Pak vs Eng: Imam-ul-Haq to not play final Karachi Test

Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq will not be a part of the playing XI for the third Test against England which is scheduled to start tomorrow (December 17) in Karachi at the National Stadium.

The player has been ruled out of the third and final Test due to a hamstring injury.

During the third day of the second Test against the Englishmen in Multan, Imam was taken to a hospital for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan after he “felt unease in his right hamstring”.

In the absence of Imam, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan opened the second innings for Pakistan alongside Abdullah Shafique.

The opener, however, was back on the ground after returning from the hospital.

Naseem Shah ruled out

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s pacer Naseem Shah was also ruled out from the third and final Test, the cricket board (PCB) announced Tuesday.

In a statement, the board said that a niggle in the bowling shoulder has ruled out Shah from the side — who are already missing pacers Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The PCB said the fast bowler will travel to Lahore where he will undergo further assessments at the National High-Performance Centre before beginning rehabilitation.

“The team management has not requested his replacement at this stage,” the board noted.

Shaheen, Rauf not part of series

Shaheen — Pakistan’s main wicket-taker in all three formats — was left out of the series following a knee injury sustained during the T20 World Cup final in Australia earlier this month.

The pacer also had his appendix removed earlier this month due to which the 22-year-old was advised to stay out of the field.

Meanwhile, Rauf was ruled out of the rest of the Test series against England with a thigh injury. The 29-year-old stepped on the ball while fielding on the first day.

Scans and a subsequent assessment concluded Rauf needs time off for rehabilitation.

Magical Messi saves his best for last in Qatar

As if he had not made enough fairy-tales, Argentina’s little genius Lionel Messi has saved the potentially most magical script for his last World Cup — with one line left to write.

With immense pressure on him to match the late great Diego Maradona and send the trophy back to Buenos Aires, Messi has lit up the Qatar tournament while others in the superstar stratum — Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo — have underwhelmed and gone home.

From Argentina’s opening game until their semi-final win over Croatia, Messi, near the end of his career and at his fifth World Cup aged 35, has been the tournament’s out-and-out star.

His match statistics speak for themselves: six starts, five goals, three assists en route to Sunday’s final against France.

Smashing so many records it is hard to keep track, Messi has beaten Maradona’s tally of World Cup goals and appearances for Argentina, and on Sunday will jump ahead of Lothar Matthaeus’ joint record 25-match appearances at the tournament.

Beyond the dazzling data, however, it has been Messi’s mesmerising motion, and joyous celebrations, that have electrified football fans around the world.

Spending large passages of play at walking pace and barely bothering to defend at times, Messi has waited for his moments, employing with deadly effect his low centre-of-gravity, stunning change of pace and shimmying runs with ball glued to feet.

He is “a sprite floating on the periphery of the game until the moment is right,” wrote British sports writer Jonathan Wilson. “You can mark a man; much harder to mark a ghost.”

Personality

After a shock opening upset by Saudi Arabia, it was Messi who rallied the team: five wins followed.

His best goal was a sumptuous low strike from outside the box against Mexico.

And pundits are still shaking their heads over his pinpoint pass to Nahuel Molina for Argentina’s first goal against the Netherlands in the quarter-final. What made it remarkable, and a candidate for one of the all-time great assists, is that Messi did not look up yet found Molina with preposterous perfection.

It was in that game where Messi cemented his Qatari love affair with Argentine fans, who in the past have sometimes compared him harshly against Maradona’s extrovert personality, passion for his country, and 1986 World Cup triumph.

After scoring a penalty to send Argentine fans into delirium, the usually impeccably-behaved Messi ran towards the Dutch bench cupping his ears in a provocative gesture.

Then after the game, he confronted a Dutch striker with a jibe caught on camera: “What are you looking at, fool?”

Though some pundits criticised him for disrespect, Argentine fans were largely delighted at the Maradona-like flashes of defiance from the introverted Messi.

Some have had tattoos of the phrase.

“The game against Holland was when his ‘inner Maradona’ finally came out. They are one. They are eternal. They are Argentina!” said one ecstatic fan Jorge Castellanos, who was at the game with a flag depicting both men arm-in-arm.

Despite such adulation, everyone knows that true immortal parity with Maradona – at least in the biggest sporting tournament on earth – does still hinge on beating the French.

Many non-Argentines have long had Argentina as their second team, hoping Messi will win the World Cup if their own nation cannot to complete what would be a beautiful story.

