From The Diary-Pages Of Rashid Minhas Shaheed

“They tell, talk to a pilot about flying and one will find a true love story.”Asma Ishaq

This line goes true about our one young pilot officer: Rashid Minhas Shaheed who happens to be the youngest and only PAF officer becoming recipient of the Highest Military Award-Nishan-e-Haider. Born on 17 February, 1951 in Karachi, this flying officer had got every charismatic mannerism that a passionate flying officer can have.

His parents and older siblings had expressed at many occasions that he grew up collecting the fighter- jetmodels and playing with them. Often, he would share about his passion for flying with the glistening eyes. As indisposition, Rashid had got a quiet and calm personality. He was regarded as a deep-thinking youngster from all his family members and close relatives. The same deep-thinking habit had turned Rashid into an amazing youngster. Likewise, he was highly appreciated by the teachers! All because, he had understood the life and its purpose so earlier. He had an acute enchanting-ability to inspire people, everywhere he had gone to. He had continued proving himself as an excellent and a brilliant studentat St. Patrick’s School in Karachi.

During his training at thePAF Academy Risalpur, he appeared as the great debater. It was observed that when Rashid began speaking for any declamation competition, he had left everyone enthralledsitting in the audience. Nonetheless, Rashid established the true leadership qualities, an amazing mediator, a highly focused young boy as well determined for the set goals. Yet! Above all, he was an awesomely humble soul. He nevershowed even the slightest ofcontempt and arrogance towards anyone. He was a happy-go-young man who made all the people smiling around him.

Other than all these personality traits of Rashid Minhas Shaheed, there wasone strong habit of writing diary entries on daily basis. There, on those pages, one can find the real Rashid Minhas who was a true dream-chaser and who had set goal beyond the sky. His diary was replenished with his sincere thoughts for the family, his unwavering love for Motherland, and unfathomable yearning for embracing the martyrdom. Rashid used to write his diary entries with mentioning date and time properly. On one page, he wrote his heart out for the martyrdom,

“Death or Victory! We all have to die one day. Man is mortal. Then why not to die for the country? Isn’t so easy?”

It was mentioned above that Rashid was a deep-thinker. Now, read these lines from his one letter about the life and its truth. One will concede to his philosophical approach about the life,

“Man wants to know the Truth, the truth about himself, about the world, about everything.

This is what they call the eternal quest for truth or truth through knowledge. Of -course religion gives it all to you in a concise form but it does not stop you from finding out for yourself and strengthening your belief. That is how it must be with you. So, youmustfindout theTruthyourself. Satisfy your self. The books just give you the thing how it happens. People can just advise you. How? andWhy? You must answer it yourself.Think it out! ”

One page of his diary shares one beautiful two-quatrain poem about the life and its purpose for upcoming generations, It expresses like,

This world is but a stopping place,

And life but a short span,

So why not through time-race,

And accomplish whatever we can,

So that generations to come,

Will remember us as great ones!

                            We cannot but forever live,

And we have to die for once,

So why not to our country give,

The life which we can easily can!

Rashid Minhas was so convinced and hopeful for thedetermination to inspire the later generations with his thoughts, spirits and sacrifice. I come as one of those who has learnt many things from him. From my school days, I was fond of reading articles and excerpt of his diary-pages published for the Defence Day edition in different kids’ magazines. Moreover, my late-father was a great admirer of all the martyrs from the Armed Forces. It was him who had instilled this love for Armed Forces in me. I remember still, he had taken me to one stationary shop and bought two posters to me: one was of Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed and other was Rashid Minhas Shaheed. I had put up both posters on my wardrobe so lovingly. Seeing them daily had been an energizing factor throughout my student life.

