‘I want results’: Ramiz Raja meets Babar Azam ahead of T20 World Cup

LAHORE: Ex-Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja, who is likely to become the new Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, met skipper Babar Azam Wednesday to discuss the team selection ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup.

Sources within the PCB told that the ex-cricketer has allowed Babar Azam the freedom to choose his team for the mega-event. However, he has also demanded results from the skipper.

“You [Babar Azam] are free to pick a team for the World Cup, whoever you want, I need results,” a source quoted him as saying. “No one will interfere in the selection matter but there will be no compromise on fitness.”

Sources said Ramiz Raja was referring to the fielding fumbles in the first Test match against the West Indies, which cost Pakistan the game and, as a result, eluded the Men in Green from winning the series.

Babar thanked Raja and promised to come up with results in the tournament, which will kick off on October 17.

Raja also discussed squads for the New Zealand series and issues related to domestic cricket with PCB chief executive officer Wasim Khan and Director High-Performance Centre Nadeem Khan, respectively.

Raja has been nominated by Prime Minister Imran Khan, patron-in-chief of the PCB, for the post. The PCB Board of Governors will meet on September 13 to elect the chairman.

Ramiz Raja begins consultations

The former cricketer and ex-Pakistan skipper had begun consultations for the implementation of his roadmap for Pakistan cricket in the days to come.

Sources had told that Ramiz Raja has contacted top PCB officials and has started giving his input, according to his proposed roadmap, to them on steps to improve Pakistan cricket.

Whatever decisions are made in the coming days will be in accordance with Ramiz Raja’s roadmap, sources in the PCB said.

If appointed, Raja will be faced with many challenges. One of the first ones will be the selection of the national team for the upcoming World Cup and a change in the team management, which he is not happy with.

Implementing the financial model of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the title sponsorship and the broadcasters’ agreement for the next three years will be some of the other hurdles in Raja’s way.

He will also have to deal with the problems associated with the National High Performance Center, domestic, school and club cricket.

Raja will have to make changes to the top floor of the PCB from his team.

Sources also said that PCB CEO Wasim Khan’s contract will not be renewed or extended. His contract expires early next year.

The sixty nine kilometers long motorway project will be completed in two years’ time under public private partnership.

The construction of this project will not only facilitate passengers but also help in transportation of goods produced in the industries of Sialkot both within the country and to the ports for exports.

Prime Minister Imran Khan will also speak on the occasion.

Veteran Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani passed away last night at his home in Srinagar, at the age of 92.

Syed Ali Gilani was born on September 29, 1929 to Syed Peer Shah Gilani of Zoori Munz village in Tehsil Bandipora.

Gilani received his early education at Sopore, and finished his studies at the Oriental College, Lahore Pakistan.

He spent his boyhood in the headquarters of Plebiscite Front at Mujahid Manzil.

President Dr Arif Alvi expressing deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of the veteran leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani, said Kashmir is deprived of a great leader who remained steadfast against the Indian imperialism all his life.

In a condolence statement, he said Ali Gilani was a brave, courageous and sincere leader. He prayed Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in eternal peace.

Prime Minister Imran Khan in a statement said, the passing of Kashmiri freedom fighter Syed Ali Gilani who struggled all his life for his people and their right to self determination, deeply saddened him.

He said Gilani suffered incarceration and torture by the occupying Indian state, but remained resolute.

The Prime Miniter said ‘we in Pakistan salute his courageous struggle and remember his words, “Hum Pakistani hain aur Pakistan hamara hai.”

He said the Pakistan flag will fly at half mast and the country will observe a day of official mourning.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said, Pakistan mourns the loss of Syed Ali Shah Gillani, the torch bearer of the Kashmir freedom movement, who fought for the rights of Kashmiris till the very end, under house arrest of Indian occupation.

Pakistan has expressed the deeply mourn on the death of the iconic leader of the Kashmiri resistance, Syed Ali Shah Gillani, who was under prolonged house arrest in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Expressing the condolence, Foreign Office Spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad in a tweet said the nation pays rich tribute to his life-long struggle for justice and freedom.