‘Thanks, captain’

Messi left Argentina at 13 to join Barcelona’s youth setup.

Despite worries that he was too small, the new boy shone in the junior ranks before coach Frank Rijkaard gave him a senior debut at the age of 16 in a friendly against Porto in 2003.

Messi went on to become Barcelona’s all-time top scorer and appearance maker with 672 goals in 778 games.

In one season, 2011-12, he smashed La Liga’s scoring record with 50 goals. In total, he won 35 trophies with Barcelona, including 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies, before moving to Paris St Germain last year.

Along the way, he won the Ballon d’Or a record seven times and FIFA Player of the Year six.

For Argentina, he is the all-time top scorer and led his nation to Copa America glory last year after a 28-year trophy drought including a string of heartbreaking finals defeats.

All that is missing in the Messi story is a World Cup.

But even should the unthinkable happen and Argentina lose, it seems he has won over a nation that now knows Messi loved the shirt every bit as much as Maradona, brought them wondrous moments over the years, and simply could not have tried harder or come closer to lifting the World Cup.

Argentine journalist Sofia Martinez Mateos summed up the mood when she ended an interview with Messi this week not with a question but with a speech on behalf of the nation.

“The final is coming and of course we all want to win, but I want to tell you that whatever the result, there is something no-one can ever take from you,” she told a visibly moved Messi.

“You have entered the heart of every Argentine. Honestly, there’s not a kid without your shirt. You have marked all our lives … Carry it in your heart because that is more important than a World Cup and you’ve already won that, thanks Captain.”

Senator urges Pakistan to review policy towards Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs Farooq H Naek, while expressing reservation about the attack on the Pakistani embassy in Kabul, called Islamabad to review its policy towards Afghanistan.

The senator expressed his reservations during a briefing given by Foreign Secretary Asad Majeed on the attack on the Pakistan embassy in Kabul.

The secretary informed the Senate committee that Afghanistan had conveyed to Pakistan that they had arrested one sniper involved in the recent assassination attempt on the Pakistani envoy in Kabul and an investigation into the incident was underway.

Majeed said the Pakistani envoy was walking in the embassy yard when he came under attack. He explained that eight sniper shots and 100 rounds of bullets were fired from the eighth floor of a building that is close to 100 metres from the embassy.

“Thankfully, it was not a physical intrusion, and miraculously, the Pakistani ambassador remained safe,” he said, adding that the Afghan government had promised that the perpetrators of the crime would not be spared.

“The IS Khorasan has claimed responsibility for the incident,” he said, adding that Pakistan wanted peace in Afghanistan as peace and stability in Afghanistan were indispensable for Pakistan.

However, Senator Naek expressed reservations about the attack and said there was a dire need for Pakistan to revisit its policy towards Afghanistan.

“We are functioning as the spokesperson for Afghanistan, not India, in the world, but on the contrary, the Afghan government often opposes Pakistan and uses guns against us, which is unfortunate,” said the Pakistan Peoples Party senator.

FIA slammed for harassment of Pakistanis

Meanwhile, the additional director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) briefed the committee on the problems being faced by the Pakistani community living in Rwanda.

Senator Naek questioned the FIA official about the harassment of the Pakistani community living in Rwanda by officials at airports during visits to Pakistan.

“The Pakistani community, on their way back to Rwanda, is being harassed by FIA officials at airports, contrary to the fact that Pakistanis have a visa-on-arrival facility. Such an attitude of the FIA is regrettable,” he said.

He handed over written complaints received from the Pakistani High Commission in Rwanda to the FIA and Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials and asked for a detailed written reply to all the complaints in the next meeting.

The matter about the details of the number of Pakistani embassies, consulates, and missions presently working abroad and the grade-wise details of each staff, including ambassadors and consulars working therein with the break-up belonging to minorities with particular reference to Balochistan domicile, raised by Senator Danesh Kumar was disposed of.

He said that with right steps taken we can earn US$ 15 billion per year in the IT sector in two to three years’ time period.

The President expressed these views while addressing the launching ceremony of Web 3.0, at Punjab Information Technology Board, Lahore, today. He said that currently Russia Ukraine war had amply demonstrated the power of Cyber security and cyber defense to paralyze the public services delivery and communication and connectivity of the rival’s territory. He added that unfortunately in a report published on international ranking on August 22 Cyber security Pakistan was not mentioned at all.

