Govt decides against increasing petroleum prices despite surge in global oil rates

ISLAMABAD, MAR 13: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced that the government decided against increasing petroleum product prices despite surge in global oil rates, saying the move aimed to ease financial burden on citizens.

The statement comes as the federal government was scheduled to review the fuel prices on March 13 (today).

On March 6, the government had raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre each as surging global oil prices, fuelled by the US Israel war with Iran, put pressure on domestic energy costs.

At the time, the petroleum minister said that the government would reduce prices promptly once the situation improved.

However, PM Shehbaz said today that the ongoing regional tensions are keeping the global economy under pressure, which could significantly affect Pakistan’s financial stability, state media reported.

“Through timely policy-making and strict fiscal discipline, we are striving to manage the situation effectively,” he added.

The premier said that the government was making efforts to deliver as much relief to the public as possible.

He added that the government was taking austerity and fuel-conserving measures to shield citizens from rising costs.

The sharp increase in the domestic petroleum prices and another potential hike in the global oil prices led the government to announce an austerity plan.

In an address to the nation on March 9, the prime minister said the measures were necessary to deal with the prevailing global fuel crisis triggered by the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict.

PM Shehbaz then announced that both the federal and provincial governments would adopt austerity and simplicity to reduce expenditures and conserve energy during the challenging economic situation.

The measures included cutting government expenditures, reducing the working week to four days, and reducing non-essential movement.

Turkey reports third Iranian missile interception

Turkey reports third Iranian missile interception

ANKARA, MAR 13 /DNA/ – Turkey’s Ministry of National Defense announced that NATO air and missile defense assets (deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean) intercepted and neutralized a third ballistic missile launched from Iran that entered Turkish airspace.

No casualties or significant damage were reported. This follows similar incidents on March 4 (first interception en route to Turkish airspace) and March 9 (second, which entered airspace before being downed).

Ankara has demanded clarification from Tehran on these “provocative” incidents, amid fears of escalation drawing NATO further into the conflict. Earlier interceptions involved systems like the US Navy’s SM-3 missiles from Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.Trump claims Iran is “about to surrender” in G7 call According to Axios (citing officials from three G7 countries briefed on a virtual G7 leaders’ meeting Wednesday), US President Donald Trump told allies that Iran is “about to surrender.”

He reportedly boasted about the war’s progress under “Operation Epic Fury,” claiming massive damage to Iranian targets and suggesting few officials remain in Tehran with authority to decide on continuing the fight.

Trump has made similar optimistic statements in recent interviews, saying the war could end “any time I want it to end” due to “practically nothing left” to target, while insisting on unconditional surrender.US CENTCOM reports deaths in refueling aircraft crash in Iraq.

US Central Command confirmed that four of the six crew members aboard a KC-135 Stratotanker (aerial refueling aircraft) were killed after it crashed in western Iraq on Thursday during operations supporting the Iran conflict.

Rescue efforts continue for the remaining two personnel. The incident involved two aircraft (the second landed safely) and was described as “not due to hostile fire or friendly fire”—possibly an accident like a mid-air collision during refueling.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (an Iran-backed group) claimed responsibility for shooting it down, though US officials disputed that.

This brings US military fatalities in the war to at least 11. These events highlight the conflict’s spillover risks, including threats to NATO territory (via Turkey) and US assets in the region, while Trump projects confidence in a swift resolution amid heavy ongoing strikes. Oil prices remain elevated, and regional tensions continue to rise.

PM Shehbaz visits Saudi Arabia to De-escalate tensions

PM Shehbaz visits Saudi Arabia to De-escalate tensions

ISLAMABAD, MAR 13 /DNA/ – As the Middle East enters its third week of intensifying conflict, Pakistan has launched a full-court diplomatic press, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif embarking on a critical one-day visit to Saudi Arabia on Thursday. The visit underscores Islamabad’s urgent push for de-escalation and a return to dialogue in a region reeling from a series of armed attacks and rising tensions.

According to a press briefing by the Foreign Office spokesperson, the Prime Minister, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, will meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh. The visit is framed as part of ongoing high-level coordination between the longtime allies on matters of regional peace and security, with a specific focus on “ending violence and hostilities.”

This diplomatic mission follows a flurry of telephone diplomacy by the Pakistani leadership over the past two weeks, engaging with counterparts across the region and beyond.

A Region on Edge

The current wave of hostilities, which the Foreign Office traced back to February 28, began with an Israeli attack on Iran, followed by retaliatory strikes and subsequent attacks involving several Gulf nations, as well as Türkiye and Azerbaijan. The briefing painted a picture of a volatile situation, with Pakistan expressing serious concern over “unprovoked attacks” that it said “constitute blatant violations of the sovereignty of the brotherly Gulf States.”

