Opponents of electoral reforms are becoming supporters of rigging: Governor Sarwar

LAHORE , May 5 :  Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar Wednesday said the opponents of electoral reforms are becoming supporters of rigging. He said transparent elections will strengthen democracy and parliament.

Member National Assembly (MNA) Sadaqat Ali Abbasi called on the Punjab governor. Chaudhry Sarwar said it is the incumbent government’s historic step to give the right to vote to the overseas Pakistanis.

Chaudhry Sarwar urged the opposition to end its egoistic and stubborn attitude and sit together with the government for electoral reforms. He said the government wants transparent polls so that no one could raise objection over results.

Election results will come within minutes by e-polling, he said while adding that the opposition’s politics of negating every matter is anti-democratic. Projects of the Punjab Aab-e-Pak Authority were also discussed in the meeting.

PCB-NCOC meeting to decide where remaining PSL 2021 matches will be held

ISLAMABAD , May 5  : An important meeting of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) officials around Eid will determine where the remaining matches of the PSL 2021 are held.

The matches are scheduled to be held in Karachi but concerns have been growing ever since Pakistan reported a surge in coronavirus cases and fresh restrictions on social gatherings were ramped up across the country.

An NCOC official has told that the NCOC is in constant touch with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) amid the volatile Covid-19 situation in Karachi — the host city for the remaining Pakistan Super League (PSL) VI matches in June.

“We stay in touch regularly with the PCB and all other sporting units planning to either host the events or requiring vaccination for their athletes. We are closely monitoring the whole situation. A meeting with the PCB officials is expected to be held around Eid — possibly just after the holidays to decide on the PSL VI matches scheduled in Karachi,” he said.

“No one should have any doubts that the NCOC has already started implementing the strictest of measures to stop the spread of the virus. The timely decisions are important to keep the country safe from the spread of the virus,” the official added.

The PCB had decided to host remaining matches of the league in the National Stadium of Karachi from June 1 after all franchises wrote to the PCB to do the same.

Now, it is believed that these franchises have also forwarded a request that remaining matches should now be shifted to the backup venue — UAE.

“Yes, such a request has been forwarded to the PCB and it is up to the board to decide,” one of the franchises co-owners said.

However, the PCB is in no mood to shift the tournament to the UAE. The board only has three options at its disposal at the moment; either to hold the remaining matches at the National Stadium or to shift these to a backup venue in UAE or to postpone these for when the coronavirus situation improves next year.

The second half of the current year is quite busy for the PCB as Pakistan is scheduled to play back-to-back series in the UAE, Bangladesh, West Indies besides participating in the T20 World Cup and hosting New Zealand and England.

Another reason why the PCB is not exactly thrilled at moving the venue to the UAE is that it has already booked around 300 rooms at a hotel in Karachi for PSL VI engagements and with untimely shifting to the UAE would put the board under a heavy financial burden.

PSL 6 postponed after players test positive for coronavirus

The sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was also postponed in March this year after a couple of players and officials tested positive for the virus in the bio-secure bubble.

Following a meeting with the team owners and considering the health and wellbeing of all participants is paramount, the Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to postpone the Pakistan Super League 6 with immediate effect, a statement by the PCB had read.

It said that the decision was made after seven cases were reported in the competition, which had started on February 20.

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan had held a media conference at the National Stadium to discuss the tournament’s postponement.

He had said that PCB had to put the PSL on hold as they were not “effectively” able to enforce the standard operating procedures required for a bio secure bubble.

Wasim had assured fans that the PCB will be looking for “other windows” to hold the remaining matches of the PSL 6 at a later date.

“What’s taking place right now is that we are carefully and slowly exiting players from our environment so that we can safely get them out and they can start to travel wherever they need to travel,” explained Wasim.

“It’s firmly our belief that we will find a window and finish those [remaining] matches,” the PCB CEO had said.

Therefore, it is better to take Class-10 and Class-12 exams while students of Class-9 and Class-11 are sent to the next classes without exams.

In the meeting, it was discussed that if the IBCC agreed to the proposal to conduct the 10th and 12th class examinations, then the matter would be referred to the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference for final approval, and later it would be fully implemented.

The meeting was informed that Sindh has completed its preparations for the examinations in the context of the decision of the Provincial Steering Committee, under which 50% of questions will consist of objectives while 30% short and 20% detailed answers.

Last month, Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan had announced that as per the suggestion of the NCOC, all board exams have been postponed till June 15 given the rising number of coronavirus cases in the country.

The minister and the SAPM were holding a press conference related to Cambridge exam centres as well as the overall situation of infections in the country after attending a special session of the NCOC.

Lockdown urged as India’s cases cross 20 mn

US stops all kinds of air traffic from India; Gandhi calls for complete lockdown

NEW DELHI: Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called for a nationwide lockdown as the country’s tally of coronavirus infections surged past 20 million on Tuesday, becoming the second nation after the United States to pass the grim milestone.

India’s deadly second wave of infections, the world’s biggest surge in coronavirus infections, has seen it take just over four months to add 10 million cases, versus more than 10 months for its first 10 million. Currently, the country has 3.45 million active cases.

On Tuesday, India reported 357,229 new cases over the last 24 hours, while deaths rose 3,449 for a toll of 222,408, health ministry data showed. Medical experts say actual numbers in India could be five to 10 times higher than those reported.

“The only way to stop the spread of the coronavirus now is a full lockdown […] GOI’s inaction is killing many innocent people,” Congress MP Gandhi said on Twitter, referring to the Government of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is reluctant to impose a national lockdown due to the economic fall out, yet several states have imposed various social restrictions.

The surge in cases of the highly infectious Indian variant of Covid-19 has swamped the health system, drained supplies of medical oxygen vital for survival for those infected, and seen patients dying in ambulances and carparks outside hospitals. Rows of funeral pyres in parks and carparks cremate the overflow of corpses.

India has postponed exams for trainee doctors and nurses in a desperate effort to fight the infections sweeping across the world’s second-most populous country.

Modi has been criticised for not moving sooner to limit the latest wave of infections and for letting millions of largely unmasked people attend religious festivals and crowded political rallies during March and April.

India violates ceasefire agreement after 2 months

An Indian diplomat was called to the Foreign Office to lodge a protest against the violation

ISLAMABAD: India has violated the ceasefire along the Working Boundary, the first time since the two countries agreed to restore the truce on February 25, the Foreign Office confirmed on Tuesday. The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) violated the ceasefire at the Charwa Sector of the Working Boundary on Monday, foriegn office spokesperson Zahid Hafiz Chaudhri said.

The spokesperson confirmed that the Indian Charge d’Affaires was called to the Foreign Office to lodge a protest against the violation. “The Indian side was reminded of its obligation to respect the ceasefire understanding,” he added.

But unlike the past, the foreign office tried to downplay the incident as no formal statement was issued. Instead, the spokesperson responded to media queries.

Tensions between Pakistan and India have eased considerably along the LoC after the two countries decided to honour the 2003 ceasefire understanding in February.

Since then, the LoC and the border remain calm as there has not been a single incident of ceasefire violation until the latest one.

The truce violation at the Working Boundary caused no casualties. The de-escalation in tensions were attributed to backchannel talks between the senior intelligence officials of Pakistan and India.

The backchannel talks were confirmed by a high official in a recent interaction with journalists. But retired diplomats and generals warned against being too optimistic about these contacts as New Delhi has yet to give any positive signal.
