Addressing an event at Ghotki Degree College on Wednesday, he said that the PPP believes in public service and worked for the public welfare.

“The Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) introduced by the former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari was ridiculed but the world has appreciated the Program,” he added. “They were being taunted by rivals to make voters baggers in the name of the BISP but factually the whole world appreciated it,” said Bilawal.

He said former premier Nawaz Sharif for placing his picture on the card of the BISP and now Imran Khan had removed Benazir Bhutto Shaheed’s name from this program and renamed it as “Ehsaas Program”. Bilawal went on to say that the PPP will form next government in federation, adding that Prime Minister Imran Khan promised to build 5 million houses but the houses of the poor were demolished.

Bilawal said people were drowning in the tsunami of inflation but rulers had no feeling for it. Govt incentivizing education sector: PM

Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurates “Ehsaas Education Stipends” program at Islamabad on 1st September, 2021

Prime Minister says educated woman could contribute more positively towards the society and lauded the policy of Ehsaas Stipends programme to give higher amount to girls

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said the government was focused on providing education to all children across the country and giving incentives to prevent dropouts from schools.

Addressing at the launch of Ehsaas Education Stipends programme here, the prime minister said as over 20 million children in the country were out of schools, efforts were underway to ensure their inclusion in the educational mainstream.

The Ehsaas Education Stipends programme was aimed at providing financial assistance to the deserving households for the education of their children at primary, secondary and higher secondary levels.

Rolled out nationwide in 160 districts, the programme had been structured to give higher amount of stipend to girls as compared to boys.

The prime minister said ensuring education for all was a priority of the government, adding that stipends as incentives would be a step to encourage parents for sending their children, particularly girls to schools.

He said an educated woman could contribute more positively towards the society and lauded the policy of Ehsaas Stipends programme to give higher amount to girls.

Terming educated human resource a great asset for a nation, he said it was important to provide educational opportunities to both boys and girls.

He dismissed the impression in western world that Pakistanis did not want to educate their girls.

He recalled that during his visits to different parts of the country, he found no such parents opposing the right of education for their daughters. However, he said the factors including distant schools or unavailability of female teachers could be a reason.

Imran Khan said it was mainly the responsibility of the government to provide facilities of education to all.

He appreciated that by use of information technology, the stipends would be disbursed transparently after proper checking of fake entries and ghost schools.

The Prime Minister also announced a one-time Ehsaas graduation bonus of Rs. 3,000 to encourage girls to complete primary education. This award would be given to girl students completing Grade 5 from Ehsaas eligible families. The graduation bonus had been designed to encourage girls’ education till secondary level.

PM’ Special Assistant to Social Welfare, Dr. Sania Nishtar, said under the Ehsaas Education Stipends, the primary school boys would get quarterly stipends of Rs1, 500 and girls Rs 2,000; secondary school boys would get Rs 2,500 and girls Rs3, 000; and at higher secondary level, boys would get Rs 3,500 and girls Rs 4,000 a quarter.

She said all educational stipends would be paid biometrically to mothers on attainment of 70 percent attendance of their children.

She said as part of ‘Post-COVID-Ehsaas Strategy’, Ehsaas Education Stipends would empower the deserving families to overcome financial barriers in accessing higher education.

Poverty was one of the most persistent barriers to acquiring education. Presently, there were 18.7 million children in the age group of 6 to 16 who remain out of school in the country and the fall out of COVID-19 has also accentuated it.

The Education Conditional Cash Transfers were an important pillar of Ehsaas and are included in the Ehsaas framework as Policy #73 ‘Education Conditional Cash Transfers’.

The Education Conditional Cash Transfers (CCT) served the dual purpose of socially assisting vulnerable households and at the same time reduced the number of out of school children, which was an important outcome for Pakistan as there were approximately 18.7 million out-of-school children in the country.

Pakistan had been running an Education Conditional Cash Transfer for primary school going children called Waseela-e-Taleem since 2012 in selected districts. The programme encountered a number of challenges including high administrative cost charged by Non-Government Organizations that were administering the programme, high error and fraud due to the programme being paper-based, weak compliance monitoring, limited human resource to enroll students into the programme and low stipend amount being given to children.

Israeli army demolishes 2 Palestinian homes in West Bank

Israeli army forces on Wednesday demolished two homes and a well north of the occupied West Bank, citing lack of building permits.

Sulaiman Dawabsha, the head of the local council of Duma town in Nablus city, told Anadolu Agency that an Israeli force raided the village and demolished two houses built several years ago, and a well to collect rainwater.

He noted that the demolitions were carried out under the pretext of “building without a permit.”

Israel blocks Palestinians from building in Area C, which it seeks to annex.

