England beat Italy to qualify for T20 World Cup Super Eights

England on Monday defeated Italy by 24 runs in their final Group C match of the T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens to secure their place in the Super Eight stage of the cricket tournament.

Chasing a challenging 203, Italy mounted a strong reply but were restricted to 178 in their 20 overs.

The Italian innings suffered an early double blow as pacer Jofra Archer dismissed both Anthony Mosca and JJ Smuts for ducks in the very first over.

Justin Mosca and skipper Harry Manenti then combined to stabilise the innings, but the partnership was short-lived as Manenti fell for 12 off 11 deliveries, which included one four and one six, leaving Italy at 22-3 in four overs.

Anthony Mosca found support from Ben Manenti as the pair added a 92-run stand, helping Italy surpass the 100-run mark and keeping England under pressure.

Their momentum, however, was halted when Will Jacks dismissed Ben Manenti, who had played a blistering knock of 60 off 25 balls, featuring four boundaries and six sixes.

Justin Mosca was next to depart, scoring a vital 43 from 34 deliveries, including seven fours, before falling to Adil Rashid.

Italy then suffered further setbacks as Sam Curran removed Marcus Campopiano and Gian-Piero Meade cheaply for zero and one respectively, leaving the team reeling at 138-7 in 15.5 overs.

Grant Stewart kept Italy’s hopes alive with a furious 45 off 23 balls, including five sixes and two fours, but Curran bowled a superb penultimate over, conceding only five runs and ending Stewart’s explosive knock.

Jamie Overton wrapped up the innings by dismissing Ali Hasan for a duck, sealing England’s 24-run victory and their passage to the Super Eight stage.

Sam Curran and Jamie Overton spearheaded the bowling attack, taking three wickets each, while Jofra Archer claimed two. Will Jacks and Adil Rashid contributed one wicket apiece.

Opting to bat first, England made a steady start as openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler looked positive at the crease. However, Grant Stewart struck early, dismissing Buttler for three off four deliveries, leaving England at 21-1 in 2.1 overs.

Salt then combined with Jacob Bethell to rebuild the innings, adding 33 runs for the second wicket. The partnership was broken when Salt fell to Ali Hasan for a brisk 28 off 15 balls, which included two fours and two sixes.

Bethell followed soon after, scoring 23 off 20 deliveries, featuring two fours and a six, as Ben Manenti reduced England to 67-3 in 7.3 overs.

Skipper Harry Brook tried to accelerate, contributing 14 off nine balls, including a four and a six, before falling to JJ Smuts. Tom Banton and Sam Curran then attempted to push England towards a competitive total.

Banton played a valuable 30 off 21 deliveries, including three fours and a six, helping England cross the 100-run mark. He became the fifth wicket to fall when Crishan Kalugamage struck, reducing England to 105-5 in 12.4 overs.

Will Jacks then set the stage alight, finding the boundary regularly, while Curran provided solid support as England passed 150 in the 17th over.

Curran was eventually dismissed for 25 off 19 deliveries, which included two sixes, with Kalugamage claiming his second wicket.

Jamie Overton came in during the final overs to add crucial runs but was dismissed in the last over by Grant Stewart after scoring 15 off nine deliveries, including a four and a six.

Jacks, however, smashed a six to take England past the 200-run mark, finishing unbeaten on 53 off 22 balls, with three fours and four sixes, notching up his first T20I fifty.

For Italy, Crishan Kalugamage and Grant Stewart took two wickets each, while JJ Smuts, Ali Hasan, and Ben Manenti contributed one wicket apiece.

Gilani Vows to Revive Pakistan Football

Gilani Vows to Revive Pakistan Football

By Our Correspondent

ISLAMABAD, FEB 16: Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Syed Mohsen Gilani has expressed optimism about steering the federation away from years of crisis and revitalising football in the country.

The PFF president was speaking a day after the conclusion of the National Challenge Cup. “Since I took over, our aim has been to put better systems in place to ensure the growth of football in the country,” Gilani said.

The PFF chief emphasised that he is the first elected president after the federation spent several years under a FIFA-appointed Normalisation Committee.

