Russia pledges retaliatory measures after new U.S. sanctions

MOSCOW, AUG 21: Moscow pledged retaliatory measures after a new set of sanctions imposed by the United States on a Russian ship and two companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Russia‘s foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

Washington imposed the sanctions on Friday on a ship, its owner and a construction company, but opponents of the project said the measures were insufficient to stop it.

The United States and Britain also imposed sanctions on Friday on men they said were Russian intelligence operatives responsible for the poisoning one year ago of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

“We view such hostile actions by the Biden administration as dictated by a lack of political will and an unwillingness to build U.S.-Russian relations on a partnership basis,” Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, was quoted as saying in the statement.

Erdoğan, Putin agree to strengthen coordination on Afghanistan issue

ANKARA, AUG 21: Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan discussed the situation in Afghanistan with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a phone call and agreed to strengthen bilateral coordination on the Afghanistan issue, according to the information released by the official sources on Saturday.

Turkish and Russian leaders emphasised the priority was counter-terrorism and efforts to tackle drug trafficking, the presidential sources said in a statement.

Yasir Hussain praises Sajal for ‘no friendships’ in showbiz

Yasir Hussain may be in quarantine at the moment but he knows how to keep his fans and followers engaged on Instagram.

The actor had a Q&A session in which he opened up about everything from his newborn Kabeer to his friendships in entertainment. But what many of his followers found most interesting was his revelation about Sajal Ali.

Yasir said that Sajal is no one’s friend and that is the best thing about her. He remarked that showbiz is not a good place for friendships.

He called Sajal and Ahad Raza Mir the “cutest” couple.

The most interesting questions that poured in were about Yasir and Iqra Hussain’s son Kabeer, who was born in July.

A follower questioned Yasir why he doesn’t share Kabeer’s photos.

There were a few, however, who ended up embarrassing themselves. Yasir Hussain and Ayesha Omar will star in a film on Javed Iqbal, who was one of Pakistan’s most notorious serial killers. The project, titled The Untold Story of a Serial Killer: Javed Iqbal, will be pitched to Netflix, Amazon Prime and other international streaming platforms. It is based on Abu Aleeha’s book Kukri.

Taliban co-founder Baradar in Kabul for talks to set up government

KABUL, AUG 21: Other senior Taliban leaders seen in the capital in recent days include Khalil Haqqani — one of America’s most wanted terrorists with a $5 million bounty on his head.

A senior Taliban official told AFP that Baradar would meet “jihadi leaders and politicians for an inclusive government set-up”.

Baradar arrived in Afghanistan last Tuesday from Qatar, choosing to touch down in the country’s second-biggest city Kandahar — the Taliban’s spiritual birthplace.

Within hours of his return, the group announced its rule would be “different” this time.

The Taliban have said they want this iteration of their government to be “inclusive”, but have given few details of who it would include.

Arrested in Pakistan in 2010, Baradar was in custody until pressure from the United States saw him freed in 2018 and relocated to Qatar.

He was appointed head of the Taliban’s political office in Doha, where he oversaw the signing of the agreement that led to the agreement for US forces to withdraw and end their 20-year campaign.

On Friday, Khalil Haqqani — the uncle of Taliban deputy leader Sirajuddin Haqqani — was seen leading prayers at a mosque in Kabul.

Another key leader of the so-called Haqqani network — Anas Haqqani — was also in the capital and had met former president Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah, who led the overall peace process for the previous administration.

‘Punish the perpetrators’: China presses Pakistan for ‘practical measures’ after Gwadar attack

ISLAMABAD, AUG 21: The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan on Saturday “strongly condemned” a suicide attack targeting a vehicle carrying Chinese nationals in Balochistan’s Gwadar district on Friday, asking Pakistan “to take practical and effective measures” to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.

