Pakistan to promote cross-border commerce with SCO countries: MoU

BEIJING, Aug 25 : In a milestone move to promote collaboration among Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states in the digital economy, Pakistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Building a Cross-border E-commerce Platform with nine trade organisations of SCO member states.

The MoU inked at the Digital Commerce Conference of the 2021 China-SCO Forum on the Digital Economy Industry in China’s tech powerhouse of Chongqing, China Economic Net (CEN) reported on Wednesday.

Four areas of cooperation in cross-border e-commerce are highlighted in the MoU.

According to the MoU, online and offline conferences will be held to help build e-commerce platforms for international trade facilitation, digital technology exchanges and experience sharing.

Cooperation will also cover joint e-commerce talent training. The organisations will engage colleges and universities, professional training institutions, e-commerce enterprises and industry associations in cultivating e-commerce talents.

The MoU said that the organisations will draw on e-commerce to promote the production and distribution of competitive products among SCO countries, and to facilitate production and marketing by providing enterprises with overseas public warehouse, logistics, payment and other services and support to reach cooperation.

The organisations will also encourage and guide enterprises to participate in and share e-commerce developments in international exhibitions and forums on the digital economy, and draw on such platforms to create business opportunities for enterprises.

Themed “Joint e-commerce cooperation for a shared future, the Digital Commerce Conference discusses the new trends in international e-commerce and is joined by officials of SCO member states including Pakistan, and ambassadors of SCO countries in China, e-commerce enterprises and experts.

Water outflow of China’s Sanjiangyuan on the rise

XINING, Aug. 25 :Affected by factors including climate warming and humidification, the amount of water flowing out of the Sanjiangyuan area, dubbed as “Asia’s water tower,” has increased in recent years.

The amount of water outflowing from Qinghai Province, where Sanjiangyuan is located, reached 95.5 billion cubic meters in 2020, an increase of around 46.4 billion cubic meters compared with 2016.

The Sanjiangyuan (Three-River-Source) area is home to the headwaters of three major rivers — the Yangtze River, China’s longest; the Yellow River, the second-longest in the country; and the Lancang River (known as Mekong River after it flows out of China).

“Under the background of global warming, the natural environment and hydrological regime in the Sanjiangyuan area are changing,” said Li Yan, a member of a research team on the Yangtze River and an official with the hydrology and water resources measuring and reporting center of Qinghai.

A series of research into the run-off in Qinghai showed the increase in the amount of water flowing out of the Sanjiangyuan was due to the growing precipitation and melting glaciers, Li said.

Li said that the increasing outflow from the Sanjiangyuan can provide basic conditions for the construction of water supply and water diversion projects, and can also benefit residents in the downstream provinces.

“However, further research on glacier degradation and permafrost melting should be conducted to grasp the changing of the outflow in the medium and long term.”

PESHAWAR: KOICA provides USD 12 million for a safe drinking water supply system in Havelian, Abbottabad, KP Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Pakistan Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) KPK has signed a Record of Discussion (RoD) for a new grant aid project ‘Gravity Based Safe Drinking Water Supply System in Havelian, Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan’ on 24th August 2021, in Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) KPK office.

KOICA is a grant aid agency of the Korean government and has implemented various water, energy, and rural development projects in Pakistan. Mr. Yang Seokwoong, Country Director of KOICA, and Mr. Zakir Hussain Afridi, Secretary of PHED the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, signed the Record of Discussion. Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Pakistan, His Excellency Mr. Shoukat Ali Yousoufzai Minister of Labour and Culture, attended the signing ceremony.

KOICA Provides USD 12 million for the project which is expected to benefit 74,000 community people by installing a water supply system with a water treatment plant, which will allow access to safe and clean surface water. The project will lead to the reduction of waterborne diseases and nutritional improvement and improve the capacity of the Government of Pakistan to achieve SDG 6.

 To sustain the supply of safe drinking water to the Havelian people, KOICA will also support capacity building program to 15 officials of PHED KPK to ensure the operation and maintenance of the water supply system and strengthen research and policy capacity on water-related policy H.E. Mr. Suh Sangpyo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea said that Korean Government would support addressing water issues for friendship between the two countries and this project will improve people’s quality of life by improving health indicators, achieve UN SDGs, and the water supply situation.

He added that the Korean government has approved two hydropower projects of 1.5 billion USD with the KP Government and Samsung electronics will set up a mobile phone assembly line by this December which will produce around 3 million Samsung mobile phones in Pakistan. It was also said that the cooperation in agricultural technology for potato seed production and small agriculture machinery development is ongoing. He emphasized that the Korean Embassy in Pakistan would spare no efforts to facilitate the implementation of this project for successful outcomes.

Mr. Shaukat Ali Yousufzai Minister of Labour, Culture, Human Rights & Parliamentary Affairs on behalf of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa deeply thanked, the Korea International Cooperation Agency for their generous support and cooperation in the shape of grant in aid of 12 Million USD for the project.

KOICA has been continuously supporting water and sanitation projects in Pakistan, including the ongoing project for Enhancing Water Quality Monitoring System to achieve SDG 6 in Pakistan. KOICA will provide USD 7.42 million for the project which is implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Climate Change, PHED KPK, and PHED Punjab

ISLAMABAD, Aug 25 :Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Faisal Javed Khan said on Wednesday that PTI led-government was first ever, which had presented its first hundred days performance before the public.

Talking to a private news channel he said, PTI government evaluated and presented her performance before the public, so that the actual steps taken by the government could be explained.

He vowed to work aggressively to steer the country out of the crises under the leadership of the Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He said Covid-19 disturbed the entire world’s economies, but despite this challenge, the PTI government due to its prudent economic policies was on way to progress.

