In the recent series of meetings held by PAJCCI, different stakeholders committed to fully support the initiatives to facilitate the trade between two neighboring countries without compromising security.

Special relief package worth Rs 50 billion for farmers announced during COVID-19: NA told

ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 :Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan on Wednesday apprised the National Assembly that special relief package worth Rs50 billion for the farmers was announced during COVID-19 pandemic.

Replying to various questions during Question Hour, the minister said the Finance Division had already released Rs15.6 billion to the ministry out of that Rs15.3 billion had been transferred to the provinces during 2020-21.

He said the government was making huge investment on farmers to increase production of various crops including wheat, rice, cotton and sugarcane etc. He said the country witnessed record wheat production of 27.5 million tons this year owing to the steps taken by the government.

He said the government has chalked out PM Emergency Plan worth Rs 277 billion for promotion of agriculture sector in the country.

The minister said subsidies were being provided to the farmers on fertilizers, seeds and pesticides. Soft loans on nominal markup were also being provided to the farmers for purchasing tractors and other agriculture related equipment, he added.

Ali Muhammad said efforts were being made to introduce new seeds to increase the agriculture productivity including cotton.

Pakistan was a self-sufficient country in the production of cotton yarn, rather it had exported 39,000-tons worth $121 million, he said.

However, he said cotton production, the basic raw material to manufacture yarn, was lowering for the past few years. The decline in the cotton area was mainly witnessed in Punjab province. The area under competing crops like sugarcane, rice, and maize was increasing at the cost of the cotton area, he said.

He said a subsidy of Rs10 billion would be provided to the farmers on different agriculture inputs for the Kharif season.

To another question, the minister said out of a total of 30 km length of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) loop section, 14 Km of track had been rehabilitated. However, KCR was presently operationalized from Marshalling Yard Pipri-Karachi City-Orangi stations (64 Kms) w.e.f 10-02-2021.

Further work from Orangi to Depot Hill Stations (16 Kms) was held up for want of construction of flyovers & underpasses by the provincial government for elimination of level-crossing as per the directives of Supreme Court of Pakistan, he said.

He said entire Circular Railways would be restored in Karachi in its original form as it was closed in December, 1999 within 06 months on the completion of flyovers & underpasses by the Government of Sindh. Pakistan Railways had completed the feasibility study for modern KCR which was in process of approval, he said.

MEDIA BODIES REJECT PROPOSED MEDIA AUTHORITY

DNA

KARACHI: The Representatives of media organizations i.e. All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) in a joint statement, have totally rejected the proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) and termed the concept as an unconstitutional  and draconian law against the freedom of press and expression and step toward imposing the state control to regulate all segments of media under over-centralized body.

The representatives of the media organizations in a joint statement, vehemently objected to the proposed PMDA as it appears to be aimed at to subjugate the freedom of press and expression.

The major stakeholders believe that the PMDA is an attempt to tighten Federal Government control over the media from one platform and ignores the fact that print, electronic and social media are separate entities each with their own  defined features.

The move to bring under state control smacks of an authoritarian streak that should have no place in democratically elected dispensation. The representatives of media organizations have urged upon the joint meeting of the Senate and National Assembly on Information to reject the Proposal completely.

INDIA HAS NO RIGHT TO SIT IN OR PRESIDE OVER UNSC, MASOOD KHAN TELLS MOOT IN TORONTO

TORONTO, AUG 11 /DNA/ – President Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Sardar Masood Khan has said India has no right to sit in the United Nations Security Council or preside over it after committing war crimes against humanity and genocide in the Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).“Under the Geneva Conventions and international law, India must be held accountable for heinous crimes and the cover of impunity given to India should be withdrawn,” he said in a video message to International Solidarity Conference on Kashmir, arranged in the Canadian city of Toronto under the joint aegis of Friends of Kashmir and the Canadian Council for Justice and Peace. Consul General of Pakistan Toronto Abdul Hameed, noted Canadian author and journalist Robert Fantina, Karen Rodman, director Just Peace Advocates Canada, Dr Ali Mallah, former vice President Canadian Arab Federation, Michaela Lavis, PhD student in Kashmir Studies, Dr. Zafar Bangash, director of Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought and member Friends of Kashmir Canada and a host of other speakers also spoke on the occasion and highlighted various aspects of the tragedy that was unfolding in the IIOJK. In his recorded video message played at the conference, Sardar Masood Khan told the participants the siege and occupation of IIOJK continues in the past two years as thousands of men, boys and children have been illegally detained and tortured in prison houses and concentration camps and 80 per cent of the Kashmiris land has been expropriated for Hindu settlements and businesses and millions of Hindus from India have been illegally domiciled to reduce Muslim majority in the occupied state.

He vowed the Kashmiris would repulse Indian designs of colonization and secure their freedom through self-determination. “We are grateful to the world parliaments and media networks for speaking up for Kashmiris in the past but now when the very identity of the state and its people is being erased, the world is silent,” he said and demanded the world stop India and take action to save the Kashmiris from decimation and destruction. In his speech, Consul General of Pakistan Toronto Abdul Hameed told the participants the real objective of the measures of 5th August was to change the demographic structure of IIOJK and make the holding of plebiscite impossible. The pace of issuing domicile certificates by India for facilitating outside settlers during the last 15 months in IIOJK is far faster than the speed with which Israeli government issued similar documents to settlers. Similarly other cases of settler colonialism in Palestine and other parts of the world have happened in the past while in IIOJK, it is happening now and at the fastest pace which means that humanity has not learnt anything from the bitter experience of the past.Abdul Hameed declared the measures of 5th August 2019 null and void as they violated the UNSC resolutions, international law, the fourth Geneva Convention, Simla agreement between India and Pakistan besides several UNSC resolutions including resolution 122 of 1957. He particularly underscored the UNSC resolution 122 of 1957 which was drafted after the UNSC had dealt with Kashmir for nine years and its view of the dispute had become quite mature and ripened being based on the accumulated wisdom of various UN sponsored formula for the solution, different proposals, reports and debates.  “This resolution clearly states that ‘the final disposition of the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be made in accordance with the will of the people expressed through the democratic method for a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the UN,’ he said, adding the same 1957 resolution underlines that no sham exercise of elections can be a substitute of the plebiscite to be held under the auspices of the UN, he said.