Human carries light within and one sees the self, life, world and entire universe through its prism. This light has been given and is guided by the Divine Himself. Blessed are those who gets succeeded to see this light. And more blessed are those who transfers this light to the fellow humans. There, the person is called the benevolent. Rashid Minhas has been one such most fortunate in this regard. The light in him has been guiding many hundred souls. Such a short-lived life yet he had become a great source of motivation not only for the aspiring young flying officers but also for many young kids in the country. He has definitely personified the line of one famous PAF song sung by Vital Signs,

“Zindagi ka mazayunjeenay main hai, kalbhizindarahain, aesay hum jiay.”

When Nations Vanish

Dr. Abdus Sattar Abbasi

Nations vanish when they obstruct diversity of thoughts and ideas in their lands. Decline becomes their destiny when they try the dominance of single thought or philosophy, the viewpoint of the majority, for the existence in their society. It is even harmful in present times when humanity learned the power of inclusion and diversity. The learning and insight which comes from the participation of all segments of the society has been considered as invaluable for the progress and the development of any group, organization and a society. This aspect helped modern civilizations to eliminate divisions based on race, ethnicities, religions or any philosophical foundation. We learned that considering and accommodating viewpoints of others is more productive than inhibiting thoughts to proliferate at critical times, engagement is fruitful than confrontation to understand each other instead of marginalizing people to provide space forundesirable outcomes.

Historically Muslim societies promoted inclusion and diversity in the society. The second Caliph of Islam was martyred as a result of assault by his ex-servant who wasn’t a Muslim. Once the second Caliph of Islam, who ruled almost half of the planet, tried to convince this servant to embrace Islam but on his refusal the second Caliph abandoned to pursuewhile saying, “There is no compulsion in religion”.

Recent campaign in India against Islamic scholar Abu al ‘AlaMaududi suggests suffocation and narrow-mindedness of Indian society. This decay is a result of hatred and extremism promoted by the current ruling regime in India. It is inappropriate for the largest democracy to curb autonomy of universities, a hallmark of modern-day institutions of higher learning.

According to Dr. Michael Crow the President of Arizona State University, “Universities are unique kinds of global institutions. Universities are institutions intended to be durable and enduring. When wisely designed, governed and financed, they are unique entities in a democracy and in our global society. Universities are neutral conveners, assemblers of talent, and unmatched idea factories where the passion, creativity, and idealism of great minds, young and old alike, can be applied to problem-solving and advancing our societal and economic well-being. Contemporary universities have a responsibility to transcend traditional disciplinary limitations in pursuit of intellectual fusion, and develop a culture of academic enterprise.”

George M. Sammy argued, “Institutions of higher education were all born of a search for truth and thus knowledge. In its earliest relationship, the search for and testing of ideas and theories gave rise to research. The frontiers of knowledge were pushed back, and theorizing sought the aid of experimentation as a means of proof. At the university we will not find unitary or one-way tendencies but rather multiple and cross-dimensional tendencies. Here we are dealing with divergent and conflicting tendencies in a more or less creative or fruitful tension. It is this fearless and ceaseless seeking and testing without let or hindrance that has given the university its special characteristics, and thus its influence in the world today.”

China has emerged as global power in recent times. When I decided to present a paper on Islamic finance during my visit to China to attend ‘The First Belt and Road International Finance Symposium’ atHeBeiNoraml University (HNU) on October 27-31, 2019 most of my colleagues were of the view that probably it will not be acceptable for the organizers to listen to the Islamic finance. But eventually it was a pleasant surprise for entire delegation to notice extensive interest among participants of the conference to know about Islamic banking and finance. Academics from different universities and officials from public offices took special interest, asked relevant questions and looked into the possibilities to assimilate Islamic banking and finance into their financial organizations. China also quickly adapted to the modern capitalistic approaches thus reaping benefits of modifications in their economic policies. Their hybrid approach to the democracy and the economy is an excellent example of accommodating and learning from the diversity of thoughts, philosophies, approaches and the brains from different parts of the globe.

I got the opportunity to attend a seminar in the University of Punjab on August 08, 2022 deliberating this emerging challenge for universities in India. It was indeed a surprise for most of the participants that how universities can be dictated to ban any scholar or any school of thought from scholarly analyses. Some leading academicians, development sector professionals, public sector representatives and seasoned journalists were present in the program. It was a consensus that these kinds of restrictions will certainly blemish Indian higher education institutions (HEIs) in particular and set a wrong tradition for HEIs around the globe.

