Ramadan moon sighted in Saudi Arabia, first day of fasting on Feb 18

Ramadan moon sighted in Saudi Arabia, first day of fasting on Feb 18

RIYADH: The Ramadan crescent was sighted in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday evening, which means the first day of fasting will be observed on February 18.

The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia made the official confirmation regarding the beginning of the holy month for the year 1447 AH.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar also announced that Ramadan will begin on Wednesday, February 18, following confirmed sightings of the crescent moon.

The UAE’s Presidential Court stated that February 18 marks the first day of fasting, after verification by the official moon-sighting committee, Gulf News reported.

The Muslim world welcomes Ramadan with deep religious devotion, as over a billion believers fast to practice patience, self-discipline, and generosity.

Islamic months last 29 or 30 days, with their start and end determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, so Ramadan does not fall on the same Gregorian date each year.

As the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar — which is about 10 days shorter than the Gregorian year due to its lunar basis — Ramadan shifts annually across the Gregorian calendar.

PHC orders immediate reopening of roads blocked by PTI protesters

PHC orders immediate reopening of roads blocked by PTI protesters

PESHAWAR, FEB 17: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday ordered the immediate reopening of highways and all major roads blocked due to protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against the alleged negligence in the treatment of the jailed party founder Imran Khan.

In a two-page written order, the court ordered police to reopen all roads and highways today, saying the petitioner’s counsel informed the court that road closures had caused severe hardship to the public.

The court observed that counsel had submitted that patients had died while being transported due to road blockages.

Traffic flow remained disrupted on key intercity routes in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the PTI continued its protests against the alleged delay in the treatment of the party founder, who has been in jail since August 2023.

In Swabi, party workers continued their sit-in at the motorway rest area, leading to the suspension of traffic on the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway.

In Abbottabad, PTI workers continued a sit-in at the Havelian Interchange on the Hazara Motorway for a fourth consecutive day. As a result, the route remained closed from both the Islamabad and Mansehra sides.

In Nowshera, PTI workers continued their protest near the Rashakai-Motorway Interchange, with local administration advising commuters to use the GT Road as an alternative route.

During today’s hearing, the PHC summoned the KP advocate general, inspector general of police and the chief secretary in connection with the case.

In its order, the court stated that IG and chief secretary admitted that the roads had been closed due to the protest.

When asked about action taken against the protesters, the IG and chief secretary failed to satisfy the court, read the court order.

The court expressed regret over the response submitted by the police and the provincial government on the matter, directing the IG to ensure that no roads are blocked by protesters.

The PHC also ordered the police to take all possible measures to restore traffic on highways and other roads without delay.

FCC moved against road closures
A separate petition has been filed in the Federal Constitutional Court challenging road blockades in KP, with the petitioner seeking an immediate order to restore movement across the province.

The petition, filed by citizen Khawaja Azhar Rashid, stated that closures by PTI workers have disrupted traffic and created serious difficulties for commuters across the province.

The petitioner warned that continued road closures during the holy month of Ramadan could lead to shortages of essential goods in the province, requesting the court to direct authorities to ensure freedom of movement within the province.

The PTI protests and road blockades come as party leaders demand that Imran be shifted to a hospital for treatment of an eye condition.

In addition to party workers, PTI lawmakers have staged a sit-in at the Parliament House in Islamabad, which entered its fifth day today.

PTI leaders are also holding a sit-in outside KP House in Islamabad, calling for the former prime minister to be granted access to his personal physician and family members.

Tarique Rahman sworn in as Bangladesh’s PM after landslide election victory

Tarique Rahman sworn in as Bangladesh's PM after landslide election victory

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Bangladesh’s prime minister on Tuesday, marking a decisive political shift in the South Asian nation after his party’s sweeping parliamentary election victory.

Rahman, 60, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and assassinated President Ziaur Rahman, takes office facing urgent challenges, including restoring political stability, rebuilding investor confidence, and reviving key industries such as the garment sector after the prolonged turmoil that followed the Gen Z‑led uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024.

An interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus ran the country through the transitional period leading up to the election.

