Socio-economy and geopolitics of Indo-Pacific region enters into a new trade war

DNA

Islamabad, Aug 16: The socio-economy and geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific region has entered into a new “blind alley” of another trade war in terms of semiconductor/CHIPs, says a report published by Gwadar Pro on Tuesday.

Most recently, the US government has announced to form a BIG/CHIP 4 Alliance (US, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan) to contain the Chinese semiconductor capacity and market share, the report added quoting an article contributed by Dr. Mehmood Ul Hassan Khan, Executive Director of the Center for South Asia & International Studies (CSAIS).

It was stated that in the near past, the world experienced a shortage of chips during the Covid-19 pandemic, which disrupted the production of multiple products and sparked a worldwide debate about chip production.
In this connection, the US President Joe Biden recently signed the Chips and Science Act of worth US$52 billion and sets aside tens of billions of dollars to encourage companies to set up manufacturing and design facilities in the US.
The Act has “violated” basic market rules by using the government’s power to change the global labor distribution pattern in the semiconductor industry, which has been formed naturally over the years according to market characteristics and resources.

China and some other countries are good at mass production because these countries have advantages over the US in terms of labor costs. Therefore, a short-term subsidy aimed at moving all the sectors of the semiconductor to the US will only add to its manufacturing cost, making the products less competitive in the international market.

On the other hand, if companies decide to accept US subsidies and give up chip investment in Chinese mainland, that almost means a spontaneous abandonment of the huge Chinese market, which not only helps produce a large amount of chips at a relatively low cost for them, but buys many semiconductor products from them. Thus, in the long run, the global chip giants may be at a loss.

Shares of many global chip makers plunged, even the US companies are facing the heat. US chip stocks’ plunged also to some extent, reflecting the concerns of semiconductor enterprises as they are forced to choose sides, restructure their future investment and layout following passage of the bill.
Conversely, several leading semiconductor companies in China, including the largest producer and major component suppliers, reported strong results in the first half of 2022, despite the US’ relentless crackdown against China’s chip industry.

China’s largest chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), Yangzhou Yangjie Electronic Technology Co, Amlogic (Shanghai) Co and last but not least, Sino Wealth Electronic shared substantial increase in their overall profitability and market share, which is a very healthy sign for the Chinese domestic semiconductor industries.

Now is the age of globalization, in which all commercial decisions are made on the basis of “supply-demand”, availability of cheap labour, expected business expenses and cost of massive production, but somehow, the successive government of the US has been “cliff-hanging’ with the self-defined doctrine of economic nationalism and protectionism. Due to which, in many cases, the concept and model of free market has been “compressed” and “compromised” in the world.
The government subsidies have “killing instincts” for the globalized economy, economic sustainability, free & fair play, supply chains, international payment system and especially free flow of funds and foreign direct investments in the world.
Thus, the US CHIPs Act is “anti-international economy” and its subsidies are anti-standardization of the modern industrial world.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, or TSMC, the world’s largest chip foundry, started building a $12 billion complex in Arizona last year. Samsung Electronics is working on a $17 billion factory in Texas.
However, in the past, the success of Silicon Valley depended on venture capital investments, the very high-risk, high-reward investments that fueled the emergence and growth of the semiconductor industry. Nevertheless, when they stopped their investments and preferred to develop overseas markets such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan and later on the Chinese mainland, the US quite naturally lost its edge in manufacturing semiconductor chips which is now at the lowest ebbs.
It seems that now throwing money at the semiconductor industry to make up for the lost decades may not succeed, because the lost decades mean that the US no longer has the necessary people with the skills to build and run a state of the art fab.
The Chinese “financial gurus” and banking experts should consider alternative means to evade the CHIPS Act’s clauses by adopting special commercial structures such as “sovereign wealth funds’, trust or other methods, which will help them mitigate its negative impacts.
Public-private partnership in the R & D of national industries of semiconductors and technological cooperation with ASEAN countries and government incentives may be good countermeasures of China to mitigate spillover repercussions of the US CHIPS & Science Act.

