Twenty first century is witnessing a raid rise in urbanization across the whole world. Around fifty percent of the world population lives in the cities and the percentage is expected to grow even further in the near future. There is no doubt that urban centers provide better opportunities in terms of growth, social transformation, and innovation yet it also brings challenges like shortage of houses, climate vulnerabilities, social problems, and stress on health and education facilities. In order to manage such challenges, the UN Human Settlement Plan commonly known as the UN-Habitat, has established the World Urban Forum to provide a global platform for the sustainable urban development.

Twelve such forums have been conducted so far and the thirteenth Forum is planned during 17 to 22 May in Baku, Azerbaijan. Theme of 2026 forum is Housing the World: Safe and Resilient Cities and Communities. Azerbaijan has been striving for the sustainable development, urban modernization, and international engagement for a long period of time, and this forum will complement Baku’s aspirations to achieve these goals.

The Global Importance of the World Urban Forum

A Platform for Global Dialogue on Urbanization

The World Urban Forum was established in 2002 to support better urban development and governance. The Forum meets after every two years to discuss the ideas to manage urbanization effectively. It is a non legislative forum attended by stakeholders like the civil society, urban planner, city management, policy makers, and private sector. The Forum tries to foster global cooperation and support in the fields like infrastructure deficits, housing shortages, climate change and environmental issues, urban inequality, and population growth. Through dialogue and knowledge sharing, the forum allows countries and cities to learn from each other’s experiences and adopt innovative solutions to these challenges.

Advancing the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development

Under the patronage of UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat-III), the WUF monitors the progress on implementation of New Urban Agenda. Habitat-III serves as a guide to sustainable Urban development. This forum also contributes in implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) particularly SDG 11which aims to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. The WUF meetings assess the progress as well as suggest measures regarding urban planning and development. Agenda for the 13th WUF in Baku is to discuss the growing urbanization which has led to the housing crises in urban centers across the world. Since, there is also a growing trend of urbanization in Azerbaijan, this forum will complement national urban policies with the global sustainable goals.

Promoting Innovation and Urban Partnerships

WUF also serves as a platform for partnership across different regions and sectors. Although, conducted under the official patronage of government, it also includes local government representatives, city governments, private investors and builders, civil society, and academicians and researchers. Such diverse participation makes it a unique forum. Such multilevel interactions always bring innovative solutions to the growing urban challenges. This forum also helps in showcasing of different case studies and successful urban development projects. Furthermore, exchange of ideas particularly in the areas like smart cities, climate resilient urban planning, and green infrastructure, are also materialized.

WUF13 in Baku: A Landmark Global Event

Azerbaijan has successfully brought international attention towards itself due to rational and global friendly policies. Holding of COP-29 and now WUF-13 reflect the significant moment for Azerbaijan’s foreign policy. As expected, participants from diverse background and across the world will be attending the Forum. This will help Baku to further strengthen its foreign policy and project its soft image to the international community. The best part of the Forum is that heads of the states and governments will also have a summit during the Forum. This will be the first ever such activity under WUF-13. This initiative underscores the increasing recognition that urbanization is not merely a local issue but a strategic global priority linked to economic development, climate resilience, and social stability.

Azerbaijan’s Development Vision and Urban Transformation

Urban Development as a National Priority

Azerbaijan is committed to develop the urban infrastructure as per the global standards, for which Baku has initiatives like green cities projects to achieve the sustainable urban development. Many projects to improve the housing, public transport, and other services have already been initiated. For the sake of urban development, it has officially declared 2026 as the “Year of Urban Planning and Development.” WUF13 in Baku compliments the national agenda of Azerbaijan’s seriousness towards sustainable urban development as an important strategic priority. Hosting WUF13 aligns closely with this national agenda by providing an international platform to showcase Azerbaijan’s urban transformation and development initiatives.

Reconstruction and Smart Cities Initiatives

Azerbaijan has also undertaken major reconstruction projects in regions affected by past conflicts, focusing on building modern, environmentally sustainable settlements. New cities and villages are being designed with energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy systems, and climate-resilient infrastructure. This policy reflects Azerbaijan’s commitment towards a “new generation of sustainable urban settlements” which focuses on the economic development while integrating the environmental sustainability with that. Such efforts will be complemented by the hosting of World Urban Forum in Baku this year.

