Uzbek President Mirziyoyev in Islamabad for a two-day state visit

ISLAMABAD, Feb 5 President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Thursday arrived here to a red carpet welcome for a two-day state visit to Pakistan, at the invitation of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.

As the Uzbek president, accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior cabinet ministers and business leaders, landed at Nur Khan Airbase from his special aircraft, he was warmly welcomed by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar and Special Assistant to the PM Haroon Akhtar were also present.

Clad in traditional Pakistani dresses, two children presented bouquets to the guest as a 21-gun salute boomed in the backdrop to herald the arrival of the Uzbek president.

A smartly turned out contingent of the Pakistan armed forces presented a static salute and the tri-services band also delivered an impressive performance. The children attired in traditional dresses were lined up waving the flags of Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

During his stay, the Uzbek President will meet President Zardari, hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz, and address the Pakistan-Uzbekistan Business Forum.

Discussions will focus on reviewing the entire gamut of bilateral relations and identifying new avenues to further deepen cooperation in diverse sectors, including trade, energy, defence, education, people-to-people exchange and regional connectivity.

This is the second visit of Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Pakistan, which reflects the upward trajectory in Pak-Uzbek bilateral relations and the brotherly ties between the two brotherly countries, rooted in common history, faith and common aspirations for peace and prosperity in Central and South Asia.

Highest storm alert lifted in Spain, one woman missing

Barcelona, Feb 5 Spain on Thursday lifted its highest weather alert for torrential rain in the southern region of Andalusia, where a woman went missing, a day after the storm killed one in Portugal.
Storm Leonardo dumped more than 40 centimetres (15 inches) of rain in some Andalusian districts on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of thousands, paralysing rail and road transport and shutting schools.
The downpours, which came after a storm killed five people and left hundreds injured in neighbouring Portugal last week, are examples of extreme weather that scientists say climate change is worsening.
Spain’s Civil Guard told AFP a woman had fallen into the Turvilla river in the Andalusian municipality of Sayalonga on Wednesday, “and we are searching for her.”
National weather agency AEMET lowered its warning level to orange and yellow for Andalusia, saying it would rain “less intensely, although it will accumulate in already saturated areas”.
Classes resumed in most of Andalusia but remained suspended in the hardest-hit areas, with several roads and railways still out of service.
A man in his 60s died in Portugal on Wednesday after being swept away by the current while attempting to drive across a flooded area in the southeast, a spokesman for the national civil protection authority told AFP.

Undav pokes Stuttgart past Kiel into German Cup semis

Kiel, Germany, Feb 5 An unconventional Deniz Undav toe-poke put Stuttgart on track for a 3-0 win at Holstein Kiel on Wednesday and the semi-finals of the German Cup.
With Stuttgart leading 1-0 and Kiel chasing an equaliser in the dying stages, Undav set up Chris Fuehrich’s final-minute goal to put the match out of reach.
Stuttgart added another in slapstick fashion when Atakan Karazor fell in the box and squeezed the ball over the line with his hip in stoppage time.
“The conditions were very, very difficult — difficult pitch, difficult weather and an opponent who made us uncomfortable, but all that counts is we made it to the next round,” Fuehrich told ZDF.
“That was our objective, that’s what we prepared for.”
It is the third time in four seasons that Cup holders Stuttgart, winners on four occasions, have reached the semi-finals of the competition.
In subzero conditions in Germany’s frozen north, Kiel impressed against their heavily fancied opponents but were unable to make it count in a match with few clear chances for either side.
“We knew what awaited us with the cold. It was a hard game. The Kielers are used to the cold — not us,” Undav said.
With 56 minutes gone, Angelo Stiller swung in a free-kick and Undav made space in a crowded box before getting his toe to the ball, which drifted over the defence and under the crossbar.
Kiel had a late chance to level things up when Aldin Jakupovic broke free with just Stuttgart goalkeeper Alex Nuebel to beat, but scuffed his shot wide.
Fuehrich and Karazor’s late goals added Stuttgart gloss to the victory.
Winners in 2025, Stuttgart join 2024 winners Bayer Leverkusen in the final four. Next week, 2022 and 2023 winners RB Leipzig travel to 20-time champions Bayern Munich, while Hertha Berlin host Freiburg.
The draw for the semi-finals will be held in Dortmund on February 22, with the final to take place at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 23.