He said that in terms of generating new and creative ideas, Pakistan was second to none but the need of the hour was information and data sources. He said the current level of human resource and technology was unable to handle the immense data being generated around the world. He said around 80 million trained human resource is required only in the cyber field if we are able to train our human resource in this sector alone, we can overcome the unemployment in the country and provide high paying jobs to our youth.  This can be achieved by rethinking and resetting our entire education system in a mode which is capable of providing high quality education and skills in shortest possible time period to our youth by the use of online and hybrid mode and by extending its reach to the masses in such a manner that no candidate is refused or denied his right to get education and skills, he added.

He said that we should setup a board by roping in diaspora to create a system to take up research and developing in quantum computing and forging alliances and linkages with the R&D institutions for its adopting on fast-track basis.

He said that IT and AI can bring revolution in our health sector by creating chat bots, online and web based help services, using conventional and social media to educate the masses regarding nature and wherewithal of communicable and non-communication diseases and promoting preventive mode of treatment to reduce the disease burden as Pakistan with its scarce resources is not in a position to provide curative treatment to its entire population.

The President called for improving cooperation and coordination among the Federation and its constituent units to patronize and promote start-up ecosystem, bringing women workforce and Differently Abled persons into productive economic stream

He said that almost 500 startups had already started functioning. He informed that Rs 137 billion had been collected in lieu of various taxes in Punjab through the digitalization of various services. He further informed that Punjab had planned to undertake Rs 450 billion worth of procurements annually through the e-procurement system in the future.

Earlier, the President distributed shields and certificates among companies and IT professionals who had performed exceptionally well in the field of Web 3.0 technology in Pakistan.

Gujarat’s butcher has become India’s PM, says FM Bilawal at UN presser

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari told India that Osama Bin Laden has died but the butcher of Gujarat — Narendra Modi — is still alive and has become the prime minister of India.

The Indian government does not believe in Gandhi’s ideology, but rather in the doctrines of his assassin, Bilawal told journalists at a press conference in New York on Thursday. The Indian government is influenced by Hitler, he said.

Condemning India’s role in stoking terrorism in Pakistan, the foreign minister said that terrorist elements in Pakistan are getting support from the neighbouring country. Foreign elements are actively trying to create instability in Balochistan, he said.

Bilawal stated that there was irrefutable evidence of Indian involvement in the Johar Town blast in Lahore. He demanded elements responsible for terrorism in Pakistan be brought to book.

Terrorism in Pakistan was sponsored from abroad, he noted. He underscored the need to stop terrorist groups from receiving training and financial support from across the border.

The foreign minister said that Pakistan is proud of its achievements in the war against terrorism, as the country has taken concrete steps in connection with the National Action Plan for counterterrorism.

He said that the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) endorsed Pakistan’s measures taken to stem terror financing. Bilawal also said that it is wrong to blame the Muslim world for terrorism as terrorism doesn’t belong to any religion or region.

He pointed out that terrorism has mainly targeted Muslims since 2001. Also, there were incidents where Chinese citizens were targeted in Karachi, he said.

Highlighting the post-flood situation in Pakistan, the foreign minister said some areas of Balochistan and Sindh are still waterlogged. The massive flooding adversely impacted sectors of health, education and basic infrastructure.

Assistance from the international community is crucial for Pakistan in coping with the challenge of rehabilitation and reconstruction of the victims, he asserted.

He called upon the international community to engage the Afghan interim government. Bilawal said primary education is permitted in Afghanistan but permission for secondary education is still awaited.

Replying to a question regarding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, he said that the former prime minister lost three of the ten seats of his party.

“If my party had lost three of its ten seats, I would have been very concerned,” he said.

Russia rains missiles on Ukraine, causes new power outages

Russia pounded Ukraine with missiles on Friday, hitting critical infrastructure across the country and knocking out power as people took cover in shelters, Ukrainian officials said.

Explosions were heard in the eastern city of Kharkiv and local officials said critical infrastructure had been hit. Local officials in the Black Sea region of Odesa said critical infrastructure had also been hit there.

Kharkiv, the central city of Poltava and parts of the capital Kyiv were left without electricity and the northern Sumy region suffered power outages, regional officials said.

Reuters witnesses heard explosions in Kyiv. It was not immediately clear if any were caused by missiles getting through air defences.

There was no immediate word of casualties and it was not clear what critical infrastructure had been hit.

“Do not ignore air raid alerts, remain in shelters,” Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of the president’s office said on the Telegram messaging app.

As many as 60 Russian missiles had been spotted heading for Ukraine, said Vitaly Kim, who is the governor of the Mykolaiv region in southern Ukraine.

