in the country, only 10 per cent of them are replaceable, while the rest of the jobs are low paying ones where we cannot pressure employers to replace expatriates with Omanis.

“So with this 10 per cent, we can have 140,000 to 200,000 job opportunities for which we can replace expatriates with Omanis, and the replacement process involves training, qualification and experience for some jobs, so we need time to do that and we will work hard to achieve this,” the minister added, pointing out that efficiency and sincerity at work are qualities present among Omanis, but some jobs require specific expertise and skills.

“We also put pressure on the public and private sectors to replace expatriates with Omanis, and we inform them that we are ready to provide for any qualification or training required for this replacement,” he said.

SJC decides not to proceed further against Justice Isa

ISLAMABAD , APRIL 29  : The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Wednesday decided not to proceed further against Justice Qazi Faez Isa, a judge of the Supreme Court who won a case recently which set aside the court’s earlier directive to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to conduct an inquiry into three UK properties in the name of his wife and children.

The SJC, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed, decided not to pursue any further against Justice Isa in the light of the April 26 10-judge Supreme Court judgement, an informed source confided to Dawn.

By a majority of six to four, the apex court had overturned its June 19, 2020, majority order that required verification and subsequent findings by the tax authorities of the three foreign properties which, according to the now quashed reference, were not disclosed.

Consequently, the entire exercise conducted by the FBR was rendered null and void since the fresh order that came on a set of review petitions recalled and set aside the June 19 verdict that had quashed the presidential reference against Justice Faez Isa, but authorised the FBR to evaluate and later impose tax liability on Mrs Isa for possessing three properties in the United Kingdom.

Justice Umar Ata Bandial, who headed the 10-judge SC bench which had accepted the review petitions moved by Justice Isa, his wife Sarina Isa and different bar councils and associations, did not attend Wednesday’s meeting since he had already made known his intentions not to attend the session.

However, Justice Bandial was present in the second session which had taken up a different reference moved by President Dr Arif Alvi against a Sindh High Court judge, K.K. Agha, at the same time when the reference was filed against Justice Isa.

Justice Agha is also facing allegations that though he had declared his foreign properties in 2018, he failed to disclose their value and that he concealed his immovable properties in Pakistan prior to the tax year 2015 despite the fact that his annual income was over Rs1 million.

Earlier, the SJC, which was to meet on April 14, had postponed its meeting to April 28 to decide whether it should proceed afresh against Justice Faez Isa on the basis of FBR’s findings it had received on three offshore properties.

SJC Chairman Justice Gulzar Ahmed, according to the June 19, 2020, short order by a 10-judge SC bench, which had taken up a number of petitions challenging the filing of presidential reference against Justice Isa, had to lay before the council a report furnished by the FBR for consideration, action or proceedings in relation to Justice Isa.

The SJC had to take up the FBR report under which it had slapped a whopping tax penalty of Rs35 million on Sarina Isa on Sept 14, 2020, over non-declaration of the three offshore properties in her name as well as in the name of her children.

However, the SJC decided not to proceed any further after the Supreme Court’s short order which declared all the subsequent proceedings, actions, orders information and reports in pursuance of the directives issued through the June 19, 2020, verdict as well as the detailed reasons of that short order as illegal and without any legal effect.

The order had also made it clear that no forum, including the SJC, would consider or peruse any report, or order or hold proceedings or actions.

As a result of the fresh order, paragraphs four to 11 in the June 19 short order and the subsequent detailed judgement of Oct 23, 2020, were recalled.

These paragraphs were challenged by the petitioners who dubbed them superfluous, contradictory, excessive and unlawful and thus liable to be deleted from the short order.

CPEC to help increase Pakistan’s dates cultivation

ISLAMABAD, April 29 : China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will help increase Pakistan’s dates cultivation, according to a report carried by Gwadar Pro on Thursday.

The CPEC is poised to usher in a new era of trade and growth, Pakistani date growers pin their hopes on its different projects to help bring revolution in date farming.

The newly built motorways under CPEC are making the dates’ market accessible to farmers and helping them bring the latest machines and modern farming tools to their farms in remote parts of the country.

The report says, the consumption of dates, especially in its natural form, is an essential part of the Ramadan diet; dates are an unmissable part of iftar (breaking of fast) and Suhur (pre-dawn meal).

Dates are the third largest horticulture crop in Pakistan, which is found in all four provinces of the country.

Pakistan produces one of the best dates in the world and the country has the potential to become a leader in date production and export; however, due to connectivity problems, lack of suitable agricultural machinery and date processing units, the desired results have not been achieved so far.

According to the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), dates are cultivated over 99 thousand hectares of land with productions of around 540,000 tons annually.

Pakistan ranks sixth in dates’ productions in the world with over 300 date varieties in the country including Dhakki, Dhakki Dried, Shareefa, Muzawati, Kupro, Hillavi, Aseel and Rabbi Etc.

As the name Dhakki shows, these dates with exotic taste are cultivated in the Dhakki area of D.I Khan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Dhakki has established itself in national and international markets; however, market access is one of the problems that discourage farmers from growing dates on a large scale.