He said Ali Gillani, the true voice and hero of the Kashmiris’ struggle for self-determination, inspired three generations of Kashmiris in resisting the illegal Indian occupation and unabated tyranny.

He prayed may his soul rest in Peace, and continue to be an inspiration for those carrying his mission forward to bring to an end the illegal Indian occupation of Jammu and Kashmir.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib have expressed grief and sorrow over the sad demise of veteran Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Gillani.

In his video message the Information Minister said the sad news of Gillani’s death has shocked and saddened the people of Kashmir as well as Pakistan.

He said the candle to fight against Indian tyranny lit by Syed Ali Gillani in Kashmir would continue till winning independence.

In a statement, he said the death of Syed Ali Gillani has deprived Kashmiri people of a great Hurriyat leader. The Naval Chief said Syed Ali Gillani was a shining star of Kashmiri freedom movement. He said his sacrifices for the freedom movement will always be remembered.

89 More Pakistanis Die Of Covid-19 During Past 24 Hours

ISLAMABAD: COVID-19 has claimed 89 more lives in Pakistan during the last 24 hours, pushing the nationwide tally of fatalities to 25,978.

According to the latest figures issued by the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC), 4,103 persons tested positive for COVID-19, lifting the overall number of infections in the country to 1,167,791.

Pakistan has conducted 61,651 tests in the past 24 hours out of which 4,103 persons tested positive for the disease. The COVID Positivity ratio was recorded at 6.65% during the past 24 hours as compared to yesterday’s 6.63 per cent.

The NCOC said 4,717 people are in critical condition.

So far, a total of 56,768,446 vaccine doses have been administered to the masses across the country.

Out of 56,768,446, the number of fully vaccinated people against the coronavirus is 17,455,249, while 43,791,885 partial doses have been administered to date.

On Wednesday, National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) head Asad Umar had announced that 40 percent eligible population in 20 cities of the country had been vaccinated against COVID-19 as total vaccination in the country stands at 35 percent of the eligible population.

Taliban set to name Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada as Afghanistan’ supreme leader: NYT

NEW YORK: The Taliban are close to forming their government, naming Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada,  as the country’s supreme authority, The New York Times reported Wednesday, citing a Taliban official.

The announcement, which will also lay out key appointments to the communications and interior ministries, may come as soon as Thursday, the Times said, citing the official who requested anonymity.

According to interviews with Taliban and other sources in Kabul and Kandahar, the newspaper said that Sheikh Haibatullah would be the supreme authority of the new Islamic government, with a theocratic role similar to that of the Iran’s supreme leader.

Sheikh Haibatullah has been meeting with other leadership figures in Kandahar this week.

Bloomberg News, citing Bilal Karimi, a member of the Taliban’s cultural commission, also reported on the plans for the new government, including Sheikh Haibatullah’s new role.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a co-founder of the Taliban who has served as the group’s deputy leader in recent years, was expected to be in charge of day-to-day affairs as head of government, it said.

Baradar acted as the chief negotiator for the group in peace talks with the United States in Qatar, presiding over the agreement that cleared the way for the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Other key positions in the government, according to the Times,  are expected to go to Sirajuddin Haqqani, another deputy and an influential operations leader within the movement, and Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob, who is the son of the Taliban movement’s founder, Mullah Muhammad Omar.

Still unclear was the role of a leadership shura or council, and whether its membership would fulfill the Taliban’s promise of building an inclusive government, the paper said. The question also remains of whether leaders from previous governments, such as Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah, who have remained in Kabul for talks, will be included.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan High Commissioner Designate to Canada Ameer Khurram Rathore has said that the Government of Pakistan is striving to put Pakistan on the road to a speedy economic recovery and the role of overseas Pakistanis in achieving that goal is of paramount importance. 