He said the government would launch new social welfare programmes, which would improve the living stander of common man. 

People would get benefit in terms of subsidy on edible items and universal health insurance for every family, he added.

Replying to a question he said government was making police department more efficient especially in Punjab to serve the masses in a better way.

China to boost security, anti-terror cooperation with Pakistan

BEIJING, Aug 25:Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi has said China is willing to keep close communication and coordination with Pakistan to boost

anti-terror cooperation and enhance bilateral security cooperation mechanism to maintain security and stability of the two countries and the region.

Zhao made these remarks during a virtual conversation with Moeed Yusuf, Special Assistant to Pakistani Prime Minister on National Security Division and Strategic Policy Planning, adding that China and Pakistan enjoy a rock-firm friendship, Chinese media reported on Wednesday.

Zhao hoped the Pakistani side to find out the truth of the Dasu attack, thoroughly investigate and punish the perpetrators and bring the absconding criminal suspects to justice, adding that Pakistan should reinforce security troops and measures to crack down terrorist forces in accordance with the law so as to ensure the security of Chinese nationals and programmes in Pakistan.

Yusuf, on his part, said that Pakistan would resort all strengths and means to apprehend the perpetrator and punish the terrorist forces without leniency.

Pak, Kazakh military exercises start

Opening Ceremony of Pakistan-Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise “Dostarym III” held today at National Counter Terrorism Center (NCTC), Pabbi.

The exercise is aimed to develop and bolster coordination between the two armies in counter terrorism domain. Special Forces of both countries will take part in hostage rescue, compound clearance, heli rappelling and Close Quater Battle (CQB) drills & procedures . The exercise will focus on integrated synergy, interoperability, quick decision making and swift actions at tactical level . National anthems of both countries were played at the opening ceremony. Military officials of both countries were present on the occasion. The Joint exercise is being held as part of biennial exercise mechanism between two armies . The first Joint exercise was held in 2017 in Pakistan and 2nd in 2019 in Khazakhstan

TALIBAN INVITE SOUTH KOREA TO TAP AFGHANISTAN’S MINERAL WEALTH

KABUL, AUG 24: The Taliban said Afghanistan and South Korea can mutually benefit from the war-torn country’s untapped mineral fields as the group seeks to strengthen economic ties with the East Asian nation reputed for its electronics industry.

“Afghanistan is replete with untapped mineral resources…Korea as a leading world manufacturer of electronics can work with our country based on mutual interests, where we can also serve as an economic corridor connecting South and Central Asian countries,” Abdul Qahar Balkhi said in an interview with South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.

Balkhi, a fluent English speaker, is a member of the Taliban’s Cultural Commission.

Afghanistan is rich in resources like copper, gold, oil, natural gas, uranium, bauxite, coal, iron ore, rare earths, lithium, chromium, lead, zinc, gemstones, talc, sulfur, travertine, gypsum and marble which remain unexplored due to the 20-year-long war after the US invaded the country in 2001.

The statement came amid Seoul’s efforts to evacuate some Afghans from Kabul.

South Korea’s National Security Adviser Suh Hoon told parliament that Seoul was “considering various options to provide refuge to Afghans who worked with South Koreans in Kabul, including the possibility of bringing them to Seoul.”

“We perceive this as a problem and have a national obligation to provide them with a safe haven. We are considering measures, including the option of transporting them here,” said Hoon.

Urging Seoul to “look to the future and not live in the past,” Balkhi said the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan hopes “not only to be recognized by [South] Korea but the entire world at large as the legitimate representative government of the people of Afghanistan, who have gained their right of self-determination from a foreign occupation.”

He added that the Taliban would “absolutely like to meet with the leaders and businessmen of Korea and strengthen both economic and people-to-people relations between both peoples and countries.”

In the past 20 years, South Korea has carried out various humanitarian projects, including building a general hospital in Afghanistan, the country’s Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong told South Korean lawmakers.

“There are a number of Afghans who participated or provided support in the process. The government [therefore] is mulling various ways over the option of bringing them safely to our country [if they want to come to South Korea],” he added.

Earlier, he revealed that the US had asked Seoul about using its military bases in South Korea “as a housing site for evacuees from war-torn Afghanistan.”

“It is true that [the allies] did discuss the possibility at the very basic level. It, however, was not discussed seriously,” Chung asserted.

“Currently, however, there’s no such discussion underway at all,” he added.

The US has had 28,500 of its soldiers deployed in South Korea since the 1950s inter-Korean war.

CIA chief meets Taliban leader

Washington: US Central Intelligence Agency chief William Burns held a secret meeting in Kabul with Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.

The Monday meeting, which if confirmed will have been the highest-level encounter between the group and the Biden administration since the militants’ return to power, came as efforts to evacuate thousands of people from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan became increasingly urgent.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesperson Mujahid said he “cannot confirm” if Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar met CIA chief William Burns.

Burns is one of US President Joe Biden’s most experienced diplomats; while Baradar, is one of the top leaders in the regime that has taken power in Kabul.

A spokesperson for the CIA would not confirm the meeting to AFP, saying that the agency “never discusses the director’s travels.”

The Washington Post, which cited anonymous US sources for the meeting, did not the content of the discussions between the Taliban co-founder and the CIA boss.

But it said it was likely they revolved around any delay in the deadline for the United States to finish evacuations at the airport of the Afghan capital, where thousands of Afghans, are still massed with the hope of fleeing the country.

Biden has set an August 31 deadline to finish the chaotic airlift organized by thousands of temporarily deployed US and UK troops, but has left the door open to an extension if needed.

But a spokesman for the Taliban warned Monday the hardline group would not agree to any extension, calling the issue a “red line”, with any delay viewed as “extending occupation”.
