CPEC’S WIND POWER PROJECT ANOTHER SYMBOL OF PAK-CHINA FRIENDSHIP: SUN QIANG

ISLAMABAD, May. 25 (DNA): Wind power project under CPEC is anther symbol of Pak-China friendship, says a report published by China Economic Net (CEN).

The project company belongs to a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation(CTG).

Three Gorges Second Wind Power Project, located at Jhimpir, Thatta District, Sindh Province, 90KM west from Karachi, was listed as an actively promoted project in CPEC in August 2014. Sun Qiang participated in its construction in 2016.

Back in 2016, when the plane landed at Jinnah Airport in Karachi, Sun Qiang was shocked by the backward infrastructure of the airport, and could not associate it with the decades-old Eurasian transit station. The road from the airport to the project, which passes by Pakistan’s main highway – M9, also left him a deep impression.

“There were a lot of potholes on the two-lane highway, with many damaged areas, on which you could only drive 50 to 60 miles per hour.

From the highway down to the project site, it is a completely dirt road, and it feels like crossing the Gobi Desert,” Sun said.

However, in Sun Qiang’s eyes, great changes have taken place in Pakistan’s infrastructure, be it airport, highway, or road, through the construction of CPEC in the past five years.

In 2017, Sun Qiang took a photo with nearby villagers when CTG donated provisions to them. [Photo provided by interviewee]

Building a large-scale wind power plant in a foreign country is by no means easy. When the construction of the Three Gorges First Wind Power Project started, there’s no equipment to meet the requirements, no reliable suppliers of infrastructure materials, and even no experienced local labor force in the Pakistani market.

In this case, they had to transport a large number of materials, advanced equipment and tools from China.

“Later we talked with local suppliers step by step, to help them enhance productivity, raise the standard, and produce the building materials that can meet our requirements,” Sun said, adding that “meanwhile, we Chinese experts also trained a group of capable local workers for the project.”

By the time of constructing the second wind power project, with a relatively mature market established, China-Pakistan energy cooperation in all aspects has been continuously upgraded, further promoting the sound development of the local power market.

“The project created around 800 jobs at the peak of construction. During the operational period, it still provided approximately 150 jobs, including around 40 technical positions like engineers and about 110 service positions for day-to-day operations.”Sun added.

The area where the project was located used to be rather poor, but through some social activities for public good and employment it provided, people’s livelihood has been greatly improved.

As Pakistan and China are different in culture and habits, it’s somewhat inconvenient for Chinese staff to work in Pakistan. However, the friendliness of Pakistani employees makes them get along very well.

In addition to the weekly Urdu and Chinese language courses offered by the company, Chinese and Pakistani employees would get together and hold some celebration activities on local holidays.

“The most exciting moment is that when we hear our national anthem at the construction site on our National Day. You can imagine how moved I was at that minute on a foreign soil !” Sun said.

According to Sun, now more than 80% of employees in their company are Pakistanis, with core departments headed by Pakistani staff. Besides, many of these Pakistan employees have once studied in China, and they are very supportive of the “Belt and Road”Initiative, especially CPEC.

Currently, Pakistan is facing a third wave of COVID-19 and the positivity rate has seen a sharp rise, forcing the company to continue tightening the anti-pandemic measures.

“I remember clearly that after the first confirmed case was reported in Pakistan on February 26, 2020, all the Chinese staff immediately moved from the Karachi office to the project site and all Pakistani staff was ordered to work from home,” Sun said.

At the initial time, it was difficult to carry out the anti-epidemic work since many local employees could not understand the seriousness, but Sun knew exactly what was at stake and spent a lot of time explaining to his colleagues.

Fortunately, with the full understanding and support of all staff, there has been no confirmed case in the project so far, and the project was not shut down during the epidemic, thus ensuring the continuous supply of electricity.

As this year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Pakistan, Sun Qiang said his expectation. “By building wind power project in Pakistan, we hope to help mitigate the power supply problem and contribute to the development of clean energy in Pakistan!”

A LAND OF TECHNOLOGY AND TRADITIONS

Prof. Dr Nusrat Majid

Known for its success in fields such as quality, industry, art and education, JAPAN also attracts attention with its traditional values.

Today it comes to the forefront in many areas especially science and technology and it also stands out regarding its urbanization patterns despite the volcanic texture of its land, but still holds its rich culture and tradition.

Japanese cultural distinctiveness and the manner in which it developed are instinctive to understand how Japan came to be the first non western country to attain great power status.

The arts are an important part of Japanese life. Traditional arts and crafts such as tea-ceremony, flower arrangement and dance that express Japan’s cultural heritage are greatly valued and designated as living national treasures.

Most of these colorful festivals take place mostly from spring to autumn.

Spring starts from March to late May and is the time of HANNAMI, which means cherry blossom viewing. Everyone rushes to gardens and parks to enjoy this unique national beauty.

According to Japanese belief, heroic warriors that commit suicide to protect their country, reincarnate as the cherry blossom trees bloom.

Located right outside Tokyo is the Majestic Mountain, the famous MOUNT FUJI. It is unusually symmetrical snow-capped

The cone is a well known symbol of Japan and is frequently depicted as authentic artworks. It is a famous place where many festivals are steeped in tradition and offer visitors a glimpse of Japanese culture that you won’t find in the average museums.

What makes these festivals special in Japan is the fact that many of these are perfectly preserved customs that have been passed down through the generations.

Even the holidays are traditional, like Golden Week, from 29th April to 5th May is a collection of four national holidays with 7 days in combination with well placed weekends.

On 5th May they celebrate THE BOY’S Day for the health and happiness of male children in the family it is known as TANGO NO SEKKU. It is celebrated for over a millennium.

Originally it was celebrated in the houses of warriors. It celebrated boys’ courage and strength.

Eventually the day became important to all households in Japan with boys.

Traditional food eaten on this day is KASHIWA MOCHI (rice-cake steamed with sweet beans and wrapped in oak leaf).

Another type is the rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.

To celebrate the female children, the festival called HINNA MATSURI (doll’s festival) is observed on the 3rd of March. They pray for the health, happiness and successful life of the female children of the family. It is also known as MOMO NO SEKKU (peach festival). Families display ceramic dolls dressed in ornate decorative robes of imperial court. It is a religious holiday in Japan each year.

Platforms covered with a red carpet-material are used to display a set of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor, Empress’ attendants and musicians in traditional court dress. As with all holidays, special foods and seasonal delicacies are also meticulously prepared and eaten during HINA MATSURI. The treats are beautiful and meaningful foods like, tri coloured rice-cake, coloured rice crackers, a trio of white fish tempura coated in pink, green and yellow popped rice and are topped with white foam reminiscent of snow.

So these are the most famous festivals besides cherry blossoms viewing in spring, the HANNAMI.

Punjab ACE Director General Mohammad Gohar formed the team comprising legal, technical and economic experts, according to a spokesperson for the anti-corruption department.

He said the ACE will apprise the nation about facts after the investigation. The investigation into the Ring Road project scam was launched on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar.

It is noteworthy that a fact-finding inquiry committee detected large-scale irregularities in the Rawalpindi Ring Road project. The inquiry committee formed by the Punjab government revealed that former commissioner Muhammad Mehmood made illegal changes in the actual plan of the Rawalpindi Ring Road to benefit some influential persons.

Former LAC Waseem Tabish and former government officer Abdullah were also involved in the Ring Road project scam, said the report.

On May 17, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari resigned from his public office after an inquiry into the Rawalpindi Ring Road project alleged his involvement in corrupt practices.