US, Iran to seek de-escalation in nuclear talks in Oman: regional official

US, Iran to seek de-escalation in nuclear talks in Oman: regional official

WASHINGTON, FEB 4: The United States and Iran are due to hold talks in Oman on Friday after Tehran requested a change of venue to limit negotiations to its nuclear programme, a regional official said, with a build-up of US forces in the Middle East raising fears of a confrontation.

Iran wanted the meeting to take place in Oman as a continuation of previous rounds of talks held in the Gulf Arab country on its nuclear programme, asking for a change of location from Turkiye to avoid any expansion of the discussions to issues such as Tehran’s ballistic missiles, the regional official said.

Iran has said it will not make concessions on its formidable ballistic missile programme — one of the biggest in the Middle East — calling that a red line in negotiations.

Tehran, which says it replenished its stockpile of ballistic missiles since coming under attack from Israel last year, has warned that it will unleash its missiles to defend the itself if its security is under threat.

The regional official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Iran had since the beginning stressed that it would only discuss its nuclear programme, while Washington wanted other issues on the agenda.

Oil prices extended gains on Wednesday after the US shot down an Iranian drone and armed Iranian boats approached a US-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, rekindling fears of an escalation between Washington and Tehran.

Iran sought bilateral talks
US President Donald Trump has warned that “bad things” would probably happen if a deal could not be reached, ratcheting up pressure on Iran in a standoff that has led to mutual threats of air strikes and stirred fears of a wider war.

On Tuesday, the US military shot down an Iranian drone that “aggressively” approached the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, the US military said, in an incident first reported by Reuters.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday: “We are negotiating with them right now.” He did not elaborate and declined to say where he expected talks to take place.

A source familiar with the situation said Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was due to take part in the talks, along with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

Ministers from several other countries in the region including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates had also been expected to attend, but a regional source told Reuters that Tehran wanted only bilateral talks with the US.

In June, the United States struck Iranian nuclear targets, joining in at the close of a 12-day Israeli bombing campaign.

More recently, the US navy built up forces in the region following protests against the government in Iran, the deadliest since the 1979 revolution.

Trump, who stopped short of carrying out threats to intervene, has since demanded nuclear concessions from Iran, sending a flotilla to its coast.

Iran’s leadership is increasingly worried a US strike could break its grip on power by driving an already enraged public back onto the streets, according to six current and former Iranian officials.

The priority of the diplomatic effort is to avoid conflict and de-escalate tension, a regional official told Reuters earlier.

Tanker incident
Iranian sources told Reuters last week that Trump had demanded three conditions for the resumption of talks: zero enrichment of uranium in Iran, limits on Tehran’s ballistic missile programme and an end to its support for regional proxies.

Iran has long said all three demands are unacceptable infringements of its sovereignty, but two Iranian officials told Reuters its rulers saw the ballistic missile programme, rather than uranium enrichment, as the bigger obstacle.

An Iranian official said there should not be preconditions for talks and that Iran was ready to show flexibility on uranium enrichment, which it says is for peaceful, not military purposes.

Since the US strikes in June, Tehran has said its uranium enrichment work has stopped.

In another incident on Tuesday, this one in the Strait of Hormuz, the US Central Command said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces had approached a US-flagged tanker at speed and threatened to board and seize it.

Maritime risk management group Vanguard said the Iranian boats ordered the tanker to stop its engine and prepare to be boarded. Instead, the tanker sped up and continued its voyage.
