National judo championships postponed due to Covid-19

ISLAMABAD, Mar 18 : The 27th Men and 10th Women National Judo championships have been postponed due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country, Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF) said on Thursday.

The championships were scheduled to be held from April 9 to 12 at Qayyum Stadium Peshawar in collaboration with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Judo Association.

“Due to ongoing wave of COVID-19, our some affiliated units have conveyed their inability to continue preparation and training camps. They told us that their training venues have been closed due to a ban on sport activities.

“Although at the competition venue, regular sports activities are being conducted in normal routine, all sports activities have been seized on government’s order in the province of Punjab,” Mansoor Ahmed, secretary general PJF said in a statement.

“The PJF is of the opinion that the safety of the athletes is the foremost priority which cannot be compromised at any cost. It is therefore decided to postpone the championships. Fresh dates will be intimated as and when the situation improves,” he added.

Uzbekistan eyes Gwadar Port as gateway for seaborne cotton exports

BEIJING, March 18  : Uzbekistan, one of the world’s leading cotton exporters, sent a high-level delegation earlier this week to the Chinese-invested Gwadar Port in Pakistan to look for logistics opportunities that might help it export its cotton.

Analysts said the move highlighted the big potential demand countries have for an international public facility such as the Gwadar Port, a deep-water port that may open a coveted sea trade option for landlocked Central Asian countries.

A 16-member high-level delegation from Uzbekistan, led by Vice Minister of Railways Akmal Kamalov and the country’s Ambassador to Pakistan Oybek Arif Usmanov, visited the port a day before yesterday, according to a press release from the China Overseas Ports Holding Co, the port’s operator.

Accompanied by Gwadar Port Authority Chairman Naseer Khan Kashani and Zhang Baozhong, chairman of the China Overseas Ports Holding Co, the delegation observed the loading/offloading of cargoes by a containership operated by Chinese shipping giant COSCO Shipping Holdings. They discussed the matter of regional connectivity and the possibility of building and investing in a logistics park at the Gwadar free trade area.

On his WeChat account, Zhang noted that Uzbekistan is the world’s sixth-largest producer and second-largest exporter of cotton. He also wrote that Uzbekistan is pushing for a diplomatic move among Central Asian countries, including top-level diplomatic visits to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, for a southbound logistics corridor via the Gwadar Port.

Afghanistan has become the first landlocked Central Asian country to benefit from using the Gwadar Port in trans-shipment trade. In 2020, the country imported 43,000 tons of fertilizers via the port, contributing to its agricultural development.

The port’s dry bulk cargo business grew more than 1,100 percent to 57,000 tons in 2020 compared with 2018.

Zhou Rong, a senior research fellow at the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China, said that the Gwadar Port has the best infrastructure among all ports in the region.

“The infrastructure there is superb. Both in terms of its deep-water berths and its onshore port infrastructure, the Gwadar Port beats its peers in Iran and India,”

However, for such a southbound corridor to work, other regional countries including China and Iran will have to be involved to make an overland passage possible, given the current instability in Afghanistan, Zhou said.

Located in Pakistan’s southwest province of Balochistan, the Gwadar Port is a key project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a flagship project of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.

According to data from the US Department of Agriculture, Uzbekistan exported 503,000 tons of cotton in 2015, with Bangladesh and China as its leading destinations.

The country’s cotton exports fell in recent years due to a shrinking planting area and an increase in domestic consumption.

Tokyo Olympics ceremonies chief quits over comedian insult

Tokyo, March 18 : The creative director for Tokyo’s Olympic ceremonies will resign after making derogatory comments about a female Japanese comedian, in the latest headache for organisers of the virus-delayed Games.

Hiroshi Sasaki announced his decision after a report late Wednesday revealed he had proposed that popular plus-size entertainer Naomi Watanabe appear at the opening ceremony as a pig.

“My idea would be a huge insult to Ms Naomi Watanabe. This can’t be taken back,” he said in a statement issued early on Thursday.

“I regret this from the bottom of my heart, and I deeply apologise to her and everyone who felt discomfort over this,” he added.

