MYANMAR JUNTA SAYS PROTESTS AGAINST ITS RULE ARE DWINDLING

Myanmar’s military junta said on Friday that a protest campaign against its rule was dwindling since people wanted peace while 18 ambassadors to the country called in a joint statement for the restoration of democracy.

Government ministries will resume full operations soon, junta spokesman Brigadier Zaw Min Tun told a news conference in the capital, Naypyitaw.

More than 600 people have been killed by security forces cracking down on protests against the Feb. 1 coup in which the military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. The Southeast Asian nation has ground to a standstill because of the protest campaign and widespread strikes against military rule.

“The reason of reducing protests is due to cooperation of people who want peace, which we value”, Zaw Min Tun said.

“We request people to cooperate with security forces and help them.”

In the latest violence, at least four demonstrators were killed by security forces on Friday in the town of Bago, near the main city of Yangon, witnesses and domestic media said.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) activist group has said 614 people, including 48 children, have been killed by security forces since the coup. Over 2,800 were in detention, it said.

“We are humbled by their courage and dignity,” the ambassadors said of the protesters in their statement.

“We stand together to support the hopes and aspirations of all those who believe in a free, just, peaceful and democratic Myanmar. Violence has to stop, all political detainees must be released and democracy must be restored.”

The statement was signed by the ambassadors of the United States, Britain, the EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland and several European nations.

Zaw Min Tun said at least 16 policemen had been killed. He accused members of Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy of arson and said the protest campaign was being financed by foreign money. He gave no details.

He said reports that some members of the international community did not recognise the military government were “fake news”.

“We are cooperating with foreign countries and working together with neighbouring countries,” the spokesman said.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1983, the bilateral ties between the two countries have been enlarged substantially in the areas of trade, investment, human exchange and development cooperation. 2021 Manchester Open postponed until June

ISLAMABAD, Apr 09  : The 2021 Manchester Open, originally scheduled for April 19-25, has been postponed until June as part of an update to the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour provisional calendar for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

The PSA World Tour Silver tournament – which would see 64 of the world’s best male and female players line up at Manchester’s National Squash Centre – will now take place in one of the first two weeks of June, taking the spot of the Necker Mauritius Open 2021 presented by Beachcomber, which will move to October of this year due to the fact that the Mauritius borders will remain closed for international travel until at least June, said a press release issued here.

The decision to postpone the Manchester Open until June was to ensure that there is a greater chance of the event being permitted to allow spectators into the venue as per the current UK government guidelines, while it will also help safeguard against the impact of COVID-19 on international travel.

In line with the UK government National Health Service (NHS) Test and Trace system – which has been revised and tightened in the last few weeks – athletes traveling internationally to compete at an elite sports event in England now run an increased risk of being notified of ‘close contact’ with a person traveling on their plane who has since tested positive for COVID-19, which means the affected player would have to self-isolate for 10 days.

This means that there was currently the real potential for a number of late or in-competition withdrawals, which compromises the integrity of the competition and has the potential to place additional strain on the health and wellbeing of athletes who could be forced to self-isolate by the NHS despite operating in a secure ‘event bubble’ and undergoing periodic COVID-19 tests.

Event organisers, Manchester City Council and the PSA agree that it would therefore be beneficial to postpone the tournament to June and all parties will work together closely in the coming months to ensure the successful delivery of the tournament.

An update containing confirmed dates for the Manchester Open will be issued later this month.

PSA Chief Executive Alex Gough postponing the tournament would help us to work with the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Public Health England (PHE) and other relevant governmental departments to find a suitable solution to the current NHS Test and Trace system which has the potential to severely affect elite sporting events being held in England.

“Throughout this entire pandemic our priority has always been the safety of our players and staff, and we understand the importance of following the health protocols put in place by the UK Government to manage any risk of further transmission of the virus,” he said.

Change takes time, says PM Imran Khan

LAHORE , APRIL 09  : Prime Minister Imran Khan has called upon the country to “transform itself” if it is to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

The prime minister thanked the courts for allowing the government to implement the foreclosure law, saying that because of it, the government could allow people to own houses on mortgage.

He said now, people from the lower income class such as mechanics, welders and others could own their houses by paying installments to banks.

“Because of this [foreclosure law], banks can finance [loans for the people],” he said. “If this law is not there, banks would not finance loans,” he said, adding that compared to the developed countries, Pakistan did not have a system of mortgage housing schemes.

“This means that those who do not have cash in hand, they can never buy their own houses,” he said. Explaining the benefits of the mortgage agreement, he said people had to pay installments instead of rent and in the end, became owners of their own homes.

The prime minister said the status quo did not want Pakistan to change for the better, saying that over the years, the country adopted a system where bribery to get something accomplished became a norm.

He said Pakistan will “have to transform itself” if it needed to meet challenges of the 21st century. He thanked the Lahore Development Authority and acknowledged the Punjab government for backing the authority in ensuring this scheme was launched for the low-income sector.

“The LDA has brought about a lot of improvements in itself,” he said.

PM on relief measures undertaken by his govt

Answering critics who question his government’s intention to establish a state in Pakistan similar to Riyasat-e-Madinah, PM Imran Khan said it will take time but Pakistan was headed in the right direction.

Emphasising on the importance of rule of law, he said Pakistan was faced with a defining moment as the “political mafias” in the country were trying for the restoration of the status quo.

“You go to the developed world, such as the countries of Germany and the UK, there is no one above the law there,” he said. “There is no privileged class there.”

Speaking about other measures taken by the government for the poor, PM Imran Khan said even developed countries in the world were not providing universal health coverage to its citizens but Pakistan aspired to do the same.

The premier said all citizens of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have health insurance which allows them to get themselves treated for Rs1mn free of charge.

“Punjab, the largest province in the country, has taken up the challenge to provide all of its citizens by the health insurance card by the end of this year” he said.

Earlier, speaking about the LDA Naya Pakistan Apartments, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar had said that the government is planning to build more than 35,000 apartments in Lahore for the poor.

He lamented that no one in the past had given due attention to the issue. “The government is committed to the welfare of the people and development of the country,” he added.

Profit not important than human lives, WTO should soften vaccine patent laws

Islamabad : April 09, 2021 : Chairman of National Business Group of FPCCI, President Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum and All Karachi Industrial Alliance, and former provincial minister Mian Zahid Hussain on Friday said decision of the government to register the whole population for vaccination is laudable.

However, the government should consider start registration of the whole population immediately as it is a matter of grave concern, he said.

Mian Zahid Hussain said that so far government has vaccinated 1.1 million people while 14000 have been vaccinated by private concerns which is unsatisfactory therefore efforts should be redoubled as over five thousand cases and the increasing death toll is unacceptable, he said.

Talking to the business community, the veteran business leader said that the planning minister has said that daily 125,000 people would be vaccinated after Eid but this pace will also take almost seven resulting in heavy social and economic losses.

He said that the third wave of virus is lethal and there is no surety about more waves in future while the global population cannot be left at the mercy of the virus.

Some western and eastern companies are not enough to vaccinate billions of people therefore all the countries should be allowed and financed to make their own vaccine.

The developed nations and global institutions should come forward for the purpose while patent and IPR laws should be relaxed to keep the price of vaccines at the minimum level.

He said that World Trade Organisation should realise that profit of some companies is not important than human lives therefore patient laws for the production of vaccine should be relaxed as many countries can make their own vaccine but cannot pay hefty amounts to multinationals that have developed the drug.

The developers of vaccine should prefer the welfare of the masses over profit and share their information to save millions of lives which will also bring an end to vaccine elitism, he demanded.
