Major power breakdown hits Karachi

KARACHI: Karachi is experiencing a major power breakdown with around 70% of the city losing electricity.

This is the third major power breakdown in the city this year, the TV said.

Several parts of the city are without power including North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, North Karachi, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Qaidabad, and Shah Faisal Town.

The power supply to Dhabeji, Gharo, and Pipri pumping stations has been suspended as well. According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, this may lead to a water shortage in the city too.

The cause of the breakdown was not immediately clear but some reports suggest that increasing demand has led to power failure as the system could not cope with the load.

The temperature rose to 40 celsius on Wednesday, according to Met Office.

The K-Electric has confirmed “reports of interruption” in a series of tweets and said it was monitoring the situation.

“We are in contact with the teams of NTDC (National Transmission and Despatch Company),” a KE spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the power breakdown was not limited to Karachi and other cities in Sindh such as Jamshoro, Matiari, and Tando Muhammad Khan have also been affected.

In Hyderabad, the electricity supply to 71 HESCO grid stations has been suspended.

Later, the Ministry of Power tweeted that the total supply to K-Electric from the National Transmission and Despatch Company has been restored.

Pakistan announces 20-player ODI squad for New Zealand series

Rawalpindi : Pakistan cricket selectors have named a 20-player squad for the three ICC Cricket World Cup Super League One-Day Internationals against New Zealand, which will be played in Rawalpindi on 17, 19 and 21 September.

Uncapped wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris, fast bowlers Mohammad Wasim and Shahnawaz Dahani, and wrist-spinner Zahid Mahmood have been named in the squad, while middle-order batters Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah have been recalled.

Iftikhar’s seventh and last ODI was against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi, while Khushdil’s only ODI appearance was also in the tied match against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi.

Players who were part of the ODI series against England in July but have failed to retain their places include Haris Sohail, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Sohaib Maqsood.

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim said the series against New Zealand is “extremely important” for Pakistan as the matches are part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 qualification.

“While we have tried to put together a formidable and balanced unit, we have continued to ensure that we give opportunities to high performing players while looking into the future so that we can develop strong bench strength,” he said.

“Shahnawaz Dahani was unfortunate to miss the selection for the England matches as the squad was announced before the start of the remaining 20 HBL PSL 6 matches. Hence, he was a straightforward selection when we sat to discuss and finalise the side for the New Zealand series. We have also given a continued run to Mohammad Wasim, who impressed everyone in the T20Is against the West Indies.”

He added that Zahid Mahmood has been added to support Usman Qadir.

“While picking him, we took into consideration that he had excelled last time he played in a white-ball match in Lahore against South Africa. Although this time the format will be different, in domestic 50-over competitions he has shown through his performances that he has the temperament to also perform in ODIs.”

He continued: “Mohammad Rizwan remains the first-choice wicketkeeper, as such, it has been decided to include 20-year-old Mohammad Haris in place of Sarfaraz Ahmed.”

This is not only to reward Haris for his outstanding domestic performances in the previous season but also to give him a taste and flair of international cricket along with its rigours and demands and to ensure that we continue to groom young wicketkeepers who are fit and ready to step up when the opportunity presents itself, he said.

“Middle-order has remained our concern and, as such, after trying a few options, we have decided to give another run to Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah, The two batters have played sufficient 50-over cricket at the domestic level and boast the required firepower to utilise the slog overs. We are optimistic they will come good in home conditions.”

“I know a few players will feel disappointed at missing out on the selection but we have a busy season of cricket ahead, which means there will be ample opportunities down the line for everyone to put up strong performances and push their case for national selection.”

With Kabul Airport Closed, Afghans Rush For The Border

Kabul : Crowds seeking to flee Afghanistan flocked to its borders while long queues formed at banks on Wednesday, as an administrative vacuum after the Taliban’s takeover left foreign donors unsure of how to respond to a looming humanitarian crisis.

