PM Shehbaz, Sri Lankan president discuss T20 World Cup venue change

ISLAMABAD, FEB 9 /DNA/ – In a significant diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Tuesday. A key topic of discussion was the possibility of the high-profile Pakistan-India match in the upcoming T20 World Cup being played in Sri Lanka.

President Dissanayake formally extended an invitation for the marquee clash to be hosted on Sri Lankan soil. He recalled the strong support Pakistan provided to Sri Lankan cricket by continuing bilateral tours during the island nation’s challenging period with terrorism, highlighting the deep historical ties between the two countries.

Prime Minister Shehbaz warmly acknowledged the sentiments and the historic solidarity expressed by the Sri Lankan leader. He reciprocated by mentioning Sri Lanka’s unwavering support for Pakistan during its own difficult phases, including its commitment to touring Pakistan when other teams were hesitant—a gesture he termed “unforgettable” for the Pakistani people.

The Prime Minister assured President Dissanayake that Pakistan would consider the proposal regarding the World Cup fixture. He stated that a final decision would be communicated after necessary consultations on the matter.

The conversation underscored the strong sports diplomacy and enduring friendship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations.

China rejects US claims of secret nuclear tests

China rejects US claims of secret nuclear tests

BEIJING, FEB 9: China on Monday denied US allegations it had conducted secret nuclear explosive tests, calling them “outright lies” and accusing Washington of making excuses to start up its own trials.

At the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva on Friday, Thomas DiNanno, US under secretary of state for arms control accused China of conducting the tests, including one on 22nd June 2020, and of preparing for more tests with massive yields.

“The US allegations are completely groundless and are outright lies. China firmly opposes the US attempt to fabricate excuses for its own restarting of nuclear tests,” China’s ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement to AFP on Monday.

It also urged the United States to “immediately stop its irresponsible actions”.

US President Donald Trump said in October that Washington would start testing nuclear weapons “on an equal basis” with Moscow and Beijing, but without elaborating or explaining what kind of nuclear testing he wanted to resume.

DiNanno’s comments came as he was presenting a new US plan calling for three-way talks with Russia and China to set new limits on nuclear weapons, after the expiration of New START — the last treaty between top nuclear powers Washington and Moscow, which expired last Thursday.

China has already rejected joining disarmament negotiations “at this stage”.

Pakistan announces minimum Fitrana, Fidyah rates for 2026

ISLAMABAD, FEB 9: The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has announced the minimum rates for Fitrana and Fidyah for this year, setting the base amount at Rs300 per person while encouraging those who can afford more to contribute generously.

According to the council, the official syllabus for Fitrana and Fidyah has been issued ahead of Ramazan-related obligations. The announcement aims to guide the public on the correct and permissible amounts under Islamic principles.

The council emphasized that these rates are set to ensure ease for the general public while maintaining religious obligations.

Minimum amount fixed for wheat
Chairman of the council, Dr. Raghib Hussain Naeemi, said the minimum amount of Fitrana and Fidyah has been fixed at Rs300 per person based on wheat.

He clarified that this is the minimum payable amount and applies equally to Fitrana and Fidyah.

Rates for other commodities
Dr Naeemi explained that those opting to pay according to other food items should follow the specified rates. The amount has been set at Rs1,100 for barley and Rs1,600 for dates.

He further stated that Rs3,800 should be paid for raisins, while another rate mentioned by the council includes Rs1,400 under Manqah. In a separate clarification, the amount for dates was also stated as Rs5,400, as per the issued syllabus.

The chairman stressed that individuals with better financial means should pay Fitrana according to their economic status rather than limiting themselves to the minimum amount.

He noted that higher contributions help support the underprivileged more effectively and align with the spirit of charity emphasized in Islam.

Purpose of syllabus
The council said the issuance of the syllabus is intended to remove confusion and ensure uniformity across the country. The guidance helps citizens fulfill their religious duties correctly while keeping affordability and social responsibility in balance.

The council reiterated that Fitrana and Fidyah play a vital role in supporting the poor and ensuring inclusivity during Ramazan and Eid.