Strategic expansion of the “BRICS” and start of “CHIP BRI Initiative” may be sensible strategic measures to mitigate negative impacts of the US Chip Act.

Violent protests erupt in parts of Kenya over vote

DNA

Kisumu, Kenya Violent protests erupted in Raila Odinga’s stronghold of Kisumu and parts of Nairobi after he lost his fifth bid for Kenya’s presidency on Monday, with angry demonstrators alleging vote-rigging as police fired tear gas to disperse them.

Odinga, 77, a veteran opposition politician now backed by the ruling party, has not spoken in public since the results were announced, but has accused his opponents of cheating him out of victory in the 2007, 2013 and 2017 presidential elections.

The 2007 polls in particular — which many independent observers also considered deeply flawed — cast a long shadow over Kenyan politics, unleashing a wave of ethnic violence that pitted tribal groups against each other and cost more than 1,100 lives.

As news of the results filtered through to Kisumu, large numbers of protesters congregated on a roundabout in the lakeside city, throwing stones and setting tyres on fire as they blocked roads with broken rocks.

“It was not free and fair. We were cheated,” 26-year-old Odinga supporter Collins Odoyo told as he rushed off to join the crowd, barefoot and with a vuvuzela horn strapped across his back.

– ‘You can’t steal from us’ –

“The government must listen to us. They must redo the election,” said Isaac Onyango, 24, his eyes streaming as police tried to defuse the demonstration with tear gas.

“You can’t steal from us!” shouted a young man in a balaclava wielding a club.

As tensions spike following the disputed outcome of the August 9 vote, 55-year-old president-elect William Ruto vowed to work with “all leaders”.

“There is no room for vengeance,” he said. “I am acutely aware that our country is at a stage where we need all hands on deck.”

correspondents reported that police fired live rounds as protests erupted in the Nairobi slum of Mathare where Odinga is popular.

And across town in Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest slums, young supporters, who refer to him as “Baba” or “father” in Swahili, demanded a re-run as they hurled stones.

“Baba’s vote has been stolen,” said motorcycle taxi driver Emmanuel Otieno.

“Stop lying to Kenyans, we know Baba won,” said another protester, Eliud Omolo, waving a banner supporting Odinga.

Greek phone-hacking scandal: investigative media’s key role

DNA

Athens, AUG 15: Investigative journalism has emerged as a powerful force during Greece’s phone-hacking scandal, rocking a government that tries to “control” the media landscape, experts say.

The long-rumbling “Predatorgate” affair reignited at the end of July when Nikos Androulakis, leader of the opposition Socialists, told journalists about the attempted surveillance of his mobile phone via spyware Predator, having filed a legal complaint.

The spyware can hack into a target’s phone and access messages and conversations.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis acknowledged last week that the intelligence service’s surveillance had been “politically unacceptable”, claiming he had not been informed.

He was speaking three days after two key members of his conservative government resigned over the matter.

Earlier this year two Greek journalists launched legal action, saying they had fallen prey to similar attacks on their phones.

Months-long probes by Greek investigative media have played a crucial part in shedding light on the phone-hacking.

Eliza Triantafyllou, a journalist with the Inside Story website, began investigating the case in January after the publication of two reports by the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab and Meta (Facebook) referring to a new spyware, Predator, with clients and targets in Greece.

“These reports went unnoticed by the (mainstream) Greek media at the time, though they revealed that the Greek government had probably bought Predator,” she wrote in a recent article.

Last April, Inside Story published “the first confirmed case of Predator use in 2021 against a European citizen” — Greek journalist Thanasis Koukakis, who specialises in reporting on corruption.

Online investigative news site Reporters United followed up by reporting that the journalist’s phone was monitored by the Greek intelligence service, EYP, in 2020.

Stories first published online by investigative journalists are now making headlines in Greek newspapers.