Russia has carried out several waves of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure since October, causing power outages across the country.

The governor of the northern region of Sumy said there were power outages in his region because of Friday’s missile strikes.

 Air defence

Global economic powers pledged to beef up Kyiv’s military capabilities with a focus on air defence, as Russian missiles, artillery and drones hammered targets in Ukraine with no end in sight to Europe’s biggest conflict since World War Two.

The Group of Seven promised to “meet Ukraine’s urgent requirements” after President Volodymyr Zelenskiy appealed for modern tanks, artillery and long-range weapons to counter Russia’s devastating invasion.

Zelenskiy also urged G7 leaders gathered at a virtual meeting to support his idea of convening a special Global Peace Summit dedicated to bringing peace to his country.

The summit would be focused on the implementation of Kyiv’s 10-point peace plan that insists on, among other things, Russia’s withdrawal of all its troops from Ukraine and no territorial concessions on Kyiv’s part.

British Defence Minister Ben Wallace said on Monday he would be “open minded” about supplying Ukraine with longer-range missiles to target launch sites for Russian drones that have hit infrastructure if Russia carried on targeting civilian areas.

US President Joe Biden told Zelenskiy on Sunday that Washington’s priority was to boost Ukraine’s air defences. The United States also shipped the first batch of power equipment to Ukraine under an aid package agreed last month.

No plans to enter politics, says ex-DG ISI Faiz Hamid

ISLAMABAD: After being invited to join Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), former chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hamid has said that he will never join politics, reported The News.

Talking to the publication, the former director general of the ISI said that all speculations about him joining politics or becoming part of PTI were totally false.

“I will not join politics after two-year bar nor afterwards,” the former spymaster told the paper.

A day earlier, a video had gone viral where the former three-star officer of the Pakistan Army was invited by the local PTI leadership in Chakwal to join the Imran Khan-led party.

The video showed Hamid attending a gathering in his native village in Chakwal. In it, an unidentified person, addressing the gathering, praised the former spy chief for his services in the military and the development of the area.

The speaker urged the retired lieutenant general to join politics and play his role in the development of the country.

The speaker thanked him for his active involvement in development works worth millions of rupees in their area during his years in service.

Lt Gen (retd) Faiz had retired from service after General Asim Munir took command of the Pakistan Army as the chief of army staff.

The former DG ISI had requested early retirement after the prime minister had approved Gen Asim Munir and Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza’s elevation to the four-star rank.

His application for early retirement was approved on December 2 after the Defence Ministry forwarded his request to the premier.

Lt Gen (retd) Faiz was promoted to the three-star rank in April 2019 and was appointed as the adjutant general at the General Headquarters (GHQ). Before his elevation, he was serving as the head of the Counter Intelligence Wing of the ISI.

In June of the same year, Lt Gen (retd) Faiz was posted as the director general of ISIreplacing Gen Asim Munir, the incumbent chief of army staff.

In October 2021, Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum was appointed as the ISI chief while Hamid was transferred as the Peshawar corps commander.

But the appointment became a serious controversy when the then prime minister Imran Khan declined to relieve Hamid from the post. However, he later agreed to it.

In August of this year, Lt Gen (retd) Faiz was transferred and appointed Bahawalpur corps commander, a post he held till his retirement.

The former army officer was targeted by Imran Khan’s political opponents, particularly the PML-N, for his interference in political matters.

One of the reasons behind the PDM’s no-confidence motion against Imran Khan, political observers believe, was their fear that if Khan remains prime minister, then he would appoint Lt Gen (retd) Faiz as the army chief and would then fix the opposition to prolong his rule by manipulating the 2023 general elections.

China works vigorously to advance green transportation

By Wang Haonan, Li Junjie, Wang Mingfeng, People’s Daily

By 2030, no less than 70 percent of travel will be conducted through environmentally friendly means in cities with permanent populations of one million or more, said an action plan for carbon dioxide peaking issued by China’s State Council.

Over the recent years, cities across the country have made intensive efforts to advance green transportation, adopting various measures to improve the green mobility experience of citizens and contribute to low-carbon development.

For instance, they have paved bicycle-only lanes, widely put new energy buses into use and built tightly woven rail transit networks.

Beijing’s first bicycle-only lane opened to traffic on May 31, 2019. It extends 6.5 kilometers from Huilongguan, a densely populated community in the northern part of the city, to Houchangcun Road, where a large number of high-tech companies are located. It has become a prioritized choice of commuting by bicycle for many citizens.