Mohsen Gilani highlighted several key initiatives undertaken by the PFF since his election, notably the men’s national team’s maiden participation in the AFC Futsal Championship qualifiers, the upcoming FIFA Series — where the national women’s team will feature — as well as the Under-16 team’s tour of Kazakhstan to compete in a UEFA development tournament.

“The aim is to provide maximum international exposure for our teams,” the PFF president stressed, adding that efforts are also underway to arrange international friendlies for the men’s national team.

“It is a landmark achievement for the PFF that the national women’s team will take part in a FIFA event, where they will face teams like Turks and Caicos Islands, Mauritania and Ivory Coast in April during the FIFA Series.

“The PFF will also be participating in a UEFA event for the first time when our Under-16 team competes in the development tournament in Kazakhstan.”

The PFF president further revealed that plans are in motion to launch the domestic league, while talks with the government are ongoing regarding the restoration of departmental teams.

“The Challenge Cup marked the first step towards the resumption of domestic football activities in the country, and it concluded successfully yesterday with WAPDA being crowned champions.

“We are engaged in discussions with the government to push for the restoration of more departmental teams.

“As far as the league project is concerned, we have witnessed significant interest and have shortlisted several companies as potential partners.”

Gilani stressed that investment in football would lead to improved infrastructure.

“The launch of the league will generate revenue for the PFF,” he said, adding that it would help address the federation’s funding challenges.

“We have long relied on funding from FIFA and the AFC to run our affairs, but I believe it is time to change that.

“We need to diversify our revenue streams, and that will naturally contribute to better infrastructure development across the country.”

FPCCI President hails Sindh govt’s landmark cess reduction decision

FPCCI President hails Sindh govt's landmark cess reduction decision

KARACHI, FEB 16 /DNA/ – Atif Ikram Sheikh, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), has welcomed the Sindh government’s decision to reduce the infrastructure development cess, terming it a historic breakthrough that is expected to reduce the cost of doing business by hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Mr. Atif Ikram Sheikh lauded the provincial government for lowering the cess from the existing 1.85 per cent to a bracket of 0.80pc to 0.85pc. He noted that the business community had been struggling with this issue for the past 20 years; and, the resolution marks a significant relief for trade and industry.

Mr. Atif Ikram Sheikh further highlighted that the infrastructure cess on the Export Facilitation Scheme (EFS) has been completely abolished, fulfilling a major demand of exporters. The FPCCI’s prolonged struggle has finally borne fruit, providing much-needed fiscal space to the trading community, he added.

Elaborating on the financial implications, FPCCI’s Senior Vice President Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, disclosed that approximately Rs350 billion related to the Sindh Infrastructure Development Cess is currently tied up in court cases. Under the new arrangement, traders who withdraw their cases will be offered a structured payment plan.

Mr. Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, SVP FPCCI, elaborating upon relief for withdrawal of cases, traders will be required to pay 15pc of the outstanding amount by July 31, 2026; another 15pc by October 31, 2026; and a further 15pc by July 31, 2027. He noted that the reduction in the cess by one per cent would significantly ease the liquidity burden on importers.

Mr. Abdul Mohamin Khan, VP FPCCI and Regional Chairman Sindh, expressed gratitude to Sindh government representatives – specifically Mr. Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Mr. Zia ul Hassan Lanjar and Mr. Murtaza Wahab, for their role in facilitating the agreement.

Mr. Abdul Mohamin Khan detailed the long-term settlement plan for the backlog, stating that after the initial 45pc payment has been made over the next year and a half, the remaining 55pc of the outstanding cess will be payable over a 12-year period, spanning from 2028 to 2040. This measure will not only cut costs but will also expedite the clearance process at ports, he observed.

Mr. Asif Sakhi, VP FPCCI, clarified the differential rates applicable under the new regime. He stated that for traders with pending court cases who opt for the settlement, the new cess rate will be 0.85pc; whereas, for those without litigation, the rate will be fixed at 0.80pc.

The FPCCI leadership expressed hope that the Sindh government would continue to support the industrial sector with similar business-friendly initiatives in the future.