Pakistan has officially condemned the initial attacks on Iran, while also strongly condemning Iranian retaliatory strikes on Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE. The conflict has already had direct consequences for Pakistan, with the Foreign Office confirming the deaths of two Pakistani nationals in the UAE and initiating efforts to repatriate their remains.

A Whirlwind of Diplomacy

The briefing detailed an exhaustive list of high-level calls made by both Prime Minister Sharif and Deputy PM Dar over the last 12 days, revealing Pakistan’s multifaceted effort to navigate the crisis.

  • With Gulf Nations: The Prime Minister has spoken with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait, reaffirming Pakistan’s “full solidarity and support” and underscoring the “need for maximum restraint.”
  • With Iran: In a significant move, PM Sharif spoke with Iranian President Masood Pezeshkian on Wednesday. The conversation included condolences on the reported martyrdom of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and congratulations to his successor, His Eminence Mojtaba Khamenei. Deputy PM Dar has spoken with his Iranian counterpart three times since the crisis began.
  • With Others Affected: The Prime Minister condemned Israeli aggression against Lebanon in a call with its Prime Minister and strongly denounced drone attacks on Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave in a conversation with President Ilham Aliyev.
  • Broader Engagement: The diplomatic outreach has extended beyond the immediate conflict zone, with calls to the leaders of Türkiye, Malaysia, Egypt, Canada, China, and Bangladesh, as well as the Commonwealth Secretary-General and the GCC.

Ensuring Citizen Safety

Amid the diplomatic push, the government has activated a Crisis Management Unit (CMU) at the Foreign Ministry. Special facilitation desks have been set up at Pakistan’s missions abroad to assist stranded nationals with visas, logistics, and travel arrangements. The Prime Minister has issued clear directives to prioritize community assistance, with missions launching dedicated apps, registration portals, and helplines.

Concern Over Canada-India Nuclear Deal

In a separate but significant statement, Pakistan expressed strong concern over the long-term uranium supply agreement between Canada and India. The Foreign Office criticized the deal as another “country-specific exception” in civil nuclear cooperation.

“It is particularly ironic given that India’s 1974 nuclear test, conducted using plutonium produced in a reactor supplied by Canada for peaceful purposes, had led directly to the establishment of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG),” the spokesperson stated.

Pakistan argued that the deal allows India to use its domestic uranium for military purposes, thereby expanding its nuclear arsenal and destabilizing the strategic balance in South Asia. Islamabad reiterated its call for a non-discriminatory, criteria-based approach for civil nuclear cooperation with non-signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The two dignitaries engaged in a detailed discussion on various matters of mutual interest, with a particular focus on enhancing cooperation in the fields of science, technology, and innovation.

According to a statement issued following the meeting, both sides reiterated their commitment to fostering stronger linkages between Pakistani and Jordanian scientific institutions. UN refugee agency says up to 3.2 million people in Iran have been displaced by the war

DUBAI, MAR 12 /DNA/: Up to 3.2 million people have been displaced inside Iran since the Middle East war erupted, the United Nations refugee agency said Thursday.

“Between 600,000 and one million Iranian households are now temporarily displaced inside Iran as a result of the ongoing conflict, according to preliminary assessments,” said Ayaki Ito, who heads UNHCR’s emergency support team and is the refugee response coordinator for the Middle East emergency.

That represents “up to 3.2 million people,” he said in a statement, warning that “this figure is likely to continue rising as hostilities persist, marking a worrying escalation in humanitarian needs.”

The United States and Israel launched the first wave of attacks on February 28 in a war that has seen Iran strike targets in multiple countries around the Gulf.

Ito said that most of those displaced were reportedly “fleeing from Tehran and other major urban areas toward the north of the country and rural areas to seek safety.”

Refugee families hosted in the country, most of them Afghans, had also been affected, he said, warning that they were “particularly vulnerable, given their already precarious situation and limited support networks.”

“Families are leaving affected areas amid rising insecurity and limited access to essential services,” he said.

The UN refugee agency, which has had a longstanding presence in Iran, said it was “adapting its response to growing needs, working with national authorities and partners to assess emerging requirements and strengthen preparedness as population movements increase.”

“UNHCR emphasizes the urgent need to protect civilians, maintain humanitarian access, and ensure borders remain open to those seeking safety, in line with international obligations,” Ito said.

Eid ul Fitr 2026 in Pakistan likely to fall on March 21: Suparco

Eid ul Fitr 2026 in Pakistan likely to fall on March 21: Suparco

ISLAMABAD, MAR 11: Eid ul Fitr 2026 is likely to fall on March 21 in Pakistan after a 30-day Ramadan, with experts saying the chances of sighting the Shawwal crescent on the evening of March 19 are low.

“The new moon of Shawwal 1447 AH is expected to be born on March 19, 2026, at 06:23 PST,” the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) said on Wednesday.