Russian ambassador outlines vision for deeper Pakistan ties

ISLAMABAD, FEB 9 /DNA/ – In a comprehensive address on the eve of Russia’s Diplomats’ Day, Ambassador Albert P. Khorev underscored the deep historical roots of Russian statecraft and outlined a robust vision for the future of Russia-Pakistan relations during a seminar at the Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI).

The event, titled “Legacy of Russian Diplomacy. Current State and Prospects of Russia-Pakistan Relations,” was attended by IPRI President Lt General Majid Ehsan and other distinguished guests.

A Millennium of Diplomacy

Ambassador Khorev began by tracing the origins of Russian diplomacy back to the 9th century, highlighting key milestones such as the 860 Treaty of Peace and Love with the Byzantine Empire and the formal establishment of the Ambassadorial Service in 1549. He paid tribute to historical figures who shaped Russia’s international engagement, from the strategic compromise of Alexander Nevsky during the Mongol period to the foundational work of Ivan Viskovaty.

The Ambassador detailed the contributions of several prominent foreign ministers, including:

  • Vasily Golitsyn (1682-1689): Credited with securing the “Eternal Peace” with Poland-Lithuania and the first Sino-Russian border treaty.
  • Andrei Osterman: A key architect of the Treaty of Nystad (1721), which secured Russia’s access to the Baltic Sea.
  • Alexander Gorchakov (19th Century): Famous for declaring “Russia is concentrating” and for abolishing restrictive clauses of the 1856 Paris Treaty.
  • Andrei Gromyko (1957-1985): Noted for his pivotal role in founding the UN and managing Cold War crises. Ambassador Khorev specifically highlighted Gromyko’s role in establishing diplomatic relations between the USSR and Pakistan on May 1, 1948, and the USSR’s mediation leading to the 1966 Tashkent Declaration between Pakistan and India.
  • Yevgeny Primakov (1996-1998): Associated with Russia’s turn toward a “multi-vector” foreign policy, famously exemplified by his decision to turn his plane back over the Atlantic in 1999 to protest NATO’s bombing of Yugoslavia.

A Flourishing Modern Partnership

Turning to contemporary ties, Ambassador Khorev stated that the friendship between Russia and Pakistan “is growing stronger every year.” He outlined several pillars of the current bilateral relationship:

  1. High-Level Political Dialogue: Noting two meetings between the countries’ leaders in 2025 and three between their foreign ministers, he emphasized a “dynamic and constructive” political dialogue.
  2. International Coordination: Close cooperation at the UN and SCO, with shared commitments to a multipolar world order, combating terrorism, extremism, neo-colonialism, and Islamophobia.
  3. Trade & Economic Projects: Several promising initiatives are under discussion, including:
    • Restoring the Karachi Steel Mills.
    • Launching railway connectivity via the North-South Transport Corridor.
    • Joint pharmaceutical production (including insulin).
    • Development and modernization of Pakistan’s hydropower sector and oil/gas fields.
    • Working on alternative payment mechanisms to bypass Western sanctions.
  4. Humanitarian & Educational Ties: Russia has tripled scholarships for Pakistani students to 152 for the 2025-26 academic year. Russian language centers are active, and both sides are exploring involvement in the “Russian Teacher Abroad” program.
  5. Institutional Framework: The Intergovernmental Commission (IGC), Business Council, and regular diplomatic consultations provide a solid foundation for cooperation.

The Ambassador also suggested Pakistan explore engagement with BRICS and its New Development Bank, as well as with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

A Commitment to the Future

Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Khorev reaffirmed Russia’s foreign policy priorities: upholding the UN Charter, building a multipolar world, combating neo-Nazism and neo-colonialism, and preserving historical truth. He expressed confidence in the continued growth of the Russia-Pakistan strategic partnership, stating, “We will continue working to realize the full potential of Russia-Pakistan relations.”

The seminar, which also featured an exhibition on the history of Russian diplomacy, concluded with a Q&A session.