It is the time for groomed, learned and liberal segments of the Indian society to campaign against such measures of strangling specific schools of thoughts to be taught in universities where student, teachers and researchers can critically evaluate, analyse, qualify, refute, reject or accept theories and ideas on the basis of academic discourses. Otherwise these discussions and reflections will find room in the streets and cafes of the society leading to repercussions which may not be subject to any discipline and control. It is equally a responsibility of universities to resist such drives throttling their independence and autonomy. Universities in India have to fight strong to maintain their academic liberty and integrity to uphold globally recognized scholastic culture of institutions of higher learning.

We hope sanity prevails in policy making circles of India and universities remain on their freedom to develop their curriculum according to intellectual and communal needs of their surrounding environment.

Court orders to keep Gill in hospital till Monday

ISLAMABAD, Aug 19: A judicial Magistrate of Islamabad on Friday directed to conduct another medical analysis of PTI’s leader Shahbaz Gill and ordered to keep him in hospital till August 22, in a sedition case registered by Kohsar Police Station.

The court order said that the two-day physical remand of the accused was not started yet and thus rejected the request of prosecution for further eight days remand.

Shahbaz Gill was produced before before the court of Judicial Magistrate Raja Farakh Ali Khan by the police amid foolproof security arrangements. The court said that the accused seemed not well as he was suffering from asthma and instructed to conduct his medical examination again.

During the course of proceeding, the police requested the court to grant further eight-day physical remand of the accused. At this, the judge asked whether the two days physical remand had completed as the accused had been in hospital. He questioned why the prosecution was demanding further eight day remand.

Special Prosecutor Rizwan Abbasi contended that a medical analysis of the accused was done when he was admitted in hospital. He said that the investigation officer himself could ensure medical check up of the accused in emergency without the directives of the court. It was not written anywhere in the law that the accused physical remand couldn’t be granted in sickness, he added.

He said that the medical officer of Adiala Jail had informed the IHC that Shahbaz Gill was table when he was brought at jail and his medical report was normal. The officer said that health problems appeared of the accused when the court granted the police further two day remand of the accused, he said.

Gill’s counsel Faisal Chaudhry Advocate said that the court had itself viewed the health condition of his client. It was a geniune issue, he said, adding that there were also signs of torture on Gill as per the medical report. The police were also admitting that the remand time had been completed, he said.

The lawyer said that the police had interrogated his client even in hospital, adding that there was no doubt that 48 hours remand time had been expired. He opposed the request of police for further physical remand of the accused.

The court earlier reserved its judgment and later ordered to keep the accused in hospital till Monday. The court also said that the physical remand of the accused was yet to start.

Rise of dollar against rupee is troubling

DNA

ISLAMABAD: FPCCI’s Presidential candidate Atif Ikram Sheikh on Fridays said the stability of the dollar against the rupee is worrying as the rupee has not yet stabilized as expected.

Steps should be taken to bring the rupee to one hundred eighty or one hundred and eighty-five to a dollar as per the expectations of the business community, he said.

Talking to the business community, Atif Ikram Sheikh said that the dollar was worth 215 rupees after retreating for two weeks but now it is gaining strength against the rupee which is disturbing.

The dollar fell from 239.50 rupees to 213.90 rupees this year, but now the fall has stopped and its value has increased to more than 218 rupees due to a reduction in remittances and dwindling exports and some decisions, he observed.

The business leader said that if the dollar continued to stabilize again, this will allow speculators and profiteers to again distort the market, affecting the public and the business community.

He said that the main reason for the increase in the value of the rupee is the commitments of the IMF and friendly countries, which should be ensured as soon as possible to improve the confidence of investors and provide relief to the people.

