Fish demand rises in Multan as Winter sets in

MULTAN, Dec 29: With the onset of winter, fish markets in Multan have witnessed a significant surge in activity as demand for fresh fish continues to rise amid falling temperatures.

From morning till evening, major fish markets across the city remain crowded with buyers, while vendors are seen busy catering to the increased demand. Traders say the trend is a regular feature of the winter season, as residents prefer fish for both its taste and health benefits during cold weather.

Fish vendor Muhammad Nawaz told APP that demand for fish increases every year as winter intensifies. “As the temperature drops, people consume more fish. It is widely liked in winter, which leads to higher sales,” he said, adding that a variety of fresh fish is currently available in the market, attracting a large number of customers.

A customer, Muhammad Hussain, said that fish consumption becomes routine for his family during winter. “Fish tastes even better in cold weather, and freshly cooked hot fish at home is truly enjoyable,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, nutritionist Dr Laiba, while speaking to APP, highlighted the health benefits of fish consumption during winter. She said fish is rich in protein, which provides energy and helps strengthen the immune system in cold weather. “Fish is also beneficial for heart patients; however, it should be consumed in moderation and preferably cooked with less oil,” she advised.

With the arrival of winter, Multan’s fish markets are not only bustling with buyers but are also meeting both taste and health needs, as fish continues to be a popular and nutritious choice among the public during the cold season.

Pak conflict with India, Afghanistan may escalate into clashes

American think tank warns rising regional flashpoints could threaten global peace next year

Centreline Report

ISLAMABAD: According to the report, renewed armed conflict between Pakistan and India carries a moderate likelihood and moderate impact over Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which could push both nuclear-armed neighbours back towards military confrontation.

The report cautioned that escalating violence and coercive policies in occupied Kashmir could once again lead to direct military clashes between Islamabad and New Delhi, posing serious risks to regional stability.

Pakistan and India went to war in May after India launched an unprovoked attack on Pakistan following the attack on tourists in the IIOJK.

New Delhi maintains that the terrorists who killed 26 tourists in IIOJK’s Pahalgam were Pakistanis — a charge that Islamabad has denied and has also asked India to partake in a neutral investigation.

Pakistan, during the 87-hour conflict, downed its six fighter jets, including three Rafale, and dozens of drones. The war between the two nuclear-armed nations ended on May 10 with a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States.

The think tank also flagged the risk of renewed Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict, citing resurgent cross-border militant attacks from the Afghan border as a trigger. It assessed this scenario as having moderate likelihood but low impact, warning that continued instability could inflame tensions between the two neighbours.

Islamabad and Kabul engaged in border clashes in October after the Afghan Taliban and militants launched unprovoked attacks against Pakistan’s border posts.

The resulting clashes led to the killing of over 200 Taliban and affiliated militants, while 23 Pakistani soldiers were martyred defending the motherland.

Pakistan also conducted “precision strikes” deep inside Afghanistan, targeting terrorists in Kandahar province and Kabul. However, despite many rounds of talks, both countries failed to reach a ceasefire due tothe  Afghan Taliban regime’s reluctance to take action against terrorist outfits.

Beyond South Asia, the CFR identified Israeli violence in Gaza and the West Bank as one of the world’s most dangerous conflicts, alongside the Russia-Ukraine war, the possibility of US military action in Venezuela, and rising political violence within the United States itself.

The report warned that these conflicts collectively could pose serious threats to global peace and US national security in the coming year.

Beijing warns Japan’s ‘new militarism’ poses threat to global peace

Beijing warns Japan's 'new militarism' poses threat to global peace

BEIJING, DEC 29: This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Japan, as a defeated nation in World War II, should have engaged in deep reflection on the grave crimes committed by militarism.

Yet some individuals and forces in Japan continue to intensify efforts to distort historical facts, whitewash wartime atrocities, and even overturn established judgments on Japan’s war of aggression. More alarmingly, there are attempts to rehabilitate militarist ideologies.

Such actions directly contradict the international community’s shared understanding of history, gravely violate international consensus and human conscience, seriously endanger regional and global peace and stability, and challenge the postwar international order.

In early November, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi publicly claimed during a Diet session that a so-called “Taiwan contingency” could constitute a “survival-threatening situation” allowing Japan to exercise the right of collective self-defense.

This marks the first time since Japan’s defeat in 1945 that a sitting leader has formally advanced the notion that “a contingency for Taiwan is a contingency for Japan” while linking it to the exercise of the right of collective self-defense.

It is also the first time Japan has expressed ambitions to intervene militarily in the Taiwan question and the first time Japan has issued a threat of force against China.

The term “survival-threatening situation” evokes historical rhetoric used by Japanese militarism. Historically, when pursuing expansion, Japanese militarists habitually portrayed Japan as an oppressed nation with no alternative, distorting facts to mobilize domestic support. Once conditions permitted, they launched wars without regard for opponents, consequences, declarations, or means. Militarist mindset continues to enable reckless statements and actions by Japan’s current leadership.