“At the time of sunset on March 19, 2026, the age of the new moon will be approximately 12 hours and 41 minutes, with an estimated 28-minute interval between sunset and moonset along Pakistan’s coastal belt,” it added.

Based on these astronomical parameters, the Suparco said, the chances of sighting the Shawwal crescent on the evening of March 19 were “low”.

The first Shawwal is therefore anticipated to fall on Saturday, March 21, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan.

However, Suparco said the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan will make the final decision regarding the sighting of the crescent and the commencement of Eid ul Fitr across the country.

The Muslim world welcomes Eid ul Fitr with deep religious devotion, after over a billion believers fast for a month to practice patience, self-discipline, and generosity.

Pakistan began the first fast of Ramadan 2026 on February 19, following the announcement of the crescent moon sighting by Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad.

Islamic months last 29 or 30 days, with their start and end determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, so Ramadan does not fall on the same Gregorian date each year.

As the ninth month of the 12-month Islamic calendar — which is about 10 days shorter than the Gregorian year due to its lunar basis — Ramadan shifts annually across the Gregorian calendar.

Dominant Bangladesh beat Pakistan by eight wickets in first ODI

Dominant Bangladesh beat Pakistan by eight wickets in first ODI

DHAKA: Tanzid Hasan scored an exceptional fifty after a brilliant bowling display by Bangladesh helped them crush Pakistan by eight wickets in the opening one-day international at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The hosts comfortably chased Pakistan’s 115-run target, losing just two wickets in 15.1 overs, powered by a stellar performance from the Tigers’ top order.

Bangladesh got off to a solid start as openers Saif Hassan and Tanzid set the tone, with Tanzid leading the scoring while targeting Shaheen Afridi and Faheem Ashraf in the early overs.

The 27-run partnership was broken when Afridi dismissed Saif for four off 10 deliveries.

After the breakthrough, Tanzid and Najmul Hossain Shanto combined to build a commanding partnership, hitting boundaries and taking the team past the 50-run mark by the seventh over.

The duo put together a fifty-run stand, dominating Pakistan’s bowling by continuously hitting sixes and fours.

Tanzid continued his batting prowess, staying in top form and scoring his fifth ODI half-century, putting Bangladesh at 92-1 in 12 overs.

However, the 82-run partnership ended when Wasim Jr struck, taking the key wicket of Shanto, who scored 27 off 33 deliveries with five boundaries.

The Bengal Tigers wrapped up the innings with Tanzid unbeaten on 67 off 42 deliveries, hitting seven fours and five sixes, while Litton Das contributed three runs.

Batting first, Pakistan got off to a promising start as the new opening pair of Maaz Sadaqat and Sahibzada Farhan set the tone with runs flowing quickly to give the visitors an ideal beginning.

However, the 41-run stand was broken when pacer Nahid Rana struck, dismissing Farhan who scored 27 off 38 balls, including four boundaries in the final over of the first powerplay.

Nahid struck again in the 12th over, removing debutant Shamyl Hussain who failed to contribute, scoring four off seven deliveries, leaving the team at 47-2 in 11.3 overs.

Pakistan struggled to preserve their wickets and kept losing them in quick succession as opener Maaz was sent back by Rana, scoring 18 off 28 balls with three fours.

Mohammad Rizwan was the next to fall, adding pressure on the Green Shirts, with Rana claiming yet another wicket; Rizwan contributed 10 off 20 deliveries, including two boundaries, leaving the team at 64-4 in 15.5 overs.

Rana picked up his fifth wicket, dismantling Pakistan’s batting order as Salman Ali Agha fell cheaply for five off eight balls, with a boundary to his name.

The Green Shirts were six down, with Bangladesh growing in confidence as Mehidy Hasan Miraz dismissed Abdul Samad for a six-ball duck, leaving Pakistan struggling at 70-6 in 19 overs.

Pakistan’s wickets continued to tumble as Mehidy Hasan struck again, claiming his second wicket by removing Hussain Talat for four off 13 deliveries.

In the same over, skipper Shaheen Afridi came to the crease and hit a boundary in an attempt to relieve the pressure, but his stay was brief as he was LBW to Mehidy Hasan for a run-a-ball four, leaving the team reeling at 81-8 in 22.5 overs.

Taskin Ahmed joined the attack and claimed his first wicket of the game by dismissing Wasim Jr for a duck. Faheem Ashraf held firm and added crucial runs to take his side past the 100-run mark in the 26th over.

However, Mustafizur Rahman struck to dismiss Faheem, claiming his first wicket of the match, and contributed 37 runs off 47 balls, including six fours and one six, to close the innings.

Nahid Rana tore through Pakistan’s batting lineup with a brilliant 5/24 in seven overs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took three wickets, while Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed claimed one wicket each.