A man surnamed Zhang works for an internet company in Beijing. Cycling is his hobby.

“It took me at least an hour to drive to my office if I was caught up in traffic jams, but now I can ride to my office in around 30 minutes,” he told People’s Daily, wearing a helmet, a pair of cycling gloves and a cycling suit, which made him look like a very professional rider.

According to Liu Shuang, head of the bicycle-only lane managing center of Beijing’s Changping district, around 11,600 people ride on the lane every day. As of the end of November this year, a total of 6.49 million trips had been made on the lane, with an average ridership of 4,000 to 9,000 per day.

“Bike riding saves 32 percent and 50 percent of the commuting time respectively compared with driving and taking buses, and it cuts carbon emission by over 1,500 tons per year,” Liu said.

Currently, the bike-only lane in Beijing is undergoing expansion projects, Liu said. Upon completion, it will form a “slow transport” network with a broader coverage linking Changping, Haidian and Xicheng districts, and offer citizens with more choices of low-carbon and efficient transportation.

To put into practice the philosophy of green transportation, Hefei, capital of east China’s Anhui province has vigorously promoted new energy buses over the recent years.

An official with the passenger transport management office of the city’s municipal transport department told People’s Daily that all new and updated buses joining the city’s bus fleet since 2018 are pure electric.

As of the end of 2020, all operating buses running in downtown Hefei were powered by new energy, the official added.

Statistics showed that currently there are 3,440 new energy buses in operation in Hefei, or 98 percent of the city’s bus fleet.

Yang Haibing, general manager of the technical management department of Hefei Public Transport Group Co., Ltd., said that buses in the city reduced 155,700 tons of carbon dioxide emission in 2021, which was equivalent to planting 8.5 million trees based on the criteria that a tree absorbs 18.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide a year.

Apart from optimizing the energy structure of the bus fleet, Hefei also worked to upgrade its bus network with digital means.

In an intelligent bus dispatching center of the city, there is a huge screen that displays real-time information about all the bus stations, passenger volume and operating vehicles in the city.

“By analyzing the data, we are able to manage our capacity in a targeted manner, which brings the maximum convenience to citizens and contributes to the reduction of carbon emission,” said Bu Zexiang, head of the operation management department of the company.

Urban rail transit is favored by citizens, too. Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan province, has opened 13 rail transit routes with 558 kilometers of operation in total. According to statistics, the city’s urban rail transit network reported a total of 9 billion passenger trips as of August this year, and over 60 percent of residents opted for public transport.

Besides, Chengdu’s metro system has also worked to better integrate rail transit with bus services. It launched five tourism metro routes and connected over 20 bus routes to the metro network. In addition, it also improved the connection between metro stations and their surrounding transport facilities and commercial areas, to practically optimize the mobility experience of citizens.

‘This is the right time’: Emotional Azhar Ali bids adieu to Test cricket

Batter Azhar Ali has announced that Pakistan and England‘s Test match in Karachi will be his last for the country.

“Everything has its time. This is the right time, tomorrow will be my career’s last Test,” said Azhar in a press conference, adding that it was an honour for him to represent Pakistan.

The former captain said that there were many people who he was grateful to in the “strenuous, yet beautiful journey”.

“I want to make a special mention of my family without whose sacrifices; I would not have been where I am today. My parents, wife, siblings, and children have been my strength throughout,” said Azhar.

The batsman said that he was blessed to share dressing room with some of the most outstanding cricketers with whom he shared a “strong bond”.

“I feel much richer by calling these people my friends. I am also blessed to have played under some wonderful coaches to whom I will always remain grateful,” said the batsman.

The skipper said that he is retiring from “international cricket as a fulfilled cricketer who ticked most of the goals” he had set for himself.

“Not many cricketers go on to lead their countries, and that I was able to captain Pakistan is a matter of great pride for me. From being a kid who started as a leg-spinner to becoming a mainstay in the Test batting line-up, I had the loveliest moments of my life that I will cherish forever,” said Azhar.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja termed Azhar “one of the most committed and loyal servants of Pakistan cricket”.

“While it is sad that Pakistan will not have a player of his experience in the dressing room to draw upon, it only reflects the circle of life. I hope to see Azhar continuing to play a role in the development of Pakistan cricket and sharing his vast knowledge and experience with budding cricketers,” said Raja.

The 37-year-old made his debut in 2010 in England against Australia at Lord’s and scored his maiden Test half-century in only his second match.