Breaking with tradition, the swearing‑in ceremony was held under the open sky at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the national parliament building, instead of the Bangabhaban, the president’s official residence where such events are usually organised.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin officiated as Rahman and his cabinet took their oaths in the presence of senior political figures, diplomats, civil and military officials, and representatives from invited countries, including China, India and Pakistan.

Rahman’s BNP secured a commanding two‑thirds majority, returning to power after nearly two decades. The Jamaat‑e‑Islami, contesting its first election since a 2013 ban was lifted following Hasina’s ouster, won a record 68 seats.

Hasina’s Awami League party was banned from contesting after its registration was revoked by the Election Commission.

Jamaat and its allies — including the National Citizen Party, led by youth activists who played a prominent role in the movement that toppled Hasina — will form the opposition.

Rahman’s elevation caps a long and turbulent political journey. He returned to Bangladesh last year after 17 years of self‑imposed exile in London, arriving shortly before his mother’s death.

Rivals have long criticised his political record, pointing to corruption allegations he denies, but his return energised party supporters and reshaped the BNP’s campaign.

In his first remarks after the election, Rahman urged calm and restraint, saying: “Peace, law and order must be maintained at any cost.” He called on supporters to avoid retaliation, warning: “We will not tolerate any kind of chaos.”

Egypt ready to share successful development experience with African countries: FM

Egypt ready to share successful development experience with African countries: FM

ADDIS ABABA, Feb 17:Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty affirmed that Egypt has a successful development experience and is ready to share its expertise with other African countries.

Speaking to Sada El-Balad channel on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Abdelatty said Egypt serves as a model for conflict resolution and development.

He noted that the Egyptian private sector contributes more than 66% of national investments, reflecting a strong and competitive economy.

He added that African nations value Egypt’s role in advancing peace, security, and development in the continent, in line with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s vision in this regard.

Abdelatty pointed out to Egypt’s ongoing initiatives, including the “Silencing the Guns” initiative aimed at achieving sustainable peace, and efforts to rebuild post-conflict regions.

He stressed that real development cannot occur without stability, and that African countries increasingly adopt Egypt’s approach to security and development.

He also highlighted Egypt’s achievements in infrastructure, energy, and industrial sectors, including building new cities, localizing industries like pharmaceuticals, and developing renewable energy projects such as the largest solar power plant in Aswan.

Many African nations have expressed interest in replicating Egypt’s urban and industrial development models and requested support in human capacity building to enhance their own development efforts, he noted.

Abdelatty underscored that Egypt sees the necessity of collaboration among African countries to resolve conflicts peacefully, mobilize resources, and reduce reliance on external actors.

Naqvi says Imran’s eye examination in jail delayed due to Aleema’s ‘political tactics’

Naqvi says Imran's eye examination in jail delayed due to Aleema's 'political tactics'

ISLAMABAD, FEB 17: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Tuesday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, was the reason behind a delay in the eye examination of the former prime minister.

Naqvi, during a press conference, detailed the meeting between doctors who examined the PTI founder in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, and Imran’s medical team, as well as PTI leaders, following which the latter expressed satisfaction with the medical progress.

“…his [Imran’s] doctors said, ‘excellent! Had we done the treatment, we would have done the same. Political leaders said, ‘we are satisfied, and we will tell our people about this’,” the security czar mentioned.

Naqvi said that he asked the medical team if they wanted to do further testing, to which they responded that all possible tests had been conducted.

“But all I can tell you is that Aleema Khan sahiba told her party that if we accept this, the issue will die down. Due to her, the medical check-up could not be conducted for three days,” he said.

On the one hand, they say that they are very close, and on the other, they all-out politicised this issue, the federal minister added.

He said that Aleema told party members that accepting the medical findings would weaken their position, adding that her stance delayed the medical examination for three days. He maintained that the issue could have been resolved earlier if there had been a willingness from the outset.

The remarks come amid heightened political tension after a medical report submitted to the Supreme Court confirmed that the former prime minister was diagnosed with a serious eye condition — central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).