This forum in Azerbaijan will complement Baku’s commitment as an active participant in the debates on topics like urban governance as well as sustainable development. After the successful hosting of COP 29 from 11-24 November 2024 in Baku, this event will further help Azerbaijan in reinforcing its reputation for the conduct of major global events. The hosting of WUF13 also demonstrates the country’s growing capacity to facilitate large-scale international events and contribute to global policy dialogues. It will also reinforce Azerbaijan’s soft power by enhancing its global visibility.

Promoting Investment and Economic Opportunities

Ince, WUF13 will be attended by multinational companies alongwith renewed developers, this Forum will help Azerbaijan to attract significant foreign direct investment not only in the smart cities and villages projects but also in other fields as well. Expected influx of thousands of participants will stimulate the industries like tourism, services, transportation, hospitality, and even the event managements as well as conduct of different conferences. It will further help Azerbaijan to attract substantial investment in the fields of real estate, urban development, and infrastructure. Such participation will help the country to develop a more inclusive, sustainable, and participatory urban planning.

The WUF13 in Baku is going to serve as a platform for the improved urban planning in Azerbaijan meeting the international standards. It will also serve as a platform for intensive linkages and continuous collaboration with global institutions and urban development agencies. Furthermore, this Forum will be helpful to integrate Azerbaijan’s initiatives with the global sustainability initiatives such as green urban development and climate resilience. Similarly, this Forum will help Baku to collaborate with global academic and research institutions in the fields or urban development and architecture. Bangladesh name 15-member squad for first Pakistan Test

ISLAMABAD, APR 27: The Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced a 15-player squad for the first Test against Pakistan, scheduled to begin on May 8 at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.

The match will be part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle, with Bangladesh aiming to improve their position in the standings.

Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as Bangladesh’s Test captain for the opening match against Pakistan. All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been named vice-captain for the Dhaka Test.

Bangladesh currently sit eighth in the World Test Championship standings and will look to gain valuable points against Pakistan in the two-match series.

Bangladesh squad for first Test
The 15-member Bangladesh squad includes a mix of experienced players, returning bowlers and two uncapped names.

Bangladesh squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque Showrab, Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Kumer Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury, Shoriful Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana, Tanzid Hasan and Amite Hasan.

Two uncapped players, Tanzid Hasan and Amite Hasan, have been included in the squad for the first Test.

Tanzid Hasan has already made his mark in Bangladesh’s white-ball setup, having played 34 ODIs and 45 T20Is. He has scored more than 1,900 runs across both formats and will now look to establish himself in the red-ball side.

Amite Hasan, a 24-year-old middle-order batter, has also earned a place in the squad. He averages 49 in First-Class cricket after making his debut in 2019.

Taskin, Shoriful and Nayeem return
Fast bowlers Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam have returned to Bangladesh’s Test squad. Both last featured in the red-ball format in late 2024 and will strengthen the pace attack against Pakistan.

Spinner Nayeem Hasan has also made his return to the Test set-up, adding another option to Bangladesh’s bowling unit alongside Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Pakistan Test series schedule
The first Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan will be played from May 8 to 12 at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.

The second Test is scheduled from May 16 to 20 at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet.

Both matches are part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

President felicitates South African leadership on National Day

ISLAMABAD, APR 27 (DNA): President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday extended felicitations to President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa, on the occasion of their National Day, annually observed on April 27.

In a message on behalf of the government and the people of Pakistan, the president, who is currently on a five-day visit to China, said that Pakistan attached great importance to its cordial relations with South Africa, which were rooted in shared values, mutual trust, and a common commitment to peace, development and multilateral cooperation.

He also recalled the principled stance of Pakistan during the apartheid years, when, as early as 1948, Pakistan refused to recognise the apartheid regime along with Zionist Israel.

The older generation still remembers the stamp on Pakistani passports saying not valid for (apartheid) South Africa and Israel, the president recalled, which continued till 1994 when apartheid ended in South Africa.