The government can try to stabilize the rupee by paying attention to reforms and reducing unnecessary imports, which is also necessary to maintain foreign exchange reserves as the rupee faces a serious risk of further decline against the US dollar.

The rupee after touching a lifetime low may settle soon due to low crude oil prices and likely improvement in the geopolitical situation.

Pakistan rejects India’s ‘deliberate attempts’ at pre-poll rigging in IIOJK

ISLAMABAD, AUG 19 /DNA/ – Pakistan on Friday categorically rejected deliberate Indian attempts of “pre-poll rigging” and “overt manipulation” in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The statement comes days after the chief electoral officer in the occupied valley, Hirdesh Kumar, announced that non-locals living ordinarily could register their names in the voting list.

“Jammu and Kashmir is likely to get around 25 lakh additional voters, including outsiders, after the special summary revision of electoral rolls,” The Wire quoted Kumar as saying.

The report added that his remarks drew angry reactions from mainstream political parties in IIOJK.

In a statement issued today, Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the latest announcement of “permitting even temporary residents in the occupied territory, including outside workforce and security personnel, to register as ‘voters’ is a clear manifestation of the treacherous Indian design to influence the outcome of ‘so-called’ elections in IIOJK.”

“Pakistan reiterates its complete rejection of India’s entire litany of steps aimed at turning the Muslim majority in IIOJK into a minority — including the formulation of the so-called ‘delimitation’ commission and its baseless report, the issuance of fake Kashmiri domiciles to millions of outsiders, and changes in the property laws.”

The spokesperson said that despite the “reprehensible measures” that followed the revocation of the region’s special autonomy in 2019, India would not be able to break the will of the Kashmiri people or mislead the international community.

“The government of India must desist from all actions in IIOJK that violate international law, the United Nations Charter, and the 4th Geneva Convention,” he said.

The FO spokesperson also urged India to release all political prisoners detained on “trumped-up charges”, halt human rights violations in the occupied valley, lift the brutal military siege, and let Kashmiris exercise their right to self-determination as stipulated in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The FO further called upon the international community to take immediate cognisance of blatant Indian attempts at “effecting illegal demographic changes” in IIOJK and to hold India accountable.

CPEC enhances Sino’-Pak cooperation for sustainable development: Envoys

DNA

ISLAMABAD, Aug 19: The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has contributed to the high-quality green and sustainable development in Pakistan, and it will push for more such cooperation to promote sustainable and green development in the country. The views were expressed by Chinese and Pakistan envoys at a webinar exploring green development under CPEC, according to a report published by China Economic Net (CEN) on Friday.

While delivering a keynote speech at the forum, Nong Rong, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan said that China and Pakistan have boosted cooperation in green energy. “Five wind power projects have been completed under CPEC with a total capacity of 300 megawatts, and another 300-megawatt solar power project has been completed,” noted Nong Rong revealed that more green projects are ongoing under CPEC as “[the] Karot hydropower plant has successfully entered commercial operation[s] and large hydropower projects such as SK are progressing,” adding that the Matiari-Lahore power transmission line helps cut “the line loss from 17% to 4%, greatly reducing energy loss and improving efficiency.”Green and sustainable development is also generating huge employment opportunities in Pakistan, shared the envoy.

“According to statistics, CPEC has created 85,000 jobs for Pakistan,” Nong explicated, “For example, the construction of Gwadar port has created 4,000 jobs among which 3,800 are [taken by the] Pakistani people.” Such ideas are echoed by Moin Ul Haque, Pakistani Ambassador to China, who termed CPEC as a “people-centric, socially inclusive, environmentally friendly, and green and sustainable” initiative.

Haque said that “the recently completed Karot hydropower project is an example of [the] clean, green vision of CPEC” and that he was more than “happy to see more CPEC projects [being] taken into consideration in the green development aspect.” With a growing emphasis on green development, said Haque, China and Pakistan have been working to build a green corridor to focus on areas of agriculture, environment, food, climate change, and food security. “Our two sides are now working to finalise the blueprint of the green corridor to carry out practical cooperation.

