2 CHILDREN KILLED IN SUICIDE ATTACK NEAR VEHICLE CARRYING CHINESE NATIONALS IN GWADAR

GWADAR – At least two children were killed in a “suicide attack” targeting a vehicle carrying Chinese nationals in Balochistan’s Gwadar district on Friday, the provincial government’s spokesperson said.

Three people, including the car’s driver, were also injured when a suicide bomber blew himself near the vehicle.

“Strongly condemn suicide attack on Chinese nationals’ vehicle in Gwadar,” Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani tweeted.

He said two children playing nearby had died in the explosion, while one Chinese national sustained minor injuries.

The Gwadar police control room earlier said three children had been injured in the incident. The injured were shifted to GDA Hospital in Gwadar.

The blast took place shortly after 7pm in Baloch Ward near Gwadar’s Eastbay Expressway.

Shahwani said police and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) teams were at the crime scene, and an investigation into the incident had been launched. He lamented that “innocent children” had died in the attack.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a motorcycle bomb blast took place at Quetta’s Hali Road roundabout, near Balochistan Assembly and the High Court, leaving two policemen martyred and 21 others, including 12 policemen, injured.

China is heavily involved in the development of the Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea as part of the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is itself part of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure project.

There have been other attacks targeting Chinese nationals in the country in recent weeks.

Late last month, a Chinese engineer who had recently arrived in Karachi was shot at and wounded in a moving car by gunmen riding a motorcycle in the city’s SITE area where he was supposed to repair imported machinery. The banned Balochistan Liberation Front had claimed responsibility for that attack.

On July 14, a bus carrying Chinese workers in the Dasu area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper Kohistan district fell into a ravine after an explosion, killing 13 people, including nine Chinese nationals. The blast left 28 other people injured.

After initially suggesting that the incident was an accident, the government earlier this month said a suicide bomber had attacked the bus which was carrying Chinese workers to the under-construction Dasu dam.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said last week that India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) intelligence agencies were behind the attack.

FM QURESHI TALKS TO SOUTH KOREAN COUNTERPART

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD, AUG 20 /DNA/ – Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi Friday said Pakistan would extend every possible assistance to Republic of Korea in evacuation of their diplomatic staff and other nationals from Afghanistan.

He assured this as he received a telephone call from Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, Chung Eui-yong.

Foreign Minister Qureshi said Pakistan would remain engaged with the Republic of Korea and other international partners in promoting efforts for peaceful and stable Afghanistan.

Sharing Pakistan’s perspective, he said the situation had changed significantly within a short span of time.

He said in the prevailing circumstances, it was extremely important to ensure safety and security of the Afghan people and protection of the rights of all Afghans.

He emphasized the importance of inclusive political settlement as the best way forward.

TALIBAN ANNOUNCE ESTABLISHMENT OF ISLAMIC EMIRATE

KABUL, Aug 20 (DNA): Four days after taking over Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, the Taliban on Thursday announced the establishment of an Islamic emirate in the country.

Spokesman for the Taliban Zabiullah Mujahid took to Twitter to announce the decision.

Mujahid shared a picture in the tweet, bearing the words, Da Afghanistan Islami Imarat’ and also the Islamic state’s flag as well as the official logo.

The spokesman said in the tweet that the newly established emirate is in favour of better ambassadorial and trade relations with all the countries.

He categorically rejected reports that the Taliban government was against having trade relations with a certain country. “All talk of severing trade links with a certain country is baseless,” he announced.

Meanwhile, the Taliban’s spokesman at its Qatar office Suhail Shaheen has said that there is no space for the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan following the establishment of an Islamic emirate in the country.

The Taliban have tried to reassure fearful Afghans — and a wary international community — that this time around they will be “positively different”, but their reputation precedes them and few trust the group.

The Taliban are “committed” to the rights of women, who will be able to work and study, the group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had earlier said.

The Taliban have promised that they will end the narcotics industry in Afghanistan, one of the world’s hubs for the production and trafficking of drugs such as heroin.

It may take some doing, especially if their new government does not have the same access to financial reserves and foreign aid that have sustained Afghanistan’s fragile economy for two decades.

And despite their claims to the contrary, UN monitors say the illicit drugs industry has been one of the biggest sources of revenue for the Taliban, bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars, according to estimates published last year. DNA
