Islamophobia on rise in British incumbent Govt

LONDON: Anti-Muslim feeling within Britain’s governing Conservative Party continues to be a problem at both an individual and local association level, an independent investigation concluded on Tuesday.
The center-right party has been dogged for years by accusations of Islamophobia that have been levelled against figures including Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
“Anti-Muslim sentiment remains a problem within the party. This is damaging to the party, and alienates a significant section of society,” the investigation led by Swaran Singh, a former commissioner at the Equality and Human Rights Commission, found.
The independent probe said since 2015 the “bulk” of discrimination complaints had been made over anti-Muslim allegations.
Of 1,418 complaints relating to 727 incidents of alleged discrimination, more than two-thirds of the incidents — 496 cases — related to Islam. While the report found “there were examples of anti-Muslim discrimination by individuals and groups at local association level,” it said those problems fell short of claims of “institutional racism.”

The report also found there was no evidence that complaints related to Islam are treated differently from those related to other forms of discrimination.
Incidents including a column written by Johnson before he became prime minister about Muslim women had suggested to respondents “a party and leadership that is insensitive to Muslim communities.”
In the 2018 article written in the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Johnson described Muslim women who wear the burqa as looking like “letterboxes” and “bank robbers.” He was cleared of breaking the party’s code of conduct by a separate independent panel.
Johnson told Singh’s probe he was “sorry for any offense taken” and added he would not use “some of the offending language from my past writings” now that he was prime minister.
The report also considered accusations made by the campaign of 2016 Conservative mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith claiming his Muslim Labour rival Sadiq Khan associated with extremists.
Goldsmith told the investigation the accusations showed “poor judgment in the way his campaign was conducted” and he denied “harboring anti-Muslim sentiments or using such sentiments for political advantage.”
Singh said he believed the report was “going to be very uncomfortable for the party,” adding he hoped it would “spur them into action.”-

12 Indian High Commission officials asked to quarantine

ISLAMABAD, MAY 25 (DNA) – The Foreign Office asked 12 officials of the Indian High Commission (IHC) to quarantine, after a family member of an official tested positive for Covid-19.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the officials were asked to undergo quarantine along with their family members and drivers after an official’s spouse tested positive for the coronavirus. The officials were made to undergo rapid antigen tests at their arrival at the airport.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhry said the 12 Indian High Commission officials and a group of their families had entered Pakistan through the Wagha border on May 22 where they were tested. The reports confirmed that the wife of an official had contracted the coronavirus.

The National Command Operation Centre (NCOC) reviewed the case and advised all 12 officials, including their family members and drivers, to undergo mandatory quarantine, the spokesperson added.

Under the coronavirus standard operating procedures (SOPs), India and Pakistan has decided that if an official of diplomatic staff or their family member tests positive for Covid, they will be asked to quarantine or they may be asked to return to their countries.

On May 1, the NCOC had devised protocols for the inbound passengers, imposing a condition of Covid testing at Pakistan airports and a mandatory quarantine for 10 days. In case a passenger tests positive, he will have to shift to a quarantine facility where he would be re-tested for Covid-19 after eight days. If the passenger tests positive again, he or she will have to be shifted to a hospital.

The cost of the quarantine will have to be paid by the passengers themselves.  Earlier this month, Health Director General Dr Rana Muhammad Safdar had ruled out the presence of the Indian variant of coronavirus, but also warned that it could spread to most countries, including Pakistan, if preventive measures were not taken. = DNA

SC issues notice to Shahbaz Sharif over govt’s plea against abroad travel

ISLAMABAD, MAY 25 (DNA) – Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Tuesday issued notice to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif on a plea from the federal government, challenging the Lahore High Court (LHC) decision to allow him to travel abroad.

The apex court while hearing a plea filed by the federal government directed the Lahore High Court (LHC) to submit the entire record of the case regarding the filing of the petition from Shahbaz Sharif and details into its immediate hearing.

In his remarks during today’s proceedings, Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan asked if there was a medical emergency that led to an immediate hearing into the case. To this, Attorney General Khalid Jawed Khan said that previously Shahbaz’s bail plea on medical grounds was rejected and there is no such record that he had a medical emergency.

“Even the Lahore court did not hear the government’s argument and gave a one-sided decision besides also directing to implement it,” the attorney general said. When the apex court judge asked if a person released on bail is barred from traveling abroad, the attorney general while negating it asked if a person could go directly from jail to the airport.

Khalid Jawed Khan said that Shahbaz Sharif conveyed to the LHC that his name is on the blacklist, however, if the federal government’s reply was considered during the proceeding then they would have shared a factual position in this regard. “His name is currently present on ECL,” he said during the Supreme Court proceedings. = DNA