CRVO is generally associated with older age and underlying cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. The report stated that Imran, who has been in jail since August 2023, had complained of losing about 85% of the vision in his right eye.

Following the report, the PTI and members of Khan’s family raised an alarm over his health and demanded that he be shifted to a hospital for treatment.

It may be noted that the former ruling party, along with its allies in the opposition, is staging a sit-in outside parliament in Islamabad and at several other locations across the federal capital and the country, to protest Imran’s medical condition.

The protest has been going on for five days, with PTI and its allies demanding leadership and personal physicians’ access to Khan.

‘Opposition spreading propaganda over Khan’s health’
Naqvi said that propaganda had been spread regarding the eye condition of the PTI founder, adding that the matter was unnecessarily politicised and being exploited for political gain. He said that while some political figures expressed sympathy, the issue was simultaneously used for political purposes, and insisted the government did not wish to politicise the situation.

The security czar went on to say that contact with PTI leaders had been established even before Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai wrote to the prime minister. NA speaker Ayaz Sadiq facilitated communication between the government and the opposition, he added.

Naqvi further said that the authorities asked PTI to nominate a recognised eye specialist for examination, while the party requested that the PTI founder be shifted to hospital for one week — a request officials said was not feasible, though hospitalisation could be considered if doctors recommended it.

The minister said officials waited for PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan for an hour, but he later conveyed that he could not attend after consulting party leadership. He said Gohar was invited to visit alongside opposition leaders and bring his doctors, but replied that the doctor was in Lahore. Opposition leaders subsequently arrived at PIMS Hospital, where they met doctors for about one and a half hours and received briefings, including consultations conducted by phone.

Naqvi questioned whether the treatment being discussed was also extended to the thousands of other prisoners in custody, asking if they received similar facilities. He reiterated his view that journalists should be taken inside the jail to see the amenities available so the matter can be settled once and for all.

He said the food prepared for the PTI founder is part of official records and insisted that the medical report is clear on all aspects. Naqvi maintained that he would prefer to personally facilitate media access to demonstrate the facilities provided, stressing that the government does not want the situation to be politicised.

The interior minister said if political revenge were intended, the first step would be to make life difficult for a prisoner, but emphasised that authorities are operating strictly under the jail manual. He added that the PTI founder is receiving extensive facilities in prison.

He said that a court ruling has already directed authorities to improve the law and order situation and affirmed that the government will ensure implementation. He said that some individuals are more concerned about political gains than the PTI founder’s health.

‘Attempt to disrupt Red Zone security being made’
Referring to security concerns, he said there was an attempt to create disruption in Islamabad’s Red Zone, adding that any issue can be resolved through dialogue and that the prime minister has repeatedly called for talks.

Commenting on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Naqvi said the situation in the province is visible to all, with incidents occurring frequently. He said the provincial government must focus more on improving conditions and stressed that no conflict can be resolved without political leadership being on board.

He urged PTI workers to reflect on who may be trying to derail the country, adding that the current situation might have been avoided if more prudent voices within the party had prevailed.

Naqvi further added that discussions related to an NRO are not his subject, reiterating that such matters do not fall within his purview.

Uzbekistan aims to advance constructive initiatives within the peace council

Uzbekistan aims to advance constructive initiatives within the peace council

TASHKENT: /DNA/ – On 17–19 February, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, will pay a visit to the United States and take part in the inaugural meeting of the Peace Council, a new international body established as a multilateral platform to promote dialogue and the peaceful resolution of pressing global and regional conflicts. The Peace Council was founded in January 2026 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the founding charter was formally signed in a ceremony attended by heads of state and government, as well as representatives of several founding countries.

Launched earlier this year, the initiative has garnered the support of a number of states, including Uzbekistan, which joined as a founding member, thereby reaffirming its commitment to the principles of peaceful diplomacy, multilateral engagement, and shared responsibility for maintaining international stability.

The establishment of the Peace Council represents a logical continuation of the international community’s efforts to develop effective mechanisms for conflict prevention and to seek political and diplomatic solutions to the most acute crises of our time, particularly in the Middle East.