President Zardari expressed his confidence that the existing ties between the two countries would continue to grow in the years ahead, bringing greater prosperity and well-being to the people of both nations.=DNA

Pakistan, China ink MoUs to boost tea sector cooperation, agri technology, desalination

BEIJING, APR 27: Pakistan and China on Monday signed three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of desalination, agricultural technology and the tea industry.

President Asif Ali Zardari, who is on a five-day visit to China, witnessed the signing of the MoUs between Pakistani and Chinese entities.

The first MoU was concluded between the local government, the Government of Sindh and Lucion Environmental Technology Group for collaboration on a seawater desalination project in Karachi aimed at increasing the city’s supply of water.

The MoU was signed from the Pakistani side by Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh Senior Minister and from the Chinese side by Yuhui, Secretary of the Party Branch and Chairman of Lucion Environmental Technology Group.

The second MoU between the local government, the Government of Sindh and Long Ping Hi-tech Information Company for cooperation in agricultural technology was signed by Sharjeel Inam Memon on behalf of the Sindh government and Chen Zhixin, Chairman of Longping High-Tech Information Company.

The third MoU on tea sector was signed between MESKAY & FEMTEE Trading Company, Hunan Tea Group and Jiaolong International Technology (Hainan) to promote cooperation across all areas of the industry, with a view to supporting the development of tea industry in both countries and strengthening economic, trade and people-to-people ties.

The MoU was signed from the Pakistani side by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla and from the Chinese side by Zhou Chongwang, Party Secretary and Chairman of Hunan Tea Group, and Hao Jiaolong, Chairman of Hainan Jiaolong International Trade Technology.

Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Sindh for Investment and Public-Private Partnership Projects; Ali Hassan Barohi; Chief Secretary, Sindh and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi were also present on the occasion.

President Zardari touched down in China just after midnight on Saturday, beginning an official visit centred on strengthening economic and trade ties, with a focus on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

A day earlier, President Zardari visited SANY Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. in Changsha, Hunan province; China where he was briefed by Chairman of Sany Group Tang Xiuguo, on the company’s advanced manufacturing systems, product lines and ongoing investments in research and development.

The visit focused on exploring avenues for industrial cooperation, technology transfer and investment between Pakistan and China in the engineering and construction machinery sector, the President Secretariat Media Wing said in a press release.

Last year, President Zardari travelled to China on a 10-day official visit, where he met senior Chinese leadership to deepen bilateral ties, expand cooperation across sectors and push forward shared priorities.

Six MoUs were signed between the Sindh government and business partners, covering agriculture, defence, energy, rail connectivity and farmer training, with plans to scale these initiatives to other provinces.

First groups of Pakistani pilgrims arrive in Makkah to warm welcome

MAKKAH MUKARRAMAH, Apr 27:The first groups of Pakistani pilgrims, after completing their stay and Ziarat in Madinah Munawwarah, have started arriving in the holy city of Makkah Mukarramah, marking the beginning of a spiritual season draped in the traditional white Ihrams.

According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the arrival of the “Guests of Allah” (Dhuyuf-ur-Rahman) was met with a heart-warming reception. Pilgrims were showered with flower petals and served with Aab-e-Zamzam, dates, and chilled beverages upon their arrival at their residences. The pilgrims expressed immense joy and satisfaction over the heartfelt welcome.

Director General Hajj Abdul Wahab Soomro, accompanied by Chief Coordinator Makkah Dr. Mirza Ali Mehsud, Coordinator for Accommodation, Food and Transport Zulfiqar Khan, Director Hajj Makkah Arif Aslam Rao, and Deputy Director Hajj Azizullah Khan, visited various residential buildings to meet with the pilgrims. During the visit, the DG Hajj inquired about the quality of facilities and personally reviewed the administrative arrangements to ensure a smooth stay for the pilgrims.

The spokesperson further informed that all arrangements for the pilgrims to perform their first Umrah have been finalized. Under the supervision of the Main Control Office (MCO) Makkah, comprehensive services including dedicated transport to the Haram, Haram Guides, quality meal distribution, and the deployment of Khuddam-ul-Hujjaj at residential buildings have been activated.