The country’s media landscape is marked by the connivance of traditional media groups with public authorities in line with political and financial interests.

The Reporters Without Borders (RSF) non-profit gives Greece the lowest press freedom rank in Europe.

RSF and the Media Freedom Rapid Response NGO have said the ruling party is “obsessed with controlling the message” and “minimising critical and dissenting voices”.

But investigative outlets are “a hope for freedom of expression” in Greece, according to Katerina Batzeli, a member of the Pasok-Kinal central committee, former minister and MEP.

“These innovative media have taken risks and done an extraordinary job” she said.

Greek investigative media, including Inside Story, Solomon and Reporters United, have been on the rise in recent years, using subscriptions to promote “independent and analytical information”.

With disinformation rife, “investigative media dare to control the power”, said media analyst Georges Tzogopoulos.

Afghanistan under Taliban rule, considered a prison where inmates living like chained slaves

DNA

Shamim Shahid
PESHAWAR, AUG 15 /DNA/ – Whatever might be claims on the part of Taliban or their abroad patrons and financiers but they repeated the history by converting Afghanistan into a prison where the inmates are living like chained slaves. Even they out at stake very sovereign and autonomous status of the country where its some of dwellers are engaged in resistance against visible and non visible aggressors from abroad.
Though Taliban are makinb claims of getting occupation of Afghanistan by defeating United States lead allies and its installed regime in Kabul but the fact is different. Despite hectic efforts including carrying out wide range terror acts from 2009, atarted with second term of Hamid Karzai, the Taliban even had failed to get control or occupation of any important city or province till August 2021 last.  During this period, the Taliban claiming them as Emirate Islami Afghanistan has claimed responsibilities for hundreds of deadly terror acts, even that caused lives to innocent women, children, Ulema, seminary and school going students.
It is premature to say some thing about hidden agenda or future strategies of US lead allies but Taliban enabled of capturing Kabul on August 15th through well accomplished Doha Qatar Agreement. The Emirate Islami Afghanistan has not only made commitments of didn’t allowing any one to use Afghanistan soil against other countries but in particular it promised of didn’t gifting sanctuaries to all those who are either on UN black list or wanted to US. And killing of Al Qaeda chief Dr Aiman Al Zawahiri couple of days back in Kabul has exposed the Taliban who are making claims of controlling almost of the country. Even Prime Minister and Defense Minister remain unaware of high profile guests in the well guarded residence of Interior minister in heart of Kabul city. Killing of Al Qaeda’s Al Zawahiri has not only degraded further credibility of Taliban in global communities but it also posed very bad impacts on Its regime- which yet to get recognition of any member of UN, even those who are on list or considered in rival camp of US led allies.
On the issue of Human Rights, the Taliban regime yet to make satisfy rest of the world and global organisations- known for watching the HE situation throughout the world. The UN human rights rapporteur and Amnesty International time and again shown sever resentment over continuous violation of HR situation in Afghanistan wheres the extra judicial killing of personnel of former security forces and supporters of those who remained occupants of official posts since December 2001 is considered a routine. As a result fleeing on the part of Afghans is still continue. Almost hotels and guest houses in Islamabad Pakistan, Turkey, and other Central Asian Republics are occupied by women and children from Afghanistan- waiting for turn if boarding on flights for Western and American destinations.
The Emirates Islami Afghanistan’s hostile attitude towards female schooling is no more secret almost girls are locked and now one amongst millions of girls babies are allowed to enter schools. Even the Talobsn regime are turning to deap ear UN, OIC and other international organisations requests and appeals. There are reports of starting home-schools in Kabul and other cities. But Taliban now making their best to discourage home schooling system, started by teachers and students. Thousands of female teachers have also lost their jobs due to shuttering of schools
Likewise is the economic situation as almost economic opportunities are either pit on halt or running in ill fated circumstances. The UN reports reveal that over seven million  Afghans are in direct need of food assistance. But journalists believe economic sutuation is going worse day by day in all over Afghanistan.