At least two children were killed and three people were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself near the vehicle at around 7pm yesterday (Friday). Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani had confirmed it was a suicide attack.https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-7078513716629609&output=html&h=280&adk=4248113910&adf=4119405764&pi=t.aa~a.2356292401~i.8~rp.4&w=696&fwrn=4&fwrnh=100&lmt=1629548502&num_ads=1&rafmt=1&armr=3&sem=mc&pwprc=2527759049&psa=1&ad_type=text_image&format=696×280&url=https%3A%2F%2Fislamabadpost.com.pk%2Fpunish-the-perpetrators-china-presses-pakistan-for-practical-measures-after-gwadar-attack%2F&flash=0&fwr=0&pra=3&rh=174&rw=696&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&wgl=1&fa=27&adsid=ChEI8MiCiQYQ1KGdxafuhfbvARJIAIrcewPPfmnXnJ-ZXLA6huZcbOEsSCqFymdS37nr8_2nieSPudnfYTAML6PM_QFFzg5m6_lCYTpaeLvPv6CWptzmhcB-AtpO&uach=WyJXaW5kb3dzIiwiNi4xIiwieDg2IiwiIiwiOTIuMC40NTE1LjE1OSIsW10sbnVsbCxudWxsLG51bGxd&tt_state=W3siaXNzdWVyT3JpZ2luIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly9hdHRlc3RhdGlvbi5hbmRyb2lkLmNvbSIsInN0YXRlIjo3fV0.&dt=1629548499020&bpp=6&bdt=3494&idt=6&shv=r20210812&mjsv=m202108190101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3D2cab8dd1d7a97507-2251d758ada700c6%3AT%3D1619371132%3ART%3D1619371132%3AS%3DALNI_MbCWjL6fpbAI7C_Q4Gb9OcZB0P5kA&prev_fmts=0x0%2C1200x280&nras=3&correlator=5779986767601&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=2111087335.1629548498&ga_sid=1629548498&ga_hid=1622532617&ga_fc=0&u_tz=300&u_his=36&u_java=0&u_h=768&u_w=1366&u_ah=728&u_aw=1366&u_cd=24&u_nplug=3&u_nmime=4&adx=141&ady=1297&biw=1349&bih=657&scr_x=0&scr_y=0&eid=44747620%2C20211866%2C21067496%2C31062297&oid=3&pvsid=3016095998886694&pem=180&eae=0&fc=1408&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C1366%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C1366%2C657&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&cms=2&fu=128&bc=31&jar=2021-08-21-12&ifi=3&uci=a!3&btvi=1&fsb=1&xpc=OCY7mVH9Uz&p=https%3A//islamabadpost.com.pk&dtd=3332

Banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Majeed Brigade, had later in the day claimed responsibility for the attack.

In its statement today, the Chinese Embassy demanded Pakistan to properly treat the wounded and “conduct a thorough investigation on the attack, and severely punish the perpetrators.”

It also extended “its sincere sympathies to the injured of both countries” and expressed its deep condolences to the victims in Pakistan.

“At the same time, relevant departments at all levels in Pakistan must take practical and effective measures to accelerate to implement strengthened whole-process security measures and upgraded security cooperation mechanism to ensure that similar incidents will not happen again,” the embassy said.

The statement pointed out that the security situation in Pakistan had been severe of late as “there have been several terrorist attacks in succession, resulting in the casualties of several Chinese citizens.”

The embassy reminded the Chinese citizens in Pakistan to be “vigilant, strengthen safety precautions, reduce unnecessary outings, and take effective security protections.”https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?client=ca-pub-7078513716629609&output=html&h=280&adk=4248113910&adf=2860699456&pi=t.aa~a.2356292401~i.20~rp.4&w=696&fwrn=4&fwrnh=100&lmt=1629548502&num_ads=1&rafmt=1&armr=3&sem=mc&pwprc=2527759049&psa=1&ad_type=text_image&format=696×280&url=https%3A%2F%2Fislamabadpost.com.pk%2Fpunish-the-perpetrators-china-presses-pakistan-for-practical-measures-after-gwadar-attack%2F&flash=0&fwr=0&pra=3&rh=174&rw=696&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&wgl=1&fa=27&adsid=ChEI8MiCiQYQ1KGdxafuhfbvARJIAIrcewPPfmnXnJ-ZXLA6huZcbOEsSCqFymdS37nr8_2nieSPudnfYTAML6PM_QFFzg5m6_lCYTpaeLvPv6CWptzmhcB-AtpO&uach=WyJXaW5kb3dzIiwiNi4xIiwieDg2IiwiIiwiOTIuMC40NTE1LjE1OSIsW10sbnVsbCxudWxsLG51bGxd&tt_state=W3siaXNzdWVyT3JpZ2luIjoiaHR0cHM6Ly9hdHRlc3RhdGlvbi5hbmRyb2lkLmNvbSIsInN0YXRlIjo3fV0.&dt=1629548499034&bpp=14&bdt=3508&idt=14&shv=r20210812&mjsv=m202108190101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3D2cab8dd1d7a97507-2251d758ada700c6%3AT%3D1619371132%3ART%3D1619371132%3AS%3DALNI_MbCWjL6fpbAI7C_Q4Gb9OcZB0P5kA&prev_fmts=0x0%2C1200x280%2C696x280&nras=4&correlator=5779986767601&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=2111087335.1629548498&ga_sid=1629548498&ga_hid=1622532617&ga_fc=0&u_tz=300&u_his=36&u_java=0&u_h=768&u_w=1366&u_ah=728&u_aw=1366&u_cd=24&u_nplug=3&u_nmime=4&adx=141&ady=2149&biw=1349&bih=657&scr_x=0&scr_y=0&eid=44747620%2C20211866%2C21067496%2C31062297&oid=3&pvsid=3016095998886694&pem=180&eae=0&fc=1408&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C1366%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C1366%2C657&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&fu=128&bc=31&jar=2021-08-21-12&ifi=4&uci=a!4&btvi=2&fsb=1&xpc=q8sTOi3atY&p=https%3A//islamabadpost.com.pk&dtd=3658

China is heavily involved in the development of the Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea as part of the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is itself part of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure project.