Sasaki said he had spoken to Tokyo Olympic chief Seiko Hashimoto late on Wednesday to inform her he would be stepping down and would now officially submit his resignation.

Tokyo 2020 has called a press conference to address the issue later on Thursday.

A local magazine reported that Sasaki had made the suggestion involving Watanabe last year, proposing having the entertainer appear as an “Olympig” wearing pig ears.

The suggestion, made in a group chat, was immediately rejected by Sasaki’s colleagues, who told him it was inappropriate.

Sasaki was only appointed creative director for the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies last December, but was already a key figure in the various spectaculars associated with the Games.

He was initially charged with the opening and closing ceremonies for the Paralympics, but was also behind the stripped-back event that marked one year to go to the postponed Games after the coronavirus pandemic forced an unprecedented delay.

There was no immediate comment from Tokyo 2020 on Sasaki’s resignation, though Hashimoto is expected to address the issue at the press conference later Thursday.

The row comes not long after she stepped into the top role, replacing Yoshiro Mori, who resigned after saying women speak too much in meetings.

The scandals come with organisers battling public scepticism over holding the Games this year, and ahead of a key decision on whether to allow foreign fans to attend.

Olympic officials are widely expected to announce next week that overseas spectators will be barred, with limits on domestic fans still to be decided.

Organisers insist the Games can still go ahead, despite restrictions, and have released a series of rulebooks they say will ensure virus safety.

The Olympic torch relay is due to kick off on March 25, though organisers have barred spectators from the launch ceremony and first leg, with those lining the route elsewhere banned from cheering and required to wear masks.

Coronavirus claims 61 more lives, infects 3,495 people in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD : Coronavirus has claimed 61 more lives in Pakistan during the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 13,717.

According to the latest statistics of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the COVID-19 has claimed 61 more lives and 3,495 fresh infections were reported during the said period.

The total count of active cases is 24,592. The positivity ratio was recorded at 7.87 per cent during the past one day.

In the past 24 hours, as many as 1,634 patients have recovered from the virus in a day and 2,062 patients are still in critical condition including 84 new cases.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), with the fresh inclusion of the infections in the country the national tally of cases now currently stands at 615,810.

A total of 44,377 tests were conducted across the country during this period. Overall 577,501 people have recovered from the deadly disease so far while 9,648,242 samples have been tested thus far.

Amidst rising number of coronavirus cases, the Sindh government notified on Monday a string of measures, including limiting business hours and imposing smart lockdowns across the province until April 15, to halt the spread of the virus.

Yemen govt denies any blockade

Yemen, 18 March 2021 (DNA) : Govt of Yemen categorically rejects all assertions & allegations of a blockade on Yemen barring any food & commercial shipping from entering Ports of #Hodeida & #Salif. This false narrative is also refuted by records of UNVIM.

1/13

The actual problem is related to #oil shipments, and how #Houthis use those revenues to support their war efforts rather than for people, in glaring violation of its obligations under #UN agreements. 2/13

To further clarify, please note the following:

 1) In 2020, per the #Stockholm Agreement between Govt & #Houthis on #Hodeida, @UN forged an agreement for entry of oil derivative ships and process for revenues, setting up a joint account to deposit taxes & customs.

3/13

2) For #oil derivative ships, they would be under the supervision of #UN and in order to pay the salaries of government employees in #Houthi controlled areas. 4/13

3) With the implementation of the agreement, dozens of ships initially entered and deposited tax and customs revenues reaching an amount of 35 billion Yemeni riyals. However, after two months, #Houthi militias then looted these funds. 5/13

4) @OSE_Yemen indicated in his briefing to #UNSC on May 14, 2020, & April 16, 2020, #Houthis announced their “intention” to withdraw funds from a private account at the Central Bank of Yemen branch in #Hodeida. 6/13

5)

@OSE_Yemen then repeatedly requested documents required to verify the activity of this account. #Houthis have yet to respond despite many requests.  This in turn stopped the implementation of the agreement. 7/13

6) Consequently, the legitimate Govt of #Yemen was forced to pay the salaries of those working in civilian sectors of #Houthi occupied areas despite Houthis’ controlling key state resources. 8/13

7) The #UN Panel of Experts on Yemen United Nations Sanctions Committee explained in its last report that #Houthis plundered one billion eight hundred million dollars in revenues within one year and used them for their war effort. 9/13

Therefore, the problem is that #Houthis are still plundering revenues of oil derivatives and using resources to procure arms to attack civilians, and with designs to expand their control by force over entire #Yemeni people.