By Correspondent / DNA

ATTOCK: The local district administration has sealed all ill-maintained rides, slides and swings including mechanical, conventional and electrical at an amusement park located on private land in the Pindigheb city to avert any untoward incident. PTI to launch countrywide mass movement to send imported packing: Fawad

DNA

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry announced that the PTI would launch a well-conceived countrywide anti-government movement to send the current corrupt imported setup packing, which was hell-bent destroying Pakistan economically and politically.

Talking to media here on Monday, Fawad Chaudhry said that Chairman PTI Imran Khan would address public gatherings in major cities across the country to rid the country of the inept and imported government, making life of rank and file a hell.

He said that the Chairman PTI would formally launch the anti-government movement from Karachi on August 19, where the PTI would hold a mammoth power show, adding that Imran Khan would hold public gatherings till December 10 in various parts of the country.

Fawad said that the PTI strongly condemned the police torture on Shahbaz Gill, which was unacceptable.

He said that what was happening to Gill was the height of injustice and the entire party stood with him. He expressed his apprehension that Gill could be kidnapped so as to get his medical certificate from PIMS.

Fawad went on to say that the PTI would take up the issue of Gill’s torture globally.

He expressed his shock over the court’s decision to issue a notice for hearing regarding Gill’s physical remand, as they just wanted this remand to torture him.

Fawad urged that the matter should resolved at the earliest, as Gill was being targeted because he was weak, adding that his case was similar to Nawaz Sharif, Fazlur Rehman and Maryam Safdar.

The PTI said that Rana Sanaullah set a dangerous and new tradition to crackdown against innocent children and helpless women, adding that this was causing irreparable damage to Pakistan’s politics.

Talking about PM’s offer of talk on Charter of economy, Fawad termed the proposal of a charter of economy a foolish idea, as the PTI could not support the destructive economic policy of the government of crooks that brought the country on the verge of economic collapse.

He lashed out at the government flawed policies, which he would trigger tsunami of unemployment while PTI government provided 55 lac jobs.

Fawad revealed that the imported government was trying to put a rift in the judiciary, adding that the people did not forget the era of Rafiq Tarar, as how the judiciary was divided.

He condemned all such efforts and vowed the PTI would foil all such nefarious plans to divide the judiciary.

The PTI leader announced that the PTI would hold judiciary independence day on Monday and Imran Khan would address the address Bar Associations.

Criticizing government for gaging media’s voice, Fawad said that the PTI would hold press freedom day on Thursday to express solidarity with journalists being faced coercion and torture at the hands of the imported government.

He said that the cabal of thieves made life a hell for journalists, as the private TV channel was closed for showing the activities of the PML-N strategic media cell.

Fawad stated that they would raise voice for Arshad Sharif, Khawar Ghaman, Sami Ibrahim and Imran Riaz along with all the people who were suffered due to the inhuman and harsh policies of the current government.

He said that the issue would be taken up with Amnesty and the international community, as Chairman PTI issued special instructions to Dr. Shireen Mazari to raise the matter at the international level.

Fawad ruled out talks with the corrupt government; however, he added that the talk could only be held on a framework for early, free and transparent polls, because snap polls was the only solution to steer the country out of the current untold crises.

He said that there was no need of backdoor contacts or closed-door talk, as everything would be in open and public would set the narrative.

However, he made it clear that the government was running away from the elections because they saw the writing on the wall that they would face drubbing at the hands of Imran Khan.

He said that the PTI would not tolerate any further delay because the imported government has already plunged the country into myriad problems. Fawad further said that the government should learn lesson from 1970 instead of conspiring to suppress PTI.

Coming down hard on ECP, he said that the PTI had no trust on the electoral body, which worked as subsidiary of the government.

He demanded that the PPP, PML-N and JUI’s money laundering cases should be brought to the fore and Asif Ali Zardari, Nawaz Sharif and Fazlur Rehman should bring back their money stationed abroad.
