Chinese court upholds death sentence for Canadian in drugs case

Beijing, Aug 10 :A Chinese court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence passed on a Canadian citizen for drug smuggling — one of a number of ongoing cases that have triggered a severe downturn in relations between Ottawa and Beijing.

The Liaoning Province Higher People’s Court said in a statement that both the verdict and sentence had been upheld.

“The facts found in the first trial were clear, the evidence was reliable and sufficient, the conviction was accurate, the sentence was appropriate, and the trial procedures were legal,” it said.

Nicaraguan ex-diplomat becomes 32nd critic arrested by Ortega

Managua, Aug 10 .A former Nicaraguan diplomat was arrested on Monday, police said, the latest critic of President Daniel Ortega detained ahead of the country’s presidential election later this year.

Mauricio Diaz, a former ambassador to Costa Rica and to the Organization of American States (OAS), was a member of the Citizens Alliance for Liberty (CXL) bloc, which lost its legal status on Friday and was excluded from the November 7 elections.

Diaz is being investigated for “acts that threaten the country’s sovereignty and self-determination and for inciting foreign involvement in internal affairs,” police said in a statement.

The spate of arrests, of which Diaz is the 32nd, include seven potential presidential candidates.

They have come amid accusations that Ortega is wiping out his competitors just months before the vote.

In power since 2007, Ortega is standing for a fourth consecutive term with his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, once again as his running mate.

Ortega, a former left-wing guerrilla, governed Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990 when the United States backed armed opposition to his Sandinista movement.

He was re-elected president in 2007, and in 2014 pushed through a constitutional amendment that scrapped presidential term limits, opening the way for him to remain president for life.

The detained opposition figures are accused of treason and threatening the country’s sovereignty under a law approved in December that has been denounced as a means of freezing out challengers to Ortega.

The crackdown began on June 2 with the arrest of Cristiana Chamorro, daughter of former president Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (1990-1997) and a likely presidential candidate. Chamorro is being held in house arrest.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Saturday said Nicaragua’s November election had “lost all credibility,” and accused Ortega of an autocratic campaign to crush opponents.

Taliban seizes more Afghan provincial capitals

Aibak is the fifth northern provincial capital to fall to the Taliban in less than a week, and the sixth overall in the country

News Desk

KABUL: The Taliban has captured a sixth provincial capital in Afghanistan in four days.

The armed group’s spokesman on Monday morning sent messages to the media, claiming it has overrun Aibak, the capital of the northern province of Samangan.

Samangan’s deputy provincial governor confirmed the takeover to a news agency.

The Taliban is “in full control”, he said, shortly after a Taliban spokesman tweeted that all government and police installations in Aibak had been “cleared”.

The armed group said its fighters now control the provincial governor’s compound, the intelligence directorate, police headquarters and all other official buildings.

Aibak is the fifth northern provincial capital to fall to the Taliban in less than a week, and the sixth overall in the country.

The fall of Samangan will put further strain on an already stretched Afghan security forces, as commandos and backup forces have been dispatched to the five other provinces whose capital have fallen — Kunduz, Takhar, Jowzjan, Sar-e-Pol, Nimruz — as well as the provinces of Herat, Kandahar and Helmand.

The group also said on Monday that they were moving in on Mazar-i-Sharif, northern Afghanistan’s largest city.

Overnight on Sunday and throughout the day on Monday, reports came in from the northern districts of Balkh, Badakhshan and Panjshir provinces, with the Taliban hoping to close in on their capitals.

Unlike Jowzjan, Kunduz and Sar-e-Pol, Samangan was once known to be one of the safest provinces in Afghanistan, with a minimal Taliban presence.

However, the last three years saw a growing presence of the group in the province.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Defence claimed government forces had launched clearance operations in Kunduz, but residents speaking to Al Jazeera said the Taliban spent much of Monday trying to get closer to the airport.

According to sources on the ground, the armed group has made it within 3km (2 miles) of the airport and fighting continues in the city.

With the road from Kabul to Kunduz having been under the rebel’s control for several months, residents fear that a Taliban takeover of the airport would be a “disaster”, robbing officials and residents of a possible evacuation.

Health officials in Kunduz say they have treated dozens of injured civilians since Sunday afternoon, when the Taliban first flew its white flag from the city’s main square.

Meanwhile, residents in Kandahar, Herat and Lashkar Gah say fighting still rages near their capitals, which the Taliban has been trying to overrun for more than a month.

There have been unconfirmed media reports that US and government air attacks have damaged a hospital and a high school near Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the air raids occurred, but said they targeted Taliban positions, killing 54 fighters and wounding 23. Its statement made no mention of a clinic or school being bombed.

Afghan officials have long called for additional air support, either through foreign air attacks or the procurement of their own airpower, but such tactics have proven controversial in Afghanistan, as there have been repeated reports of civilian casualties from such tactics.

Pak among top contributors against climate change: PM

PM Khan’s comments came as he inaugurated the world’s largest Miyawaki urban forest

Bureau Report

LAHORE: Prime Minister Imran Khan said Monday Pakistan had done more than its available resources to stop global warming, as he reiterated the need to plant trees for a better environment in the country.

PM Imran Khan’s comments came as he inaugurated the “world’s largest Miyawaki urban forest, Saggian”, which extends over a 100-Kanal area and includes 160,000 plantations, the PM’s Office said.

“The Miyawaki absorbs carbon and is a good way to curb pollution,” the premier said during the inauguration ceremony as he congratulated Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar for his efforts towards the project.

“This is the biggest Miyawaki forest and we dedicate this to [Akira Miyawaki] who had died last month,” he said.

Miyawaki was a leading plant ecologist and botanist from Japan.

“At least we leave Pakistan in better condition than we inherited. In Pakistan’s 60-year history, 64 crore trees were grown till 2013, and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, only from 2013-2018, we had grown a billion trees,” he said.

Now, we aim to grow 10 billion trees, he said, urging every Pakistani to grow a tree to leave the country in a better state than they had inherited.

“This is the Lahore that we grew up in, which had forests, gardens, and clean air […] and in no time, Lahore has now become one of the most polluted cities of the country,” he said.

The premier said scientists, after lengthy research, published a report last month in which they revealed that there are several things on land that cannot be changed back to their old form.

“For example, the rise in sea level and temperature due to global warming cannot be reversed as human beings have damaged the world to such an extent. But if we humans join hands, we might be able to save ourselves from a catastrophe,” he said.