Under the 1995 Oslo Accords, the West Bank was divided into three areas: A, B and C.

Area A represents 18% of the West Bank and is controlled by the Palestinian Authority in terms of security and administration.

Area B represents 21% of the West Bank and is subject to Palestinian civil administration and Israeli security control, while Area C, which represents 61% of the West Bank, is under Israeli civil and security control.

Major power breakdown hits Karachi

KARACHI: Karachi is experiencing a major power breakdown with around 70% of the city losing electricity.

This is the third major power breakdown in the city this year, the TV said.

Several parts of the city are without power including North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, North Karachi, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Qaidabad, and Shah Faisal Town.

The power supply to Dhabeji, Gharo, and Pipri pumping stations has been suspended as well. According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, this may lead to a water shortage in the city too.

The cause of the breakdown was not immediately clear but some reports suggest that increasing demand has led to power failure as the system could not cope with the load.

The temperature rose to 40 celsius on Wednesday, according to Met Office.

The K-Electric has confirmed “reports of interruption” in a series of tweets and said it was monitoring the situation.

“We are in contact with the teams of NTDC (National Transmission and Despatch Company),” a KE spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the power breakdown was not limited to Karachi and other cities in Sindh such as Jamshoro, Matiari, and Tando Muhammad Khan have also been affected.

In Hyderabad, the electricity supply to 71 HESCO grid stations has been suspended.

Later, the Ministry of Power tweeted that the total supply to K-Electric from the National Transmission and Despatch Company has been restored.

Pakistan announces 20-player ODI squad for New Zealand series

Rawalpindi : Pakistan cricket selectors have named a 20-player squad for the three ICC Cricket World Cup Super League One-Day Internationals against New Zealand, which will be played in Rawalpindi on 17, 19 and 21 September.

Uncapped wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris, fast bowlers Mohammad Wasim and Shahnawaz Dahani, and wrist-spinner Zahid Mahmood have been named in the squad, while middle-order batters Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah have been recalled.

Iftikhar’s seventh and last ODI was against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi, while Khushdil’s only ODI appearance was also in the tied match against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi.

Players who were part of the ODI series against England in July but have failed to retain their places include Haris Sohail, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Sohaib Maqsood.

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim said the series against New Zealand is “extremely important” for Pakistan as the matches are part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 qualification.

“While we have tried to put together a formidable and balanced unit, we have continued to ensure that we give opportunities to high performing players while looking into the future so that we can develop strong bench strength,” he said.

“Shahnawaz Dahani was unfortunate to miss the selection for the England matches as the squad was announced before the start of the remaining 20 HBL PSL 6 matches. Hence, he was a straightforward selection when we sat to discuss and finalise the side for the New Zealand series. We have also given a continued run to Mohammad Wasim, who impressed everyone in the T20Is against the West Indies.”

He added that Zahid Mahmood has been added to support Usman Qadir.

“While picking him, we took into consideration that he had excelled last time he played in a white-ball match in Lahore against South Africa. Although this time the format will be different, in domestic 50-over competitions he has shown through his performances that he has the temperament to also perform in ODIs.”

He continued: “Mohammad Rizwan remains the first-choice wicketkeeper, as such, it has been decided to include 20-year-old Mohammad Haris in place of Sarfaraz Ahmed.”

This is not only to reward Haris for his outstanding domestic performances in the previous season but also to give him a taste and flair of international cricket along with its rigours and demands and to ensure that we continue to groom young wicketkeepers who are fit and ready to step up when the opportunity presents itself, he said.

“Middle-order has remained our concern and, as such, after trying a few options, we have decided to give another run to Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah, The two batters have played sufficient 50-over cricket at the domestic level and boast the required firepower to utilise the slog overs. We are optimistic they will come good in home conditions.”

“I know a few players will feel disappointed at missing out on the selection but we have a busy season of cricket ahead, which means there will be ample opportunities down the line for everyone to put up strong performances and push their case for national selection.”

Pakistan ODI squad:

Babar Azam (captain, Central Punjab), Abdullah Shafique (Central Punjab), Faheem Ashraf (Central Punjab), Fakhar Zaman (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Haris Rauf (Northern), Hasan Ali (Central Punjab), Iftikhar Ahmed (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Imam-ul-Haq (Balochistan), Khushdil Shah (Southern Punjab), Mohammad Haris (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mohammad Hasnain (Sindh), Mohammad Nawaz (Northern), Mohammad Rizwan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mohammad Wasim Jnr (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Saud Shakeel (Sindh), Shadab Khan (Northern), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Shahnawaz Dahani (Sindh), Usman Qadir (Central Punjab) and Zahid Mahmood (Southern Punjab)