Uzbekistan’s participation in the creation of this structure reflects Tashkent’s consistent foreign policy course aimed at promoting dialogue, respect for international law, and the rejection of force-based scenarios. The country’s position on the Palestinian issue – grounded in support for a just and sustainable peace settlement in accordance with United Nations resolutions – has gained additional international resonance within the framework of this initiative.

The upcoming participation of the Uzbek head of state in the first meeting of the Peace Council also aligns with the recent intensification of Uzbek–American political dialogue. Over the past six months, high-level contacts between Tashkent and Washington have significantly increased, signaling a qualitatively new stage in bilateral relations.

In September of last year, the President of Uzbekistan visited New York to attend a regular session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he held meetings with world leaders and heads of international organizations and discussed key issues on the global and regional agenda.

Further momentum was generated in early November 2025 during the Uzbek President’s working visit to the United States, which included talks with the U.S. President, as well as meetings with representatives of the American establishment, Congress, and business circles. Particular attention during the visit was devoted to strategic partnership, economic cooperation, investment engagement, and regional security, including the “C5+1” format, viewed by both sides as an effective mechanism for coordinating efforts in Central Asia.

Contacts between Tashkent and Washington have been maintained across various channels, including telephone conversations and interagency cooperation. An additional indication of growing mutual trust has been the expansion of economic dialogue and the establishment of new business cooperation platforms, reflecting a shared interest in deepening practical engagement. In the United States, Uzbekistan is increasingly perceived as a reliable, predictable, and responsible partner pursuing a balanced and pragmatic foreign policy.

Uzbekistan’s participation in the Peace Council is thus seen as further evidence of the country’s growing international standing and recognition of its constructive role in global affairs. For Washington, it also confirms that Tashkent is an important partner in advancing initiatives aimed at strengthening peace, security, and sustainable development across Eurasia and beyond.

Amid the intensification of political dialogue, Uzbek–American cooperation continues to expand across key areas. These include collaboration in regional security, support for economic reforms in Uzbekistan, the development of trade and investment, and the deepening of humanitarian and educational ties. Joint projects in energy, digitalization, infrastructure, and human capital development are laying a solid foundation for a long-term partnership.

In sum, the forthcoming participation of the President of Uzbekistan in the inaugural meeting of the Peace Council not only underscores the country’s active role in shaping a new architecture of international dialogue, but also complements the positive trajectory of Uzbek–American relations. The visit to the United States will undoubtedly contribute to elevating interaction between Tashkent and Washington to a stable strategic level, serving the interests of both sides and the broader goal of strengthening peace and stability in the region and worldwide.

PM orders probe into Hockey team’s ‘shameful’ Australian treatment

PM orders probe into Hockey team's 'shameful' Australian treatment

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) received Rs 10 million from the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) specifically to arrange five-star hotel accommodations and other facilities for the squad

Asnar M Bhatti

ISLAMABAD, FEB 17: /DNA/ – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken serious notice of the alleged mismanagement and substandard services provided to the national hockey team during their recent FIH Pro League campaign in Australia, ordering a thorough inquiry into financial irregularities and administrative lapses.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) received Rs 10 million from the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) specifically to arrange five-star hotel accommodations and other facilities for the squad. However, players and officials faced severe hardships upon arrival, including hotel bookings being cancelled due to non-payment, forcing them to spend hours stranded on the streets of Canberra and Hobart. Reports indicate the team was ultimately housed in substandard guest houses, budget Airbnbs, and cramped shared rooms—far below the promised standards—despite the allocated funds. The ordeal compounded the team’s poor on-field performance.

Expressing deep concern over the mistreatment of national athletes, the Prime Minister directed authorities to investigate the misuse of funds, fix responsibility, and ensure strict action against those involved in the negligence and irregularities. “Our players represent the nation with dedication and deserve dignity, proper support, and world-class facilities—no excuses for such failures will be tolerated,” sources close to the PM quoted him as saying.

The incident has sparked outrage among fans, former players like Hassan Sardar and Samiullah Khan, who called it “shameful,” and called for systemic reforms in hockey governance to revive the national sport’s glory.
