Norway crown princess’s son pleads not guilty to rapes as trial opens

Norway crown princess's son pleads not guilty to rapes as trial opens

OSLO, FEB 3: The son of Norway’s crown princess pleaded not guilty Tuesday to four counts of rape at the opening of a trial that has embarrassed the royal family.

Marius Borg Hoiby, Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s 29-year-old son from a relationship prior to her 2001 marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, stood and muttered a response to four counts of rape between 2018 and 2024.

Clad in green trousers and a sweater, Hoiby remained expressionless as prosecutors read out the 38 charges against him, which could see him jailed for up to 16 years.

Hoiby pleaded guilty to several of the more minor counts, including assaults, a narcotics charge, traffic offences and violations of restraining orders.

He was arrested again on Sunday evening on suspicion of assault, making threats with a knife and violating a restraining order, and was remanded in custody for four weeks.

The prosecution presented details of the alleged rapes and assaults to the packed Oslo court, while Hoiby, his head bowed, fidgeted nervously.

One of Hoiby’s alleged victims was to testify behind closed doors later Tuesday, while Hoiby is scheduled to take the stand for the first time on Wednesday.

The trial came just days after his mother was drawn into the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, after unsealed US documents revealed her apparently close friendship with the convicted sex offender, who killed himself in prison in 2019.

Flights resume to Ethiopia’s Tigray: tracking data

Flights resume to Ethiopia's Tigray: tracking data

ADDIS ABABA, FEB 3: Flights resumed to Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region on Tuesday five days after renewed conflict prompted their suspension, tracking data showed, confirming information from a local official.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that flights would resume early Tuesday.

The Flightradar platform showed that at least two aircraft had left the federal capital Addis Ababa for the Tigrayan cities of Mekele and Shire.

A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP on Monday that clashes in the region “appeared to have calmed” with no drone attacks reported that day.

Tigray was at the centre of a devastating civil war between local and federal forces in 2020-2022 that killed more than 600,000 people, and a peace deal known as the Pretoria Agreement has never fully resolved the tensions.

Fighting broke out again last week in the disputed Tselemt area of western Tigray and the Afar region to its east.

There were reports of drone and air strikes, and a humanitarian source spoke of “tens of thousands” displaced.

But verifying information has been difficult, with the government refusing to give comment on the fighting.

Flights were suspended on Thursday, with locals fearing a return to the full lockdown imposed on Tigray during the civil war.

They requested the PID to expedite the payment of outstanding dues and allocate a fair share in the quantum of advertisements for the print media. They also demanded that the regional PID offices be empowered to suggest media of their regions and authorized the clients to select the media of their choice.

The Sindh based members appraised the Executive Committee that the share in quantum of advertisements released by Sindh Govt. has been considerably reduced. Russia says no statements yet from India on halting oil purchases

Russia says no statements yet from India on halting oil purchases

MOSCOW: The Kremlin said on Tuesday it had heard no statements from India about halting purchases of Russian oil after US President Donald Trump said New Delhi had agreed to stop such purchases as part of a trade accord with Washington.

US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal on Monday with India that slashes US tariffs on Indian goods to 18% from 50% in exchange for India halting Russian oil purchases and lowering trade barriers.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was carefully analysing Trump’s remarks on relations with India.

Asked directly if India had decided to stop buying Russian oil, Peskov said: “So far, we have not heard any statements from Delhi on this issue.”

“We respect bilateral US-Indian relations,” Peskov told reporters. “But we attach no less importance to the development of an advanced strategic partnership between Russia and India.

“This is the most important thing for us,” he said, “and we intend to further develop our bilateral relations with Delhi.”

India became the top buyer of discounted Russian seaborne crude after Moscow’s war in Ukraine began in 2022. That generated a backlash among Western nations that have targeted Russia’s energy sector with sanctions aimed at curbing Moscow’s revenues to make it harder to fund the war.

PM’s relief package to strengthen export base: ICCI President

Applauds FBR for rationalizing Islamabad Property Valuation

ISLAMABAD, FEB 3 /DNA/ – The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) has highly appreciated Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif for rolling out a comprehensive relief package for industries and exporters, describing it as a timely and positive step towards reviving economic activity, restoring investor confidence and strengthening Pakistan’s export base.