Taliban focused on keeping banks, hospitals and government machinery running after the final withdrawal of US forces on Monday brought an end to a massive airlift of Afghans who had helped Western nations during the 20-year war.

With Kabul’s airport inoperable, private efforrts to help Afghans fearful of Taliban reprisals focused on arranging safe passage across the land-locked nation’s borders with Iran, Pakistan and central Asian states.

At Torkham, a local official said: “A large number of people are waiting on the Afghanistan side for the opening of the gate.”

Thousands of people also crowded at the Islam Qala border post between Afghanistan and Iran, witnesses said.

“I felt that being among Iranian security forces brought some kind of relaxation for Afghans as they entered Iran, compared with the past,” said one Afghan who was among a group of eight that crossed into Iran.

More than 123,000 people were evacuated from Kabul in the U.S.-led airlift after the Taliban seized the city in mid-August, but tens of thousands of Afghans at risk remained behind.

The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said last week that up to half a million Afghans could flee their homeland by the year’s end.

Germany alone estimates that between 10,000 and 40,000 Afghan staff still working for development organisations in Afghanistan have a right to be evacuated to Germany if they feel endangered.

The government of Uzbekistan said it would allow air transit only for Afghans who figure on a German list of those at risk, but its land border with Afghanistan remained closed.

It could take days or weeks for the Taliban to settle negotiations with Qatar and Turkey over how to run Kabul’s airport, in talks French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has said were underway.

PM IMRAN LAUNCHES EHSAAS EDUCATION STIPENDS PROGRAMME

ISLAMABAD, SEPT 1 /DNA/ – Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday launched the Ehsaas Education Stipends programme for “deserving” families so that they could send their children for education.

Addressing the launch ceremony for the programme in Islamabad, the premier said that 20 million children not going to schools was a “major issue” for the country, and regretted that due importance was not paid to their education, adding that it was important to rectify the issue.

He said a country’s biggest assets “are its people” and that not providing them education was akin to “wasting your asset”.

“By denying the opportunity for upwards [social] mobility, you do a great injustice with that segment,” he said.

The stipend initiative, the premier said, would serve to “incentivise and encourage” children to attend schools.

The prime minister particularly highlighted how more girls were out of school than boys. “We did not give importance to education but especially, and unfortunately, we did not give importance to the girls’ education,” he said.

The prime minister said that a well-educated woman was of greater benefit to the society than a well-educated man because she “teaches her kids and changes the entire system of her household [such as] health and wellbeing of children, which have a lot of societal impact”.

“The West says that we do not want to educate our girls but this is not the case. I’ve visited every region of Pakistan […] and nowhere did I go and see such households where parents wanted their girls to not study,” the he said.

PM Imran said other issues, such as ease of access, contributed more to a lack of girls’ education than the will of the parents. He identified a dearth of schools and faculty as the driving factors behind the menace.

“Parents from everywhere ask me to open schools for girls so it is not that they don’t want to educate [their daughters],” he said. “It was the government duty to facilitate them that was missing till now.”

The prime minister also praised the incorporation of information technology (IT) in the programme to ensure transparency and ward off corruption.

“Through [the use of] IT, we will attain control over most of these issues and, in a very transparent manner, [distribute] these stipends to children and incentivise them and monitor them,” he added.

Stipend kept higher for girls: PMO

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the stipend will be given to “deserving parents”, who can ensure 70 per cent attendance of their children in schools.

“In this programme, the amount of stipend has been kept especially higher for girls. School stipends are for primary, secondary and higher secondary education,” it added.

A press release said that the programme would be rolled out nationwide across all districts.

It said that at the primary level, the boys will get quarterly stipends of Rs1,500 and girls Rs2,000; at the secondary level, the boys will get Rs2,500 and girls Rs3,000; and at the higher secondary level, boys will get Rs3,500 and girls Rs 4,000. The stipends will be issued every quarter.