10/13

So how can the #Houthis claim that there is a shortage of #oil derivatives that has caused a deterioration in the #humanitarian situation and yet they carry out their large scale military campaigns? 11/13

Thus, since April 2020, even when #Houthis were receiving revenues from oil derivatives, they were not using them to pay salaries to #Yemeni employees and the #humanitarian situation has gotten worse. 12/13

And despite all intl appeals for calm and a ceasefire (which the Govt & Coalition has greatly abided by), #Houthis are escalating violence in addition to still compounding the #humanitarian crisis.

Kartarpur reflects Pak desire for peace, Raza Bashir tells webinar in Ottawa

Ottawa, 18 Mar 2021 (DNA) : Pakistan High Commissioner in Canada Mr. Raza Bashir Tarar has said that the opening of Kartarpur Corridor by the Government of Prime Minister Imran Khan is a reflection of Pakistan’s desire for peace and a goodwill gesture to the Sikh community.

He made this statement while addressing a webinar organised by Pakistan High Commission in Ottawa and the Consulate General of Pakistan in Toronto on “Tourism opportunities in Pakistan”. Mr. Abdul Hameed, Consulate General of Pakistan in Toronto moderated the session while the participants included Malik Babur Javed, Manager Publicity and Promotions PTDC, Dr. Abdul Samad, Director Archaeology and Museums, Government of KPK Pakistan, Dr. Nadeem Omar Tarar, Anthropologist and Advisor Gandhara Resource Centre Pakistan, Ms. Humaira Khan Shami, Adventure Tourism Promoter, Mr. Satwant Singh, President, Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee and Mr. Jasbir Singh Boparai, Tourism Expert.

In his introductory and concluding remarks to the webinar, High Commissioner Raza Bashir Tarar noted the love and admiration members of the Sikh community had shown for Prime Minister Imran Khan and the Government of Pakistan for opening the Kartarpur Corridor which, he said, was not a commercial venture but aimed at showing “our love to our Sikh brothers and sisters in particular and the Indian people in general that Pakistan stands for peace in the region”.

He said Pakistan had been one of the best kept secrets in terms of its tourism potential which had been irrevocably unlocked by the trains of vloggers and YouTubers through their many video testimonials which truly depicted the beauty of Pakistan and the hospitality of its people, showing to the world that Pakistan was a must-seen destination for tourists now.

He said that Pakistan despite the occasional bad press motivated by political and other reasons was a land of peace and the spread of Islam and the rise of religions such as Sikhism and Buddhism in the past showed that these historical processes were informed by a love for humanity rather than bloodletting as some historians would have us believe.

He said Pakistan was an ancient land and a cradle of civilizations. He said there were countless shrines, stupas and and seminaries and no less than 270 Sikh gurdwaras in Pakistan and the government of Pakistan was taking many initiatives to restore many of those historical places. He urged the Canadians and the tourists elsewhere in the world to look to Pakistan as their next tourist destination. He said security situation had improved manifold in Pakistan and even the United Nations which was extremely touchy about security and many of its missions had been called off because of security advisories in the past, no longer treated Islamabad as a non-family station. He countries like the UK, the US and Canada had also positively revised their advisories about Pakistan. He also referred to the positive experiences of the members of Sikh community who had visited Pakistan in recent times.