He would score 34 more half-centuries and went past the 100-run mark on 19 instances.

Azhar, one of the most successful batters for the country, scored 7,097 runs in 96 matches at an average of 42.49.

He is Pakistan’s fifth leading Test run-getter behind Younis Khan, Javed Miandad, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf.

Among his accolades, Azhar is the only Pakistan batter to score a triple-century in a pink-ball Test. He had achieved the feat against the West Indies at Dubai in 2016. That unbeaten 302 remains his highest score in Test cricket.

Azhar captained Pakistan in nine Tests in two separate tenures from 2016 till 2020.

The batter had also ready retired from One-Day Internationals in 2018 – a year after helping Pakistan win the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

Bilawal Bhutto denies reports of Pakistan getting discounted energy from Russia

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari denied reports that Pakistan is “pursuing or receiving” any discounted energy from Russia, saying that the country does have energy insecurity and it is exploring various avenues to expand areas to get energy.

The foreign minister’s statement is in contrast to his cabinet colleague, who, after visiting Moscow earlier this month, had claimed that Pakistan is seeking oil at discounted rates from the energy-rich country.

On December 5, Minister of State (Petroleum Division) Musadik Malik said Russia had agreed to provide crude oil as well as petrol and diesel to Pakistan at discounted rates.

Speaking during an interview with PBS NewsHour on Wednesday, Bilawal said: “We are facing an extremely difficult economic situation, inflation, pump prices. We do have energy insecurity and we are exploring various avenues to expand the areas where we can get energy from. Any energy we receive from Russia will take a long time for us to develop.”

When asked if Pakistan can have a relationship with the United States as well as have strengthening ties with China and do business deals with Russia, the foreign minister said that as far as Pakistan’s relationship with China is concerned, China is its neighbour with a long history between the two countries.

Pakistan has a lot of cooperation with China, particularly on the economic front, he said, adding that Pakistan has a historical relationship with the US that stretches back to the 1950s.

“We have partnered over the course of history and I believe whenever the United States and Pakistan have worked together, we have achieved great things. And whenever there’s been a distance developed between us then we’ve faltered.”

“I believe we are now heading in a positive direction with increased engagement on both sides. I think it’s more important, in a world that offers a multitude of challenges, for us to find areas in which we do on to work together. We are doing that on climate, health, we’re finding business and economic opportunities, particularly for women.”

Bilawal said that Pakistan and the US are cooperating in a whole host of areas, calling it a healthy sign. He said that the cooperation between the two countries was narrow and specific within the context of the war on terror in the past, however, Pakistan and the US are now building a more broad-based partnership.

False impression of PTI popularity

When asked if former prime minister Imran Khan would win if the government decides to hold early elections, Bilawal said that he wouldn’t win.

The PPP chief said that removing Khan through a no-confidence motion was a cornerstone of democratic development.

“Every other prime minister before Khan was either removed through a military coup or the orders of the Supreme Court. This is the first time through a democratic constitutional procedure a prime minister was removed from Parliament.”

He said as far as the by-elections are concerned, Khan resigned from seats that he held himself. He said he believes that there’s a false perception that’s been created about Khan’s popularity and falsely portraying winning by-elections in his own seats as some sort of testament to his popularity across Pakistan.

Bilawal said that the government will not call for snap polls, saying that it is not a justifiable reason for Pakistan to break the precedent of completing its five-year term just because Khan hasn’t been in power for the last six months.

Afghanistan

Speaking about equal freedom for women and for girls to go back to school in Afghanistan, Bilawal said he has been insisting the world to engage with the Taliban leadership. “We insist that not only Pakistan but the international community must engage with Afghanistan.”

“As far as women’s rights and women’s education is concerned, we believe that women have the right to education and a right to equal space in society at all levels.”

He added that the Taliban have been in power for over a year and one year is not a very long time for them to be able to deliver in Afghanistan. “It is a long time, however, for girls to go without an education. We continue to raise it with them. We encourage the fact that primary education for girls is allowed in Afghanistan, tertiary education for girls is allowed in Afghanistan and we look forward to the day when secondary education will also be allowed.”

When asked if politics should be a family affair, Bilawal said that he agrees that it shouldn’t be a family affair. “In the last 55 years of my party’s existence, we have gone through three generations of leadership. It should still be the first generation of my family doing politics, let alone the second being lost and me having to step up and fill the role that I am fulfilling today.”

He added that his party pursues democracy and has done in the past.