Hajj officials reiterated that all available resources are being utilized to provide maximum facilities to Pakistani pilgrims, enabling them to perform their religious obligations in a peaceful and hassle-free environment.

Iran proposes deal to reopen Strait of Hormuz, defer nuclear talks: report

ISLAMABAD, APR 27: Iran, through Pakistani mediators, has offered a new proposal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, with nuclear negotiations postponed for a later stage, US media outlet Axios reported, citing an American official and two sources with knowledge of the matter.

Hopes of reviving peace efforts receded on Saturday when US President Donald Trump scrapped a visit to Islamabad by his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi shuttled to and from mediators Pakistan and Oman on Sunday before flying to Russia, with the two sides still seemingly far apart on issues including Iran’s nuclear ambitions and access through the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said Iran could telephone if it wants to negotiate an end to their two-month war.

“If they want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us. You know, there is a telephone. We have nice, secure lines,” Trump told “The Sunday Briefing” on Fox News.

“They know what has to be in the agreement. It’s very simple: They cannot have a nuclear weapon; otherwise, there’s no reason to meet,” Trump said.

Iran has long demanded Washington acknowledge its right to enrich uranium, which Tehran says it only seeks for peaceful purposes, but which Western powers say is aimed at building nuclear weapons.

Although a ceasefire has paused full‑scale fighting in the conflict, which began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, no agreement has been reached on terms to end a war that has killed thousands, driven up oil prices, fuelled inflation and darkened the outlook for global growth.

Axios, while citing two sources with knowledge, reported that the Iranian foreign minister raised the plan to bypass the nuclear issue during his meetings in Islamabad.

According to one of the sources, Araghchi made it clear to the Pakistani, Egyptian, Turkish and Qatari mediators over the weekend that there’s no consensus inside the Iranian leadership about how to address the US demands.

Under the proposal, Axios reported, the immediate focus would be on reopening the strait and lifting the blockade before moving to broader negotiations.

As part of this framework, the existing ceasefire would either be extended for a prolonged period or converted into a permanent end to the war, the sources said.

The proposal envisages that negotiations on the nuclear issue would begin only at a later stage, after maritime access is restored and blockade-related concerns are addressed.

The White House has received the proposal, though it remains unclear whether Washington is prepared to consider or pursue the framework.

“These are sensitive diplomatic discussions and the US will not negotiate through the press. As the president has said, the United States holds the cards and will only make a deal that puts the American people first, never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” White House spokesperson Olivia Wales told Axios.

With his approval ratings falling, Trump faces domestic pressure to end the unpopular war. Iran’s leaders, though weakened militarily, have found leverage in negotiations with their ability to stop shipping in the strait, which normally carries a fifth of global oil shipments.

Tehran has largely closed the strait while Washington has imposed a blockade of Iranian ports.

US and Iran’s extensive disagreements
Disagreements between the US and Iran extend beyond Tehran’s nuclear programme and control of the strait.

Trump wants to limit Iran’s support for its regional proxies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, and curb its ability to strike U.S. allies with ballistic missiles. Iran wants a lifting of sanctions and an end to Israeli attacks on Hezbollah.

In Lebanon, Israeli strikes killed 14 people and wounded 37 on Sunday, the health ministry said. The Israeli military warned residents to leave seven towns beyond the “buffer zone” it occupied before a ceasefire that has failed to fully halt hostilities.

He mentioned that as the exhibition continues, Pakistani participants are expected to explore further partnerships, evaluate emerging trends, and engage with Chinese counterparts to strengthen long-term business ties.

He urged SAARC member countries to fully support Pakistan’s efforts to defuse the tension in the region.


Malik said, “Pakistan always stands for peace and harmony among all countries but will never ever compromise on its sovereignty, security and solidarity.”

KARACHI, APR 26: Three-time champions Islamabad United won the toss and decided to bowl first against Multan Sultans in the 40th match of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11 at the National Bank Stadium on Sunday.