He said this while talking to a public forum-cum-e-katchehry arranged by the Pakistan High Commission Ottawa and the Consulate Generals of Pakistan in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

During the session, various issues including promotion of bilateral commerce and trade, NICOP related problems, civil status documents, the support of Pakistan for managing anti-dumping issues at the WTO level, display of information on website, Roshan Digital Accounts, periodic biometric verifications, promotion of brand Pakistan were discussed. Consul General of Pakistan Toronto Abdul Hameed, Consul General of Pakistan Vancouver Janbaz Khan and Consul General of Pakistan Montreal Ishtiaq Akil answered the questions raised by the community members. Earlier, addressing the forum Ameer Khurram Rathore said that he was looking forward to an enhanced engagement with the Pakistani diaspora in Canada as this was the major message impressed upon him by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi during a meeting before his departure for Canada. 

The High Commissioner Designate said he would extensively interact with the community in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and other parts of Canada in coming days and weeks to consult them and take their feedback and suggestions for further enhancing bilateral ties between Pakistan and Canada as well as bilateral trade, cultural exchanges, and tourism in Pakistan. He also urged the community members to give their suggestions on how the ekatchehry’s format could be further improved to enhance its scope and outreach and allow an easy and greater participation of Pakistani Canadians in its future sessions.

Gen Nadeem lauds efforts of Pakistan Navy for conducting exercises

RAWALPINDI, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Nadeem Raza said that the war game exercise would promote coordination and greater interoperability amongst all services, thus offsetting any physical threat to territorial integrity.

The CJCSC on Wednesday attended the de-briefing session of war game “SHAMSHEER-E-BAHR-VIII” as Chief Guest at Pakistan Naval Ship Base Jauhar, Karachi where he was given a detailed briefing on the aim and objectives of the exercise, said an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) media release here received.

This exercise was aimed at tri-services operational drills and maneuvers against traditional and non-traditional threats with emphasis on improving synergy and jointness in operations at sea in a diverse maritime environment.

Speaking on the occasion, CJCSC highlighted the importance of war games in reviewing military strategy and refining its alignment with national security threats while exploring new concepts.

Chairman JCSC lauded the participants and appreciated the efforts of Pakistan Navy in conducting the successful exercise in a befitting manner.

Earlier, upon arrival Chairman JCSC was received by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi.

PTV’s Cynthia Ritchie tweet leaves people scratching their heads

The Pakistan Television left many people scratching their heads after it announced that American blogger Cynthia Ritchie had joined PTV World but then deleted the tweet shortly afterwards.

“Writer and filmmaker Cynthia Ritchie has joined Pakistan Television Network and will be conducting a programme on PTV World in the near future,” PTV tweeted. 

The announcement spread like wildfire on social media and received mixed reactions. Some people congratulated the blogger on her new job and others disapproved of it. A few even called Cynthia’s employment at the state television a joke.

But the tweet was taken down shortly afterwards for unknown reasons. When SAMAA Digital reached out, sources from PTV revealed that the announcement was deleted because it was tweeted “in haste”. Although Cynthia has joined the state television and will soon be hosting a magazine show for PTV World, some “technical issues” have yet to be resolved. It is unclear whether Cynthia will host one or two episodes a week.

Cynthia made headlines last year when she accused former interior minister Rehman Malik of raping her in 2011. 

“I was raped by the former interior minister Rehman Malik,” Ritchie said in a video on June 5, 2020. She has accused former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani of “physically manhandling” her while he was staying at President House.

The PPP leaders had denied the allegations. In January 2021, both Cynthia and Malik withdrew their applications against each other.

Cynthia is known for her travelogues and has often been seen sharing her analysis on various issues on talk shows. She came to Pakistan in 2010 and has reportedly visited Pakistan over 50 times. 

Some media reports suggest that Cynthia first came to Pakistan on November 9, 2009, and had left after a three-day visit in Karachi. Cynthia is said to be working on a documentary on Pakistan as well.