In his address, the High Commissioner welcomed suggestions and recommendations of the panelists, particularly the idea of promoting medical tourism in Pakistan, turning many Hindu and Budhist archaeological and heritage sites into living monuments and living breathing places where people could come and pay homage on a regular basis, and the marking of specific events such as the birthday of Lord Buddha. The panelists also called for production of professional documentaries along with subtitles in various languages, including Korean, Japanese and Thai languages, to take Pakistan’s religious tourism to a wider global audience.

Russia urges direct talks between Israel, Palestine

MOSCOW, MAR 17 – Russia urged Israel to renew direct talks with Palestine, aiming to establish a Palestinian state. Russia is ready to contribute to organizing a direct dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a news conference in Moscow following a meeting with his Israeli counterpart Gabi Ashkenazi.

“Special attention was paid to the situation in relations between the Arab countries and Israel. We welcome the normalization of Israel with a number of Arab states and believe that this process should contribute to a comprehensive settlement in the region, which implies a solution to the long-standing Palestinian problem,” Lavrov said.

For his part, Ashkenazi claimed Israel is building relations with the Arab countries “not instead of a settlement with the Palestinians” but to return them to the negotiating table.

“Recently, the Middle East region has been going through a period of important changes. Israel’s relations with Arab countries have been normalized, and agreements on diplomatic relations with the UAE, Morocco, and Sudan have been signed. But we are not doing all this instead of a settlement with the Palestinians, on the contrary, we are calling on the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table,” he said.

But an investigation against Israel in the International Criminal Court (ICC), initiated by Palestine, “harms the chances of a settlement with the Palestinians,” Ashkenazi said.

“We are not the ICC members — signatories of the [court’s founding treaty] Rome Statute. The ICC can only deal with the affairs of states, and we do not recognize Palestine as a state. We have our own legal system, which has its own opinion on this matter. […] Palestinians make a mistake addressing the ICC,” Ashkenazi said.

Lavrov supported Ashkenazi in his criticism against the ICC, saying Russia views the activities of this body “negatively,” stressing that this position is “principled and consistent and not limited to a particular situation.”

“When it [the ICC] was created, there was hope that it would be an independent, professional body that could become universal. The ICC disappointed these expectations. It has repeatedly demonstrated its political bias, lack of professionalism, lack of understanding of the norms of international law, made mistakes in the application of international law, and unjustifiably tried to expand its competence, contrary to what is written in its statute, invading areas that are not typical of it,” Lavrov said.

Russia refused to participate in its activities, withdrew its signature, and considers any actions taken by the court in the context of its “unpleasant reputation,” the minister said.

Israel ‘will not let Iran use Syria to attack Israel’

Asked about Israeli attacks on Syria, Gabi Ashkenazi said Israel would continue “doing everything to provide its security” and “will not let Iran use Syria to attack Israel.”

“We will not allow the Iranians to use Syria to act against us, and we will do everything necessary to ensure our security. We would be ready to somehow resolve this Iranian issue in some other way with Russia, as well as with other states, and we would be happy to do so,” the minister said.
Ashkenazi said Israel sees the way to stability in the region through halting the Iran nuclear program.

Russia expects 6th meeting of Syrian Constitutional Committee to be ‘fruitful’

Speaking about the upcoming sixth meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva, Lavrov said there was reason to believe it will be fruitful, can lead to direct contact between the delegations of the government and the opposition.

“Even now, at the preparatory stage, the various groups that participate in the committee — there are three of them — exchanging written views, which will create conditions for more productive discussions at the sixth meeting than at previous rounds of negotiations.

“And we hope that in the near future [UN envoy for Syria] Mr. [Geir] Pedersen will announce the dates of the sixth meeting, which should be held in late March or early April, before the beginning of the [Muslim] holy month of Ramadan,” he said.

Commenting on Pedersen’s idea to expand the group of mediators of the Constitutional Committee, Lavrov suggested the UN envoy present a written concept, confirming the new-comers will adhere to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and other principles of the UN [Security Council] Resolution 2254.

“Before including them [new mediators], you need to decide on what basis he [Pedersen] wants to try out this new format. Only a framework that clearly reproduces the commitment to the [UN] Resolution 2254 will do for us,” he said.