And in this respect, agriculture has been identified as a key area of cooperation,” noted Haque. As per Haque, a bilateral meeting to this end will be held before the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) on CPEC this year, and an action plan is also underway with the support of many research institutions, the academia and ministries. Hosted by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), the CPEC Green-Development High-Level Policy Dialogue aims to engage the key stakeholders from China and Pakistan including the governments, investors, regulators, developers, academia, and civil society to reflect on the success of major initiatives implemented under the BRI and seek a better way forward.

Polio free Pakistan is a national goal: PM

The whole nation pays homage to soldiers, police constables and Polio workers martyred in the line of duty: PM

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD, AUG 19: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif chaired the National Task Force meeting for polio eradication on Friday and expressed his government’s full commitment to take practical measures for curbing wild poliovirus transmission in Pakistan.

The Prime Minister said the current climatic conditions pose great challenges to vaccination campaigns, but it is remarkable to see how polio teams have carried on despite floods in several parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkwa (KP) and torrential rains in Karachi.

It is Important to mention that the current polio campaign for Karachi and six districts of southern Khyber-Pakhtunkwa started on 15 August, while National Polio Vaccination Drive in the rest of the country will commence on the 22nd of August.

“This is a testing time, with recent cases and security incidents, but this is a challenge we can and will overcome. Countries with far more complex challenges have eradicated polio and I see no reason why Pakistan cannot curb transmission,” the Prime Minister said, adding that all provincial governments must ensure they have the best people in the most challenging areas.

“I thank all law enforcement agencies, especially Pakistan Army and Police for their support to polio teams across Pakistan. Many officers and polio workers have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty”, he added.

The Prime Minister also thanked the international donors and partners, especially Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, who have been consistently helping Pakistan to curb the spread of polio virus in Pakistan.

It is relevant to state that this is the Third National Task Force Meeting on Polio that the PM has chaired since he took office. Soon after the first wild polio case of the year was reported in April, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired an emergency meeting of deputy commissioners of all high-risk areas to discuss and address the challenges on the ground.

The PM and other participants recited fateha for the police constables and soldiers who were martyred in Tank on Tuesday.

Shahbaz Gill handed over to Islamabad Police

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Following a heated standoff between Islamabad and Rawalpindi polices over the custody of Shahbaz Gill, the Adiala jail authorities handed over the custody of the PTI leader to the former, Geo News reported Wednesday.

Islamabad Police has left the jail with Gill as Punjab Police personnel returned back after hours-long drama outside the jail premises. It was further learnt that Gill will be first taken to PIMS for a medical checkup.

Gill’s custody has been given to Islamabad Police according to the directions of the court. Sources in the police said that he will be shifted to a police station after the medical examination.

Earlier, sources, citing a document titled ‘Emergency Shifting’ available with Geo News, said that after Gill’s checkup the doctors of the Adiala jail and the authorities concerned were directed to shift the PTI leader to DHQ Hospital Rawalpindi.

Following the directions, Islamabad Police and Rawalpindi Police had reached the Adiala jail to shift Gill; however, he refused to go with the former. This led to hours-long drama between the two law enforcement agencies.

The Rawalpindi Police was adamant about shifting Gill to DHQ Hospital while Islamabad Police insisted on transferring the PTI leader to the federal capital as per court orders. Following the argument, additional personnel of Islamabad Police were called to the jail.

According to sources in jail, it was learnt that Gill had complained of difficulty in breathing and ill health due to alleged torture after which he was shifted to the jail hospital for a checkup.

Meanwhile, the sources had said that PTI Chairperson Imran Khan had ordered Gill to create an emergency-like situation so that he could be transferred to the hospital.

Jail officials said that prisoners of Adiala jail undergo checkups in DHQ Hospital as the medical team from Islamabad cannot check prisoners of Adiala jail.

Meanwhile, after reports of the worsening situation, the Ministry of Interior had also summoned Rangers and FC to execute the court orders.