Hakla-D.I Khan Motorway (M-16), under CPEC, is near to its completion.2The 292-kilometer motorway will provide the farmers of Dhakki and other adjoining areas with easy access to the market.

“Motorway would bring our products to the main markets of the country,” date grower Arsalan Baloch told Gwadar Pro and he added, “Farmers would no longer be exploited to sell their products at low prices.”

According to Arsalan Baloch, the farmers would now utilize the motorway and would grow dates on all of their cultivable lands. “We would be able to frequently invite agriculture experts from Islamabad and other cities to examine our crops,” Mr. Baloch said.

Muhammad Shah, another farmer said, “Dhakki is suitable for dates’ nurseries and our saplings have demands in markets but we could not send them to distant cities due to poor conditions of roads and long journeys,” he said and he added, “We would also bring the latest machinery to use them in our farming”.

D.I Khan and its surrounding districts of southern KP also lack dates processing factories and dry dates’ warehouses.

The farmers of Dhakki are expecting dates processing units in their area in the near future. The use of fresh dates as table fruits is very common during the month of Ramadan; however, dates in dried form are also used for domestic and industrial purposes.

There are various uses of dates in the industry, like making date paste, date syrup, date powder, date juice, dates jams, date honey, bakery items etc.

The KP Government has proposed 3125-acre Daraban Special Economic Zone D.I Khan under CPEC. The farmers of the southern parts of KP expect to have industries and processing units in the special economic zones.

“Our dates and its products would be exported directly to foreign countries through the special economic zone,” Zahid Bittani, a farmer from Tank district told Gwadar Pro.

Abdul Karim Tordher, Special Assistant to CMPK on Industries said that as first priority the government would provide space to industries and food processing units that process local raw materials.

The Sukkar and Khairpur Sindh, Turbat and Panjgur are date clusters in Balochistan. Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Jhang, Bahawalpur and Multan are dates producing areas in Punjab.

CPEC’s motorways are passing through all these dates producing areas of the country, making the jobs of the farmers easy.

“Connectivity will help us increase dates farming and its yields,” Nan Lal, who deals in dates, told Gwadar Pro via phone from Sukkar.

Apple, Facebook deliver more blockbuster profits for tech

San Francisco, April 29  : Apple and Facebook delivered blockbuster profits on Wednesday in the latest sign of Big Tech’s strength as the sector faces scrutiny for its growing dominance during the pandemic.

The two Silicon Valley giants reported profits that essentially doubled, with Apple earning more than $23.6 billion and Facebook some $9.5 billion in the first three months of the year.

Apple was lifted by strong gains in sales of iPhones and assorted products and services, while Facebook saw robust increases in digital advertising, reflecting people’s rising internet usage during the ongoing pandemic.

The results followed what one analyst called a “monster” quarter for Google and its parent firm Alphabet, which with Facebook dominates online advertising, and a robust report from Microsoft, which is growing its cloud computing operations.

The latest results are likely to prompt more attention for the giant tech firms which have been able to deliver needed goods and services to locked-down consumers.

Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple are among tech titans that have thrived as the pandemic accelerated a shift to working, learning, shopping and socializing online.

“The large tech companies are in the right place at the right time,” said Darrell West, a fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Center for Technology Innovation.

“Covid has accelerated digital transformation in education, healthcare, remote work, and e-commerce and that has boosted the profitability of those firms. But there remains a backlash against the sector because people are worried about privacy, security and human safety.”

The surging influence of Big Tech firms, including Amazon, which reports earnings Thursday, has led to calls for increased regulation, higher taxes and stronger antitrust enforcement to foster more competition.

“Leaders from a variety of different perspectives want tougher action and seeing the large profits is not going to ease the tension with those companies,” said West.

– Facebook’s growth –

Facebook reported its user ranks increased despite persistent criticism over its efforts to protect user privacy and stem misinformation.

The number of people using the leading social network monthly climbed 10 percent to 2.85 billion, according to the Silicon Valley giant. And monthly usage of the “family” of Facebook apps including Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, was pegged at 3.45 billion.

Ad revenue in the quarter was driven by a 30 percent rise in price along with a 12 percent increase in the number of ads, according to Facebook.

A day earlier, Alphabet said profit in the first quarter leapt to $17.9 billion from $6.8 billion in the same period a year ago while revenues jumped 34 percent to $55.3 billion, led by gains in advertising and cloud computing services.

“Google had an absolute monster quarter with ads leading the way with an incredible 32 percent revenue improvement,” said Patrick Moorhead at Moor Insights & Strategies.

“YouTube grew an eye-watering 49 percent year over year which I attribute to increased YouTube viewing and increased YouTube TV subscribers.”

Apple meanwhile said revenue was the best ever for its fiscal second quarter, up 54 percent to $89.6 billion.

Revenue from iPhones jumped 65 percent from a year ago to $47 billion, reflecting strong demand for new iPhone 12 models.

Apple also reported gains in sales of iPads, Mac computers, wearables and accessories, and its array of services from digital payments to music.

“This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days ahead for all of us,” said chief executive Tim Cook.

“Apple is in a period of sweeping innovation across our product lineup, and we’re keeping focus on how we can help our teams and the communities where we work emerge from this pandemic into a better world.”