There have been other attacks targeting Chinese nationals in the country in recent weeks.

Late last month, a Chinese engineer who had recently arrived in Karachi was shot at and wounded in a moving car by gunmen riding a motorcycle in the city’s SITE area where he was supposed to repair imported machinery. The banned Balochistan Liberation Front had claimed responsibility for that attack.

On July 14, a bus carrying Chinese workers in the Dasu area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper Kohistan district fell into a ravine after an explosion, killing 13 people, including nine Chinese nationals. The blast left 28 other people injured.

After initially suggesting that the incident was an accident, the government earlier this month said a suicide bomber had attacked the bus which was carrying Chinese workers to the under-construction Dasu dam.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said last week that India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) intelligence agencies were behind the attack.

PM commends services of foresters to make Pakistan Green

ISLAMABAD, AUG 21 (DNA) – Prime Minister Imran Khan has commended the services of foresters to make Pakistan Green.

In a tweet on Saturday, the Prime Minister said another hero of Forest Department Jamshaid Iqbal embraced Shahadat in the line of duty while fighting a forest fire in Chumurkun-Gole Protected Forest Compartment No 01. He said these are our heroes protecting our forests.

“These are our heroes protecting our forests for a Green Pakistan,” the prime minister tweeted. August marks the beginning of monsoon season in Pakistan, and with the rain comes another busy stretch for the country’s ambitious tree-planting programme.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, residents of all stripes, from government officials to Boy Scouts, fan out along the hills. They bring with them chinar tree saplings — which can grow to nearly 100 feet tall — along with other varieties, and they begin digging, the Washington Post said in its recent report.

The report mentions that it’s all part of an effort that started in 2015, when Imran Khan — then a provincial politician and now Pakistan’s prime minister — backed a programme ‘Billion Tree Tsunami’. The initiative reached its provincewide target in 2018 and was so successful that federal officials expanded the drive nationally in 2019 with a new goal of 10 billion trees — or, the “Ten Billion Tree Tsunami.”

“Everyone is waking up and starting to plant,” lawyer and environmentalist Hazrat Maaz told The Washington Post at the time. A plantanus orientalis, or “chinar” in Urdu, is planted by Mohamed Mughees Sana, deputy commissioner of Haripur, Pakistan.

The programme addresses Pakistan’s history of deforestation as the country confronts the realities of climate change in the form of hotter temperatures, melting Himalayan glaciers and intensifying monsoon rains.

“It makes us very vulnerable,” Malik Amin Aslam, federal minister for climate change, said in a recent phone call. He has overseen both the provincial and national planting campaigns. “The cheapest, most effective and quickest way to fight climate change is to plant trees,” he said.

Direct planting, Aslam explained, accounts for about 40 percent of the program’s new trees. Hundreds of thousands of people across Pakistan are working to nurture and plant 21 species, from the Chir pine to the deodar — the national tree.

The other 60 percent come from assisted regeneration, in which community members are paid to protect existing forests so that trees can propagate and thrive. Protectors are known as “nighabaan,” and 11 individuals lost their lives fighting the “timber mafia” between 2016 and 2018, according to Aslam.

Aslam says the initiative is engaging the next generation in the country’s battle against climate change. Students and volunteers plant saplings in August 2019 at Fatima Jinnah Park in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital

Students and volunteers plant saplings in August 2019 at Fatima Jinnah Park in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital. Whether planted or protected, trees capture and hold carbon dioxide — a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change — and combat erosion on steep landscapes in Pakistan that Aslam says are “almost like living on a slide.”

The latest tree “tsunami” appears to be on pace. The rate of new trees has gone up tenfold since the initiative began, Aslam said. He expects another 500 million trees by the end of this year, with a goal of around 3.2 billion by 2023. If the current ruling party is reelected, the aim is to hit 10 billion trees by 2028.

“Young people get very excited when they hear about this,” he said. “It’s their future that we’re investing in.” A local employee of the forestry department sows seeds along a road in Pakistan in April 2019.