Japanese militarism drove Japan’s wars of aggression and remains the ideological foundation for postwar right-wing forces.

Since modern times, toxic elements of emperor-centered nationalism, Bushido, and Shinto were systematically exploited and reshaped by Japanese ruling class. This was further combined with problematic Western ideologies like social Darwinism to serve militarist ambitions.

Given militarism’s devastating legacy, postwar arrangements explicitly deprived Japan of war-making rights and sought to institutionally eliminate foundations for renewed aggression.

However, Japan never conducted a thorough reckoning with its militarist past. Over eight decades, right-wing politicians have cloaked militarism as “democracy,” “rule of law,” and “security,” fabricating a self-contradictory logic of “new militarism.”

Politically, they have steadily hollowed out the Pacifist Constitution and accelerated the rightward drift of society. Militarily, under the pretext of “self-defense,” they have pursued unchecked arms expansion. Culturally, they have promoted historical revisionism, attempting to indoctrinate younger generations through distorted education. Diplomatically, while posturing as a “regional security guardian,” they have repeatedly stirred up disputes.

This so-called “new militarism” has severely damaged China-Japan relations, undermined regional stability, and caused tangible harm to Japan and its citizens.

Japan bears heavy and undeniable historical responsibility regarding the Taiwan question. Through the four political documents between China and Japan, Japan has made clear political commitments on Taiwan. The remarks and actions of Takaichi disregard these established commitments and seriously erode the political foundation of mutual trust between China and Japan.

Sergei Shoigu, secretary of the Russian Federation Security Council, pointed out that Takaichi’s adherence to historical revisionism contradicts Japan’s stated desire to normalize relations with Russia, given its repeated anti-Russian rhetoric. As Japan’s defense budget hits new highs for 2026, Japanese citizens have angrily labeled the resulting tax hikes and cuts to social spending as a “life-shortening military expansion.”

The erroneous remarks and actions by Takaichi and others are by no means isolated incidents. In recent years, Japan has increased its defense spending for thirteen consecutive years, loosened restrictions on the exercise of collective self-defense, repeatedly eased controls on arms exports, pursued so-called “counterstrike capabilities,” and even sought to revise the Three Non-Nuclear Principles.

Step by step, these moves hollow out the provisions concerning Japan set forth in the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, while violating commitments enshrined in Japan’s constitution. “New militarism” is posing a real and growing threat to global peace and development.

If such conduct is not corrected, it risks setting a dangerous precedent for other countries, potentially encouraging other actors to challenge established international rules and order. This would fundamentally undermine global governance structures and erode core principles of international relations such as sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs, with far-reaching consequences for regional and global stability.

The “lingering specter” of Japanese militarism is a real and urgent danger. Should Japan persist on this misguided path, all countries and peoples committed to justice have the right to re-examine Japan’s historical crimes and the responsibility to firmly prevent the revival of militarism. This is a shared bottom line for the international community in safeguarding the postwar international order and a fundamental test of whether Japan itself can sustain peaceful development.

PLA’s “Justice Mission 2025” intended to deter separatists: Beijing

PLA's

BEIJING, DEC 29: The relevant military actions by the PLA serve as a stern warning to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and external interference forces, and as a necessary and just move to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, said Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, when commenting on the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) launching the “Justice Mission 2025” exercise on Monday.

The Lai Ching-te authorities are engaging in “Taiwan independence” separatist activities, currying favor with foreign forces without principles and selling out Taiwan without bottom lines. They are willing to sacrifice Taiwan’s economic development and people’s well-being as they recklessly rush down the evil path of colluding with external forces to seek “independence,” provoking confrontation and pursuing militarization, Chen said, noting that this has seriously undermined cross-Straits relations, gravely threatened peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, and severely harmed the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and the vital interests of Taiwan compatriots. We will never tolerate or condone any “Taiwan independence” separatist acts, and will resolutely strike them.

Chen noted that Taiwan is China’s Taiwan. Any external forces that attempt to intervene in the Taiwan question or interfere in China’s internal affairs will inevitably crash headlong into the steel wall of the Chinese PLA. The historical trend toward national reunification is unstoppable. No one should underestimate our firm resolve, unwavering will, or strong capability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, the spokesperson said.

Chen said that compatriots on both sides of the Straits are one family. The relevant military actions are directed at “Taiwan independence” secessionist activities and external interference, and are intended to deter “Taiwan independence” separatist forces from colluding with external forces to destabilize the Taiwan Straits, fundamentally safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and the vital interests of Taiwan compatriots. They are by no means targeted at the vast majority of Taiwan compatriots.

Chen expressed the hope that Taiwan compatriots will clearly recognize the extreme danger and harm of the Lai authorities’ “Taiwan independence” secessionist line, and will join us in resolutely opposing “Taiwan independence” secession and external interference, steadfastly safeguarding the shared home of the Chinese nation, and working together to create a bright future of national reunification and national rejuvenation.