Addressing a well-attended press conference, ICCI President Sardar Tahir Mehmood said that the Prime Minister announced  the relief measures, for which the press conference was convened primarily to express gratitude and acknowledgement.

He also lauded the Prime Minister and Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for reviewing and restructuring the Islamabad immovable property valuation table in line with the outcomes of extensive discussions held between ICCI leadership and FBR authorities at the FBR headquarters. He stated that this rationalization would help restore market confidence and encourage genuine investment in the real estate sector.

The ICCI President highlighted that the relief package includes a Rs. 4.04 per unit reduction in electricity tariffs, lowering of industrial wheeling charges to below Rs. 9, reduction in the Export Refinance Scheme (ERS) rate from 7.5 percent to 4.5 percent, and the issuance of blue passports to leading exporters for two years.

He termed these measures a clear reflection of the Prime Minister’s commitment to promoting trade, investment and exports, and reiterated ICCI’s full support for the government’s economic vision. He reaffirmed the Chamber’s resolve to continue acting as a bridge between the government and the private sector for ensuring economic stability and national prosperity.

Sardar Tahir Mehmood pointed out that excessive taxation and high interest rates are making Pakistan a difficult place to do business, and urged the government to rationalize these factors on an urgent basis. The ICCI President further stressed that bringing KIBOR to single digits is essential to reduce the cost of doing business and stimulate long-term investment.

He reiterated ICCI’s strong demand to declare the real estate sector as an industry, noting that it not only fulfills housing needs but also supports dozens of allied industries. He also proposed the organization of a National Real Estate Conference with participation from all key stakeholders to identify sectoral challenges and facilitate effective policymaking.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman ICCI Founder Group Sheikh Tariq Sadiq welcomed the Prime Minister’s relief package but emphasized the need for further measures to enhance industrial competitiveness and sustain economic growth.

Senior Vice President Tahir Ayub, Vice President Irfan Chaudhry, former Presidents Zubair Ahmed Malik, Mohammad Ejaz Abbasi, Executive Members Ishaq Sial, Zulqurnain Abbasi, Sanaullah Khan, Ms. Fatima Azim, Malik Mohsin Khalid, Imran Minhas, Raja Naveed Satti, and a large number of business community members were also present at the press conference.

Pakistan invited to join Iran-US de-escalation talks: report

Pakistan invited to join Iran-US de-escalation talks: report

ISLAMABAD, FEB 3: Pakistan has been invited to take part in Iran-US talks focused on easing tensions between Tehran and Washington, according to a Reuters report on Tuesday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said some of the countries invited to the talks at the foreign ministers’ level included Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The person said the format of the meetings remained unclear, but that the “main meeting” would take place on Friday and that it was important to start dialogue between the parties to avoid further escalation.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed on Tuesday that he had ordered the start of nuclear talks with the United States, after his counterpart Donald Trump threatened “bad things” if no deal was reached.

“In light of requests from friendly governments in the region to respond to the proposal by the President of the United States for negotiations….. I have instructed my Minister of Foreign Affairs, provided that a suitable environment exists — one free from threats and unreasonable expectations — to pursue fair and equitable negotiations,” Pezeshkian said in a post on X.

The talks will be held “within the framework of our national interests”, he said.

Washington dispatched an aircraft carrier group to the Middle East following anti-government protests in Iran that peaked last month.

US President Trump has said he remains hopeful that Washington will “work something out” with Iran, but warned on Monday that “bad things would happen” if no deal is reached.

Tehran has insisted it wants diplomacy while vowing an unbridled response to any aggression.

It has repeatedly stressed that talks should remain focused solely on the nuclear issue, rejecting negotiations over its missile programme or defence capabilities.

In an interview with CNN broadcast on Monday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a nuclear deal with the US was achievable.

“So I see the possibility of another talk if the US negotiation team follows what President Trump said: to come to a fair and equitable deal to ensure that there is no nuclear weapon,” he said.

“So if that is the case, I am confident that we can achieve a deal,” he added.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has warned of a “regional war” if the US attacked his country.

The priority of talks between the US and Iran this week in Istanbul is to avoid any conflict and de-escalate tensions between the two sides, a regional official told Reuters.
