India inflict 61-run defeat on Pakistan in T20 World Cup encounter

India inflict 61-run defeat on Pakistan in T20 World Cup encounter

COLOMBO, FEB 15: Early wickets put Pakistan on the back foot as they begin their 176-run chase in the high-stakes ICC Men’s T20 World Cup encounter at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Sunday.

Earlier, Pakistan spinners held India in check, limiting them to 175/7.

Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha’s decision to field first did not prove beneficial for the Green Shirts as the Men in Blue accumulated 175/7 in their 20 overs.

India got off to a dismal start to their innings as Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha’s decision to open the attack gave them a massive breakthrough in the form of top-ranked T20I batter Abhishek Sharma, who fell for a four-ball duck.

Following the early stutter, opener Kishan forced an astounding recovery by putting together a one-sided second-wicket partnership with Tilak Varma.

The partnership frustrated Pakistan’s bowling unit and yielded 87 runs off 45 deliveries before Saim Ayub gave the Green Shirts a much-needed breakthrough by getting rid of set batter Kishan, who remained the top-scorer with a 40-ball 77, comprising 10 fours and three sixes.

Kishan’s dismissal forced the new pair of Varma and Suryakumar Yadav to rework the innings as they batted cautiously to add 38 runs for the third-wicket stand before Saim pulled things back by dismissing the left-handed batter and Hardik Pandya (zero) in successive deliveries.

Varma made a cautious 25 off 24 deliveries with the help of two fours and a six.

With the scoreboard reading 126/4 in 14.3 overs, Shivam Dube joined skipper Yadav in the middle, and the duo retained India’s momentum by knitting a 33-run stand, which culminated with the latter’s dismissal in the penultimate over off Usman Tariq.

The Indian captain remained a notable run-getter with a 29-ball 32, laced with three boundaries.

Dube followed suit and perished on the penultimate delivery of the innings after scoring 27 off 17 deliveries, hitting three fours and a six.

Saim Ayub was the standout bowler for Pakistan, taking three wickets for 25 runs in his four overs, while Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Tariq made one scalp apiece.

T20 World Cup 2026: India lose quick wickets, pressure mounts in high-voltage clash

COLOMBO, FEB 15: The Indian side stabilised its innings despite suffering an early setback against Pakistan in the high-voltage ICC Men’s T20 World Cup clash at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Sunday.

Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha struck in the opening over, dismissing Abhishek Sharma for a duck, but Ishan Kishan fought back and hit boundaries to get his side back on track.

Earlier, Pakistan have decided to bowl first after winning the toss.

Both Pakistan and India have so far played two matches in the tournament, gaining four points each; however, the Indian side currently tops the points table courtesy of their net run rate, with Pakistan in the second spot.

Historically, the two teams have faced each other 16 times in the shortest, with India leading the head-to-head record with 13 wins, while Pakistan emerged victorious thrice.

The match will mark the first time both teams will be facing each other since last year’s Asia Cup final, a tense event staged following military conflict between India and Pakistan that nearly escalated into a fully-fledged war between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

The latest meeting comes against the backdrop of a tumultuous fortnight in which Pakistan’s boycott threat — later reversed — nearly blew a hole in the tournament’s marquee fixture.

Australia unveils initial US$2.8 billion for new nuclear subs facility

Australia unveils initial US$2.8 billion for new nuclear subs facility

SYDNEY, FEB 15: Australia unveiled AU$3.9 billion (US$2.8 billion) in spending on Sunday as a “down payment” on a new facility to build nuclear submarines under the tripartite AUKUS security pact with Britain and the United States.

The AUKUS pact aims to arm Australia with a fleet of cutting-edge submarines from the United States and would provide for cooperation in developing an array of warfare technologies.

The submarines, the sale of which will begin in 2032, lie at the heart of Australia’s strategy of improving its long-range strike capabilities in the Pacific, particularly against China.

The deal could cost Canberra up to US$235 billion over the next 30 years, and also includes the technology to build its own vessels in the future.

Defence minister Richard Marles said the facility in Osborne, near the southern city of Adelaide, would be at the heart of that.

In the long term, an estimated AU$30 billion is expected to be spent on the facility.

“The transformation underway at Osborne shows Australia is on track to deliver the sovereign capability to build our nuclear-powered submarines for decades to come,” he said.

The investment in the Submarine Construction Yard is critical to delivering Australia’s conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines”, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement.

“We are accelerating AUKUS opportunities to secure Australia’s future defence capability and create lasting prosperity and jobs for the state,” he added.

In September, Canberra also revealed a US$8 billion investment to be spent over a decade to transform a shipbuilding and maintenance precinct in Perth, Western Australia, into facilities for a future fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.

Australia had a major bust-up with France in 2021 when it cancelled a multi-billion-dollar deal to buy a fleet of diesel-powered submarines from Paris and went with the AUKUS programme instead.

The pact was thrown into doubt last June when Washington said it was launching a review into whether it aligned with President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda.

In December, the Pentagon said it had cleared that hurdle and that Trump had ordered it “full steam ahead”.

Russian orders block on WhatsApp

Russian orders block on WhatsApp

News Desk

MOSCOW: Russia has ordered a block on WhatsApp, as the Kremlin continues to tighten restrictions on messaging apps.

Meta-owned WhatsApp said the move aimed to push more than 100 million of its app users in Russia to a “state-owned surveillance app”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the BBC that the decision had been made “due to [Meta’s] unwillingness to comply with the norms and the letter of Russian law”. He has said Meta could resume operations if it “complies with [the law] and enters into dialogue”.

Asked whether authorities were trying to force Russians to use the state-developed Max app, Peskov said the “national messenger [is an] available alternative” for Russians. Russian internet regulator Roskomnadzor said this week it was further curbing access to messaging app Telegram as well, citing a lack of security. Telegram is highly popular in Russia and said to be widely used by its forces in Ukraine.

Pro-war bloggers have complained that the move was hampering communications on the ground.

Even before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian authorities had begun work on creating a domestic alternative to the global internet. Those moves have gathered pace during the war, along with a push towards state-backed platform called Max.

Critics have alleged Max could be used for surveillance by the Russian authorities, though state media have denied that. Max is now being promoted widely inside Russia, through TV advertisements and billboards, by local officials and by the media.

Russia has argued that both WhatsApp and Telegram have refused to store Russian users’ data in the country as required by law. Authorities in Moscow also allege that WhatsApp is one of the main services used to defraud and extort money from Russians – a reason they cite for people to migrate to the Max app.

WhatsApp said it was doing everything it could to keep people connected.

“Trying to isolate over 100 million users from private and secure communication is a backwards step and can only lead to less safety for people in Russia,” it said in a statement.

State-run news agency Tass reported earlier this year that WhatsApp was expected to be permanently blocked in the country in 2026.
